Gladys ‘Sammy’ Parker
Gladys ‘Sammy’ Parker, 84, died May 19, 2002, of natural causes in Klamath Falls. Mrs. Parker was born April 8, 1918 in Oaks, N.D., to Louie and Anne (Buchholz) Samel. After graduating from high school in Portland, she received nurse’s training at Emanuel Hospital for four years, graduating with a registered nurse degree in 1941.
She then went to the University of Oregon, where she worked in the dispensary and completed a degree to qualify her to be an x-ray technician. Mrs. Parker then worked as a registered nurse in the Salem and Eugene areas, Honolulu, Hawaii, Key West, Fla., and in Klamath Falls for Dr. Sharp until his retirement and Dr. Magee until her retirement in 1980. She was a 50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi and a member of the Elks Lodge Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, James Parker of Klamath Falls; four brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Cecelia Samel of Newport and Roger and Phyllis Samel, Carl and Kay Samel and Bud and Roberta Samel of Portland; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haven of Rest Mausoleum in Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens with pastors Tim and Donna Herzfeldt-Kamprath and Dennis Martalla officiating.

Lindale Tippins
Lindale Tippins, 86, died Thursday, September 26 at Evans Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a native of Bulloch County and lived most of her life in Evans County. She was on the Evans County Board of Education for 13 years. She was a housewife and a member of Sikes Chapel United Methodist Church. She was also a retired farmer.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Jo Ellen Tippins of Claxton, S. Gary Tippins of Savannah; one daughter and son-in-law, Clarice and Jim Wadsworth of Savannah; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 29, 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tab Smith officiating. Burial followed in Brewton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Delmas Hendrix, Steve Blalock, Adam Kennedy, John Edwards, Wayne Massey, and Tebe Tippins. Honorary pallbearers were the sheriff and police departments.

Evelyn Doris Nease
Evelyn Doris Nease, 80, died November 30 at the home of her daughter in St. Mary’s. The Bulloch County native had resided in Evans County most of her life. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and also attended Friendship P.B. Church in Statesboro. She was predeceased by her husband, Loary Barker Nease. She was a loving wife and mother.
Surviving are three sons, L.B. Nease Jr. of Statesboro, Franklin Nease of Titusville and Darnell Nease of Hilton Head, S.C.; two daughters, Martha Olliff of Kingsland and Julie Husler of St Mary’s; one brother, Calvin Larrimore of Daytona; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service were held Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Brewton Cemetery.

Lee Glenn Kicklighter
Lee Glenn Kicklighter, 77, died Dec. 2 at the Claxton Nursing Home. The Bulloch County native had resided in Evans County most of his life. He was a retired farmer. He was of Baptist faith.
Surviving are one sister, Ella Ouida Tucker of Claxton and one half sister, Kathaleen Costa of Connecticut; two half brothers, Garnett Kerby of Bluffton, S.C., and Bobby Kerby of Colorado Springs, Co.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ephesus Cemetery.

Harrell V. Stripling
Harrell V. Stripling, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 28 at Rockdale County Hospital. The Tift County native was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tifton and attended Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers. He was the former owner and operator of S&S Food Marts in Fulton, Dekalb, and Rockdale Counties, and former co-owner of C&D Vending Co. He was an avid saltwater fisherman.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn L. Stripling of Conyers; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Danny Strickland of Claxton, and Terri and Tommy Strickland of Springfield; a step-daughter, Sue Becht of Jacksonville, Fl; a stepson, Bob Chambless of Macon; eight grandchildren and spouses, Keith and JoAnn Strickland of Reidsville, Tara Strickland of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Kim and Wade McDonald of Guyton, Trey and Amy Strickland of Rincon, Tonya Strickland of Atlanta, Ryan and Kelly Strickland of Rincon, Missy Becht and Chas Becht, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; six great-grandchildren and spouse, Rashe and Amanda Collins of Claxton, Harley Strickland of Reidsville, Logan and Noah McDonald of Guyton, and Joshua and Emma Strickland of Rincon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Sarah Stripling of Conyers and Henry Frank and Opal Stripling of Stockbridge; a number of niece and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at Locust Grove cemetery near First Baptist Church of Locust Grove.

Myrtle Underwood
Myrtle Underwood, 85, of Evans County, died November 27 at Claxton Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was a member of Claxton Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husbands, Romie Taylor and James Myers.
Surviving are her husband, Edward O. Underwood of Evans County; sons, Henry Taylor of Wadsworth, Ohio, Robert Taylor of Carencre, La., James Taylor of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joseph Taylor of Rock Creek, Ohio; two daughters, Nancy Cartwright of Metter and Mary NeSmith of Brooklet; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Elders Hubert Hendrix and Harold Burnsed officiating. Burial was in Old Anderson cemetery in Evans County.

