Stan Stephens
MACON — Stan Stephens, 70, of Montezuma, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Zion Hope cemetery in Crisp County.
Mr. Stephens was a native of Crisp County and was a self-employed textiles engineer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sammie Dickerson Stephens
Survivors include his son, Standford “Steve” O. Stephens Jr. and wife Loren of Montezuma; daughter, Sammie "Tammy” Stephens Roberts and husband Robert of Dawsonville; brother, Thomas Edmund Stephens Jr. of Cobb; sisters, Dorothy Crook of Carrollton and Cheryl Arnold of Hawkinsville; grandchildren, Brandy Kelly Dowdy, Jonathan Stowers, Storm Roberts, Standford “Tripp” O. Stephens III, Taylor Stephens and Jessica “Jessie” Stephens.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, April 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Hughes and Wright Funeral Home.

Evans ‘Junior’ Dowdell
CORDELE — Funeral services for Evans “Junior” Dowdell, 91, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Willie Grover will officiate the services.
Mr. Dowdell died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehab.
Born Feb. 28, 1914, in Sumter County, Mr. Dowdell was the youngest child and only son of the late James Pope Dowdell and Nancy Holmes Dowdell. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Annie Dowdell Harris. At a young age, he joined Shady Grove Baptist Church in Sumter County and also attended public schools in Sumter County. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving four years. He was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He worked with his father and mother for many years at Dowdell Funeral Home, and later became a bank courier. He retired after several years at this job. Junior was an active member of the American Legion Post 542 until his health began to fail.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Denver Chaney Dobbs of Lawrenceville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one nephew, Comm. James D. (Lucille) Harris; several great nieces and nephews; several cousins, including a devoted one, Martha Robinson of Tift County; and a devoted friend, Rosebud Grant.

CORDELE — Funeral services for Della Mae Rouse will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the sanctuary of Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hardshell Cemetery. Pastor Johnny B. Dean will officiate the services.
Mrs. Rouse died Tuesday, April 5, 2005.
Survivors include her mother, Annie Bell Dixon of Cordele; her god-daughter, Brenijia Necolle Oliver of Cordele; a sister, Ethel Neal of Tampa, Fla.; a god-sister, Brenda Ford of Cordele; brothers, Emmit Roundtree, Earnest Roundtree and Sam Roundtree all of Cordele, and Charles Roundtree of Belle Glade, Fla.; and cousins, Elizabeth Telfair, Mamie Mapp, William Mapp, Mary Woods and Pastor Johnny B. Bobby Lee Ray
BELLE GLADE, Fla. — Funeral services for Bobby Lee Ray, formerly of Cordele, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the sanctuary of Little Rock Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Little Rock Cemetery. The Rev. Lorendo Ray will officiate the services.
Mr. Ray died Monday, April 4, 2005.
Survivors include a daughter, Nikita Ray of Florida; four grandchildren; brothers, Manuel Ray, Ozzie (Hattie) Ray and Ruby J. Eddie Thompson
CORDELE — Eddie Thompson, 58, of Cordele died at his residence Wednesday, April 6, 2005.
Born Sunday, May 26, 1946, in Savannah, he was the son of Dorothy Luree Thompson of Bloomingdale and the late Claudine Thompson, and the husband of Nella Frank Scott Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was employed as a maintenance engineer for the Georgia State Department of Defense. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was a member of the adult choir. He was also an active member of the Richard T. Turner Masonic Lodge of Pooler, Yaarab Shrine Temple of Atlanta, Arab Guard Unit of Shrine of Atlanta, the Sweet Water Shrine Club of Douglasville where he was a past president, Crape Myrtle Chapter OES of Albany and the Pateville Community Club.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services Inc. iIntermentwill follow at Zion Hope cemetery in Crisp County.
He is survived by his wife, Nella Frank Scott Thompson of Cordele; his mother, Dorothy Luree Thompson of Bloomingdale; his daughters, Melissa T. and Lester Phillips of Eden, Marie Reddick of Guyton, Ashley Thompson of Rincon; step-sons, Darrell and Kathy Raines of Woodstock, Scotty Raines of Cordele, and Kyle and Lynn Raines of Eatonton; brothers, Neal Thompson of Port Wentworth, Mack Thompson of Marlow, Bobby Thompson and Larry Thompson, both of Bloomingdale, and Terry Thompson of South Guyton; sisters, Martha and Aubrey Davis and Judy Brant, all of Brooklet; grandchildren, Lester Phillips Jr., Aaron Phillips, Justice Reddick, Miliah Reddick and Madisin Raines and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lavon Thompson.

