LILLIE MAE CALDWELL ARGROVES
June 17, 1915 - January 12, 2015
Lillie Mae Caldwell Argroves, age 99 of Gay, Ga., passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Alvaton, with Rev. Wendell Banks officiating, assisted by Rev. Chuck Conkle. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Ronald Caldwell, Harold McFarlin, Glenn Argroves, James Argroves, Terry Vining, and P. J. Calhoun. Serving as as an honorary pallbearer will be Lanny Caldwell.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury.

Mrs. Argroves was born June 17, 1915 in the Wooster Community of Meriwether County, Ga., the daughter of William Creed Caldwell and Claudia Owens Caldwell. She believed in hard work, and held numerous jobs through the years, retiring from International Playtex in Manchester after twenty years' service. She was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, having never lived more than seven miles from her birthplace. She was a very active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where for over sixty years she taught the children's Sunday School class. As long as she was able, she never failed to share her strong faith with others, always ready and willing to offer her testimony to anyone who would listen. She loved working in her yard, gardening, and especially growing flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Washington Argroves, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her two daughters; Jane Chappell of Eatonton, Ga., and Glenda Duke and her husband Edward of Griffin, Ga.; a son, Edward Argroves of Gay, Ga.; a former daughter-in-law, Glenda Starling of Gay, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Rhonda Vining of Griffin, Ga., Britt Calhoun of Greenville, Ga., Ronnie Dunn and Tim Dunn both of Griffin, Ga., Wanda Argroves of Gay, Ga., James Argroves and his fiance Danielle of Gay, Ga., and Glenn Argroves and his wife Tammy of Greenville; nine great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Faye Jackson of Newnan, Ga.: a brother, Claude Caldwell of Rocky Mount, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery Fund, or Affinis Hospice 21 Highland Drive, Newnan, Ga. 30263.

KAY WEAVER BOLAND
August 28, 1948 - February 23, 2015
Linda Kay Weaver Boland, age 66 of Waverly Hall, Ga., passed away Monday, February 23, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the residence, 8831 Tuck Persons Highway (Hwy. 208), Waverly Hall, Ga. A private memorial service will be held.

Kay was born August 28, 1948 in Columbus, Ga., the daughter of the late John Ernest Weaver, Jr. and Elizabeth Wilson Weaver. She was a 1966 graduate of Talbot County High School and attended Columbus College. Afterwards, she began her career with the Children's Medical Services in Columbus, and retired there as an Administrative Clerk after 33 years' service. She was a very active member of Waverly Hall United Methodist Church where she had held many positions including serving on the church council, was a former Trustee, Church Secretary, and was instrumental in planning and preparing the Wednesday night suppers. She loved people, and for over ten years enjoyed working as a hostess at the Bulloch House Restaurant in Warm Springs. She was fun to be around, and was always willing to help anyone in any way she could. Her wonderful personality gained for her many friends; her home was always open and welcoming to those, and to the many friends of her children who regarded her as a "second Mama". Everyone who knew her feels that they have lost a precious soul.

Survivors include her husband, Charles K. Boland, Jr. of Waverly Hall; two sons, Ken Boland and Ernie Boland and his wife Laura all of Ringgold, Ga.; five grandchildren, Shaw Boland, Caroline Boland, Kaleb Boland, Coulter Boland, and McKenzie Boland; a brother, John Weaver of Waverly Hall; three sisters, Sally Sue Jordan and her husband Raines of Talbotton, Ga., Beth Weaver of Columbus, Ga., and Cindy Warren and her husband Mark of St. Louis, Mo.; also several nieces and nephews.

The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted, and asks instead that memorial contributions be made to the Waverly Hall United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 9, Waverly Hall, Ga. 31831.

Loretta Ruth Crane Baker
September 20, 1933 - December 22, 2014
Loretta Ruth Crane Baker, age 81 of Columbus, Ga., a former longtime resident of Waverly Hall, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014 at Gentiva Hospice at Franciscan Woods in Columbus.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Waverly Hall Baptist Church, with Rev. Lee Thompson officiating. A private interment will be held at the Waverly Hall City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Baker was born September 20, 1933 in Mitchelltree Township, Indiana, the daughter of Warner Crane and Angeline Rusher Crane. On November 19, 1950, she married William Melvin "Bill" Baker, and in the late 1950's they moved to Harris County, then to Waverly Hall, where they raised their family and Bill worked as Manager and Foreman of the Storey Dairy business. During the 1960's she worked as a upholsterer and seamstress for the Reeves Cabinet Shop furniture manufacturer in Waverly Hall, helping Mr. L. D. Reeves begin manufacturing a line of baby furniture. In addition, along with her husband and children, the family was early operators of the newly built Morgan Shell gas station when it opened in Waverly Hall. She later worked for West Point Pepperell in West Point, Ga., as well as Haynes Hosiery in LaGrange. In recent years she served as Lunch Room Clerk at Pine Ridge Elementary School in Ellerslie, and for many years she also helped there with the afterschool program. She was a member of Waverly Hall United Methodist Church, where she was a former teacher of the Children's Sunday School Class. In later years she enjoyed reading and television, her favorite books being among her extensive shelves of romance novels and her favorite part of television being channel surfing.

