Lovick H. Stikeleather
Lovick Haldon Stikeleather, 68, of Dillard, GA, passed away on March 31, 2006 at Memorial Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville, NC, after suffering a severe heart attack on March 16. He went peacefully with his beloved wife of 44 years, Sonja Coker Stikeleather, by his side. One of 5 children, he was born August 24, 1937 in Arcadia, FL where he lived and worked for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad and the Florida Highway Patrol, before moving to Valdosta, GA, where he resided for 20 years, owning and operating a furniture restoration and antiques business, and in 1994 retired to the serenity of the North Georgia mountains.
He was a man of simple means, but he was by no means a simple man. He was a self-taught, self-sufficient, rugged individualist with an unassuming manner who took great pride in a job well done. As a master carpenter and fine-woodworker, the beauty of his craftsmanship embodied the strong, enduring character and the integrity of spirit that dwelt within the man we called husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was thrifty, resourceful and wise and was the kind of neighbor who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He wrote poetry and hymns that expressed his deep faith. He loved romping in the yard with his dogs Elvis and Heinneken. He loved to sit on the porch with his pipe and observe the hummingbird feeder. He loved a good joke and a good cup of coffee. To him the little things meant a lot. The little things weren’t only enough, they were just right.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Sonja Stikeleather, his five children, Carrie, Shane, Laurel, Debra, and Haldon; and his grandchildren Justin, Jared, Rachel, Cheyenne and Julia. He is preceded in death by his sister Angilee Foley and is survived by his brother Lee Stikeleather and his sisters Jean Podeswa and Louise Priest, as well as lots of nieces and nephews and other kin too many to name.
Funeral services were held on April 2, 2006 at the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church in Dillard, GA. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in Lovick’s name to The Rathbun Center, a hospital hospitality house that is run on a volunteer basis for the families of critical care patients. The address is The Rathbun Center, 121 Sherwood Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
