Phillip 'Big Pop' Chitwood
Funeral services for Phillip 'Pop' 'Big Pop' Chitwood, 78, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Cool Springs United Methodist Church. Darren Wilkes, the Rev. Bill Trotter, the Rev. Garvis Kinsey and the Rev. Steve McIntyre officiated with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Chitwood died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on Jan. 19, 1925, he was the son of the late Isaac Noah and Bessie Josephine Sosebee Chitwood. He was the grandson of James Monroe Chitwood and Hannah Morris. He married
Fannie Ossie Mae Coker on April 12, 1942. In his early years, he was a farmer and later worked at a sawmill in the morning and went to work in the evening at Habersham Mills for 26 and a half years. He was a member of Cool Springs United Methodist Church all his life. He and his wife always carried their family to church, never sent them. What a blessing.
Mr. Chitwood was preceded in death by his wife, Ossie Mae Chitwood; and brothers, Cohen Brannon Chitwood, Joe Marlow Chitwood, Oscar 'Bee' Benjamin Chitwood, and Isaac Franklin 'Frank' Chitwood.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Beatrice and Bobby York, Carolyn and Charles Wilkes, Phyllis and Barry Trotter, of Clarkesville, and Lesia and Merle Long of Helen; sons and daughters-in-law, Brannon and Brenda Chitwood, Clint and Debra Chitwood, Kelvin and Lorraine Chitwood, all of Clarkesville, and Ben and Judy Chitwood of Dahlonega; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Lillian Irene Surrena
Funeral services for Lillian Irene Surrena, 79, of Clarkesville were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. Bart McMillan officiated. Additional services and burial will be held in Harrisville, Pa.
Born in Grafton, W.Va., on March 8, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Lauren Poling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Surrena, brothers and sisters. She was a registered nurse, retiring after 30 years of service, and was a member of Harrisville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club.
Survivors include her daughters, Sherri McGuire of Silver Springs, Md., Deborah Burgard of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Mari Mincey of Clarkesville; son, Michael Surrena of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Everette James Pugh
Funeral services for Everette James Pugh, 91, of Cornelia were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Steve Doran officiated with burial in Level Grove cemetery with military honors provided by Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Post 15 and the Grant Reeves Veterans of Foreign War Post 7720.
Mr. Pugh died Friday, April 4, 2003, at a private nursing home following an extended illness.
Born in Walker County, Ala., on March 14, 1912, he was the son of the late William C. and Synthia Everley Wingo Pugh. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Windham Pugh; son-in-law, Larry Stamps; granddaughter, Vernell Stamps; and sister, Ruby Avery.
Mr. Pugh was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a life member of Grant Reeves VFW Post 7720. He was retired from Atlanta Marble Company and was a member of the Habersham Senior Citizens Center and was of the nondenominational faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Jo Stamps of Cornelia; stepdaughter, Ann Bates of Columbia, Ala.; son, James William Pugh of Decatur; several stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren and several stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

William Junior Freeman
Funeral services for William Junior Freeman, 73, of Demorest were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Austin Kelley and the Rev. Lester Haynes officiated with burial in Habersham Cemetery, Demorest.
Mr. Freeman died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Stephens County Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on Nov. 20, 1929, he was the son of the late William H. Sr. and Lessie McAllister Freeman. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Fieldale Farms.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara York Freeman of Demorest; daughter, Tawana Still of Demorest; daughter and son-in-law, Monecia and Danny Simmons of Demorest; and grandchildren, Danny Still, Austin Still and Eric Simmons.

Paul Flowers
Memorial services for Paul Flowers, 60, of Baldwin will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 8, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. Ron Cope will officiate.
Mr. Flowers died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. Flowers was born on Oct. 30, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Thomas and Pauline Colley Flowers.
Mr. Flowers received a masters degree in education from the University of Georgia and taught in the Jackson County School system for a number of years. He was owner and operator of the School Factory, a school supply company. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the Cornelia Church of Christ. Mr. Flowers gave more to life than he took from it. He will be woefully missed by friends and family, but mostly by his beloved son and wife.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Stephens Flowers of Baldwin; son, Jason Flowers of Baldwin; stepson, Mickey Reynolds of Athens; stepdaughter, Penny Nuss of Athens; sister, Paulette Flowers of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Dale Flowers and Charles Flowers, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Neil Flowers of South Carolina; and three stepgrandchildren.

