James Burnett
James Burnard Burnett, 63, of Blue Ridge died Nov. 19, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital in Decatur, Ga.
Burnett was born in Cherokee, N.C., to the late Jewell Dexter and Mary Waters Burnett. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in the 101st Airborne Division.
Survivors include sons, Gregory Scott Burnett and William Douglas Burnett, both of Blue Ridge; sisters Linda Loftis of Blue Ridge, Glenda Collis of Mineral Bluff, Burnece Shields of Blue Ridge and Joyce Farmer of Cleveland, Tenn.; five grandchildren; niece Donna McClure and family; and nephew James Loftis.
A private family memorial service was held on Nov. 22.

Ruth Jones
Ruth A. Harrison Jones, 67, of McCaysville died Nov. 26, 2002 in Dallas, Ga. Born in Fannin County, she was the daughter of the late Grady and Edith Chancey Harrison.
She was a mother and grandmother and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by brothers Ernest Harrison, Wayne Harrison and Lewis Harrison.
Survivors include son Steve Jones of McCaysville; sisters Linda Arp and Sonja Ratcliff, both of Dallas, Edna Beavers of McCaysville and Billie Bailey of Sumter, S.C.; grandchild Sally Ann Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. from the Akins of Blue Ridge Chapel with the Rev. Claude Mathis and Minister Bill Johnston officiating. Music was by Sally Ann Jones and Kimberly Moore.
Pallbearers included Benny Turner, Jimmy Harrison, Eddie Nix, Charles Reed, Darrel Moore and Wade German. Honorary escorts were Glen Beavers, Roy Chancey, and Jack Ganues. iIntermentfollowed in Crestlawn Cemetery.

Kyler Ray Knight Jr.
Kyler Ray Knight Jr., 27 of Eastland, Texas, formerly of Claxton, died in an automobile accident Saturday, September 25. Mr. Knight was born in Statesboro and lived in the Claxton area with his parents many years before moving to Texas. His love for Georgia had brought him back to the area many times recently to visit with local family and friends.
Surviving are his parents, Kyler and Jerri Burnsed Knight of Cisco, Texas; a brother, Kevin Knight of Sanger, Texas; a sister, Ginny Knight of Cisco, Texas; grandmother, Virginia Burnsed of Claxton; his fiancee, Cayla Conger of Eastland; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in the Claxton/Savannah area.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 at First Christian Church in Cisco, Texas.
Johnnie ‘J.C.’ Conley
Johnnie ‘J.C.’ Conley, 75, died at his home after a long illness. He was a native of Evans County and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was a retired welder and former owner of Mrs. Rogers Restaurant for 15 years.
Surivivng are his wife, Ida P. Conley of Claxton; one son, Curtis Conley of Claxton; one daughter, Sharon Conley Willis of Claxton; six brothers, Robert of Daisy, Charles of S.C., Leonard Jr. of Hagan, Frankie of Reidsville, Billy of Glennville and Ellis Conley of Claxton; seven sisters, Miriam Carroll of Kyle, Texas, Laverne Cannon of Baxley, Shirley Crosby of S.C., Joyce Harrell and Cathy Cason of Glennville, Betty Sue Riggs of Hagan, Pansy Smith of Bellville; his step-mother, Mattie Lou Conley of Hagan; six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 6, 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. David Hagan, and the Rev. Gatus Cheatham officiating. Burial was in Brewton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Marty, Owen, Eric, Louis and Terry Strickland and Joey Garcia.

Delmas Adams
Delmas Adams, 96, died November 8 at his residence in Evans County after a short illness. He was under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice and was given special care by Bernease Jordan, Michelle Vermillion and Pam Bacon.
The Evans County native and lifelong resident owned and operated Adams Floor Covering for over 40 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elma Adams, and a daughter, Sandra Nevil.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Farris Cowart of Seabrook Island, S.C.; one brother, Joe Adams of Statesboro; four grandchildren and spouses, Leigh and Gary Bell of Bellville, Joe Nevil of Statesboro, Sonya and Ricky Bland of Glennville, and April and Anthony Tippins of Conyers; four great-grandchildren, Jarrod Strickland of Claxton, Colton Bland of Glennville and Brett and Logan Tippins of Conyers; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Brewton cemetery in Hagan.

