Lauryn Nicole Ramey

Lauryn Nicole Ramey, 18, of Tiger, GA, passed away due to a tragic vehicular accident on Tuesday evening, November 10, 2009.

She was born in Stephens County, GA and was the daughter of James Todd Ramey and Cathy Yvonne Thompson Ramey.

Lauryn was preceded in death by her father, and paternal great-grandfather, Doc Ramey, Maternal Great-Grandparents, Harold Thompson Sr., Tessie Thompson and George Crunkleton; Maternal Grandmother, Martha Thompson and Paternal Grandfather, Russell Ramey.

She is survived by her mother, two brothers, Jackie Lee Buchanan Jr. and Isaac Burch Ramey, both of Tiger, GA; Maternal Grandfather, Harold Thompson, Jr. of Tiger, GA; Paternal Grandmother, Burma Sue Ramey of Clayton, GA; Maternal Great-Grandmother, Vernice Elliott Crunkleton Lovell, of Tiger, GA; Paternal Great-Grandmother, Willie Ramey of Clayton, GA.

Lauryn was a 2009 graduate of Rabun County High School, a member of Future Farmers of America, and was active in the Rabun Aid Program. She enjoyed her friends, loved to travel, the beach, and the Special Olympics, Coon hunting, camping, river rafting, and was very adventurous. She travelled to England and always wanted to try sky-diving.

The family will receive friends at beck Funeral Home on Friday evening, November 13, 2009 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Funeral Services will be held at Liberty Baptist Church on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2 PM with Rev. Alton Dendy and Jeremy Nofsinger officiating. Burial will follow in Wiley Cemetery.

Myrtle (Craig) Shirley Caudell "Nanny"

Myrtle (Craig) Shirley Caudell “Nanny”, 86, of Tiger, GA passed away at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Rabun County and was the daughter of the late Virgil C. and Cleo Holcomb Craig.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Caudell was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Curtis Shirley and her second husband, Marcus H. Caudell; a daughter, Mary Shirley Wilmot, siblings, Gladys Craig, L.E. Craig, Jesse Craig, Wilford Craig, Iva Craig Chilton, and Evelyn Craig Alley.

She is survived by a son, Sam Caudell and wife, Anne, five daughters, Betty Shirley Davis and husband, Allen, Jean Shirley Godby Keener and husband, Harley, Rena Caudell Blackwell and husband, Dan, Beverly Caudell Miller and husband, Lex, and Marie Caudell Watts and husband, James; her siblings, James Craig, Nora Craig Bingham, Leo Craig Smiley, Buck Craig, George Craig, Jack Craig, Ruth Craig Parker, 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. And many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Caudell was a homemaker and the oldest member of Lakemont Baptist Church. She helped start the The Rabun County Head Start Program. Her life was her family and she was affectionately known as the Matriarch of the family. She was well known for her wonderful sense of humor.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1 PM to 3 PM. Funeral services will be conducted after visitation in the chapel with Rev. Jewell Gaines officiating. Burial will follow in Rabun Memory Park.

The family is at the home of Mrs. Caudell in Tiger.

Albert Alexander Peters

Albert Alexander Peters born January 15, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois, promoted November 21, 2009 Clayton, Georgia.

Al worked in father’s butcher shop until the end of the great depression when they lost all their properties.

He had straight A’s all through school. He played basketball on the team that would eventually play against the Harlem globetrotters in their early years. He joined the navy before WWII and served in South Pacific where he was a mechanic on many of the sea planes and larger panes. He had a very successful career of 30 years at Champion Spark plugs where his key accounts including Chrysler, Sears, John Deer, and all the airlines. He received Christ as His Savior under the preaching of HA Ironside at Moody Memorial Church in Chicago. He moved to Rabun County in 1999 with his wife Hannah who he faithfully took care of until her death with Alzheimer’s in 2002. At a robust age of almost 95 he still lived independently, was driving, worked out 5 days a week at Mountain Physical Therapy, and was planting flowers 2 weeks before his death.

