Pruella Cromartie Niver Canham age 82, long time Fort Myers educator past to eternal rest Tuesday, August 14, 2007 after a long illness.

She is survived by husband David Canham, daughter Peddy Moran (Scott Moran), grandson Matthew Hayhurst (Allison Hayhurst); predeceased by parents Esten Graham and Mary Lee (Jones) Cromartie of Statesboro, GA.

Pruella is survived by numerous family, friends and students who revered her personal touch, caring attention, and pride for personal history. As she was fond of saying to those she hope to instill a love of her genteel upbringing, "When I was a little girl".

Born December 4, 1924 in Statesboro, GA and raised by Georgia Teachers College first head football coach she developed her life long passion for educating and enhancing the life of children, taking a personal interest in their individual lives. Graduating with honors from Statesboro Georgia High School in 1941 she received her degree from modern day Georgia Southern University, participating in numerous special activities including sororities, music production, and earning a BS in Business and Music.

During World War II she worked at Warner Robbins Air Base in Statesboro, GA participating in several activities such as the USO.

She began her elementary teaching career at Westside school in Satesboro and moved to Opelika, Alabama.

Pruella and Robert Niver moved to Fort Myers in 1956 and opened the Miracle Mile veterinarian clinic on Cleveland Avenue. She began teaching at North Fort Myers High School in 1967, quickly earning the respect and reputation of students, faculty, and administrators, culminating in her selection of Lee County Teacher of the Year in 1987.

In 1982, Pruella met and married David L. Canham, a retired GM Engineer. They enjoyed many years of relaxation and travel as well as her collections of interesting and unusual articles.

Her accomplishments include President, Florida League of Arts, Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities 1944, Personalities of the south 1980-82, Directory of Distinguished Americans 1981, Community Leaders of America 1981, The Biographical Roll of Honor for Distinguished Service to the Arts, Community, State, and Nation 1981, 2, 000 Notable Americans 1982, 2, 000 Distinguished Southerners 1982, Distinguished Americans First Edition for State and Community Service to the Arts 1982, The World's Who's Who of Women 1983, Community Leaders of America 1987, Member Singers Club of L.I., guest speaker, panelist various cultural orgns in Fla and so. states, soloist various chs and schs; music cons. local theater groups; mem. FL State Secondary Music Instructional Materials Coun. Nominee Gannett Found. Heart of Gold Humanitarian award 1981, Named Vocal Solo Lit. Music Specialist State of Florida, Nominee Nat. A local service will be held on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 6:00pm at the Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Fl 33907, with a reception following the service at 10190 McGregor Blvd, Fort Myers. Final interment at East Side Cemetery, Statesboro, GA at a later date.

Mr. John Wendell Newton

Statesboro, GA

Mr. John Wendell Newton, age 80, died Thursday morning. The Jenkins County native was a 1944 graduate of Jenkins County High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic. He was a Field Supervisor with the ASCS office for several years before becoming a full time farmer in 1964, farming his family farm in the Four Points Community. Mr. Newton was a member of the Gracewood Baptist Church where he had been a member for nearly 50 years; he was the oldest member and had served as a deacon and former Sunday School Superintendent.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Newton will also be remembered for his love of the outdoors, growing produce in his gardens and sharing it with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mildred Groover Newton of Statesboro; two daughters and sons in law, Lynn and Walt Lamb of Statesboro and Dianne and Gil Shaw of Oakland, CA; a son and daughter in law, David and Brenda Newton of Garfield; five grandsons, Jonathan Lamb, Brett Lamb, Jordan Lamb, Matthew Newton and Bryce Lamb; a granddaughter, Nichole Newton; a sister and brother in law, Betty and Vernon Massey of Rincon and an aunt, Elizabeth Daniel of Millen. Several cousins also survive.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00pm at the Gracewood Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Eckles and Rev. Carl Ledbetter officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

iIntermentwill be in the Elam Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Mac Arthur Hudson.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons past and present of the Gracewood Baptist Church.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to 12376 Hwy 301 S. Statesboro, Ga. 30458.

Mr. Henry Ray Anderson

Register, GA

Mr. Henry Ray Anderson, age 79, died Thursday morning at his residence. The Johnson County native traveled with his military career in the U.S. Army for over 20 years. He lived in several area including, Germany, Alabama and Oklahoma. Following his retirement from the military, Mr. Anderson moved to Bulloch County and was employed with Georgia Southern College Campus Security for 15 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter and son in law, Diane and Robert NeSmith of Register and two grandchildren, Melanie and Joey Cannady of Brooklet and Daniel Ray NeSmith of Register.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Graveside services and burial will be Saturday at 2:00pm at the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Raymond Shaw

Statesboro, GA.

Mr. Raymond Robert Shaw, age 68, died Thursday morning at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center following a long illness. The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was a 1958 graduate of Southeast Bulloch High School. Mr. Shaw farmed for many years and in 1982 purchased Rex’s Pawn Shop in Statesboro in which he operated until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of Alcoholic’s Anonymous and was a member of the “Smokehouse”. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Merrywood Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Maryann Crawford Shaw of Statesboro; a daughter and son in law, Gayle and Collie Clark of Statesboro; two sons and a daughter in law, Brian and Becky Shaw of Rincon and Paul Shaw of Statesboro; two grandchildren, Laurie and Emma Shaw of Rincon; a brother, Edgar Shaw, Jr. of Jesup and two sisters, Christine Thackston of Brooklet and Barbara Shaw of Marietta. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Services will be Saturday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Will Griffith officiating

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Smokehouse.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Merrywood Baptist Church Building Fund, 23366, Hwy 80 East Statesboro, GA. 30458.