Barbara A. Werth
Barbara A. Werth, 54, died in East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She served her country 20 years in the Air Force Reserve and was a first Gulf War veteran. She was the first one to fly on the C17 Aircraft. She received her MSN from the Medical College of Georgia.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Maury and Kimberly Werth of Savannah; one brother, Bruce Perry of Baltimore; one sister, Bonnie Perry of Ohio; one grandchild, Breeanne Werth of Savannah.

Dorothy Meadows Girardeau
Dorothy Meadows Girardeau, widow of Rufus K. Girardeau, was born in Toombs County in the Ohoopee community. She was reared and attended school in Lyons. Dorothy attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, and taught school during the war years. She lived in Claxton for the past 55 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Lee Girardeau, Dean Girardeau, Hal Girardeau; one daughter, Gail Watson; one grandson, Tom Girardeau; five granddaughters, Jill Girardeau, Naomi Girardeau, Carina Girardeau, Amy Girardeau, and Millie Girardeau.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Brewton Cemetery.

Cynthia Jones Green
Cynthia Jones Green, 51, died Saturday, November 20 at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. The Tattnall County native was a graduate of Reidsville High School and was currently a student at Brewton Parker College. She was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Glennville where she had formerly served as secretary. She did missionary work in Mississippi, helped build a church in Cochran while attending college and was currently helping to build Lyons Outreach Church in Lyons.
Surviving are her husband, Bailey E. Green Jr. of Reidsville; one son, Joseph E. Green of Iraq; daughter-in-law, Talissa of Pooler; her parents, Talmadge and Marilyn Jones of Reidsville; one sister, Sandra Jones Hutto of Reidsville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Rickey Jones, Allen and Janet Jones, Arnie and Renee Jones, all of Reidsville; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the First United Pentecostal Church in Glennville with the Rev. James Holland officiating. Burial was in Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brandon Jones, Josh Curry, Jordan Rushing, Joe Gomez, Richard Stanfield and Ben Mullis.

Betty Smiley Floyd
Betty Smiley Floyd, 74, died Wednesday, January 19 at her residence after a short illness under Hospice Care. She was a native and lifelong resident of Liberty County. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hinesville. She was retired as chief deputy clerk of the Liberty County Superior Court.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bill Floyd and a brother, Billy Smiley.
Surviving are her husband, Billy Floyd of Hinesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Peyton and Denise Floyd of Lexington, S.C., and Mark and Karen Floyd of Hinesville; a daughter, Juli Floyd Usry of Sandersville; four brothers, Carroll Smiley Sr. of Eatonton, Bob Smiley of Gum Branch, Neil Smiley of Richmond Hill, and Hugh M. Smiley of Brooklet; a sister, Margaret S. Floyd of Hinesville; seven grandchildren, Tripp and Sharon Usry and Jennifer Usry of Sandersville, Will and Brent Floyd of Lexington, S.C., Becky Floyd of Jacksonville, Fla., and Markie and Martin Floyd of Hinesville; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, January 21 at First Baptist Church in Hinesville with the Rev. Charles E. Owens officiating. Burial was in Gum Branch Cemetery.

Mary Pearl Jackson
Mary Pearl Jackson, 100, passed away February 17 at Claxton Nursing Home. The Bulloch County native was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton. She retired from Morrison’s Cafeteria and later moved to Claxton in 1967. Ms. Jackson lived with her nephew and his wife, Heyward and Geraldine Rountree for three years before going to Claxton Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Jackson; her two sisters, Beulah Barrow and Maude Jones; four brothers, Roy Rountree, Willie Rountree, Lonnie Rountree and Claude Rountree.
Surviving are four nieces, Geraldine Rountree, Lorretta Scott, and Juanita Lewis, all of Claxton and Deloris Meehan of Savannah; five nephews, Melvin Barrow of South Carolina, Paul and Ronnie Rountree of Claxton, Billy Rountree of Springfield, and Larry Rountree.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 19, 1 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gatus Cheatham officiating. Burial was in Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah.

Bessie Mae Blocker
Mrs. Bessie Mae Blocker, 99, passed into eternal rest Wednesday, November 16 at Tattnall County Community Hospital in Reidsville.
She is survived by a devoted husband, Charlie Blocker; a daughter, Tangra Delgoda; two sisters, Elizabeth Carter and Annie Lee Bacon; one brother, J.C. Mikel.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 23, 11 a.m. at St. John Baptist Church, Claxton. iIntermentwill be in Green Cypress Church Cemetery. Viewing was held Tuesday, November 22 from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. in the sanctuary of Harper’s Funeral Home.
