Marie Alston David
Mrs. Marie Alston David, 71, of Dawsonville, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Macon, Miss., she had lived in Dawson County for many years. Mrs. David was an avid gardener, loved animals and was gifted in the arts.
She loved and was dedicated to her community. She was a charter member of the Dawson County Woman's Club, a former chairman of the Dawson County Republican Party, a former chairman of the Dawson County Board of Health, a member of the Dawson County Art Council, a member of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce and a lifelong member of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. David formerly owned and operated Marie's Dress Shop, the Vandiviere House Tea Room, Marie's Catering and was a partner in Betty's Country Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion Edward and Alva Johnson; sisters Edith Morgan and Sara Fairley; brother, Buddy Alston; and granddaughter, Erica Danielle Helton.
Mrs. David was a devoted wife to her husband and loving mother to her children.
She is survived by her husband, George David, Dawsonville; children, Jennifer David, Claire and Garry Sharp, all of Dawsonville, Dana and Ben Lachance, Melanie and Marlin Nelson, Dorian David, all of Dahlonega, David and Jean Carpenter, Duluth; brothers and sister-in-law, Hillman and Lynn Alston, Los Angeles, Calif., Charles and Marilyn Alston, Fairfax, Va.; sisters-in-law, Nancy F. Noblin, Atlanta, Deborah Becotte, Anniston, Ala.; brother-in-law, Douglas E. David, Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Chapin and Naomi LaChance, Keith Pounds, Helen and George Cartledge, Taylor and Mayson Hulsey, John Brian MacBeth; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 28 at First Baptist Church of Dawsonville with Dr. Jim Gaines, the Rev. Nancy F. Noblin and the Rev. Hugh Fields officiating. Burial followed in Dawsonville City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dawson County Humane Society or Tallulah Falls School.

Fred T. Burns
Mr. Fred T. Burns, 85, of Dahlonega, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following a brief illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a retired farmer and manager of Lumpkin County Farmers Association. Recently he was employed as a bookkeeper at Boyd Cantrell Saw Mill. He was a member of Dahlonega United Methodist Church.
He was the son of the late Henry Thomas Burns and Belle Johnson Burns. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Yvonne Lunsford Burns, and a sister, Mamie Phillips.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Doris Burns, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David Hill, Auburn, Ala., Becky and Jim Burnett, Dahlonega; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one special niece; and several other relatives.
Services were held Dec. 12 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clifford Allen officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Hope cemetery in Dahlonega with full military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance Honor Guard.

Robert W. Hughes
Mr. Robert W. Hughes, 87, of Dahlonega, died Thursday at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a native of Dawson County and had lived in Lumpkin County for most of his life. He worked at the Lumpkin County landfill for a number of years and also had worked in the poultry and dairy industries.
He was a member and deacon at Salem Baptist Church in Lumpkin County and served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II.
He was the son of the late Charles Henry and Lula Boone Hughes and also was preceded in death by his sister, Alene Garmon, and brothers, Edward Hughes and Albert Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Vernis Smith Hughes, Dahlonega; daughters, Barbara Hughes, Jackson, Carolyn Fields, Charlotte Hughes, both of Dahlonega; sisters, Mildred Henry, Azalee Ladd, both of Gainesville; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 8 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Fortner officiating. Burial followed in Dahlonega Memorial Park.

