Mr. Cecil Clay, husband of Opal Carter Clay, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002. Mr. Clay resided in Santee, S.C.
Mr. Clay was born in Cairo, Ga., on April 17, 1916, the son of the late Green M. Clay and Essie Virgina Jordan Clay. He was a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church. He was a retired business manager and member of Sheetmetal Workers #399. He was a graduate of Berry High School, Rome, Ga., and a life member of Harmony Masonic Lodge, Barnwell, S.C., Omar Temple Shrine, a retired secretary and treasurer of Sheetmetal International in Washington, D.C., and was a retired chairman of North Charleston Public Service Commission.
Services were held graveside at Carolina Memorial Park, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, Summerton, S.C. or to Agape Hospice, 226 State St., West Columbia, S.C. 29169.
Survivors include his wife, Open Carter Clay, Santee; a daughter, Maxine Clay, Edisto Beach, S.C.; a brother, James Clay, Cairo, Ga.; a sister, Emily Maxwell, Cairo; grandsons, Clay Ouzts, Simpsonville, S.C., and Carter Cutts, Rockhill, S.C.; and a great-grandson.

Mr. David Johnson, 72, passed away Oct. 13, 2002, in East Orange, N.J.
Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 4, 1930, in Eastman, Ga., Mrs. Lottie H. Johnson, and the late Mr. Earl Johnson Sr. He attended Grady County public schools and was a member of the New Faith Baptist Church, Chester, Pa.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Beulah M.B. Church with the Rev. Dellise Cox officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, Ga.

David was such a joy to his family and was the source of much wholesome humor and mischief. He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Mrs. Lottie Johnson, whom he loved dearly; Mildred H. Johnson, estranged wife; seven brothers, Artis Johnson (Dorothy), Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Earl Johnson Jr. (Gwen), East Orange, Melvin Johnson, Newark, N.J., Norman Johnson (Ophie), Cairo, Nathaniel Johnson (Eva), Cairo, Tommy L. Johnson, Cairo, and Aldon Johnson, Atlanta, Ga.; one beloved sister, Lela P. Johnson, Atlanta; other survivors include, one aunt, Mrs. Laura Johnson Pringle, Atlanta; Juanita L. Johnson, Ft. Mr. Henry Shelley Mash, 71, of 528 Wade Rd., Pelham, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Phoebe Putney Hospital, Albany, Ga.
Mr. Mash was born in Mitchell County, Ga., on Dec. 3, 1930, tot he late Pearl Ivey Johnson and Arthur May Mash. He was married
to Murel Wilkes on March 2, 1957. Mr. Mash was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church, Smith-Spence American Legion Post #144 and was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a retired brick mason.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Braswell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Nathan Fowler and Paul Wilkes officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Pinecrest Memory Gardens.

LILLIAN SMITH

Lillian Norton Smith, age 91, of Columbus, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002 at Pine Manor Nursing Home, Columbus.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Oct. 15, 2002, at Evergreen Memory Gardens, Columbus, according to Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home, Manchester, Ga.
Mrs. Smith was born April 28, 1911, in Grady County, Ga., a daughter of Zaddock E. Norton and Clara G. Palmer Norton. She retired from Kirven’s downtown department store, where she was employed for 27 years as a sales clerk and had worked in the credit office there. She was a member of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church, and for several years, had taught Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Carey Wayne Smith.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Jack Smith of Manchester; two granddaughters, Debbie S. Gibson of Maryville, Tenn., and Becky S. Probus of Manchester; three great grandsons, Bradley Probus and Robert Probus, both of Manchester, and Jonathan Gibson of Maryville; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Tollie Hurst Barrett, 77, passed away at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Tallahassee, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003.
Mrs. Barrett was born in Grady County, Ga., Sept. 23, 1925, to the late Ed and Lula Tuggle Barrett. She was a lifetime resident of Grady County. She was a dedicated homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Cairo, Ga.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Capel Baptist Church, Cairo, at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Ronald Barrett, Mike Nichols and Robert Crapps officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Capel Cemetery, Cairo.

Mr. Frank Corker, 85, of Cairo, Ga., passed away Jan. 27, 2003, at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital, Thomasville, Ga.
Mr. Corker was born in Whigham, Ga., March 1, 1917, to the late Hiram and Mary Corker. He was married
to Elizabeth Bostick in September 1946. Mr. Corker was a lifetime resident of Grady County.
Services were held at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, Cairo, on Feb. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. W.L. Henry officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Crestview Cemetery, Cairo.

Miles Funeral Home of Hazlehurst, Ga., announces the funeral service for Mr. John Elijah Creamer, age 80, of Hazlehurst, who passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in the Jeff Davis Hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in the New Beulah Primitive Baptist Church.
Elder J.E. Griffis, Elder Spencer Fussell, Elder Tommy Roundtree and Elder Manning Temples officiated with burial in the Satilla cemetery in Jeff Davis County.
Mr. Creamer was a native and lifelong resident of Jeff Davis County. He was the son of the late Henry Daniel Creamer and Vinnie Ussery Creamer. He was a construction worker and a member of the New Beulah Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, E. Juanita Creamer, Lumber City, Ga.; six daughters, Mary J. Harper, Chrystal Pandorf and Mary A. Simmons, all of Clearwater, Fla., Ann M. Cordes and Bonnie S. Bernard, both of Valdosta, Ga., and Katherine R. Creamer, Hazlehurst; a son, John I. Creamer, Largo, Fla.; a sister, Mamie L. Hewett, Cairo, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Nell Bishop Hatcher, 81, of Baconton, Ga., passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Brian Center in Thomasville, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Springhill Freewill Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Bruce Gordon and Rev. Ronnie Ross officiated.
Born Dec. 2, 1921, in Grady County, Ga., Mrs. Hatcher was a homemaker and a member of Springhill Freewill Baptist Church. She was married
to the late Noah J. Hatcher and was the daughter of the late Will H. and Armelia Knight Bishop.
Survivors include two sons, W.J. “Dub” Hatcher, Baconton and Jimmy Hatcher, and wife, Vonnie, of Camilla, Ga.; three sisters, Frances B. Hatcher, Baconton, Inez B. Thomas, Cairo, Ga., and Sara Vonceil Palmer, Bainbridge, Ga.; a brother, J.E.
