Wendell E. Funkhouser
Wendell Edward Funkhouser, 81, of Lost City, WV, died on Monday, May 28, 2007 in Clayton, GA. He was born on October 28, 1925. Wendell was a member of the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene.
Wartime and Army service interrupted Wendell’s senior years of high school and college. After service in the Pacific Theater of World War II, he was graduated from Mathias 12-Year School in 1947. He was graduated from West Virginia University (Forestry) in 1953 after completing service in the Korean War. Wendell achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1951. A fitting tribute to Wendell’s love of country is that his last day on earth was Memorial Day.
He worked throughout the southeastern US as a surveyor and forester for the Continental Can Company, Inc. Wendell was a valuable employee, having honed his skills as a woodsman in the mountains of West Virginia. The communities where he worked found that Wendell could be counted on to help fight forest fires and search the woods for lost children. After work one day he and a colleague rescued a boy who had been lost in the woods for a number of days. He retired from Continental Can as a District Manager in Savannah, GA in 1985.
Wendell pursued his love of the outdoors on the waterways of the Georgia coastline. He passed a rigorous navigational examination on his first try to become a member of the Power Squadron of Savannah, GA.
Wendell returned to live in Lost City, WV in 1989, where he spent many hours preserving the area’s heritage. In the 1990’s he collaborated with his high school teacher, Ms. Virginia Strawderman, to write and publish A History of Lost City, WV. This work may become his most enduring legacy to the region that he loved so much.
A tribute to his indomitable spirit is that Wendell was partially disabled. In 1964 he contracted a rare disease that would limit the use of his hands for the rest of his life. He slowed down only a bit to invent ingenious techniques and devices to help him continue to perform wood making and mechanical tasks.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen See Funkhouser; four sons, Lindy Funkhouser (Jessica) of Phoenix, AZ, Gregory W. Funkhouser (Cathee), of Clayton, GA, Kim M. Funkhouser, of Savannah, GA, and Mark E. Funkhouser (Sarah), of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Scott, Eric Funkhouser, Daniel Funkhouser, Joshua Funkhouser, Megan Funkhouser, Joanne Funkhouser, and Luke Funkhouser.
Reverend Jim Harrison, Pastor Roger Dove, and Reverend Doug Sterrett will preside over the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, 1871 Boyers Road, in Harrisonburg, VA. iIntermentwill follow at 1:30 p.m. Laurel Hill cemetery at the Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church in Lost City, WV.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Kyger Funeral Home at 903 S. Main St. in Harrisonburg, VA.
