Mary Lay Osteen

Mary Lay Osteen, 83, recently of Athens, GA passed away Thursday, December 13, 2001. Born in Shiloh Florida, Mrs. Osteen lived most of her life in Cocoa, Fl.and Clayton GA.

Mrs Osteen Was a homemaker and a Medical Secretary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cocoa, Fl. and Baptist Church of Clayton, GA. In cocoa she was a member of the Eastern Star and the Junior Womens's Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Howard Osteen in 1977, her father Eugene Lay, and her mother Rena Lay. Her brother Buford "Bubs" Lay was killed in action in 1944 during World War II.

Mary leaves cherished memories to her son William D. Osteen of Stuart, Fl. her daughter Betty Parker of Athens, GA. and her sister Christine Weinberg of Athens and formerly of Cocoa, Fl. She also leaves six grandchildren: Don Osteen Jr. of Palm City Fl., Scott Osteen of Jupiter, Fl., Shannon Grimes of Jensen Beach, Fl., John Parker of Athens GA., Chris Parker of Atlanta, GA., and Sam Parker of Boone, NC. And six great-grandchildren.

Beck Funeral Home in Clayton, GA. is in Charge of the arrangements. The funeral will be Saturday, December 15, 2001, at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Donations may be made to the Clayton Baptist church 87 Church Street, Clayton GA 30525 or Vista Care Foundation, 767 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens GA 30606.

Josephine Rickman Brown

Josephine Rickman Brown age 83, of Clayton died March 14, 2003 at her home. She was the loving wife of Carroll Mack Brown.

Born on Febuary 22, 1920 in Rabun County she was the daughter of Luther Franklin Rickman and Stella Nicholson Rickman. She graduated from Rabun County High School, Asheville Teachers College, and received a master degree from Western Carolina College. She retired in 1983 with 38 years of experience most of which were in the Rabun County system. She considered living among her former students a great joy.

She was member of Clayton Baptist Church, Joy Sunday school class, and the Edith B. Burney Woman’s Missionary Union. She has been a Sunday school teacher, secretary of Rabun County Memorial Hospital authority, a volunteer pink lady at Ridgecrest Medical Center, and president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 220. She was also a member of the National Educators Association, Georgia Association of Educators, Rabun County Association of Educators, and the Rabun County Historical Society.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law Joe and Joan Brown of Cleveland, a daughter Melva Brown of the home, a grandson and granddaughter in law Jacob and Crystal Brown of Cleveland and grandson Justin Brown of Cleveland. Her siblings Mrs. Ethel R. Page of Wolffolk, Mrs. Evelyn R. Baran of Alexandria, Virginia and J. Frank Rickman of Clayton, several nieces, nephews, and cousins

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Saturday March 15, 2003, 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM

Funeral services will be held Clayton Baptist Church at 3:00 PM Sunday March 16, 2003 with Rev Mike Campbell officiating. Burial was in the Pickett Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Clayton Baptist Church, 87 South Church Street, Clayton, GA. 30535. Rabun County Historical Society, or the Frank Snyder Scholarship Fund at Rabun County High School, 230 Wildcat Dr., Clayton, GA. 30525

Morris Homer Worley "Micky"

Morris Homer Worley affectionately known as Micky age 61. passed away March 29, 2003 at his home.

Born on May 11, 1941 in Hayesville North Carolina the son of the late Garland Andrew and Effie May Swanson Worley. He was raised in the Baptist faith, and work for the telephone company for forty plus years.

He is survived by his wife Dianna Nichols Worley of the home, one son Matthew Arron Worley of Clayton; Two Daughters Julie Worley Mullen of Clayton, Cheryl Crawford of Alpharetta Georgia; Six brothers Harrold Worley of Hayesville, George Worley of Murphy, Kirt Worley of Hayesville, Eddie Worley of Hayesville, Charles Worley of Hayesville, Howard Worley of Hayesville; Two sisters Frances Worley Matherson of Clover SC, Mary Worley McCtaggert of Hayesville; Five Grand-children; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by a Brother Billy Worley.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Monday March 31, 2003 at Chatuge Assembly of God with Rev. Aline Mosteller officiating.

The Family request that flowers be omitted and donation be made to the American Cancer Society at 2200 Lake Blvd, N.E. Atlanta, GA 30319 or Good Shepherd Hospice and Home Health Care at P.O. Box 465 Hayesville, NC 28904 In Memory of Mr. Worley.

