Mrs. Bertha Anita Harrison, 57 of Claxton and formerly of New Rochelle, N.Y. passed away Thursday, Oct. 6 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly S. Ricks and Mary Ellen Easley Ricks, and a brother, Kelly Ricks Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Louis D. Harrison of Claxton; three children, Herman Cureton, Dina Cureton, Avery Cureton, all of New Rochelle, N.Y.; brother, David Ricks of New Rochelle, N.Y.; uncles, Elbert (Marge) Easley of Dalton, Charles Easley of Atlanta; aunts, Cornelia Easley of Dalton, and Beatrice Easley of Powder Springs; her grandson, Avery Cureton Jr., of N.Y., who was reared by his grandmother; five other grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 9, 1 p.m. at the chapel of Willis Funeral Home with Dr. Jerry Jones and other ministers officiating. Family and friends served as casket bearers and flower bearers. iIntermentwas in West Hill Cemetery.

Charles Arthur Fiveash
Charles Arthur Fiveash, 75, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 7.
Mr. Fiveash was a native of Ware County and had resided in Evans County for a number of years. He was a member of Eason Chapel United Methodist Church. He also had membership with the Blind Veterans Association, Disabled Veterans Association and Ezel Lodge #335.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, as well as in the Air National Guard and Civil Service.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Ellen Bacon Fiveash of Claxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Charles and Amy Fiveash of Claxton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and David Yarbrough of Claxton, and Charlene and Bryon Haire of Sylvania; one sister Dorothy Merritt of Douglasville; seven grandchildren, Heather Maner, Jeremy and Corey Yarbrough, Alicia Haire, Tanner, Taylor and Tori Fiveash; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 9, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben Glosson and the Rev. Charles Fiveash officiating. Burial was in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Richey, Byron Haire, Curtis Yarbrough Sr., Lyndon Kicklighter, John Spandle, and Leon Waters.

Charles ‘Charlie’ J. Lands
Charles ‘Charlie’ J. Lands, 62, passed away June 11 at East Georgia Regional Hospital in Statesboro.
The New Orleans native had resided in Evans County since 1982. He married
the late Janice Smith Lands in 1966. He retired from the Air Force with 20 years service, served in Vietnam in 1967-68, and was presently employed at Claxton Poultry for the past 22 years.
Surviving are his fiancé, Patricia Corley of Claxton; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John Derek and Maria Lands of Claxton, Charles Kevin Lands and Shawn Lands, both of Claxton; one brother, Gerald Lands of New Orleans; one sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Woody Wilson of New Orleans; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wedesday, June 14, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Antioch Church Cemetery.

Vera Lewis Rushing
Mrs. Vera Lewis Rushing, age 86, passed away Friday morning at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. The native and life-long resident of Bulloch County lived in the Sinkhole Community until moving to Statesboro in 1996. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Nevils. Mrs. Rushing was a retired school bus driver, a member of Bulloch County Young at Heart Senior Kazoo Band and Canasta Club. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Roxie Rowe Lewis and G.A. (Sad) Lewis; her husband, Henry Clinton Rushing; her siblings; and a son, Jimmy Ray Rushing of Claxton.
Surviving are two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jerry D. and Lynelle Rushing of Statesboro, Johnny C. and Karen Rushing of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Patricia Rushing Durrence of Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Janelle R. and Don Hughes of Brooklet; a sister- in-law, Ora Nell Lewis of Claxton; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cletis and Marion (Red) Conaway of Reidsville; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Eason officiating.
Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery in Register.
Pallbearers were Corey Rushing, Colt Rushing, Cade Rushing, John Lehman Rushing, Trent Hodges, Jeffrey Neal Rushing, Jerry Rushing Jr. and David Clenny.

