Sandra Lou Welch Walker

Sandra Lou Welch Walker, age 53, of Rabun Gap passed away Tuesday evening October 19, 2004 at Rabun County Memorial Hospital.

Sandra was preceded in death by her mother Thelma Holbrooks Welch and her father, Lon J. Welch of Mountain City, GA.

She is survived by her husband Carlton B. Walker of the home, one son, Avery Walker of Rabun Gap; one daughter, Devona “Dee” Walker Craft of Mountain City, GA; two brothers, Bruce Welch of Mountain City, GA, Steve Welch of Toccoa, GA; one sister, Vonnie W. Gay of Clayton, GA and three grandsons, Logan Finley, Carter Craft and Loren Craft.

She was born in Stephens County, GA, and was a seamstress working in the textile industry and also worked with Home Health Care for 7 years. She was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church and a member of its Ladies Prayer Group.

The family will receive friends at the Beck Funeral Home on Thursday October 21, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Friday October 22, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Blue Heights Baptist Church with the Reverends David Brown officiating. She will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Taylor’s Chapel cemetery in Mountain City, GA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Laura Brooke Henson

Laura Brooke Henson, 17, of Rabun Gap, GA, passed away Saturday December 11, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Elmas and Elsie Henson, and Richard English.

Laura is survived by her loving parents, Steve W. Henson and Diane E. Henson of the home, one brother Lansing (Lance) Calvin Henson of the home; and her grandmother Lena English of Clayton. Also surviving are her Aunts and Uncles, Charles and Cathy Henson, Ronnie and Linda Dailey, Pat and Karen McCall, Mary Speed, Ricky Speed, David and Deborah Dowdle, Marty and JoAnn Talley, and Kelly and Theresa Grizzle. A number of cousins also survive.

Laura was a lifetime resident of Rabun Gap, a member of Betty’s Creek Baptist Church and a student at Rabun County High School. She was a member of D.E.C.A., FBLA, and the 4-H.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home on Sunday December 12, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Betty’s Creek Baptist Church on Monday December 13, 2004 at 2:00 PM with the Reverends Ronia Hunter and Dale Welsh officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the Betty’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

K "Don" Throckmorton

K. “Don” Throckmorton, 72, of Tiger, GA, passed away at his home on Sunday December 12, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albert Throckmorton and Anna Mae Verity Throckmorton. He is survived by 3 daughters, Deborah Schirmacher of Princeton, MN; Diane Kuecken of Tiger, GA; and Dara Pempsell of St. Petersburg, FL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

Don was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Army and was a Fleet Technician in the telecom industry and retired from Verizon. He was a member of the Central Bible Church and attended Tiger Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Monday December 13, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and from 10 AM to 11 AM on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 14, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Tiger Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Hunnicutt officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Community cemetery in Tiger, GA.

Donations may be made to the Tiger Baptist Church in Don’s memory.

Luella Mozelle Dover

Luella Mozelle Dover, age 73, of Clayton, GA passed away Wednesday evening October 20, 2004 at North East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.

She was born in Towns County GA and was the daughter of the late Robert Lon Dover and Lula Eller Dover. She was also preceded in death by Grady Dover and Vaughn Dover. She is survived by four brothers, Jay G. Dover of Clayton, GA; Paul Dover of Walhalla, SC; Dan Dover of Atlanta, GA; and John Dover of Pacolet, SC.

Luella was a long time employee at the Clayton City Hall as City Clerk, and was a charter member and a very active member of the Mountain City Church of God.

The family will receive friends at the Beck Funeral Home Friday evening October 22, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday October 23, 2004 at the Mountain City Church of God Rev. Wren Worley will officiate

Burial will follow at the Rabun Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mountain City Church of God in memory of Luella Dover.

Mildred Williams Collier

Mildred Williams Collier, age 80 of Clayton GA passed away October 24, 2004.

Mrs. Collier was born in Dillard Georgia August 22, 1924 the daughter of the late Raleigh Williams and the late Mary Lassie Daily Williams.