She was preceded in death by a son, Randall Lee "Randy" Baker, a sister Jewell Crane Johnson and two brothers, Paul Crane and Michael Crane. Throughout the years her home was always open and welcoming to her children, grandchildren and their friends. After the death of their son Randy, she and her husband Bill raised Randy's daughter Leslie as their own child.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, William Melvin "Bill" Baker of Columbus, Ga.; a son, William Melvin "Billy" Baker, Jr. and his wife Tora of Ballground, Ga.; two daughters, Lora Jane "Susie" Taft and her husband Charley of Waverly Hall, and Jewell Denise "JD" Miskelley and her husband Steve of Pooler, Ga.; grandchildren, Leslie Fortson and her husband John David of Macon, Ga., Annie Dorrill and her husband Sean of Phenix City, Al., Margie Rodgers and her husband Wes of Oceanside, Ca., Josh Schmidt of Savannah, Ga., Kayla Carroll and her husband Eric of Waverly Hall, Jamie Fincher, Andy Fincher and his wife Amy, and Rusty Fincher, all of Ballground, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Myrna Jones and her husband Terry of Meansville, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Merry Price and Anna Mae Hill; 9 nieces, 5 nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gentiva Hospice, 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway, Columbus, Ga. 31904.

James Ryan Carlisle
January 23, 2015
Rev. James Ryan Carlisle, age 79, of Columbus, Ga., formerly of Manchester, Ga., passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 at Gentiva Hospice in Columbus, Ga.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M., Sunday, January 25, 2015, at County Line Baptist Church, Warm Springs, Ga., with Rev. Bill Strandburg officiating, assisted by Rev. Thad Smith. iIntermentwill follow in Meriwether Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 P.M. at the church

Rev.Carlisle was born August 29, 1935 in Daytona Beach, Duval Co., Florida, the son of Jesse M. Carlisle and Pearl Carlisle. He attended Baptist Bible College, Springfield, MO. and was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was retired as a minister and also retired as a deputy with the Meriwether Co. Sheriff’s office and was a member of the Peace Officers Association. Mr. Carlisle is a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Columbus and was a member of County Line Baptist Church, Warm Springs, Ga. His favorite hobbies were fishing, cutting the grass, eating lobster or fried oysters and studying God’s word. His favorite scripture was Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elsie Lee Adams Carlisle of Columbus, Ga.; two daughters, Sandra Holler and her husband Bruce of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Kathleen Carlisle Mitchell and her husband Larry of Columbus, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, Drew Holler, Brice Holler, Brittney Mitchell, Christopher Mitchell, Kyle Mitchell, Patricia Carlisle, David Carlisle, Alice Carlisle, Christie Carlisle, Jessica Carlisle and 10 great-grandchildren, including PaPa's special little girl, Cloe Garcia. Their common love of dogs was one of their common bonds.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Bruce Carlisle.

Larry H. Elliott
July 13, 1935 - December 20, 2014
Larry Hardage Elliott age 79 of the Cove Community went to be with the Lord Jesus on December 20, 2014.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Cove Baptist Church, with Rev. C. L. "Red" Roberson officiating, assisted by Rev. Jeff Moncrief. iIntermentwill follow in the Cove Baptist Church cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Greg Hobbs, Joe Gordy, Mark Moore, Roland Brown, Bill Bonner, and David Peacock.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury.

Larry was born July 13, 1935 in Thomaston, Ga., the son of Fred Elliott and Kathleen Hardage Elliott. He graduated from Manchester High School and began working in the grocery business. He later owned and operated Elliott's Shell Station in Manchester, and due to health reasons, retired early from working at Georgia Pacific. In past years Larry was a Boy Scout leader, member and officer of the Manchester Jaycees, the Manchester Lions Club, and was in the U. S. Army Reserve. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church and served there as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, and Deacon. After his retirement he and his wife Sheila moved to the Cove Community where he became a member of the Cove Baptist Church and served as a Deacon, church Treasurer, and choir member. He presently was serving on the Thomaston EMC Committee Operation Roundup Program.

