William Maxwell 'Max' Hancock

MYSTIC - Graveside services for William Maxwell 'Max' Hancock, 31, of Irwin County will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the Mystic cemetery in Irwin County. The Rev. Terrell Roberts will officiate the services, directed by Paulk Funeral Home of Fitzgerald. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Hancock died Sunday, May 14, 2006.

LaBryon Z. Merritt

CORDELE - Funeral services for LaBryon Z. Merritt, 2, will be held at 1 p.m. today, May 19, 2006, in Gethsemane Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.

Master Merritt died Monday, May 15, 2006.

Survivors include his parents, Felicia and Clifford Merritt of Cordele; five brothers and one sister, Courtney M. Reese, Cedric L. Jones, Zabreon M. Reese, Latravious Q. Williams, Montevious R. Jones and Dezirya Z. Merritt all of Cordele; his godparents, Dwight and Shenika Nelson of Cordele; his grandparents, Carolyn Williams, Wilma Deriso and J.L. (Ruby) Williams all of Cordele, and Clifford (Marie) Merritt Sr. of Americus; his great-grandparents, Tommy (Mary) Scott of Abbeville, Alice Deriso of Vienna, and McArthur Deriso of Desoto; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Nadine Watkins Moore

ASHBURN - Graveside funeral services for Nadine Watkins Moore, 84, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 19, 2006, in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30-3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Moore died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

MSgt. Marvin Johnson

FT. WALTON BEACH, Fla. - Funeral services for MSgt. (Ret.) Marvin Johnson, formerly of Cordele, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, in the sanctuary of Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Fredrick Robinson will officiate the services.

Mr. Johnson died Tuesday, May 16, 2006.

The processional will be led by Rev. Robinson and Rev. James and the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church Junior Choir will sing a selection. Prayer and Scripture will be read by the Rev. Dan James III and the choir will sing another selection. Reflections will be given by family members and friends, followed by a song by the choir. The family will be presented with an African-American heirloom Bible as a keepsake from the funeral home staff.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Johnson of Cordele; his children, Lovette Rene Johnson and Cassandra Patrice Johnson of Cordele, Reginald Keith Johnson of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Regina (Ricky) Allen of Newnan and June Johnson of Ft. Valley; brothers, Jimmie Lee (Lillian) Johnson of Albany, and Mandle Lee (Mae Lizzie) Johnson of Lilly; a sister, Caldon (Rev. Soloman) Wallace of Vienna; an aunt, Mollie Lester of Albany; a sister-in-law, Ida Rose Oliver of Cordele; eight grandchildren, Erica, Jaquis, Andrea, Jasmine, Stephon, Mak'la, Samone, Rikki and Kaye; three great-grandchildren, Hymetheus, Eraneshia and Rongee; and nieces and nephews, Linda, Bridgett, Carla, Nikki, Sandra, Jean, Lee, Andrew, Crandell and Bill.

James Jackson Burkett

CORDELE - Funeral services for James Jackson Burkett will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, in the sanctuary of Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. James Wedges will officiate the services.

Mr. Burkett died Wednesday, May 10, 2006.

The processional will be led by Rev. Wedges and the choir will sing a selection. Prayer and Scripture will be offered by the Rev. L.D. Cobb Sr. and Bro. Norris Mathis will sing a selection. Reflections will be given by family members and friends and the choir will sing another selection. Pierce, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Williams of Miami, Fla.; 21 grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Ivory, Casey, Earlene, Antonio, Ray, James, Tabatha, Tasha, Rodney, Quantavious, Angela (Charles), Octavius, LaShonda, Otavio, Valencia, Steve, Rontavius, Amanda, Travis and Shaquille; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and his in-laws, Lester (Williema) Williams of Cordele, and Willie C. (Peggy) Williams of Miami, Fla.

