Mrs. Leonia Barfield Roland, 86, passed away in Greensboro, N.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Wesley Long Hospital.
Mrs. Roland was born in Vada, Ga., Aug. 31, 1918, to the late Tom and Kate Barfield. She was married
to Eugene C. Roland, who preceded her in death March 27, 1976. Mrs. Roland was currently residing in Colfax, N.C. She was a dedicated homemaker and a member of First Freewill Baptist Church, Cairo, Ga.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at First Freewill Baptist Church, Cairo, with the Rev. W.G. Turner officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Cairo Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Kevin Harrell, Bobby Hancock, Mike Coleman, Jimmy Womble, Walter Maxwell and Ronnie Widener.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Vonnie R. and Dennis Ray Beeson, Colfax, N.C.; a sister, Janie Willis, Cairo; grandchildren, Chris Beeson, Kernersville, N.C. and Scott Beeson, Colfax; and great-grandchildren, Emily Beeson and Courtney Beeson, both of Kernersville.

FLORA RUST
March 7, 1908 - Sept. 20, 2004
Mrs. Flora Blevins Rust passed away Sept. 20, 2004, in Whigham, Ga.
Mrs. Rust was born March 7, 1908, in Johnson County, Ky., in the town of Paintsville, to the late Soloman Blevins and Susan Alice LeMasters. She was married
to Enoch R. Rust in Titusville, Fla., on May 29, 1958. He preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 1969. Mrs. Rust had lived in the south Georgia area for approximately 11 years. She was a member of Jehovah’s Witness.
Services were held in San Jose Burial Park cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Overbeck, Cairo, Ga.; a son, Roy V. Conner Jr., Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Emmy Adkins, Paintsville; and several grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rust was also preceded in death by a son, James E. Rust.

Mr. Clarence Eugene “Tom” Thomas Jr., 33, of 1059 Spence Road, Pelham, Ga., passed away Sept. 22, 2004, in Mitchell County, Ga.
Mr. Thomas was born in Albany, Ga., March 12, 1971, to Beverly Thomas of Marianna, Fla. and C.E. “Buddy’ Thomas Sr. of Newton, Ga. He was married
to Stephanie Teets on June 22, 1996. Mr. Thomas was the manager of the Hopeful Farm Center, Hopeful, Ga. he was a member of the First Methodist Church of Marianna, Fla.
Services were held on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at 6 p.m. at Braswell Funeral Home Chapel, Pelham, Ga., with the Rev. William Connell officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Robert Howell, Daniel Newberry, Jeff Givens, Justin Danley, Kevin Peacock and Cliff Akridge.

JOHNNY WADSWORTH

Mr. John Hiram (Johnny) Wadsworth, 63, passed away September 22, 2004, at his place of residence.
Mr. Wadsworth was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Before his decline in health, he loved to make and share handcrafts and leather workings. He also loved to fish. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Redfarn, stepfather, Jimmy Redfarn and father, Hiram Wadsworth.
Services were held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Cairo, on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Mike Nichols officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Greg Connell, Dexter Edenfield, Craig Collins, Mark Ponder, Butch Reagan and Bobby Woodell.

Mr. Luther “Luke” Lamar Walden Sr., 81, passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Whigham, Ga.
Mr. Walden was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Grady County, Ga., to the late William Robert and Carrie Bell Walden. He served in the U.S. Army, was retired owner of a bait and tackle business and a member of Midway Baptist Church, Cairo.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, with Rev. Chad Cantrell officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo.

Mr. Bodiford was born in Grady County, Ga., Feb. 8, 1937, to the late Melvin Troy and Myrtice Morris Bodiford. He was married
to Ollie Kate Davis Bodiford. Mr. Bodiford was retired from the City of Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Cairo First Freewill Baptist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, with the Rev. Keith Pearson officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenwood Cemetery.

ERMIS BROOKINS

Mr. Ermis H. Brookins, 78, of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away at his home on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005.
Born on Oct. 20, 1926, in Dothan, Ala., he was the owner of Brookins Nursery in Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Brookins was a World War II veteran, serving his country in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a past president of the FNGA and was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Brookins was formerly an active member of Southside Estates Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Brookins; brothers, Hugh, Fay, Ernest and Billy Brookins, and a sister, Nell Singletary Barrett.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Joyce Lee Brookins; sons, Harold Lee Brookins (Pat), Jacksonville Beach, Fla. and Bret Nolan Brookins, Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Brenda Brookins Hood Adair, Jacksonville; a brother, Jimmy Brookins (Mildred), Green Cove Springs, Fla., sisters, Iris Launa Brookins, Dunedin, Fla., Linda Brookins Wells, Cairo, Ga., and Faye Knowles, Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Mill Creek Baptist Church, St. Augustine, on Wednesday, January 19, with Rev. Donald T. Ramsey and Dr. Jimmy Brookins officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenlawn Cemetery, Jacksonville.

GONEZ FERRELL

Mrs. Gonez Singletary Ferrell, 93, of Cairo, Ga., passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital, Thomasville, Ga., on Jan. 13, 2005.
Mrs. Ferrell was born in Grady County, Ga., Nov. 1, 1911 to the late Oscar and Bama Drew Singletary. She was married
to Grady Wade, who preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1942. She was later married
to John Morgan Ferrell, who preceded her in death on March 3, 1990. Mrs. Ferrell was a lifetime resident of the Grady County area. She worked as a clerk at Cairo Firestone Store, and later as a nurse aide in Thomasville. She was a member of the Bold Springs United Methodist Church and attended the Eastside Baptist Church in Cairo, with her daughter.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, graveside in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Thomasville, Ga. The Rev. Wayne Burdeshaw and Dr. Paul Jones officiated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eastside Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 749, Cairo, Ga. 39828 or to a favorite charity.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Hubert Chambers, Cairo; a grandson, Ed Green Chambers, Fitzgerald, Ga.; a sister, Agnes S. Williams, Cairo; and a niece, Marilyn Joyner, Cairo.

WILMON (SNOOKS) GREEN
Nov. 3, 1923 - Jan. 13, 2005
Mr. Wilmon R. (Snooks) Green, 81, of Cairo, Ga., passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at his place of residence.
Mr. Green was born in Cairo on Nov. 3, 1923, to the late William N. and Effie Lee Owens Green. He was a lifetime resident of Cairo. He retired Dec. 31, 2004 as Sheriff of Grady County after serving two terms in office. Before becoming sheriff, he was a bus driver for the Grady County Board of Education. Mr. Green was a member of the American Legion Post 122, the VFW, and the Georgia Sheriff Association. He was the oldest person to ever graduate from the Georgia Law Enforcement Academy, and he was the oldest elected sheriff in Georgia when he took his oath of office in 1996. Mr. Green served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Cairo.
Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Cairo, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. John Paul Hasick officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Cairo Cemetery, Cairo.
Active pallbearers were Kenneth Green, Edward Green, Buz Green, Raymond Greene, William Owens and Jimmy Douglas.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men’s Sunday School Class at Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Burt Horton, Marcus Pearce, all Grady County Law Enforcement personnel, Bill Adams, Carlton Powell, Wayne Bonner and Wayne Tootle.

July 24, 1943, Cairo; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Green, Cairo; granddaughters, Missy Morton and husband, Gary, Arcadia, Fla., Kimberly Crapps and husband, Ben, Thomasville, Ga., Ginny Hopper and husband, Ed, Thomasville, and Laren Green, who is a senior at the University of Georgia, Athens; great-grandchildren, Kendall Morton, Arcadia, and Jake Crapps, Thomasville; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Green was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William Floyd Green and a sister, Louise Green.