Mildred was preceded in death by Her Husband, Noah C. Collier, a son Noah Chandler Collier Jr. know to all as Chan, two sisters, Ruby Hamby, Margaret Allen, one brother James Edward Williams.

She survived by one sister Ruth Barnes of Clayton GA, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Monday Evening October 25, 2004 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 Am Tuesday October 26, 2004 in the Chapel Of Beck Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Campbell Officiating. Burial will follow in the Head of Tennessee Cemetery.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Clayton Baptist Church Building fund 85 North Church Street Clayton GA 30525 in Memory of Mrs. Collier.

George Conan English

George Conan English, 62, of Cumming, Georgia, died on October 31, 2004. He was born January 20, 1942 in Clayton, Georgia the first son of Maybelle and Porter English. George attended Rabun County High School and Falls College of Drafting in Atlanta, Georgia and was a project manager for Disaster Services Incorporated, in Atlanta and a member of Timpson Creek Presbyterian Church. He may be best remembered as lead singer and guitar player in The Blue Ridge Gentlemen bluegrass band.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Porter English and is survived by his mother, Maybelle C. English, his wife, Jett K. English, son and spouse Marion and Tiffany English of Buford, Georgia, daughter Gaye England of Lawrenceville, Georgia, son and spouse Monty and Kim English of Auburn, Georgia, grand-daughter Krystal England of Lawrenceville, Georgia, brother and wife Jerry and Sue English of Clayton, Georgia, brother and wife Glenn and Madge English of Mountain City, Georgia, step-daughter and son-in-law Autumn and Matt Bickerstaff of Murrayville, Georgia, step-grand-children Ceatin and Isis Bickerstaff, and mother-in-law Margaret S. King of Cumming, Georgia.

The family will receive friends and family at Beck Funeral Home in Clayton, Georgia on Tuesday evening November 2, 2004, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Services will be held at the Beck Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 11:00 am with Dr. Joe Nichols officiating. Burial will be at the Persimmon Community Cemetery.

Leila Mae Eller (Bird) Littrell

Leila Mae Eller Littrell, (Bird) 61, of Clayton, GA, passed away at her home on Friday December 3, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her father Herbie Lee Eller and is survived by her mother Essie Mae Hooper Eller. She is also survived by her loving husband Tony Haze Littrell, Sr; three sons, James Holbrook, Tony Haze Littrell, Jr. and George Jason Littrell, all of Clayton, GA; one daughter, Elain Greer of Clayton; four brothers, Edward Eller of California, Cresley Pollard of Clayton, Lathen Lee of Clayton, and David Lee also of Clayton. She is also survived by two sisters, Anita Armstrong of California and Deloris Crane of Clayton, GA; and three grandchildren.

Leila was a member of the Persimmon Church of God, and a very proud member of the Georgia Tribe of the Eastern Cherokee.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home on Saturday December 4, 2004 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday December 5, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Reverend J.C. Quilliams and Reverend Gary Greer officiating.

Larry Varnadoe McLeod
1932-2004
Larry Varnadoe McLeod, 72, of 382 Woodward Way, passed away Tuesday, December 6, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Ellaville, Schley County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Lamartine Varnadoe McLeod and Christine Stewart McLeod. He graduated with honors from Gordon Military College and the University of Georgia, earning his Juris Doctor degree from UGA School of Law in 1954. For the next 48 years he practiced law in Athens, the vast majority of that time as a partner with the firm of Erwin, Epting, Gibson & McLeod, and managing partner of the firm of McLeod, Benton, Begnaud & Marshall, L.L.P., serving, among others, commercial, financial and health care institutions. His accomplishments in the field of law are both numerous and notable. He was a nationally known lecturer and author of numerous papers, articles and monographs on a variety of legal subjects, including Aspen’s Hospital Contracts Manual and of the Georgia Hospital Law Manual. In the health care field he was the 1983-84 President of the American Academy of Hospital Attorneys, an organization composed of more than 2600 attorney-members from all 50 states and served as a member of its Advisory Committee to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. He was instrumental in founding and served as the first President of the Georgia Society of Hospital Attorneys. He also served for over 30 years as general counsel and a member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Hospital.