ASHBURN - Funeral services for Paula Gwendolyn Murray, 51, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, in the Ashburn First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Murray died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, in Tift Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Hubert Snyder Rhodes

ABBEVILLE - Funeral services for Hubert Snyder Rhodes, 75, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 21, 2006 at Lebanon Baptist Church. Richard Rhodes and the Rev. Chuck Taylor will officiate. iIntermentwill be held in the Lebanon cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Mr. Rhodes died Friday, May 19, 2006 from his residence.

He was born December 6, 1930 in Wilcox County to the late Samuel Joseph Rhodes and Rachel Taylor Rhodes. He served in the United States Navy from 1948-1950. He was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and song leader. He was retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base. He was a member of the Western Light Masonic Lodge #272 F&AM; and the Albany Hasan Shrine Temple and the Ben Hillbillies. He served on the Wilcox County School Board from 1991-1998. He was a farmer, Santa to many and Pap Pap to many. He was an avid Ocmulgee River fisherman and hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Jueivene Rhodes of Abbeville; son, Hubert Snyder Rhodes Jr. of Abbeville; daughters, Jan Rhodes Hammond and son-in-law William J. Hammond M.D. of Fitzgerald, and Denise Rhodes Stubbs and son-in-law Mickey Stubbs of Rochelle; brother, Sam Rhodes of Abbeville; sister, Mary D. Walker of Abbeville; and grandchildren, Heather Hammond, Will Hammond, Taylor Hammond, Chandler Hammond, Hunter Stubbs, Madison Stubbs, Jessie Rhodes and Jenna Rhodes.

Frazier and Son Funeral Home of Rochelle has charge of these arrangements.

Vester O. Hannah, Jr.

UNADILLA - Funeral services for Vester O. Hannah Jr., 74, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 21, 2006 in Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Unadilla. iIntermentwill follow in Walnut Cemetery.

Mr. Hannah died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 in Dalton.

Malasia Daquioa McKenzie

CORDELE 'Baby girl Malasia Daquioa McKenzie, the infant daughter of Sheermah McKenzie and Temarkus Kerenes, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 from Crisp Regional Hospital. The family may be contacted at 504 7th Avenue East in Cordele.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Nance & Sons Mortuary, LLC.

Raymond Robert Lique

ALBANY — Funeral services for Raymond Robert Lique, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors with interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Dr. William Sims III will officiate the services.

Mr. Lique died Monday, June 5, 2006, in Lee County Health Care.

He was retired from Harris Press and Shear Company in Cordele, no known as American Hoist after 33 years. He was a member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church in Albany, and was a former member for many years at Morningside Baptist Church in Cordele, where he was active in the brotherhood. Mr. Lique was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary F. Lique of Albany; two daughters, Donna Mock and her husband, Bill of Albany, and Claudette Slade and her husband, Lee of Hawkinsville; a son, Robert E. Lique of Nicholsville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Shaun Lique, Cecelia Miller, Raymond “Buddy” Lique, Tracie Shaver, Amanda Schreiner, Allison Meeks, Bethany Howard and Carrie Mock; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Eaton of Charlestown, N.H., and Irene Welch of Exeter, N.H.; a brother, Ronald Lique of Ocala, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Wright of Ocala, Fla.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David and Charles Lique, a grandson, Matthew Taylor, two sisters and one brother.

Those desiring may make donations to the Living Legacy at Byne Memorial Baptist Church, 2832 Ledo Road, Albany, Ga., 31707.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elise Bruce Bray Richey

ROCHELLE — Graveside services for Elise Bruce Bray Richey, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Oconee Hill cemetery with Dr. Bill Ross officiating.

Mrs. Richey died Monday, June 5, 2006, in St. Augustine, Fla., in the care of her only niece, Elaine H. Darnold.

A native of Athens, Ga., she had resided in Rochelle for the past 60 years. Mrs. Richey was the daughter of the late Mell Saust and Florence Newsom Bray of Athens, and was preceded in death by her sister, Idyrene Higginbotham, also of Athens. She graduated from Athens High School and the University of Georgia where she received a bachelor of science degree in home economics. Mrs. Richey received her master’s degree with honors from Columbia University in New York City, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rochelle.