William Fred Cantrell
Funeral services for William Fred Cantrell, 85, of Sautee, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Chad Cantrell, the Rev. Guy Lee and the Rev. Darrell Westmoreland officiated with burial in the church cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of White County, Mr. Cantrell was a machinist and farmer. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Claudine Palmer Cantrell; infant son, Earl Cantrell; granddaughter, Tammy Westmoreland; brother, Daniel Cantrell; sisters, Della Abernathy, Louise Baker, Kate Sosebee Welborn and Ethel Cash; and brother-in-law, Buford Benfield.

Funeral services for Dennis 'Dent' Harkins, 68, of Cleveland will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Alexander's Gateway Chapel. The Rev. W.A. Jenkins, the Rev. Lee Cantrell and the Rev. Leroy Gooch will officiate with burial in Gateway Memorial Park, Cleveland.
Mr. Harkins died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Lanier Park Campus of Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.
A native of Hall County, Mr. Harkins had lived in White County for most of his life. He was the son of the late Arthur and Maude Gooch Harkins. He was a heavy equipment operator. Mr. Harkins was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Shannon Sutton.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Harkins of Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, Denton and Margaret Harkins of Mt. Airy; daughter, Patsy Harkins of Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Hazel and Lamar Swindoll of Cleveland, Helen and Richard Simpson of Cleveland, and Carol and Ricky Magness of Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, Hoyt and Maxine Harkins of Jackson County; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John William Duncan

Mr. Duncan died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Lanier Park campus.
Born in Hall County on Feb. 27, 1924, he was the son of the late John Dewey and Minnie Crumley Duncan. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herman Duncan, Vernon Duncan and Otho Duncan. Mr. Duncan was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a member of the Lula Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Belton Baptist Church, where he served as the oldest deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Ayers Duncan of Alto; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and the Rev. Tony Kemp of Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Duncan of Flowery Branch; sons, Winston Duncan of Delta Junction, Alaska, and Phillip Duncan of Baldwin; brothers, Qunnion Duncan of Franklin, and Jesse Duncan of Alto; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Charlie Carl Nix Jr., 81, of Glasgow, Ky., and native of Habersham County, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. Burial was in the Veterans of Foreign War Memorial Park.
Mr. Nix died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in Glasgow, Ky.
Born in Habersham County on March 22, 1922, he was the son of the late Charlie Carl Sr. and Fannie Williams Nix. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Crump Nix. Mr. Nix was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a retired insurance safety inspector and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Denise Ward of Glasgow, Ky.; son, Charles Nix of Hogansville; sisters, Evelyn Wright of Cornelia, Gladys Harper of Dallas, Janelle McComb of Minneapolis, Minn., and Diann Herrin of Cornelia; brothers, Melvin Nix of Cleveland, A.L. Nix of Auburn, John Nix of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dennis Nix of Clarkesville; and two grandchildren.

Gladys Nix Harper
Funeral services for Gladys Nix Harper, 75, of Dallas were held at noon Sunday, April 6, in the Rosehaven Chapel. Helen Shirley officiated with burial in Mozley Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Harper died Thursday, April 3, 2003.
Born May 18, 1927, in Alto, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Carl and Fannie Nix Sr. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert 'Pops' Harper; daughter, Norma Harper Landers; and brother, Charlie Nix Jr. Mrs. Harper was a former employee of Arrow Shirt Company and a member the Full Gospel Church of Lithia Springs and of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her brothers, Adger Nix of Auburn, Dennis Nix of Clarkesville, Melvin Nix of Cleveland, and John Nix of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Diann Herrin of Cornelia, Evelyn Wright of Cornelia, and Janelle McCombs of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Bobby and Michelle Landers and Michelle Groom; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in White County on Aug. 8, 1923, he was the son of the late Alford and Mary Holloway Dockery. Mr. Dockery was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing with 41 years of service. He was a member of Level Grove Baptist Church.
