Mattie Bodrey Baker

CORDELE — Funeral services for Mattie Bodrey Baker will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 31 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Penia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Baker, 84, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehab. She was a member of Penia Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was born on Sunday, Oct. 29, 1922, to the late James H. Bodrey and the late Mamie Kathrine Arnold Bodrey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Carl D. Baker, and a daughter, Eloise Baker.

She is survived by her sons, Farrow Baker and his wife Yvonne, and Donald Baker and his wife, Patricia all of Cordele; her daughters, Martha Baker and Yvonne Walker and her husband, William all of Cordele; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hughes & Wright Funeral Home is entrusted with these arrangements.

Jeff Walls

CORDELE — Funeral services were held for Jeff Walls at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Penia Baptist Church. The Revs. Danny Powers and Lawton Sammons officiated the service. Burial followed in the Penia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Paula Faye Owens, organist, played before and after the service. T.J. Mauldin accompanied himself on the piano as he sang “Amazing Grace.” Billy White sang “Holy Ground” and “Beulah Land” to prerecorded accompaniment.

Pallbearers were Tom Millwood, Tim Faircloth, Paul Brown, Randy Johnson, Jeff Parker, Richard Stewart and Larry Hulett.

Honorary Pallbearers were employees of Home Depot.

Gertrude Stephens Fields
1915-2005
Athens, GA

Mrs. Gertrude Stephens Fields, 89, of Athens passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005.

Mrs. Fields was a native and lifetime resident of Clarke County. She was a Seamstress and a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Fields, and four brothers, J. C. Stephens, Lloyd Stephens, William Stephens, and Ernest Stephens. She is survived by a sister, Delores Horne of Athens and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at Bernstein Funeral at 4:00 pm with the Rev. Tom Lang and Rev. Mike Purdy officiating. iIntermentwill be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flower, donations can be made to Forest Heights Baptist Church, 1155 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

Bernstein Funereal Home is in charge of arrangements.

John S. Akin Sr.

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Funeral services for John S. Akin Sr., 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29 in the Vienna First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Vienna City Cemetery.

Mr. Akin died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at his residence.

Born in Mitchellville, Tenn., he was the son of the late R.C. Akin and Oma Louise Shannon Akin. He was a member of the Vienna First Baptist Church, the Caleb Sunday School Class and was retired from Seaboard Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Mary K. Akin of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; sons, Shannon (Grace) Akin and Reuben (Faye) Akin of Vienna; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 351, Vienna, Ga., 31092.

Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna has charge of the arrangements.

Ola Mae Wright Posey

CORDELE - Funeral services for Ola Mae Posey of Cordele will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Service. iIntermentwill follow at Zion Hope cemetery in Crisp County.

Mrs. Posey, 87, died at Crisp Regional Hospital Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006. She was born Friday, June 13, 1919 in Turner County and was the daughter of the late Isaiah Jessie Wright and Edna Pauline Hathcock Wright. Mrs. Posey was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, David and Brenda Posey of Cordele and Benny and Dorothy Posey of Augusta; a brother, Albert Wright of Dakota; four sisters, Kathleen Wright Johnson of Cordele, Minnie W. Wright of Duluth, Rosie Lee Wright Moore of Augusta, and Lilly Wright Scoggins of Ashburn; four grandchildren, Eric Posey and his wife, Mandy of Cordele, Amy Simpkins and her husband, Leeland of McDonough, Shea Posey of Augusta, and Kyle Posey and his wife, Heidi of Chattanooga, TN and four great-grandchildren, Gregory Simpkins, Brittaney Simpkins, Krysten Simpkins and Hannah Williamson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie David Posey and a brother, Raburn Wright. The family may be contacted at the home of David and Brenda Posey at 307 Saddlecreek Drive, Cordele.

They will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight. Rainey Family Funeral Services has charge of arrangements.

Ola Mae Wright Posey

CORDELE - Funeral services for Ola Mae Posey were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Service.

Rev. Larry Wilbanks officiated, and Imogene Gilliam, pianist, played soft music. She accompanied Richard Bolin as he sang "People Need The Lord" and "It Is Well." The service was concluded with Billy White singing "Sweet Beulah Land." Pallbearers were C.R. Milam, Jimmy McBryant, Edward Scoggins, Dan Moore, Jeff Estep and Melvin Scoggins.

The committal service was in Zion Hope cemetery in Crisp County.

Marjorie H. Noble

Cordele — Funeral services were held for Marjorie H. "Me Marge" Noble at 11a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2006 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. The Rev. Warren Williams and Lee Guerry officiated the service.

Private committal services followed in the Sunnyside Cemetery.

Mrs. Noble, the widow of J. W. Noble, was born in Crisp County on Monday, Nov. 5, 1917. She died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Crisp Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Robert W. Hubbard and the late Emily Aileen James Hubbard. A member of Cordele First Baptist Church, she was a business woman, homemaker and devoted mother and grandmother.

Regina Bryant read a poem entitled "Some People Make A Difference" and offered a few personal remarks.

