Owen Williams McKinney
FAIRFIELD, Ala. — Owen Williams McKinney died in the early morning hours at home on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at the age of 93.
Born Jan. 21, 1913, in Cordele, Crisp County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Oscar and Lucia Owen McKinney and was one of five children. He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Marjorie McKinney Milligan, Joseph Oscar McKinney and Dr. John Julias McKinney. In World War II, Mr. McKinney served as a Seabee in the Pacific Campaign, and was involved in the construction industry in Birmingham after the war through the early 1960’s. He was a lifelong member of the International Association of Bridge Structural Ornamental and Reinforcing Workers’ Union Local 92. In the early 1960’s, Mr. McKinney was involved in a serious industrial accident and was semi-retired until his death. He was very active in his church, Fairfield First Baptist Church, until it disbanded in late 2005, and in his local community with a large circle of close friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Bagley McKinney; his sister, Ouida McKinney Thompson and her husband, Dr. William R. Thompson of Calhoun; nieces, Carol Milligan McSwain and Susan Milligan of Scottsdale and Phoenix, Ariz.; nephews, John McKinney of Augusta, William McKinney of Atlanta, William Thompson of Calhoun, John Thompson of Peachtree City, and David Thompson of Hobbs, N.M.
Funeral services will be handled by the John Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham and a viewing will be held from 1-2 p.m. today at the chapel located on Dennison Avenue SW. The funeral service will be held immediately thereafter beginning at p.m. with burial following in the Elmwood Cemetery.
William ‘Bill’ David Speir
HAWKINSVILLE — Graveside funeral services for William “Bill” David Speir, 73, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2006, in Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Taylor County. The Rev. Bud Womack officiated the services.
Mr. Speir died Wednesday, April 12, 2006.
A native of Dooly County, he was a member of the Baptist faith. He was retired from G. Heileman Brewery in Perry and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was preceded in death by his parents, Atlatia Westbrook Speir and Ethel Evans Speir, and a brother, Willard Speir.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Albitton Speir of Hawkinsville; a son, Ricky (Paula) Speir of Hawkinsville; sisters, Winnie (J.W.) Womack of Cordele, and Margaret Pope of Rochelle.

Wyolene Ellis Blue
ASHBURN — Funeral services for Wyolene Ellis Blue, 96, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 18, 2006, in the Ashburn First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn has charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Blue died Sunday, April 16, 2006, in Ashburn Health Care following a lengthy illness.
Brantley ‘Man’ Pate
PONTIAC, Mich. — 'Funeral services for Brantley “Man” Pate, 65, formerly of Dooly County, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, in Evergreen Baptist Church in Pinehurst. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. David Thomas will officiate the services.
Mr. Pate died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, in Michigan.
He was the son of the late Henry and Mattie Pate of Pinehurst. He was retired from the General Motors Corp. and was a member of the Greater Mt. Calvary Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shanequa Hunt Pate; his children, Veronica Pate of Unadilla, Brantley Pate II and Bravtorvance Pate both of Moultrie, Rotondo (Berry) Freeman of Warren, Mich., Markeita Selvy and Romaine Pate of Pontiac, Mich.; a step-son, Germaine Selvy of Ionia, Mich; two sisters, Alma Pickenpack of Bronx, N.Y., and Mildred Taylor of Detroit, Mich; a god-son, Charles Johnson of Moultrie; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many other friends and relatives.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Willie Henry Williams
CORDELE — Funeral services for Willie Henry Williams, 53, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, in Little Rock Baptist Church in Arabi. Burial will follow in Little Rock Cemetery. The Rev. Bobby Lee Robinson will officiate the services.
Mr. Williams died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, in a local healthcare facility.
Born Dec. 4, 1952, in Arabi, he was the son of the late Willie T. Williams and Marie Williams. He attended public schools and local churches and received his basic education and religious training during early childhood. He was engaged in the agricultural industry most of his life, and most recently, was an independent contractor for the Cordele Dispatch. During young adulthood he married
Angela B. Brown and together they had one daughter. Willie Henry, as he was commonly known, acquired many friends during his lifetime. He was kind, generous and willing to go an extra mile for his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Angela Brown Williams of Cordele; a daughter, Inez Marie Williams of Cordele; a step-daughter, Octavia (Brandon Lytle) Brown of Warner Robins; his grandchild, Demorian; a step-grandchild, Adrian Lytle; sisters and brothers, Della Ree Williams Moore of Warwick, Rose M. CORDELE — Funeral services for Jimmy Davis, 58, of Cordele will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services. iIntermentwill follow at Woodlawn cemetery in Eastman.
Mr. Davis died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, in Coliseum Northside Hospital in Macon.
He was born Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1948, in Dodge County, the son of the late Ernest L. and Evelyn Bracewell Davis. Mr. Davis was a retired district manager for First Franklin Financial where he had been employed for 33 years. Before retirement, he had been very actively involved, which included coaching, in the Little League program. He had served as president of the Church Softball League for 11 years and had played in the City League. He was a member Vienna Church of God.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Patricia Davis of Cordele; two daughters, Julie Davis and Jessica Davis both of Cordele; and his devoted dogs, Sandy and Baby.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today.