He is survived by 2 sons Gary and Greg Peters and their spouses, 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, PO Box 848, Clayton, GA 30525.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM on Friday November 2 7th, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 6467 Highway 441 S, Wiley, GA.

Florence Aaron
1932-2004
Athens, GA

Florence Lee Loggins Aaron, 72. died Friday, October 22, 2004.

A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Aaron was a daughter of the late Calvin Kytle and Maggie Louise Jones Loggins. She was employed with Thomas Textile for 18 years and retired from Reliance Electric after 25 years. She was a member and kindergarten Sunday School teacher at New Covenant Worship Center.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Jake B. Aaron; brother, W.C. Loggins of Comer; sisters: Olivia Randolph of Athens and Mamie Lou Watkins of Gainesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard F. Conine and the Rev. Michael Giddeons officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will be at the residence of Olivia Randolph and receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the New Covenant Worship Center, 1425 Newton Bridge Road, Athens, GA 30607 or to Vista Care Foundation, 767 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

Howard W. Thompson

Howard Willis Thompson, 89, of Clayton, Georgia entered into eternal rest at his residence on Sunday, November 22, 2009 after an extended illness.

He was born in Rabun County and was the son of the late Emory Lee and Eva Lunsford Thompson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Dennis Thompson, Furman “Joe” Thompson, Jewish “Juke” Thompson; and three sisters, Gerthie Shook, Clara Belle Thompson and Heddie Thompson.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Rachel Arlene Thompson, four sons, Jimmy Thompson and wife Daisy of Clayton, Ray Thompson and wife Cheryl of Mount Airy, Ronald Thompson and wife Bonnie of Clayton, and Sanford Thompson and wife Susan of Clayton; two daughters, Shirley Nichols and husband Grady of Clayton, Mary Williams and husband Bob of Clayton; and a brother, Boyd Thompson of Winder, GA. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-step-grandchildren.

Howard was a member of Persimmon Baptist Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman. At the age of 16 he worked for the WPA then in the CCC Camps in the Smokies, then to the TVA at Fontana Dam. During WWII he worked in the GM truck plants making military war equipment. He was later a logger, farmer, and builder.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home on Monday, November 23, 2009 from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel in Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 1 PM with Rev. Richard Wright and Rev. Raymond Page officiating. Burial will follow in Blalock cemetery in Clayton, GA.

Memorial donations may be made to Persimmon Baptist Church, 2221 Persimmon Road, Clayton, GA 30525 in memory of Howard Thompson.

John Michel Grantham

John Michel Grantham, 34, formerly of Clayton passed away June 19, 2010.

John was born in Opelika, Alabama to Joe and Kathi Klages Grantham in 1976. He was a member of Clayton Baptist Church in Clayton Georgia. John Graduated from Rabun County High School in the class of 1994. He then attended Georgia Institute of Technology were he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Internal Affairs. While at Georgia Tech he was a six time member of the Dean’s List. He was voted to ACC All-Academic Team in 1998, earned Certificate in Health and Performance Science while attending Georgia Tech. He maintained a 3.4 grade point average in his major at Georgia Tech. John also was a certified strength and conditioning specialist under the United States Weight Lifting Association. He was an instructor for Criminal Justice at Lanier Tech, and a Martial Arts Instructor at Full Throttle Fitness in Gainesville Georgia.

John was a five year member of the Georgia Tech Football Team. He was a walk-on team member in 1994 and earned a full scholarship in 1996, and started on the 1998 ACC championship team. He won the United States Amateur Kickboxing heavyweight championship in 2002. John was also the southeast heavy weight champion in 2001. He held a black belt in Japanese Ju-Jitsu, purple belt in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, over fifteen years experience teaching, training, and competing in Muay Thai. Trainer of numerous champion submission grapplers, kickboxers, and mixed martial artists.

John was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Robert Klages.