In the commercial and financial fields he is a former Adjunct Professor teaching corporations, estate planning, and other courses at the University of Georgia School of Law, a member of the faculty of the Georgia Banking School from its inception, and has served as Chairman of the Fiduciary Law Section, the Uniform Commercial Laws and Banking Law Committees and the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Georgia. He also served on the Advisory Committee on State Banking Laws, Advisory Committee on Revision of Article 9 of the UCC, Fiduciary Law Study Committee, State Probate Code Revision Committee, State Guardianship Code Revision Committee, Subcommittee on Professionalism in Law Schools, Board of Trustees of ICLE, and was Past President of the Western Circuit Bar Association. In 1973 he was elected a Fellow in the American College of Probate Counsel. During his career Mr. McLeod was selected for inclusion in such publications as Who’s Who in The South, the consumer’s guide to The Best Lawyer’s in America, and the First Edition of Who’s Who in American Law.

In local affairs Mr. McLeod previously served as Judge Magistrate for the Court of Clarke County. He is a former Athens Young Man of the Year, recipient of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award, past president of the Athens Lions Club, the Athens Toastmasters Club, was twice president of Athens Little League, and a Shriner. He has served as a member, officer, and director of many other civic, charitable and business organizations in the Athens area. Recently, he devoted much of his time and effort reading a variety of texts for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.

He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for 50 years, where he served three terms on the Vestry, was a founding member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, served for many years as the Youth Director for EYC, and as a lay reader and usher.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Joye, daughter Crystine McLeod Odom of Bogart, Ga., and son Joseph Bryan McLeod of Raleigh, N.C. Son in law Thomas Mitchell Odom, Jr. and daughter in law Lynn Donaldson McLeod. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Thomas Mitchell Odom III, Alexander McLeod Odom, Barbara Ann McLeod, and Joseph Reading Mcleod. He is also survived by his brother, Lamartine Stewart McLeod and sister in law Sue, of Chattanooga, TN, one niece and two nephews, and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held 2pm Friday, December 10, 2004 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Prince Avenue with Rev. Peter Courtney and Rev. Mandy Brady officiating. The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm at Bernstein Funeral Home on Thursday, December 9. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Hospice House, 1230 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606.

Alfred Price Smith

Alfred Price Smith, 82, of Clayton, GA passed away Sunday December 5, 2004 at Stephens County Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Trusty Smith, his parents Virgil Carroll Smith and Bertha Josephine McWhorter Smith; a brother Milton Smith, and two sisters, Rena Smith Dion and Mae McCrackin.

He is survived by two brothers, Edward Smith of Clayton and Claude Smith of Laurens, SC; a sister Ruby Smith of Clayton, 3 nephews, Tom McCrackin, Carroll McCrackin, and David Smith; 2 nieces, Sharon McCauley, and Rebecca McCall; and 2 great nieces, Tonya Ramey, and Torri Beck.

Alfred was a life long resident of Rabun County, a U.S. Army veteran having served with the 32nd Infantry Division during World War II, and he was a member of the D.A.V.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home on Monday December 6, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on Tuesday December 7, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Ronia Hunter and Reverend Larry Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Donations may be made to The D.A.V. Chapter 15, P.O. Box 564, Tiger, GA 30576 or to the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 14, Tiger, GA 30576.

The family will be at the residence on Seed Tick Road.

David Bailey

David Bailey, 79, of Clayton passed away Sunday December 5, 2004 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph O. Bailey and Corinne Ringel Bailey, and his wife Victoria Crisp Bailey.

He is survived by three step-daughters, Harriet Goodpaster, St Paul, MN; Martha Smith, Whitter, CA; and Barbara Hutchings, Devon, England. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Beth Goodpaster and Tracy Bush; a grandson, Rutledge; and one nephew, Charles (Chuck) and Jackie Crisp, Clayton, GA.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday December 10, 2004 at 10:30 AM at the Clayton United Methodist Church with Reverend Warren Huddleston officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Clayton United Methodist Church