ROCHELLE — Funeral services for Bruce W. LeGrier, 38, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, in Travel Home Baptist Church in Abbeville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Benard Jones will officiate the services, directed by Ferguson Funeral Home of Rochelle.

William Charles Hurt Sr.
CORDELE — William Charles Hurt Sr., 61, of Cordele died in Darlington, S.C., Friday, Aug. 18, 2006.
Mr. Hurt was born Thursday, April 12, 1945, in Americus, the son of the late Robert Toy Hurt and Virginia Claire Mixon Hurt. He was the co-owner and manager of Hurt Motor Company and a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 20, 2006, in the Cordele First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Beatrice Short Hurt; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Anna Hurt of Cordele; two daughters, BeaBea Easterling and her husband, Guy of Hawkinsville, and Ruth Hurt of Sandy Springs; three brothers and their wives, Dr. Robert T Jr. and Glynes Hurt, James and Laura Lee Hurt, and Harry and Kay Hurt all of Cordele; and three grandchildren, Anna Olsen and Andy Easterling both of Hawkinsville, and Alla Hurt of Cordele.

CORDELE — A memorial service for William Charles Hurt Sr. was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, in the Cordele First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Warren Williams and Lee Guerry conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
Norma Turton, pianist, and Ann Lancaster, organist, played soft music. They accompanied Shearer Turton as he sang “Sweet Beulah Land” and “I Can Only Imagine.”

CORDELE — Funeral services for Doris C. Johnson were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Inaha Cemetery. Father Lawrence Lucree officiated the services.
Marcene Freeman, pianist, played the prelude and postlude. She accompanied Teri Freeman as she sang “Amazing Grace” and “Precious Memories.” The service concluded with the playing of “Go Rest High On That Mountain.”
Pallbearers were Jody Johnson, Randy Nixon, Bubba Bridges, Charlie McBurnell, Sammy Calhoun and Michael Powers.

CORDELE — Funeral services were held for Doris Cox Hobbs at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial followed at Sunnyside Cemetery. The Revs. Billy Forrest and Royce Freeman officated the services.
Marcene Freeman, pianist, provided soft music for the service. She accompanied the Rev. Freeman and herself as they sang “What Will I Leave Behind” and “Sweet By and By.”

Mrs. Hardegree died at Crisp Regional Hospital Friday, September 1, 2006.
She was born Friday, August 23, 1918 in Wilcox County and was the daughter of the late James Golden and Annie Sue Guest Griffith.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hardegree was a member of the OPEL Club and the Lioness Club.
She was also the former Registrar and a poll worker for Crisp County.
She is survived by her children, Tommy Hardegree and his wife, Charline of Opelika, AL, Jimmy Hardegree and his wife, Jo Ann of Watkinsville and Sarian Spires and her husband, Dan of Cordele; five grandchildren, Jet Bailey and her husband, Roy of Tucker, Bubba Hardegree of Opelika, AL, Jason Spires and his wife, Shelley, and Matthew Spires and his wife, Gennifer, all of Cordele, and Julie Rook and her husband, Dan of Athens; and four great-grandchildren, Kaleb Spires, McCall Hardegree, Champ Hardegree and Ellis Rook.
