Funeral services for Evelyn Gentry Cowart, 85, of Clarkesville will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 3, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. The Rev. Tim Burpee will officiate, with burial in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Cowart died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at a private nursing facility.
Born in Fulton County on May 18, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Susie E. Sims Gentry. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Clark and Joseph Claude Cowart. She was a homemaker and a volunteer worker with the Habersham County senior citizens. Mrs. Cowart was a member of Habersham Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include her son, Robert L. Clark of Seneca, S.C.; three granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

James Howell Farmer
Funeral services for James Howell Farmer, 72, of Sautee were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Alexander's Gateway Chapel Funeral Home. Matthew Gibson, the Rev. Wayne Sisk and the Rev. Darvin Slaton officiated.
Mr. Farmer died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Sautee, he was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Farmer was preceded in death by his father, Tom Farmer; and brother, Lat Farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Farmer of Sautee; daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Jimmy Thompson of Cornelia; son, Tommy Farmer of Cornelia; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Sharon Farmer of Jasper; mother, Menerva Farmer of Helen; sister, Linda Gibson of Cleveland; grandchildren, Scott and Bonnie Sanders of Clarkesville, Stacey Farmer of Murrayville; one great-grandson; stepgrandchildren, Donna Fleming of Demorest, Michael Cheek of Denver, Colo., Cindy Carpenter of Clarksville, Tenn.; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Willie Mae Thornton Irvin
Funeral services for Willie Mae Thornton Irvin, 95, of Athens were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Passmore and the Rev. Luther Fouche officiated, with burial in Gordons Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Irvin died Friday, May 30, 2003.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Irvin was a long-time resident of Athens. She was the daughter of the late William Mark and Nannie Mae Stone Thornton. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Young Irvin of Cornelia. Mrs. Irvin was retired from Southern Bell Company after 37 years of service. She was a member of Bell South Telephone Pioneers and a member of Gordons Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her brother, L.G. 'Gene' Thornton of Watkinsville; sisters, Mildred M. Coppenger of Lilburn, and Sybil Acree of Union Point; and several nieces and nephews.

Dollie J. Manley Williams
Funeral services for Dollie J. Manley Williams, 56, of Toccoa, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis Taylor officiated.
Mrs. Williams died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Stephens County Hospital.
Born on Dec. 28, 1946, in White County, she was the daughter of the late Lamar and Maude Louise Cleveland Manley. Mrs. Williams lived most of her life in Stephens County. She was a member of the Old Nacoochee Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Williams; brothers, Ed Taylor, R.L. Taylor, Otis Taylor; and sister, Julita Farmer.
Survivors include her sons, Troy Williams and Mack Williams, both of Toccoa, Dan Williams of Cleveland; brothers, Junior Taylor and Johnny Manley, both of Cornelia, Frank Manley of Toccoa; sister, Joyce Sosebee of Clarkesville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Hattie Mae Turpin Ivester
Funeral services for Hattie Mae Turpin Ivester, 90, of Turnerville will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Ronald DeMore and the Rev. Marty Kilby will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ivester died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.
Born in Habersham County on May 5, 1913, Mrs. Ivester was the daughter of the late Willie and Della Williams Turpin. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline Ivester; sons, Holman Ivester and Namon Ivester; and a grandson, Anthony Ivester.
Mrs. Ivester was a homemaker and a member of Shirley Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Reno Ivester of Turnerville; daughters, Elizabeth Cody of Hazel, N.C., and Gail Ivester of Turnerville; sons, Horace Ivester and George Ivester, both of Turnerville; a half-sister, Louise Whitfield of Turnerville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today, June 3, at the funeral home.

Sylvia Boling Echols
Funeral services for Sylvia Boling Echols, 88, of Lula will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Enon Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Echols died Monday, July 28, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Franklin County on Dec. 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William Columbus and Georgia Ariail Boling. She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Echols; brothers, Donald R. Boling, Bill Boling and Carl Boling; sisters, Irene Garrison and Rue Rice. She was the last remaining sibling of her family.
Mrs. Echols was a member of Enon Baptist Church and was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the Lubell Garden Club.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Winford Popphan of Lula; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Theresa Echols of Clarkesville; sisters-in-law, Louise Boling of Cornelia and Lois Sims of Alto; brothers-in-law, George Echols, Talmadge Echols and Clyde Echols, all of Alto; grandchildren, Brian Echols and Matthew Echols, both of Clarkesville, Jay Popphan of Smyrna, Capt. James H. Popphan of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., Cory Echols of Flowery Branch and Barbara Daniel of LaGrange; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special cousin, Clinton Fleming of Habersham Retreat in Baldwin.
The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, July 29. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

TOCCOA - Funeral services for Steve Terrell Brown, 47, of Toccoa, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerrell Beatty and Dr. Wade Bridges officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. today, July 29.
Mr. Brown died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Stephens County Hospital.
The son of Betty Nunn Brown and the late Bruce Terrell Brown, he was born Sept. 12, 1955, in Stephens County where he lived all his life. He worked for a number of years in dry wall installation. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Nunn Brown of Toccoa; three daughters, Kellie Brown, Kimberley Brown and Stevie Lynn Brown, all of Toccoa; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Melissa Harris of Toccoa; granddaughter, Emma Leigh Harris; sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Mike Carter of Toccoa; and a number of aunts, uncles and nieces.

Jessie Smith Welborn
Funeral services for Jessie Smith Welborn, 74, of Alto will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 29, at Mud Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Verner London officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Garrison officiating at graveside.
Mrs. Welborn died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1928, in Habersham County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raleigh and Cleo Heaton Smith; and her husband, T.C. Welborn. Mrs. Welborn was a homemaker and was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include, a daughter, Selina Walker of Cornelia; two sons, Charles Welborn of Cornelia and Harry Lee Welborn of Alto; two sisters, Louise Brown of Stratton, Ontario, Canada, and Sybil Landers of Cornelia; one brother, Raleigh William (R.W.) Smith of Iuka, Ill., and six grandchildren.

Betty Baumgardner
Funeral services for Betty Baumgardner, 81, of Clarkesville, formerly of Somerset, Penn., were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Paul's Church of Christ in Somerset, Penn. The Rev. Jay Shaffer officiated and burial followed in County Memorial Park.
Mrs. Baumgardner died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at a private nursing facility following an extended illness.
Born in Somerset, Penn., July 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John and Ivy Pearl King Duppstadt. She was a retired secretary and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Harry Baumgardner, and son, the Rev. Ken Baumgardner.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Elaine Baumgardner of Clarkesville; nephews, Dale Duppstadt of Mechanicsburgh, Penn., Authur Duppstadt of York, Penn., and Danny Duppstadt of Hershey, Penn., and several cousins.

Graveside services for Essie Cantor Wright, 87, of Cornelia, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, at Marietta U.S. National Cemetery. The Rev. Richard Scoggins officiated.
Mrs. Wright died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.
She was born in Big Stone Gap, Va., on April 1, 1916. She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Wright; a son, Gene Cantor; and a step-daughter, Vivian Castile. She was retired from Laurel Lodge with several years of service and was a homemaker.
Survivors include four grandchildren, Teresa Oliver and Toni Richardson, both of Graham, N.C., Faye Reynolds of Homer, and Maria Ragland of Atlanta; five great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