Larry was an avid collector of Indian artifacts and was a member of the Central States Archaeological Society. He enjoyed gardening and anything outdoors, and was an active participant in the bi-annual gathering of the Cook-Out Club. Along with his wife, he enjoyed traveling and had visited most of the United States. He was a gentle and caring person who loved the Cove Community, his family, being with people, and most of all his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a solid reminder of the words of poet Edgar Guest, "I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day."

Survivors include his wife, partner and best friend of 56 years, Sheila Bates Elliott; a son Scott Elliott and his wife Tammy Elliott of Manchester; daughter Carol Montgomery and her husband Marvin "Happy" Montgomery of Manchester; three grandchildren, Megan Montgomery of Gainesville, Ga., Matt Montgomery of Dahlonega, Ga., and Zach Elliott of Manchester; a sister, Patricia Presley of Thomaston; brother-in-law Buster Bates and his wife Cheryl of Woodland; brother-in-law Billy Peacock of Manchester; sister-in-law Brenda Bates of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Freddie Peacock.

Flowers will be accepted or those who desire may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Cove Baptist Church.

September 4, 1922 - March 1, 2015
Sarah Huckaby Garner, age 92 of Woodbury, Ga., passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015 at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Jones Chapel with Rev. Bill Lawrence officiating, assisted by Rev. Gary Huckaby and Rev. Allen Stephens. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Rodney Beasley, Timmy Beasley, Ryan Riggins, Robbie Vickery, Mike Harker, and Terry Huckaby.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury.

Mrs. Garner was born September 4, 1922 in the Imlac Community of Meriwether County, Ga., the daughter of Elijah Huckaby and Lula Brown Huckaby. She was a 1941 graduate of Meriwether High School in Woodbury where she excelled in sports as a member of the girl's basketball team. On August 23, 1941 she married Carl Garner, and afterwards devoted her life to being a full time wife and mother. She played an active part in all interests of her children, entertaining them and their friends at her home, and even playing alongside them on the basketball court. She and Carl were among the founders of Flint River Academy, and worked tirelessly in all the early efforts there to raise funds and get the school started. She loved fishing and for many years enjoyed assisting her daughter at Nancy's florist in Woodbury. She was a lifelong member of Jones Chapel and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Carl Garner; two sisters, Nellie McLendon and Thelma Parham; and a brother, Sonny Huckaby.

Survivors include three daughters; Carlene Williams (Billy) of Thomaston, Nancy Riggins (Mitchell) of Molena, and Janice Elliott (Shannon McGahee) of Tybee Island; five grandchildren, Ashley Salter of LaGrange, Jeremy Elliott (Terenca) of Athens, Kristen Elliott of Savannah, Sadie Simmons (Corey) of Easley, SC, and Chelsea Harris (Samuel) of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Salter and Grayson Salter; many very special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews; a special family friend Gene "Skin" Oxford; her longtime caregiver Sally Morman; and a beloved protective Dashund, Scooby.

M. Norman "Preacher Man" Gibbs
November 15, 1928 - January 13, 2015
Miles Norman "Preacher Man" Gibbs, age 86 of Warm Springs, Ga., passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Columbus, Ga.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester, with Rev. Lamar Truitt officiating, assisted by Rev. Bill Strandburg. A private interment will be held at a later time in the Warm Springs City Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Reggie Bridges, John Kierbow, K. W. Arnold, Roland Brown, Judson Reaves, and Jack Tapa.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Gibbs was born November 15, 1928 in Lowell, North Carolina, the son of Miles Logan Gibbs and Millicent Collins Gibbs. He attended Wingate Junior College in Wingate, NC, and was a U. S. Army Veteran, having served in Japan as an instructor in heavy equipment operation. He was a resident of Meriwether County since 1970, and in 1988 retired as an Engineer with CSX Railroad after thirty-four years service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 88 Manchester, and County Line Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and also served as a lifetime Deacon.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Jane Rennison Gibbs of Warm Springs; four daughters, Rebecca Gibbs Fahey (James) of Camden, De., Dawn Gibbs O'Neal (Ronnie) of Warm Springs, Ga., Nancy Gibbs Willard (Jay) of Waverly Hall, Ga., and Heather Gibbs Hall (Matt) of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, Kenneth Gibbs of Shiloh, Ga., and Paul Gibbs (Jeanette) of Gulfport, Ms.; thirteen grandchildren, Derek "Scott" Fahey of Shewsbury, Pa., Summer "Nikki" Seals (Chris) of Hogansville, Ga., Benton Amerson (Ashley) of Kansas City, Mo., Quenton Amerson (Amber) of Woodbury, Ga., Kelly O'Neal Koon (Chris) of Shiloh, Ga, Jody O'Neal Huckaby (Joey) of Warm Springs, Ga., Brea Fahey of New York, NY, Ronnie Gibbs of Gastonia, NC, Brittany Fullen of Atlanta, Ga., Cody Jones of Gulfport, Ms., Tara Fahey Brown (Jerry) of Sacramento, Ca., Jason Willard (Karen) and Justin Willard all of Atlanta; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Barlowe and a niece Beth Barlowe both of Ft. Pierce, Fl.