John is survived by his parents, Joe and Kathi Grantham of Covington, Georgia formerly of Tiger, Georgia; one son Jake Alexander Grantham and Jakes mother, Kim Berry of Gainesville, Georgia; one sister Kelli Grantham Owens, and brother-in-law Chad Owens of Chattanooga Tennessee; one brother Jeff Grantham and sister-in-law Ginnie Boyd Grantham; Paternal Grandparents Howard and sue Grantham of Ashford, Alabama; Maternal grandmother Marguerite Klages of Franklin North Carolina; niece Katelyn Owens; Nephew Grant Owens.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Thursday June 24, 2010 from 6 until 9 PM.

Funeral Services will be held Friday June 25, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Clayton Baptist Church MAC Building with Rev. Jason Dees and David Rogers Officiating. The Family will have a private Burial.

Kasi Jackson Webb

Kasi Jackson Webb, 36, a life long resident of Clayton, passed away on Sunday May 23, 2010.

She was born on February 21, 1974 in Toccoa Georgia to Wanda York Jackson Hutchison and the late Sherrell D. Jackson. She graduated from Rabun County High School in 1992 and then went on to attend Gainesville College and Lanier Tech where she earned a degree in Dental Hygiene in 1996.

She married Travis Kyle Webb in 1996 and has been happily married ever since. Kasi was a beloved wife, daughter, mother, friend and will be remembered for her many kindnesses to others. Kasi gave birth to three fine children: Natalie Morgan, Jackson Frederick and Delaney Elizabeth Webb who were the light of her life. She was also an active member of the Clayton Baptist Church.

The Family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Wednesday May 26, 2010 from 6 until 9 PM.

A celebration of her life funeral service will be held at Clayton Baptist Church MAC Building Thursday may 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joey Thompson and David Rogers Officiating. Burial will follow in the Harvey cemetery in Tallulah Falls Georgia.

Charles Stubbs

Charlie Stubbs was born on February 26th, 1919 and passed away May 31st, 2010.

Charlie hails from Atlanta Georgia where he raised 6 children. Surviving are 4 boys and 1 daughter; Ricky Stubbs from San Diego California, Eddie Stubbs from Charleston South Carolina, Sonja Sears from Winder Georgia and Mike Culberson from Flowery Branch Georgia. He is survived by 6 Grandchildren and 5 Great Children.

Charlie joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 15 and sailed the world for three years.

After his stint with the Merchant Marines Charlie served eight years in the Marine Corps during Guantanamo Bay and Cuba and later was recalled to serve in Korea.

Charlie’s career centered on his two loves: art and woodworking. As a home builder in Atlanta he built many, many homes by hand with the help of his legendary crew. Eventually he used his love of art and woodworking in establishing a sign company in Atlanta. Charlie “retired” to Tiger Georgia in the late 90’s where he opened a handy man and sign painting business.

He loved to play golf most all of his life and shot his age up until the time of his death.

Charlie made good friends wherever he went. He will be sorely missed by all the folks he touched in Clayton.

A memorial service will be held at Cannonwood on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 2 PM.

Robert Ellis Dowdy

Robert Ellis Dowdy, 74 of Otto North Carolina passed away on June 26, 2010 at Mission Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dowdy was born June 28, 1935 the son of the late John C. Dowdy and Elsie Ramey Dowdy in Decatur Georgia. He loved music and played with the sunset trio. He was a retired auto mechanic, Preacher and conducted services at Britt Heaven Nursing Home twice a month. He was loved by all who met. He was a member at Newman Chapel Baptist Church in Otto, North Carolina. He lived in Suwannee, Georgia for thirty five years and had move to Otto, North Carolina full time five years ago.

Mr. Dowdy was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter Deanna Marie Dowdy.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris Dowdy of Otto, NC; one brother James C. Dowdy; two sisters Alice Williams, Beulah Carter; thirteen nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home Sunday June 27, 2010 from 1 until 6 pm.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm Monday June 28, 2010 in the chapel of Beck Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Cannon, Rev. Roy Biddy and Rev. Larry Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in the Newman Chapel Cemetery.
