Jason Dennis James Hudgins

Infant

Jason Dennis James Hudgins, infant son of Jason and Brandy Hudgins, of Cleveland, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

He is survived by his parents, Jason and Brandy Hudgins, Cleveland; sister, Summer Hudgins, Cleveland; grandparents, Brenda Corbin, Mark Grizzle, Cleveland, Becky Krenz, Dahlonega, Mark and Marsha Reeves, Winder; great-grandparents, Ruby Carver, Gillsville, Dottie and Randy Cronic, Gainesville; and everal other relatives.

Services were held March 9 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Lanier Martin officiating. Burial followed in the Welcome Worship Center cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Banister Funeral Home, Dahlonega, was in charge of the arrangements.

LeRoy Ross

Lumpkin resident

Mr. LeRoy Ross, 90, of Dahlonega, died Monday, March 8, 2004, at Gold City Community Living Center in Dahlonega following a brief illness.

Born Feb. 26, 1914, in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Fannie Prather Ross.

Mr. Ross had lived in Lumpkin County for the past 71 years, was the manager of Gold City Caf' and Pool Room, loved the outdoors and fishing and was of the Baptist faith.

He was also preceded in death by his wife in 1990, Adelaide Ross, and a son, Robert Ross, in 1998.

He is survived by his daughters, Hazel Tyson, Gainesville, Mary Hall, Fannie Weidner, Brenda Young, all of Dahlonega, Ruth Piper, Marietta; sons, Frank Ross, Howard Ross, both of Dahlonega, Tommy Ross, Dawsonville; brother, Weldon Ross, Athens; sisters, Rachel Ragland, Hazel Ross, both of Athens; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 11 at Dahlonega Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert D. Green, the Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Junior Evans officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

McKinney Funeral Home, Dahlonega, was in charge of the arrangements.

Capt. Robert Paul Littlefield Jr.

Capt. Robert Paul Littlefield Jr., 82, of Dahlonega, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega.

Capt. Littlefield piloted B-26 Marauders with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying bombing missions on Nazi installations in the Mediterranean theater.

On one occasion over the Liri River dam in Italy, his plane was hit 45 times by flak, and the rudder controls were shot away. On another, occasion, his plane was hit 50 times, and a rudder control cable was severed, sending his plane into a spin while a box of ammunition caught fire inside the plane. Both times, he brought his plane and crew safely to home base. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Born June 13, 1921, in Atlanta, Capt. Littlefield graduated from Fulton High School and attended North Georgia College and Georgia Tech before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor motivated him to join the war effort.

Capt. Littlefield served in the Army Reserves, and trained troops stateside during the Korean War.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paul Littlefield Sr., and his sister, Martha Elizabeth Littlefield.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann Seritt Littlefield, Dahlonega; daughters and son-in-law, Stacey Elizabeth Littlefield, Robin Kathleen Littlefield, both of Dahlonega, Leanne Yvette Stennett, Calhoun, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward McHugh, Acworth.

At his request, Capt. Littlefield was cremated, and his ashes were scattered on his property in Porter Springs.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Lumpkin County (TLC) Humane Society.

Derrick Alton Whitlow

Lumpkin resident

Mr. Derrick Alton Whitlow, 23, of Dahlonega, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Atlanta Medical Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Whitlow was born in Hall County. He was a roofer and a member of Community Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents, Harold and Louise Whitlow, Dahlonega; biological mother, Teresa Jones, Dahlonega; girlfriend, Amanda Dillenger, Dahlonega; sisters, Diane Jackson, Dahlonega, Sandra Godfrey, Clarkesville; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Donna Whitlow, Dahlonega; and half-brothers, Christopher Todd Thomas, Cleveland, Rolando Londo Robledo, Louisiana.

Services were held March 10 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Dyer, the Rev. Sam Ragan and the Rev. Bill McDougal officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, was in charge of the arrangements.

William Thomas "Bill" Lipscomb

Col. William Thomas "Bill" Lipscomb, U.S. Army retired, 84, of Franklin, Tenn., and formerly of Dahlonega, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Beacon Point Retirement Home in Franklin, Tenn., following a sudden illness.

Born June 21, 1919, in Cumming, and raised in Dahlonega, he was the son of the late Dewey H. and Edna Frances Henderson Lipscomb and was also preceded in death by a brother, George H. Lipscomb.

His father was the owner of Lipscomb Drug Co. in Dahlonega for 45 years.

Col. Lipscomb served in the Army for 30 years and was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1971 and moved back to Dahlonega in 1977.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucille Court "Lou" Lipscomb, Franklin, Tenn.; daughter, Penny Nelms, Franklin, Tenn.; granddaughter and husband, Courtney and Robert Ashburn, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandson, Tommy Nelms, Franklin, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jean and Jim Salter, Gainesville; and nieces, Laura McKinley, Jesup, Melinda Lipscomb, Nancy Lipscomb, Lisa Lipscomb, all of Powder Springs.

Services were held March 9 at Dahlonega Baptist Church with the Rev. William D. Hutcheson and the Rev. Robert D. Green officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope cemetery in Dahlonega will full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dahlonega Baptist Church Building Fund, 234 Hawkins Street, Dahlonega, GA 30533.

Joe Dan Davis

Mr. Joe Dan Davis, 77, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following an extended illness.

Mr. Davis was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and member of Siloam Baptist Church in Lumpkin County. He was retired from Coronet Mills in Gainesville.

He was the son of the late Luna Lorenzo and Myrtle Mincey Davis and was also preceded in death by a sister, Fannie Morgan; and brothers, Bud Davis, Carl Davis, Arch Davis, Frank Davis, Claude Davis, John Davis, and Jay Davis.

He is survived by his daughter, Sue Davis, Dahlonega; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Dan and Gail Davis, Ricky and Beverly Davis, Steve and Angela Davis, all of Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Bazel Mayo, Dahlonega; grandchildren, Johnathan Davis, Jay Davis, Daniel Davis, Hannah Davis; former wife and good friend, : Willie Mae Davis, Dahlonega; and numerous other relatives.

Services were held March 9 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Johnny Garrett officiating. Burial followed in the Davis cemetery in Lumpkin County.

James Willis Hester

Lumpkin native

Mr. James Willis Hester, 86, of Dahlonega, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Decatur following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1918, in Lumpkin County, where he was a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late James Wesley and Sarah Ravan Hester.

He was also preceded in death by his companion, Etta Mae Lewis; sisters, Amanda Hester Gerrells and Maude Hester; and a brother, Gomer Hester.

Mr. Hester served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired farmer, and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Zora Robinson, Mrs. Mattie Eaton, both of Dahlonega; brother, Mr. Billy Hester of Dahlonega; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 11 at McKinney Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Allison officiating. Burial followed in Dahlonega Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance Honor Guard.

Derrick Alton Whitlow

Mr. Derrick Alton Whitlow, 23, of Dahlonega, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Atlanta Medical Hospital in Atlanta.