Carl Joseph Sikes Sr.
Carl Joseph Sikes Sr., 65, died Monday, Feb. 3 after a long illness. He was born in Bryan County. He lived most of his life in Bryan and Evans counties. He was a member of Pembroke Advent Christian Church. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and playing on the computer. He was in the National Guard for three years before joining the Army.
Surviving are his wife Patricia C. Sikes of Claxton; one son, Joe Sikes of Claxton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Matt Kern of Claxton and Angel Sikes and Ronnie Cole of Reidsville; three brothers, the Rev. Joey C. Sikes Sr. of Hinesville, Lloyd C. Sikes of Pembroke, Jerry L. Sikes of Ellabell; one grandson, Matthew Cole of Reidsville.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Bryant and the Rev. Wendell Dubois officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Sikes, Norman Tillman, Andy Mew, Aaron Henderson, Shaun Calahan, Lee Sikes, Jamie Calahan.
Honorary pallbearers were Lex Strickland, Roy Blitch, J.L. Henderson, Daniel Skinner, Vernon Jernigan, Josie C. Sikes Jr.

Brider B. Boles
Brider B. Boles, 78, died Jan. 30 in Evans County. The native of Alabama had resided in Florida for many years before moving to the Evans County area. He worked in the orange groves as a supervisor and later worked as a boat builder. He was of Baptist faith and a veteran of WWII.
Surviving are two sons, Jim Boles of Claxton and Rick Boles of Metter; three daughters, Janice Irwin and Sherry Denton of Claxton, and Diann Rogers of Orlando; one brother, Edward Boles of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Feb. 1 at the Goldenrod Chapel of Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home in Orlando.

Gertrud Bills
Gertrud Bills, 76, died Jan. 30 at Claxton Nursing Home. She was a native of Estonia. She and Ronald Bills married
on July 10, 1948 in Stuttgart, Germany. After their marriage they resided in Savannah for many years before moving to Evans County in 2000. She was of Lutheran faith. Mrs. Bills was a wonderful gardener, wife and mother.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Donald C. Bills of Claxton; one daughter, Tammara Helen Kicklighter of Claxton; one sister, Margaret Brehm of Canada.

Edith Roach Downs
Edith Roach Downs, 91, died Jan. 28 at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton.
Mrs. Downs was predeceased by her husband, Albert Christian “Kick” Downs. Mrs. Downs was a lifelong resident of Evans County. She was a member of the Claxton First United Methodist Church and the George Durrence Sunday School class. She was a graduate of Georgia Teachers College and retired from the Evans County Elementary School system where she taught fourth grade for over 33 years. She served on the administrative board of the Claxton First United Methodist Church, the Evans County Board of Health, and the Georgia Retired Teachers Association where she received the Emeritus award when she was 90.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Emily Downs of Claxton; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Carlton House of Claxton; one sister, Mary Lee Durrence of Claxton; three grandchildren, Kerry Christian House Fulton of Columbia, S.C., Derrick Winship Downs of Savannah and Dorrie Downs Whitehead of Daisy; one great-grandchild, Gabrielle Christian Fulton of Columbia, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 31, 11 a.m. at the Claxton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Hutto and Dr. Tab Smith officiating. Burial was in Brewton Cemetery.

Ada Lou Rowe Waters
Ada Lou Rowe Waters, 96, died Jan. 28 at the Claxton Nursing Home. She was the daughter of William Oscar Rowe and Ada Ophelia Griner Rowe. The Evans County native was a member of the Rogers Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Pinewood Christian Academy and several other counties in Georgia. She was the first graduate of South Georgia Normal Teachers College. She was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Willie T. Waters and a son, James Oscar Waters.
Surviving are one son, Billy T. Waters of Claxton; two daughters-in-law, Alice C. Waters of Claxton and Ann S. Waters of Claxton; five grandchildren, Allen Waters of Claxton, Charles Waters of Claxton, Jeanine W. Hutcheson of Claxton, Susan Waters of Bridgeport, Ct., and Teresa W. Davis of Claxton; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Genese Sapp
Genese Sapp, 64, died Jan. 29 at her residence in Hagan. She was predeceased by her husband, Loren Sapp. She was a native of Appling County, but had resided in Evans County for the past 40 years. Mrs. Sapp was a childhood member of Williamson Chapel and a member of the Concerted Services Senior Citizen Group.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel and Lori Sapp of Bryan County and Kenny Sapp of Evans County; one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Eric Sapp of Claxton; three step-sons, J.L. Sapp of Hortense, Paul and Barry Sapp, both of Evans County; four step-daughters, Claudine Womble and Barbara Murphy, both of Evans County, Irene Akins of Bulloch County and Clydette Cruz of Texas; two brothers, H.L. Williamson and Guyton Williamson of Vidalia; one sister, Bernice Jackson of Vidalia; six grandchildren, Erica, Faith, Alex, Phillip, Victoria and Taylor Sapp; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 31, 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Brewton Cemetery.