October 29, 1928 - February 18, 2015
James Drewry “Jughead” Head, Jr., age 86 of Woodbury, Ga. passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 at Woodbury Baptist Church, with Rev. Len Strozier officiating, assisted by Rev. Don Gibbs. iIntermentwill follow in the Woodbury City Cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers; Jim Hendricks, Mike Oxford, Chad Garrett, Cliff Bowles, Jack D. Tinley III, and Chuck Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Moreland, Eddie Calhoun, Billy Hall, Guy Dawson, Sammy Bridges, Charles Wall, Charles Hatchett, Harvey Lemmon, Charles Beckham, Willis Godowns, Frank Fowler, Mike Akins, Larry Colbert, Bobby Smith, Jack D. Tinley, Sr., Jack D. Tinley, Jr., and John H. McClendon, Jr.

Mr. Head was born October 29, 1928, in Griffin, Spalding County, Ga., the son of James Drewry Head, Sr. and Lora Almira Pendley Head. He was a 1945 graduate of Woodbury High School and retired from the Land Department of Georgia Power after 33 years’ service. He was an active member of Woodbury Baptist Church where he had served faithfully for many years as a deacon, as Sunday School Superintendent, and in 2011 was named Deacon Emeritus. He was a Founding Parent of Flint River Academy, was a bus driver there for 9 years, and also served there as the “Chicken-Q Man”. He was a longtime die-hard NASCAR fan, and took his daughters to time trials when the Atlanta International Raceway was new. He was a proud Georgia Tech fan (in a sea of Red & Black); and a lover of crossword puzzles and jumbles. He adored his sweet Lorraine; was a great Daddy for his girls; a devoted Grandpa to Hannah; Cricket’s boon companion; and was a stalwart Woodbury “guy”.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lorraine Lanier Head; two sisters, Martha Jane Head Tinley, Mary Caroline “Tish” Head Stewart; a brother-in-law, George Alvie Stewart; and a nephew, Donald Jefferson Tinley.

Survivors include his two daughters; Candace Joy Head of Woodbury, and Chrissy Faye Head Hendricks and her husband James Franklin Hendricks of Marietta, Ga.; a granddaughter, Hannah Lanier Hendricks of Marietta; a brother-in-law, Jack Dillard Tinley, Sr. of Griffin, Ga.; nephew, Jack Dillard Tinley, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Griffin, Ga.; a niece Mary Jane Stewart and her husband Chuck Cantey of Decatur, Ga.; and his beloved dog Cricket.

March 8, 1932 - February 10, 2015
Mary Eloise Harris, age 82 of Manchester, Ga., passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Manchester, with Rev. Dan Dixon officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers; Jimmy Harris, Luther Harris, Todd Hudson, Fred Carlisle, Keith Carlisle, and Randall Fowler.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday at the church.

Miss Harris was born March 8, 1932 in Meriwether County, Ga., the daughter of George Ralph Harris and Mary Inez Carlisle Harris. She was a graduate of LaGrange College and retired from the Georgia Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation after 40 years service. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Manchester where she had been actively involved in many positions including serving many years as the Sunday School Secretary. She was very active in the United Methodist Women and in 1991 served as Chairperson of the History Committee, working tirelessly to gather information and put together the church history into a book entitled "A Chicken in Every Brick, A History of First United Methodist Church 1911-1991". She enjoyed traveling and photography and, along with her late mother and brother James, they all gave unselfishly of themselves in caring for one another, others, and their entire family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother James Harris, and James' fiance Shirley Parrott.

Survivors include numerous cousins.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to Margaret Mitchell, Mary Howe, Belinda Williams and Deborah Bowles for their love and devotion given in the care of Eloise.