Dr. John Ed Fowler

John Edward Fowler, 70, of Clayton, died March 28, 2003 at Rabun County Memorial Hospital (RCMH).

Born July 6, 1932 in Elbert Co., GA, he was the son of Jessie Mae Thompson Fowler and the late Elma Lee Fowler. He was a family physician, serving the Rabun County community for 40 years, and also the medical profession in the state of Georgia.

He was a former President of both the Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP), and was currently serving on the Georgia Board for Physicians Work Force. He had been Chief of Staff at RCMH, and was currently the Chairman of the RCMH Hospital Authority. He contributed significant time and energy to many volunteer health causes in the community, including programs at the Rabun County Health Department, an informational show on the local radio station, and as the physician for the Rabun County High School football team. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and was a County Commissioner for six years. He was a member of the Clayton First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a past Chair of the Administrative Board. He was also a member of the Walnut Flats Hunt Club, and the Rotary Club, for which he was a former President. In addition to his biological sons, he was father to four foreign exchange students. He enjoyed being with his family, working on his garden and home, traveling, and driving all sorts of fast vehicles. He was firm in his convictions, and never afraid to tell it like he saw it. But he enjoyed laughing at himself when his convictions occasionally got him into trouble. He also liked being the center of attention, and he was good at it.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Jannette Denby.

Survivors include his mother of Tifton, GA; his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Burton Fowler of Clayton; sons and daughters-in-law, John Edward Fowler, Jr. and Margit Foss of Corvallis, OR and Joseph Evan Fowler and Mamen Moraleda of Denver, CO; three sisters, Ann Williams of Harbor Springs, MI, Annette Sumner of Tifton, GA and Marie Cottle of Clayton; and one grandson, Henry John Foss Fowler.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Beck Funeral Home at 5 PM on Monday, March 31, with the Rev. Hal Brady of Columbus, GA officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church of Clayton, GA 30525 or to The GAFP Endowment Chair at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta GA 30906.

Karen York DuBois

Karen Anita York DuBois age 55 of Clayton Ga passed away April 1, 2003, at home.

She was born in Rabun County on August 30, 1947 the daughter of James Carlton York and Mary Jo May York. She was a member of First United Methodist Church Of Clayton. She attended Weber College in Florida and received her Associates Degree in Business Education, Brenau College and received her B.S. Degree, North Georgia College and received her Masters Degree, Lincoln Memorial College and received her Six Year specialty degree in Administration Leadership. Mrs. DuBois was a teacher at Rabun County High School, were she was instrumental in the starting of the DECA Club and revived the Community Based Education Program. She was the adviser for FBLA and the Instructor for Business Communications.

She is survived by her Parents James and Mary Jo May York of Clayton Ga, One Son James DuBois of Greensboro Nc.; Two Sister Gail York of Atlanta Ga., Janice York of Beaufort Sc. Three Grandchildren Libby DuBois, Lyndsay DuBois, James DuBois Jr.

The Family will receive friends Thursday April 3, 2003 at Beck Funeral Home from 6:00 Pm Until 8:00 Pm.

Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Clayton at 1:00 Pm Friday April 4, 2003, With Rev. Warren Huddleston officiating.

In lieu of flowers Memorial Donation May be made to Clayton United Methodist Church Family life center Fund C/O P.O. Box 703 Clayton, GA 30525 or Karen DuBois Scholarship Fund C/O Rabun County High school 230 Wildcat Hill Dr. Tiger GA 30576.

Hubert Samuel Darnell

Hubert Samuel Darnell, age 51 of Wolffork Valley passed away April 29, 2002.

Hubert Darnell was born Jan 9, 1952, and was lifetime resident of Rabun County.

He is survived by his wife Sue Darnell of Rabun Gap GA. and one daughter Crystal Darnell of Rabun Gap, GA.

Mr. Darnell’s wishes were to be cremated.

The family will received friends at Beck Funeral Home Saturday May 3, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Memorial service will follow the visitation in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel at 7:30 PM Saturday May 3, 2003.

"Fifi" Sara Theresa Short McCraw

Sara Theresa Short McCraw affectionately known as Fifi, age 58 of Clayton passed away after an extended illness.

Fifi was born December 12, 1944 in Rabun County the daughter of the late Perry Webb Short and Nan Lee Hamby Short.

She worked for the city of Clayton for twenty three years and was the utility bill clerk. She was a member of Wolfcreek Baptist Church in Lakemont, Woodman of the World and was a proud member of alcoholics anonymous for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a beloved daughter Perri Lee McCraw Carver who passed away April 21, 1996.

