Mrs. Rea died at her home in Menands, N.Y., on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003. The cause of death was complications due to long-term Parkinson's disease.
Mrs. Rea was born on Feb. 24, 1920, in Lexington, Va. Her father, John Mack Meeks and her mother, Frances Virginia Wilson Meeks, along with her only sibling, Robert, preceded her in death.
Elizabeth was a devoted and keen-eyed mother, a wise and supportive wife and a dignified Southern lady. Her life was highlighted by personal sacrifice for the benefit of others.
Mrs. Rea was a strong and independent young lady who attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and mastered in business administration. In April of 1941, Elizabeth married
the late Clyde Woodrow Rea, also from Virginia. They met while attending nearby colleges. They relocated a short time later in Troy, N.Y., where they together with Marshall Rea, opened and developed what became known as Marshall Ray Corporation on River Street. In the beginning, the factory produced parachutes and uniforms for soldiers in World War II and at the conclusion of the war, there was a demand for new fashions in men's outerwear. Marshall Ray Corporation was a pioneer in this segment of the fashion industry for over 40 years. Elizabeth initially set up the business office and administered the staff activities until the birth of her children. In the 1950s, Elizabeth moved with Clyde and the family to Cordele, where they spent the next several years extending the Marshall Ray business by building and opening a factory employing over 200 there.
Elizabeth, or "Libby" as her many friends called her, was a long-time active member of Memorial Methodist Church in Troy, now Hope United Methodist in Eagle Mills. She was a member of the Troy Country Club as well as Wolfert's Roost Country Club in Menands. She was an avid golfer and skilled bridge player. She also loved to play the piano and organ to the delight of her family and friends. She supported many charitable causes, but the Cerebral Palsy Association was very important to her.
Mrs. Rea is survived by her children, Jane R. Crotty of New York City, C.W. "Woody" Rea of Los Altos Hills, Calif., and Steven C. Rea of Loudonville, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, John, Elizabeth and David Crotty and C.W. "Tripp" Rea, III and Brooke Rea, as well as two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home in Troy, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Association or to Hope United Methodist Church.