Harry Joe Clayton
VIENNA — Funeral services for Harry Joe Clayton, 49, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 23, 2005, in the Evangelistic Tabernacle Church of God in Vienna. Burial will follow in Forest Chapel Cemetery, Pinehurst. Bishop Arthur West will officiate the services.
Mr. Clayton died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, in a local hospital.
He was the son of the late Willie B. and Eva Mae Clayton and was a member of the Evangelistic Tabernacle Church of God. He attended Dooly County Schools.
Survivors include a son, Jermaine Clayton of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Marzell (Fletcher) Washington of Vienna, and Bobbie (Tommy) Lester of Atlanta; a brother, Curtis (Dorothy) Clayton of Missouri; two aunts, Mattie Breedlove of Vienna, and Lena McCrary of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

CORDELE — Funeral services for Myrtle Estelle Hammond, 84, of Cordele will be held in the chapel Of Rainey Family Funeral Services Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Rebecca.
Mrs. Hammond died at her residence in Cordele Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005.
She was born Wednesday, April 13, 1921 in Pitts and was the daughter of the late Cicero Richard Davis and Nancy Jane Owens Davis and the widow of Shirley Tifton Hammond. Mrs. Hammond was a grocery clerk (RET) and attended Cordele Church of God of Prophecy.
She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Estelle French of Maryland, Betty Nipper and Brenda Hammond, both of Cordele; a sister, Jurelle Shirah of Cumming; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest Tifton “Junior “ Hammond and William Richard "Dickie" Hammond; a brother, Delma Davis; and her sisters, Lula Mae Peterson, Lucille Woodard, Alline Bellener and Ester Ellsworth.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 from 6 until 8 p.m.

UNADILLA — Graveside services for Evelyn Purves, 86, of Warner Robins will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 at Walnut cemetery in Unadilla.
Mrs. Purves died Friday, Oct. 21, 2005 in a Warner Robins hospital.

Florence Calhoun Johnson
CORDELE — Private graveside services for Florence Calhoun Johnson, 86, of Cordele will be held Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 at Crisp Regional Nursing & Rehab.
She was a native of Crisp County and a homemaker. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church where she was a member of the 39ers.
She is survived by a daughter; Ruth Cook of Cordele; a sister, Bobbie Griger of Warner Robins; three grandsons, Jeffery Cook, Phillip Cook and Charlie Cook, and five great grandchildren.

Mary John Davis McCorvey
ASHBURN — Funeral services for Mary John Davis McCorvey, 79, of Ashburn will be held Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. McCorvey died Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 at Perry Funeral Chapel.
Joel H. Adkins
VIENNA — Funeral services for Joel H. Adkins, 84, of 215 North Sixth Street Vienna, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 in vienna with Dr. J.W. Wallis and Dr. Keithen Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in Vienna City Cemetery.
Adkins died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005 at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele.
Adkins was born on June 29, 1921 in the house where he resided at the time of his death. His parents were Tilden Adkins and Florrie Morgan Adkins. He served as a Medical Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the bronze star for his heroic rescue of patients at a surgical hospital in the Philippines during an enemy bombing attack. He was an inspector with the State Health Department and following his retirement he owned and operated Joel’s Antiques for 25 years. He was active in the antique business at the time of his death. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Vienna.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tilden du Bignon Adkins, Dr. Henry T. Adkins, and Woodrow Wilson Adkins and by his sisters, Emma Clifford Cofer, Eloise Roberta Adkins, Florrie Belle Fokes and Evelyn Morgan Hunter.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family greeted friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 at the funeral home.