Eula Jo Sheffield, pianist, played before and after the service. As the family entered the chapel, "There's Something About That Name" was played. Mrs. Sheffield accompanied herself, Angie Ellis and Peggy Haralson as they sang "How Great Thou Art". She also accompanied Peggy Haralson as she sang "His Eye Is On The Sparrow."

Me Marge's grandchildren: Hal McCay, Richard Blythe and Amy Perry rolled her casket out of the chapel. They then joined Roy Noble, Jr., Dwaine Slade, Tracy Johnson and Johnny Noble as pallbearers. Other nieces and nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

She is survived by her daughters: Emily McQuaig and her husband Donnie of Blackshear, Beverly McCay Barr of Cordele; three grandchildren: Richard Blythe and his wife Beth of Blackshear, Hal McCay and his wife Keela and Amy Perry and her husband Craig all of Cordele; and five great-grandchildren: Ben and Walker Blythe both of Blackshear, Kristen Reed, Patrick McCay and Hali McCay all of Cordele.

Hughes & Wright Funeral Home is entrusted with these local arrangements.

Lula Mae Law

DOOLING — Funeral services for Lula Mae Law, 71, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 in the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dooling. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, and the Rev. Aaron Bandy will officiate for the services.

Mrs. Law died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

She was the daughter of the late Ed and Beulah Brown of Dooling, and was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served as past president of the Usher Board. She was the widow of the late Edward Law.

Survivors include four sons, the Rev. Tommie (Barbara) Law of Ellaville, the Rev. Joe (Pastor Deborah) Law and Octavious Law of Dooling, and Mack Law of Detroit, Mich.; two daughters, Bertha Morris and Jennice Law of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Eddie Mae McGhee of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Willie Brown of Dooling, and Willie B. (Ester) Curgil of Connecticut; two sisters-in-law; 32 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m., and the family may be contacted at 1162 Church St., Dooling.

Lovie S. Argroves
1917-2005
Spartanburg, SC

Lovie S. Argroves, age 87, 250 Hudson Barksdale Rd. passed away on Sunday January 2, 2005.

A native of Meriwether County, Mrs. Argroves was the daughter of the late William Allison and Cornelia Owen Spence. Her husband, William S. Argroves preceded her in death. She was a retired bookkeeper with the Leathers Company and was a member of the Watkinsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son W. A. Argroves of Hillsbrough, NC.; nieces Barbara Wingo, N. Augusta SC; Lynne Grayson, Monroe, Ga; Judy Brownlee, Pfafftown, NC and Cornelia Thornton, Telephone, TX; 4 great nieces and 4 great nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11Am Tuesday, January 4th, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 9:30 - 10:30 AM Tuesday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Road, Smyrna, Ga 30080.

Betty Pope Mayo Chavers

ALBANY — Graveside funeral services for Betty Pope Mayo Chavers, 76, formerly of Montezuma, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 at Pinecrest cemetery in Vidalia with Elder Joe Nettles officiating.

Mrs. Chavers died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006.

A native of Vidalia, she was the daughter of the late Herschel and Mamie Brantley Pope. He had resided in Montezuma for more than 40 years, but had recently moved to Albany. Mrs. Chavers was a retired bookkeeper for the West Central Georgia Community Action Council in Montezuma. She was a member of Plains Baptist Church, she was active in the Silver Stars and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include her husband, A. Clyde Chavers of Plains; two daughters, Charlane Mathews and her husband, Mike, and Jackie Theidel and her husband, Rick, all of Albany; a son, David C. Mayo and his wife, Dawn, of Cordele; four grandchildren, Tracy Mathews Ethridge and her husband, Allen, of Albany, Clarke Mayo and Catherine Mayo both of Cordele, and Chloe A. Theidel of Albany; two sisters, Sarah Pope Maddox of Lyons, and Helen Pope Kennington of Macon.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Albany Community Hospice, 2332 Lake Park Drive, Albany, Ga., 31707 or the American Cancer Society, 323 Pine Ave., Suite 1, Albany, Ga., 31701.

J.B. DuPree

ASHBURN — Graveside funeral services for J.B. DuPree, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 28 at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. The family may be contacted at 723 Grand St., Ashburn. Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn has charge of the arrangements.

Mr. DuPree died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, in Tift Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

James P. ‘Jim’ Miller

UNADILLA — A memorial service for James P. “Jim” Miller, 68, will be held at a later date. The family may be contacted at 549 Beacham Ave., Unadilla. Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Unadilla has charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Miller died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, in a local hospital.

James Martin Allen
1942-2005
Athens

James Martin Allen, 62, of Newton Bridge Road, died Thursday February 24, 2005.

A native of Clarke County, Mr. Allen was the son of Clora Owensby Allen of Athens and the late Roman Allen and worked in construction.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Sara Hendrix Allen; children, Pennie Allen of Lexington, GA, Jeff Allen of Gadsden, AL and Joey Allen of Athens; brothers, William Allen of Commerce, Mike Allen of Athens, and David Allen of Athens; sisters, Patricia Wilson of Ila, Mary Parr of Athens; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held 2 pm Sunday February 27 in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Conine officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Doug Parr, Bryan Hayes, Thomas Anderson, Bryan Minish, Andy Hayes, and Johnny Ray Gomez.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday February 26 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