In addition to her niece, Elaine H. Darnold, two nephews also survive: Ira Higginbotham and Barry Bray.

Christine McGahee Barrow

CORDELE — Funeral services were held for Christine McGahee Barrow at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. The Rev. James Kelley officiated the services. Burial followed in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Tommie Jean Beacham, organist, provided soft music for the service. She also accompanied Walter Bartee as he sang “How Great Thou Art.” Julie Chastain sang “It Is Well With My Soul” to taped accompaniment.

Pallbearers were Jack Cromer, Junior Purvis, Richard Hall, Wayne Castleberry, Larry Hayslip, Gene Banks and Billy Wayne Priest.

Hughes & Wright Funeral Home was entrusted with these arrangements.

Luetrell Burnette

CORDELE — Funeral services for Nettie Luetrell Burnette were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2006, in Union Baptist Church in Wilcox County. The Revs. Billy Lee and Jack Dowdy conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Beth Bulloch, organist, played soft music. Geraldine Hogan, soloist, sang “Since He Gave My Life A New Start” and “Clear Title.”

Pallbearers were Anthony Burnette, Daniel Burnette, Brad Henderson, Michael Olds, Joey Olds and Richard Nutt. Deacons of Union Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

The committal service was in Seville Cemetery.

Joe Fred Smith
MACON — Joe Fred Smith, 90, died Tuesday at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, in St. Francis Episcopal Church, Macon, with burial at 3 p.m. in Magnolia Park Cemetery, Warner Robins. Father Dan Edwards will officiate.
The family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street and asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 432 Forest Hill Road, Macon, GA 31210.
Mr. Smith, son of the late John Wilson Smith and Rebeccah Cross Smith, was born in Pineview. He was a 1935 graduate of Pineview High School, earned his bachelor of science degree from Berry College, his master of science degree from Auburn University and his six-year degree from the University of Georgia. Already an educator, Mr. Smith was drafted at age 32 into the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was in public education for more than 37 years, serving as high school principal in Dooly County and was the first principal at Westside Elementary School in Warner Robins. During his tenure, Westside became the first school in Warner Robins to provide television in every room. With his wife and two children, he spent many happy summers camping and Airstream Trailering in every state but Hawaii. Mr. Smith had served as the president of the Georgia Unit of Airstream Trailering in Helen. He also loved building and built homes for his family doing the wiring and the plumbing. We believe his natural mechanical abilities live in his son, Norman, an orthopedic surgeon, in his daughter, Brenda, a potter, and in his grandson, John, a mechanical engineer. Joe Smith had a heart for people and lived a great life.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Theresa Hallmark Smith of Macon; his son, Dr. Norman Joe (Gloria) Smith of Macon; his daughter, Brenda (John) High of Rocky Mount, N.C.; his grandchildren, John Daniel High, Abigail High, Rachel High, Colby Joseph (Cassie) Smith and Rita (Thomas) Aldridge; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Billy Smith Sr. of Birmingham, Ala., and nieces and nephews.

L. Michael ‘Mike’ Morgan
CORDELE — Funeral services for L. Michael “Mike” Morgan of Cordele will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 8, 2006, in the Cordele First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.
Mr. Morgan, 53, died at Crisp Regional Hospital Tuesday, June 6, 2006.
Born Friday, Jan. 16, 1953, in Bibb County, he was the son of Dorothy Johnson Morgan and the late Eddie Lee Morgan. He was a graduate of Georgia Southwestern College and a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Mr. Morgan was the manager of Cordele Sash, Door and Lumber Company and attended Cordele First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Emma Urquhart Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie Carole Hunt Morgan of Cordele; his mother, Dorothy Morgan of Cordele; his children, Ashley Brooke Morgan, Michael Adam Morgan and Anna Alicia Morgan all of Cordele; and a sister and her husband, Sheila and Robert Jackson of Cordele.
