James A. Schmidt
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - James A. Schmidt, 70, of Jacksonville, Fla., died suddenly on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, at Andersonville National Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Beckham will officiate.
A native of Americus, Mr. Schmidt grew up on the family farm, Hillcrest Dairy in Sumter County. Growing up, he and his family attended the First Baptist Church of Americus. Mr. Schmidt graduated from Americus High School in 1953, and was a football letterman. An Eagle Scout, Mr. Schmidt was active with the Boy Scouts his entire life. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Schmidt was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed for 23 years with GE, and also was a licensed real estate agent for more than 30 years. Mr. Schmidt was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for more than 20 years and was an avid sailor, earning his yachting license. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, and attended Beach United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Hart and her husband, Jason of Smyrna; three step-daughters, Christa Anderson of Atlanta, Dee Anderson O'Connor and her husband, Mike of Savannah, and Leslie Anderson Brodnax and her husband, George of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Benjamin Hart, Robert Hart and Virginia Hart all of Smyrna; his former wife, Judy Downing of Savannah; two sisters, including his twin, Jean Schmidt Bowen and her husband, Dr. John M. of Athens, Mary Ann Schmidt Williams and her husband, John C. of Pearson; a brother-in-law, Luther F. Wood of Albany; one niece and seven nephews.
The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern Friday prior to the service from 10-11:30 a.m.
There will be a memorial service for Mr. Schmidt in Atlanta at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2006, at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill.
The family will receive friends at H. M. Patterson & Son from 3-4 p.m.

Mr. Jackson died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin.
Hiwatha 'Buddy' Williams
UNADILLA - Funeral services for Hiwatha 'Buddy' Williams, 62, will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 11, 2006, in the Camp Creek First Baptist Church in Unadilla. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Pastor J.T. Hill will officiate the services.
Mr. Williams died Thursday, May 4, 2006, in Unadilla.
He was the son of the late Howard and Ester Anderson Williams and was born in Houston County. He attended Dooly County public schools and was a member of Camp Creek First Baptist Church. He worked for the City of Unadilla for 22 years.
Survivors include three sisters, Georgia L. Stevenson of Jacksonville, Fla., Pearl Russell of New Jersey and Ora Dean Brown of Albany; two brothers, Waymond (Schenida) Williams of Albany, and Raymond Williams of Unadilla; a sister-in-law, Ola M. Williams of New Jersey; a brother-in-law, A.B. Brown of Montezuma; a devoted nephew and caregiver, Royzell (Denise) Washington of Byron; and a devoted cousin, Glechian Thomas of Unadilla.

CORDELE - Funeral services for Bobby Taylor, 47, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, in the A.S. Clark Elementary School Auditorium. Burial will follow in Bethel City Cemetery. The Rev. David L. Brown will officiate the services.
Mr. Taylor died Saturday, May 6, 2006, at his residence.

LEESBURG - Funeral services for Betty Thirlaway, 69, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2006, in Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Home in Albany. Burial will follow in Sharon Baptist Church cemetery in Cordele.
Mrs. Thirlaway died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at her residence.
A native of Cullman, Ala., Mrs. Thirlaway lived in Lee County for five years, moving from Americus where she retired from the Tog Shop after 30 years. She attended Sharon Baptist Church in Cordele.
Survivors include her parents, Sylvester and Bernice Morrison of Cordele; two sons, Roger Sullivan and his wife, Anita of Leesburg, and Jimmy Sullivan of Savannah; a daughter, Judy Trull of Vidalia; two brothers, Cranford Morrison of Clearwater, Fla., and James D. Morrison of Cordele; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Shelia Marie Pope Keene
ABBEVILLE - Funeral services for Shelia Marie Pope Keene, 38, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2006, in Kramer Baptist Church. Burial followed in Morningside Cemetery. The Revs. Talmadge Wilcox and Bobby Pope officiated the services.
Mrs. Keene died Saturday, May 6, 2006, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
Born Sept. 8, 1967, in Pulaski County, she had lived in Wilcox County for the past eight years. She was the daughter of Brenda Gordon Pope Medlock and the late Donald Pope. She was a licensed practical nurse and member of Kramer Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother and step-father, Brenda and Billy Medlock of Cordele; her husband, Ken Keene of Abbeville; two sons, Curt Keene and Bo Keene both of Abbeville; a brother, Donnie Pope of Cordele; a step-sister, Robin Littleton of Bridgeboro; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald and Ann Keene of Abbeville.

Virginia Augusta Cash Everett
SYLVESTER - Funeral services for Virginia Augusta Cash Everett, 92, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sunnyside cemetery in Cordele. Dr. Tom Jacobs will officiate the services.
Mrs. Everett died Monday, May 8, 2006, at her residence.
Born Aug. 21, 1913, in Garfield, she was the daughter of the late Silas W. Cash and Anna Belle Cash, and was the widow of the late Herman Felton Everett, who preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1978. Mrs. Everett was reared in Byromville and she and her husband reared their three children in Cordele, where they lived for 21 years before moving to Sylvester. She, along with her husband, co-owned Texaco Distributorships in Sylvester and Cordele, and Evro Gas in Sylvester where they worked side by side for many years. Mrs. Everett was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church and the T.E.L. Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann E. Livingston of Sylvester (formerly of Cordele), and Jean E. Brooks o Sylvester; a son, H. Douglas Everett (Janice) of Sylvester and Atlanta; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph and Josephine Cash, Archie Cash, Catherine Cash and Florence C. McLendon.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral at the First Baptist Church in Sylvester.

D.C. 'Bill' Burk Jr.
AMERICUS - Funeral services for D.C. 'Bill' Burk Jr., 77, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Reed Crumbliss officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church are requested to serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Burk died Sunday, May 7, 2006, from injuries sustained in an automobile crash while on his way home from a deacon's meeting he had attended at Bethel Baptist Church.
A native of Sumter County, Mr. Burk was born Feb. 18, 1929, the son of the late Dow Clifton Burk Sr. and Sara Marguerite Fowler Burk. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and served as a teacher and coach for two years in Morgan, before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1950. After serving four years in the Air Force, he became the manager of the surplus property warehouse at South Georgia Technical School from which he retired in 1984. He was a member and deacon at Bethel Baptist Church and through the years had served in many leadership roles in the church, including his service as a Sunday School teacher and a nursery attendant. His love for the church was well-known, an dhis family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 846 Lane Store Road, Americus, Ga., 31709.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Beverly M. Burk; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kay Hofland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Leigh Ann and Gene Webb of Leesburg; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Burk of Pinehurst; grandchildren, Kristen Burk and Brad Burk both of Pinehurst, Justin Hofland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bo Webb of Leesburg.

Mrs. Cooper died Saturday, May 13, 2006, in Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Born in Clark County, Wisc., she was the daughter of the late Clarence Henry Vick and Neveda McKinzie Vick. She was a member of the Unadilla Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #206. Mrs. Cooper volunteered as a Pink Lady at Crisp Regional Hospital for many years and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cooper.
Survivors include her sons, Thomas E. (Diane) Cooper of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Jim H.