Rev. Edgar Eugene ‘Sonny’ Ross
Rev. Edgar Eugene “Sonny” Ross, 72, of Douglas, Ga. passed away Monday, June 26, , in Candler Hospital at Savannah. Ross, a native of Scott County, Mo. was born November 14, 1933, son of the late John Buell and Juanita Brashear Rose Ross.
His church membership was at the Stockbridge Church of God of Prophecy. A retired minister after 37 years, he was a Bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy and pastored in several states, where he also served State Secretary of the Iowa, Missouri and Georgia churches. He was a masonry contractor and a U.S. Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Faye Risenhoover Ross of Douglas; two daughters, Debra Faye (Richard) Bartlett of Stockbridge and Sherry Elaine (Travis) Peavy of Douglas; two sons, Derek Eugene (Michele) Ross of Douglas and Tracy Lee (Kendra) Ross of Acworth, Ga.; grandchildren, Joshua Ross, Jeremiah Bartlett, Zack Ross, Bethany Bartlett, Jordan Ross, Mathew Peavy, Kristian Peavy, Sophia Ross, Trey Ross, Tyler Ross and Dustin Ross, great-grandchild, Madison Ross, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 29 in the sanctuary at Waldroup Avenue in Douglas with the Rev. Travis Peavy, the Rev. Richard Bartlett, the Rev. Barry Peavy and the Rev. H.E. Cardin officiating. Burial followed in the Axson cemetery in Atkinson County.
Stacy and Jeremiah Bartlett sang “I Can’t Even Walk”; soloist, Tracy Ross sang, “Beulah Land”; and the congregation sang, “Amazing Grace” with Sam Jordan, organist.
Pallbearers were Jeremiah Bartlett, Mathew Peavy, Zack Ross, Tray Ross, Britt Peavy and Kerry Scarborough.

Jessie Lee Baker
Mr. Jessie Lee Baker, 67, died Tuesday, June 27 at his residence in Claxton. He was born in Long County to the late Richard Baker Sr. and Carrie Lee Hamilton Baker. He has lived in Evans County for six years and was a member of St. James Baptist Church in Ludowici.
Surviving are two sons, Everett Jackson and Christopher Jessie Baker of N.Y.; five daughters, Stephanie Love of Claxton, Carrie G. Baker, Gwendolyn Baker, Wanda Baker, all of Atlanta, and Regina McCall of Hinesville; six brothers, Leland Baker and Richard Baker Jr. of New Brunswick, N.J., John Baker of Allenhurst, Jerry Hargrove-Baker of Riceboro, Leroy Baker of Hinesville, and Artis Baker of Bowlingreen, Fla.; five sisters, Myrtle Baker, Essie Gilkey and Stella Baker of Hinesville, Barbara Baker and Lottie Baker of Bowlingreen, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Monday, July 3 at Frank V. Givens Memorial Chapel in Midway. iIntermentwas in Oak Ridge cemetery in Ludowici.

Raymond Groover
Mr. Raymond Groover, 71, passed away Monday, July 10 at the Statesboro Nursing Home. The Bulloch County native had lived in Statesboro most of his life. He was employed by Atlanta News Agency as a route salesman. He was of the Southern Baptist faith
He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Lee Hunter Groover.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David and Marie Groover of Brooklet; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Greg Fowler of North Carolina, and Sheila D. Plymel of Statesboro; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Flock Church cemetery near Collins with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating.
Pallbearers were Kenny Hunter, Glen Berry, Corey Fowler, Robbie Nelson, Josh Fowler, and Jimmy Groover.

Lona Mae Wells
Lona Mae Wells, 80, passed away Monday, July 10 at Tattnall Health Care Center in Reidsville. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was retired from Rotary Corporation as a clerk and was a member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Tina Wells of Savannah; grandson, Corey Wells of Savannah; brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Louise Whitaker of Collins; a niece, Gloria Glisson of Reidsville; a nephew, Billy Whitaker of Collins.

Charles Roy Hooten III
Charles Roy Hooten III, 66 passed away Sunday, July 9 at Candler County Hospital. The Lagrange native had lived in Atlanta and Savannah most of his life. He was retired from the U.S. Government. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force where he received the purple heart. He was of Baptist faith.
Surviving are a sister, Laura Bergeron of Ridgeland, Ms.; two nieces, Katie (Andy) Kennedy of Las Vegas, and Amy Bergeron of Ridgeland, Ms.; a great-niece, Maggie Kennedy of Las Vegas.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. iIntermentwill follow with full military honors.

Margaret Elizabeth (Dasher) Waters
Margaret Elizabeth (Dasher) Waters, 74, passed away July 9. Born in Tattnall County, she lived in Evans County for most of her life. She was a member of Union U.M.C. and the Day Spring Emmaus Community.
Surviving are her husband, Leon Waters of Claxton; her children and spouses, Joe and Linda Waters of Statesboro, Peggy and John Spandle of Claxton, Lonnie and Janet Waters of Orange Lake, Fla., and Linda Madala of Brunswick; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 12, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Rush officiating. Burial was in Union Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clinton Dasher, Charles Brewton, Gary Waters, Adrian Aaron, Bob Anderson, and Ed Mosley.
