Wilbur O. Horton Sr.
Mr. Wilbur O. Horton Sr., 89, of Dahlonega, formerly of Marietta, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003.
A native of Murhpy, N.C., Mr. Horton was a cattle and chicken rancher in Cobb County and later in Lumpkin County.
He enjoyed country music, camping and fishing.
Mr. Horton is survived by his wife, Lucile Rucker Horton; daughter, Jane Horton Bannister, Marietta; sons, Donald Horton, Dahlonega, Larry Horton, Acworth; brother, Glen Horton, Conyers; sister, Ruby McCullough, Marietta; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Jan. 28 at Canton Hill.

Jeanette Bruce Anderson
Mrs. Jeanette Bruce Anderson, 83, of Clermont, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at New Horizons North Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Lumpkin County and had lived in Hall County for a number of years. She was retired from Hall County Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joe and Rose Dover Bruce; son, Hoyt Wesley Patterson; brother, Claude Elbert Bruce; and husbands, Charlie Patterson and Clerence Anderson.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Johnny Ramey, Clermont; son, Kenneth Anderson, Flowery Branch; daughter-in-law, Minnie Patterson, Anderson, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 22 in the chapel of Ward’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Tritt officiating. Burial followed in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

Exer Eulene Gazaway
Mrs. Exer Eulene Gazaway, 74, of Forsyth County, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, following an extended illness.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Maggie Bennett, and sister, Ethel Bennett.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Marcus M. Gazaway, Gainesville; children, Marshall and Gloria Gazaway, Gainesville, Becky and Theron Lamb, Cumming, Wanda Echols and David Dyer, Murrayville; grandchildren, Meredith Gazaway Bays, Melanie Ellis, Daniel Gazaway, Robin Jarrard, Michele Charles, Samantha Foster, Amber Watson; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Emmajean and Davis Roper, Pierce and Betty Bennett, Marrell and Robert Smith, Linda and James T. Gittens, all of Gainesville, Sara Wilson, Opal and George Pugh, Loyte and Gay Bennett, Dawsonville, Royce and Hilda Bennett, Dahlonega; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held Jan. 25 at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Richards, the Rev. Shane Milford and the Rev. Harold Evans officiating. Burial followed in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.

George W. Hamilton
Mr. George W. Hamilton, 56, of Hall County, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, after a courageous battle with heart disease.
He was born Feb. 1, 1947, in Bay Shore New York, and graduated from Sayville High School in 1966. He proudly served his country in Vietnam and Germany.
He enjoyed restoring old cars, driving, motorcycling, and his dog, Eddie.
He is survived by his son, Scott, and wife, Amy, of Gainesville; brother, John Hamilton, Long Island, New York; and nieces, Jamie and Kimberly, Long Island, New York. Many good friends in the motorcycling community will miss him.
Friends and family gathered at Mr. Hamilton’s home Jan. 26 for an open house in his honor. A private memorial service will be held later.
Cremation Society of the South was in charge of the arrangements.
Clinton Stephens
Mr. Clinton Stephens, 84, of Gainesville, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his son, David Stephens, six brothers, and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Euphemia Stephens, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Wayne Gibson, Dahlonega; daughter-in-law, Martha Stephens Chastain, Gainesville; brother, Dean Stephens, Gainesville; sisters, Myrtie Barnett, Ernestine Stephens, both of Gainesville; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Michelle and Kelvin Davidson, Gainesville, Gloria and Marvin Lingerfelt, Dahlonega; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Kevin and Terrie Stephens, Gainesville; grandson, Tyler Stephens, Gainesville; great-grandsons, Josh Davidson, Kale Davidson, David Stephens, Mason Stephens, all of Gainesville, Trevor Lingerfelt, Seth Lingerfelt, both of Dahlonega; great-granddaughters, Chastity Cantrell, Breana Lingerfelt, both of Dahlonega; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Jan. 27 at Little-Davenport Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Elrod and the Rev. Dwayne Ryals officiating. Burial followed in Coll Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Celia Davis
Mrs. Mary Celia Davis, 98, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Gold City Community Living Center in Dahlonega following an extended illness.
A native of Newton County, she was a homemaker and member of the Mansfield United Methodist Church in Mansfield. She retired from Bibb Manufacturing Company in Covington.
She was the daughter of the late C.E. and Bertie Jay Piper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Davis; sons, Roy M. Davis, Dr. Thomas C. Davis; brother, N.J. Piper; and sisters, Ila Randall, Mojean Randall, Chloe Liggett.
She is survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Jan. 28 at Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington with the Rev. Gene Davis officiating.