She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law Robert Lee Alen Jr (Bob) and Holly Hollifield McCraw of Clayton, two brothers Charles Robert Short of Blairesville Ga, Jack Suddeth Short of Clayton, three sisters Nancy Margaret Short Jones of Clayton, Kay Ruth Short Norton of Alpharetta, Melissa Jane Short Beck of Clayton, Four Grandchildren James Robert Carver (Jim-Bob), Makinzy Lee McCraw, Maleigha Perri Breanna McCraw, William Mathew McCraw all of Clayton, she is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

The Family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 Pm until 9:00 Pm at Beck Funeral Home.

There will be a memorial service held 11:00 AM Monday April 28, 2003 at Battle Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Carver her favorite son-in-law, and Madison McCrackin officiating. It was her wishes to be cremated.

The family asks that flowers be omitted and donations can be made to Wolfcreek Baptist Church P.O. Box 306 Wiley GA, 30581 or Battle Branch Baptist Church P.O. Box 483 Clayton GA, 30525 in Memory of Fifi McCraw.

Icie Belle Page Rickman

Icie Belle Page Rickman, Age 84 of Rabun Gap passed away April 5, 2003 at her residence after an extended illness.

She was the widow of the late Jesse Newland Rickman. Mrs. Rickman was born June 10, 1918 in Habersham County the daughter of the late Henry Miles Page and Fannie Susan Turpin Page. She was a life long resident of Rabun County. She was a member of Dillard United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years and also served on the Administrative Council, Evangelist Committee, cemetery Committee, and Church Hostess Committee. She always loved children and was involved with children’s Bible School, and children’s programs. She was employed at Burlington Industries as a machine operator for 26 years.

She is survived by eight daughters, Joann Dickerson of Rabun Gap GA, Mary Story of Clayton GA, Sue Jachode of Sabastian FL, Ruth Dunn of Milledgeville GA, Linda Dinkins of Rabun Gap GA, Nancy Burrell of Cornelia GA, Elizabeth Dixon of Tiger GA, Brenda Cook of Athens GA; two Sons Joe Rickman of Danielsville GA, Claude Rickman of Rabun Gap; four sisters Margie Bleckley of Mountain City GA, Myrtle Speed of Clayton GA, Annie Wilbanks of Mountain Rest SC, Faye Marsengill of Clayton GA; Three Brothers Hubert Page, Ray Page, and Cliff Page all of Clayton GA. 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children Jesse Rickman Jr. and an infant child. One sister Jennie Fugate and two brothers Norman Page, Jess Page.

The family will receive friends Sunday April 6, 2003 at Beck Funeral Home from 6:00 Pm until 8:00 Pm.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 Pm Monday April 7, 2003 at the Dillard United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Volk and Rev. James Turpen officiating. Mrs. Rickman will lie in state for an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Dillard United Methodist Church, or The Rabun County Library.

The family will be at the home of Mary Story in Clayton.

Shane Caldwell

Shane Caldwell age 24 of Clayton passed away June 20, 2003 at Emory University Hospital.

Shane was born in Macon County North Carolina on March 07, 1979 the son of the Late Roger Dale Caldwell and Brenda Kay Laws Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife Jennifer Gibson Caldwell of the home; Mother Brenda Caldwell; three brothers Bruce Lee Caldwell of Clayton, Richard Allen Laws of Tenn., Michael Dale Caldwell of NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday Night June 22, 2003 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Beck Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at Beck Funeral Home Chapel Monday June 23, 2003 at 2:00 Pm with Rev. J.C. Quilliams officiating.

The body will be cremated following the funeral service.

Linda Holcomb

Linda Lucille Holcomb, age 51 of Clayton passed away June 17, 2003 at her residence after an extended illness.

Linda was born in Rabun County on May 26, 1952 the daughter of Ruth Holcomb and the late Arvil Holcomb. She was a life long resident of Rabun County.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother Calvin Holcomb.

She is survived by her mother, one Daughter Rena Lawrence of Clayton, one brother Dale Holcomb of Clayton. A number of niece’s nephews and cousins also survive.

The family will receive friend Wednesday June 18, 2003 at Beck Funeral home from 7:00 Pm until 9:00 Pm.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday June 19, 2003 at Beck funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Cannon officiating, burial will follow in the Germany Mountain Cemetery.