Sonny Butler passed away Saturday evening, December 15th as a result of brain cancer with his family at his side. He was lovingly cared for his last few days at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. He was born in Eastman, Georgia and graduated from Lanier High in Macon, GA.

Sonny served his country honorably as an officer in the U.S. Army for 20 years including the Vietnam conflict. Following military service, he was employed in the private sector of the health care industry and was the owner and developer of Synapse, a patient medical records system. After completing his doctorate, he went into teaching at UNT, EKU and the past five years in the College of Information Technology at Georgia Southern University. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors are his loving wife of 49 years, Sondra Arnold Butler of Statesboro; two daughters and sons in law, Lindy and Robert Clark and Tracy and Marc Guerrero; three grandchildren, Casey, Breanna and Kaleigh all of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Billie Ann Oxford of Warner Robbins and Delores Hinson of Yatesville and his mother in law, Jewell Arnold of Macon.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00am until 12:00pm at Joiner –Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 12:00pm Wednesday in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Graveside services and burial will be Wednesday at 3:30pm at the Macon Memorial Park in Macon, GA.

Mrs. Evelyn Hendrix Bunch

Brooklet, GA

Mrs. Evelyn Hendrix Bunch, age 77, died Friday evening at Brown’s Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was a homemaker. She was a member of the former Community Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son in law, Barbara and Lee Pate of Statesboro; a son and daughter in law, Ezra “Buster” and Beryl Bunch of Mobile, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Stacey and Laura Girardeau, Tracey and Krista Girardeau, Kasey and Richmond Malphus, Alicia and Justin Elder, Elizabeth and Brian Ivey, Shelia Bunch and Paul and Pam Bunch; 12 great-grandchildren and a brother Ralph Hendrix of Atlanta.

Visitation will be Monday from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Memorial services will be at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Pearce officiating.

Donald Edward Borders
(September 2, 1981 - June 2, 2011)

Mr. Donald Edward Borders, age 29, of Cedartown, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011. He was born on September 2, 1981 in Rome, Georgia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray E. and Shirley M. Gross Borders.

Mr. Borders is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Forrister Borders; his parents; daughter, Katelynn Elizabeth Borders; son, Brandon Avery Borders; sisters and brother-in-law, Christina Sharee Palmer and husband David Palmer and Tanya Borders; brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Melissa Borders and grandparents, Raymond and Beatrice Borders and Lola Thomason.

Mr. Borders is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Mr. Lester Gross and Mr. Jackie Thomason.

The funeral arrangements for Mr. Borders will be conducted on Monday, June 6, 2011 at ten o’clock in the morning from the Chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Minister Craig Hallman officiating.

iIntermentwill follow in the Northview Cemetery.

The family of Mr. Borders will receive family and friends on Sunday, June 5, 2011 from six o’clock in the evening until nine o’clock in the evening at the Gammage Funeral Home and also on Monday, June 6, 2011 from nine o’clock in the morning until the funeral hour and the Gammage Funeral Home.

The family has requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to First National Bank of Polk County, 967 Main Street, Cedartown, Georgia 30125; attn: Shirley Borders in Benefit of Katelynn and Brandon Borders.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers; Sean Borders, Cody Summerlin, Larry Strickland, Daniel Forsyth, John Forsyth and Kenny Borders.

The Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Mr. Donald Edward Borders.

Mr. Emmett Scott

Statesboro, GA

Mr. Emmett Scott, age 92, died Wednesday evening at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. The Screven County native lived in Bulloch County most of his life and was raised in the Leefield Community. Mr. Scott was employed as a truck driver with B. Tanner Trucking which was later acquired by W.R. Grace Company, he retired in 1978. Following his retirement from the trucking industry, Mr. Scott accepted a position as the maintenance supervisor for the Statesboro-Bulloch Parks and Recreation from which he retired in 1996 after 18 years of service. On the day of his death the Statesboro –Bulloch Parks and Recreation had held a luncheon in which they established the Emmett Scott Leadership Award. Mr. Scott was a member of the Pittman Park United Methodist Church where he had perfect attendance for 26 years. During his service to the church he had served on the Administrative Board, the XYZ Club, the Methodist men and he was a member of the Henderson Sunday School Class serving as their treasurer for 32 years. Mr. Emmett was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. His wife of 69 years preceded him in death in October of this year.

Surviving are a son and daughter in law, Emmett H. “Hikie”, Jr. and Becky Scott of Statesboro; three grandchildren, Bryan Scott of Denver, CO and Todd Waters and Keli Akins both of Screven County; an adopted grandchild, Melanie Jones of Leefield and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00am at the Pittman Park United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Huling officiating assisted by Rev. Hollie Tapley and Rev. Bill Brown. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

iIntermentwill be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Frank Hook, Bob Hook, Mike Rollins, Ed Nelson, Chad Avret, Ron Nix, Rick Gehle and Pat Rising.

Honorary Pallbearers will be employees and staff of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation and members of the Henderson Sunday School Class.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459 or the Pittman Park United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1102 Fair Road, Statesboro, GA 30458.