Joe Clyde Casteel
Mr. Joe Clyde Casteel, 63, of Gainesville, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.
A native of Shelbyville, Tenn., he had lived in Gainesville since September 2000.
He was a former resident of Gwinnett County and was of the Pentecostal faith.
He worked with the Columbus Police Department for several years and also was a grocery store manager in Opelika, Ala.
He was a production supervisor in the heating and air conditioning industry.
He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was the son of the late Rev. James V. and Eula Catherine Skinner Casteel.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Junior Casteel.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Casteel, Gainesville; daughters, Kim Cantrell, Smith’s Station, Ala., Allison Sheridan, Opelika, Ala.; sons, Joey Casteel, Jimmy Casteel, Jeff Casteel, all of Smith’s Station, Ala., Ricky Sheridan, Pompano Beach, Fla.; sisters, Pat Casteel, Weatherford, Texas, Edna Tadlock, Eloise Reynolds, both of Dahlonega; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 28 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Graveside services were held Jan. 28 at Fort Mitchell National cemetery in Alabama.

Leon Joseph Mattern
Mr. Leon Joseph Mattern, 66, of Dahlonega, and formerly of Powder Springs, died Saturday, May 24, 2003.
A native of Montour, Penn., Mr. Mattern had been a resident of the Cobb County area and the Dahlonega area.
Mr. Mattern was an office manager with the Prime Source company, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, member of American Legion Post 294 and was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. Mattern is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Mattern, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, Bob And Rena Mattern, Powder Springs; son, Joe Mattern, Comer; daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Carlton Allen, Dahlonega, and Trina and Richard Hart, Hiram; sisters, Nancy Cohick, Jersey Shores, Pa., Romaine Taylor, Hillsbough, Fla., Shirley Heighes, Brevard, N.C., and Mary Bastian, Surf City, N.C.; brothers, Jerry Allen, Camphill, Pa., and Sam Mattern, Northumberland, Pa.; 9 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services are to be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of West Cobb Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerry Davis officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Yonah View Memorial Park in Cleveland.

Grace Cantrell
Mrs. Grace Cantrell, 85, of Dahlonega, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Gold City Health Care Center in Dahlonega following an extended illness.
Mrs. Cantrell was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, was a homemaker, and attended the Living Waters Outreach Church in Murrayville.
She was the daughter of the late Homer and Mary Sullens Allison and was also preceded in death by her husband, George Cantrell Jr.; daughter, Cornelia Cantrell; infant daughter, Judy Cantrell; sons, Melvin Cantrell, G.H. Cantrell, Carlos Cantrell; sister, Mary Ollie Cantrell; brother, James Allison; granddaughter, Lisa Swing; and grandson, Stanley Bruce.
She is survived by her sons, Frank Frederick Cantrell, Marvin L. Cantrell, Ronnie Gene Cantrell, all of Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Cosetta Davis, Dahlonega, Ga., Murdean and Johnny Hunsinger, Hildria and Arnold Gentry, Davada and Neal Rucker, all of Dahlonega, Lenora and Henry Woody, Clermont, Edith and Ralph Bruce, Dawsonville, Gladys and Eddie Hazlegreen, Lula; sister, Fannie Anderson, Dawsonville; brothers and sisters-in-law, J.W. and Virginia Allison, Eugene and Bernice Allison, all of Greenville, S.C.; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a large number of other relatives.
Services were held May 25 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Joey Fortner officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Hope cemetery in Dahlonega.
