Carlos A. Bland Sr.
Mr. Carlos A. Bland Sr., age 88, died Tuesday at Statesboro Nursing Home after a long illness. The Liberty County native had lived most of his life in Bulloch County. Mr. Bland formerly lived in the area now occupied by Ft. Stewart. He was a former member of the Lotts Creek Hunting Club and a present member of Nevil’s Hunting Club. He was a farmer.
Surviving are two sons, Carlos (C.A.) Bland Jr. of Bloomingdale, Georgia, and Billy F. Bland of Fayetteville, Georgia; one brother, Elmer M. Bland of Pooler; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Friday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at Beard’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

A.J. Futch
A.J. Futch, 88, died August 5, 2001, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton after a short illness. The Evans County native was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge #335. He was a Naval Stores employee for a number of years and a retired maintenance employee from the Claxton High School. He was presently employed by the City of Claxton under The Green Thumb program.
Surviving are two daughters, Ilene Faust of Claxton and Louise Clark of Claxton; three sons, Rabon Futch of Bellville, Alton Futch of Douglasville and G.C. Coley of Palatka, Florida; one sister, Dollie Rogers of Claxton; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 7, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Antioch Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Earl Saxon and the Rev. Don Bazal officiating.
Pallbearers were Vernon Rogers, Alvin Futch, Joe Futch, Calvin Futch, Lester Crosby and Theron Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Eastside Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church.

Lucille Calloway Jones
Lucille Calloway Jones, 84, died August 3, 2001, at Claxton Nursing Home in Claxton. The Evans County native was a member of The First Baptist Church, The TEL Sunday School Class, Prime Timers and Cathleen Jones Mission Group.
Surviving are four nieces, Patty Boyette of Claxton, Pam Rogers of Hinesville, Willene Weller of Claxton, and Lynette NeSmith of Snellgrove; two nephews, Al Jenkins of Wildwood, Florida and Curtis Barrow of Register.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 5, 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Claxton. Burial followed at Bull Creek Church Cemetery, with Dr. Carlton Allen officiating.
Pallbearers were Tim and Anthony Kicklighter, Bryant Boyette, Terrell and Johnny McCall, and Marcus McCall.

Thomas Eugene Griffin
Thomas Eugene Griffin, 76, died August 5, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. The Evans County native had been residing in Effingham County for the past 15 years. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church and retired from Haile Tobacco Company after 35 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and recipient of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Grace Stafford Griffin of Guyton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Susan Griffin, Mark and Anne Griffin and John Griffin, all of Savannah, and Craig and Brenda Griffin of Carrollton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie Groover of Guyton and Gwen and Morgan Grooms of Lawrence, Kansas; one brother, Leon Griffin of Port Wentworth; five sisters, Mattie Eason of Claxton, Ruby Barnard of Savannah, Allie Mae Gulledge of Guyton, Lorene Cohen of Glennville and Mildred Byrd of Pooler; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 8, 11 a.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Brewton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Jeremy Griffin, Bryan Long, Matthew and Steven Groover, Brandon, Michael, Thomas and Taylor Griffin.

Willie Mae Ambrose
Willie Mae Ambrose, 84, died Saturday at Glenvue Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a native of Evans County and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton. She was a homemaker and the widow of R. E. Ambrose and was preceded in death by her daughter, Evelyn DeLoach and two sons, James Ambrose and Bruce Ambrose Sr.
Surviving are, one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Dennis Swart of Savannah; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Jerry Ambrose of Yorktown, Va., George and Marty Ambrose of Jonesboro, Ga., Harry and Angela Ambrose of Bellville, Wilma Ambrose of Claxton and Martha Tucker of Bellville; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a special friend, Vera DeLoach of Glennville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9 at 3 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel with the Rev. Don Bazal officiating. Burial followed in Brewton cemetery in Hagan.
Pallbearers were grandsons Steve Ambrose, Bruce Ambrose Jr., Timmy Ambrose, Jeff Ambrose, Scott Swart and Mike Swart.

Reba Elizabeth Sallee
Reba Elizabeth Sallee, 75, died October 9, 2001, at her residence. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a long time resident of Evans County.
Surviving are one brother, Warren Wilbanks of Claxton; one sister, Emily Betts of Brunswick, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Friday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at Brewton cemetery in Hagan with the Rev. Eric Sizemore officiating.

Joan A. Jones
Joan A. Jones, 71, died Saturday, October 13, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native was a former resident of Shellman Bluff and had lived in Winder for the past 32 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church. Ms. Jones was preceded in death by her husband Dannie Jones.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Hodges of Ludowici, Diane Stafford of Winder and Laura Jones of Bethlehem; two sons, John Daniel Jones of Winder and Joseph Adrin Jones of Winder; one brother, Jerry Alexander of Shellman Bluff; one sister, Peggy Cook of McLean, VA; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren.

Thurmond Lott, 66, died Nov. 21, 2001, at his residence in Evans County. The Evans County native was of Baptist faith.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Susan Lott and Eddie and Beth Lott, all of Claxton; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Terry Dubberly of Claxton; six brothers, Rudolph Lott of Puyallup, Washington, Garland, Henry, and Hinton Lott, all of Claxton, Sam Lott of Manassas and Joe Lott of Hagan; five sisters, Mary L. Cosson of Orlando, Fla., Betty McCoy of Meldrim, Dorothea Taylor, Rubey Hodges and Nanette Hutcheson, all of Claxton; two granddaughters, Kristin Lott and Anna Dubberly, and two grandsons, Levi and Mark Lott; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Garris C. Richardson
Garris C. Richardson, 96, died Nov. 24, 2001, at Statesboro Nursing Home. The Neshoba County, Mississippi native was a member of the Marigold Methodist Church in Merigold, Mississippi, but had resided in Evans County for seven years.
Surviving are his wife, Thyra Scawright Richardson of Claxton; one daughter and son-in-law, Thyra and Steve Simmons of Claxton; one brother, Woodrow Richardson of Gautier, Mississippi; one grandson, Jonathan Simmons of Claxton; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 26, 11 a.m. at Brewton Cemetery, with the Rev. Eric Sizemore officiating.

Laverna S. Mitchell
Laverna S. Mitchell, 86, died Nov. 24, 2001, at Hospice Savannah Inc. after a long illness. The Evans County native was a member of Ephesus Church. She retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was employed as a nurse’s assistant. She celebrated 64 years of marriage with the late Ralph A. Mitchell.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Billy A. and Sue Mitchell of Savannah, Freddie L. and Annette Mitchell of Richmond Hill, Leon and Faye Mitchell and Cleon Mitchell of Swainsboro; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Ephesus Church Cemetery.

William S. Timmons
William S. Timmons died Thursday, November 15, 2001, after a short illness. He was a resident of Mariposa, California, and lived several years in Claxton.
Surviving are four children, Deborah Hill of Claxton, Leslie Rollins of Roy, Utah, Michael Timmons of Mission Viejo, California and Shauna Morris of Boise, Idaho; two brothers, Richard Timmons of Mariposa, California and David Timmons of Franklin, Tennessee; a sister, Betty Timmons of Sacramento, California; nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held for the family at the Faith Assembly of God in Mariposa, California.
Edward Sikes
Edward Sikes, 67, died Nov. 22, 2001, at Candler County Hospital. The Evans County native was a member of Sikes Chapel.
Surviving are two sisters and brother-in-law, Aretha Blakewood of Rincon and Althea and Roy Hay of Bluffton, SC; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Nov. 24, 3 p.m., at Sikes Chapel Church Cemetery.