Nicholas A. Pender Jr.
Nick Pender, 62, of Dahlonega, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at home following an extended illness.
A 21-year resident of Dahlonega, Mr. Pender grew up in Greenwood, Fla. and lived in Tampa, Fla. for 20 years where he was a CPA and a founding partner of Pender, Newkirk and Company. A longtime bluegrass musician, Mr. Pender performed with his wife, Glenda, and with the Gold Rush Bluegrass Band, and before that, with the Shoal Creek Band.
An avid supporter of Appalachian culture and ardent community activist, Mr. Pender won many awards including the Magnificent Seven Award given by The Dahlonega Nugget, the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce's Golden Pick Award, the Dr. Gene Wiggins Award for his work to preserve traditioinal music, as well as recognition by the Lumpkin County Historical Society for his contributions to the history and heritage of Lumpkin County.
He developed, along with his wife, Glenda, the music program for the Bear on the Square Mountain Festival and served until his death as co-president of the organization. He was a founding member of the Folkways Center of the Georgia Mountains, the Wiggins Fund for the Preservation of Appalachian Music, and the Holly Theatre.
Mr. Pender donated land for the first house built by Habitat for Humanity in Lumpkin County, served on the Lumpkin County Water and Sewer Authority, and spearheaded the successful effort to establish a city ordinance regulating smoking in public places in Dahlonega. He was also a member of numerous environmental and music organizations and donated his time to perform traditional mountain music in area schools and libraries.
Mr. Pender is survived by his wife, Glenda Neel Pender; son, Scott Pender and his partner Steve Szot of Washington, D.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Graham McGhee; son, Neel Pender; grandchildren Nick and Cory Pender of Tallahassee, Fla. and Annie and Will McGhee of Dahlonega; plus nephews, nieces and other beloved family members and friends. He was the son of Hilda Rish and Nicholas A. Pender, Sr.
A memorial celebration of the life of Nick Pender will be held Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. at Dahlonega United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim Shumard and Sam Buice officiating, followed by a communal meal and jam session.
Local folks planning to attend the communal meal are asked to bring a casserole or finger food to the church kitchen.

Sally A. Hull
Mrs. Sally A. Hull, 74, of Wilmington, N.C., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Gold City Community Living Center in Dahlonega following an extended illness.
Born May 10, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Eleanor Yensch Amram and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Hull.
Mrs. Hull had lived in Wilmington since 1974 and had worked as a receptionist with radio station WHQR in Wilmington. She was of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Hull, Dahlonega; sons, Brad Hull, Alpharetta, Jeff Hull, Roswell; grandchildren, David Hull, Sarah Melissa Hull; brother, Jack Amram, Chicago, Ill.; and sister, Nancy Phillips, Millersburg, Ohio.
At her request, Mrs. Hull was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lenora Gooch Hicks
Mrs. Lenora Gooch Hicks, 89 of Murrayville, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Chatuge Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Born in White County, Georgia on Oct. 9, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Matt and Nettie Palmer Gooch.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Hicks, and a son, Shorty Hicks.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws, William and Mabell Hicks, Lithonia, the Rev. Tim and Joyce Hicks, Murrayville; grandchildren, Cathy and Bobby Moon, Martha and Robert Todd, Kim and Andy Caldwell, Stacie and Steven Reece, Tammy and Jason Watkins; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 23 a Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Robinson and the Rev. Franklin Grant officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 2 Cemetery.

Mary Etta Sullens
Mrs. Mary Etta Sullens, 83, of Dahlonega, died Tuesda, y May 25, 2004, at New Horizons North Nursing Home in Gainesville.
Mrs. Sullens was born in Lumpkin County on May 7, 1921. She was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith. She was the daughter of the late Goodman and Flossie Hayes Sullens and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Leon Sullens; sisters, Bertie Barrett, Cassie Payne, Bessie Brown, and brothers, Roy Lee Sullens, Robert Sullens, James E. "Babe" Sullens, and Charlie Sullens.
She is survived by Daughters and sons-in-law, Ruthie and Robert Robertson, Dahlonega, Cora and Ransom Ash, Dahlonega, Elizabeth and Leon Arrowood, Dahlonega, Arlene and Harold Ivey, Lula; sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence and Inez Sullens, Dahlonega, Ernest and Buffy Sullens, Cleveland, Curtis and Ann Sullens, Dahlonega; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a large number of other relatives.
Services were held May 27 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Kenneth Pilcher officiating.
Burial followed in the Community Chapel Church cemetery in the Frogtown community in Lumpkin County.

Pearl Pruitt
Mrs. Pearl Pruitt, 99, of Dahlonega, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following an extended illness.
Mrs. Pruitt was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, was a homemaker and was the oldest living member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.
She was the daughter of the late Sherman and Vernisha Moose Anderson and was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Pruitt; sisters, Fannie Beasley, Carrie Lance, Nora Beasley; and brothers, Will Anderson, Luther Anderson, and Arthur Anderson.
She is survived by her daughters, Wardye Wimpy and Louise Grindle, both of Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Hazel Pruitt, Dahlonega; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Services were held May 21 a Cavender Creek Baptist Church in Lumpkin County with the Rev. Steven Adams and the Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
