Mr. Ira Thomas, 69, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2005, at the Glen-Mor Nursing Home, Thomasville, Ga., following an extended illness.
Mr. Thomas was born on April 30, 1936, in Thomas County, Ga., to the late Joe and Edith Thomas. He attended Thomas County Schools and a school for the blind in Atlanta, Ga. He resided in Cairo, Ga., and was a member of the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Cairo.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Saint Thomas Primitive Baptist Church, Cairo, with Elder Daryl Harrison officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Crestview Cemetery, Cairo.
Pallbearers were Willie Williams, Hansel Willis, Sheldon Webb and Rasheed Hayes.
Survivors include: sister, Hattie Mae Thomas Pugh, West Palm Beach, Fla.; nephews, Woodrow D. Pugh and Ronald (Joyce) Pugh, all of West Palm Beach; Nieces, Avia Pugh, Angela Pugh and Ronika Pugh, all of West Palm Beach; devoted cousin, Barbara (Willie) Jackson, Thomasville; friend, Mrs. W. B. Mango; and a host of loving cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mammie Thomas and Mary Thomas Brown.

Bessie Turner
May 8, 1928 - May 7, 2005
Mrs. Bessie Hines Turner, 76, passed away on May 7, 2005, at the Big Bend Hospice House, Tallahassee, Fla.
Mrs. Turner was born on May 8, 1928, in Mitchell County, Ga., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hines. She was educated in Mitchell County schools.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Friendship House of Prayer with Elder Ruben Addison officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Crestview Cemetery, Cairo, Ga.
Pallbearers were friends of the family.
Survivors include: daughters, Mary Hines, Jacksonville, Fla., and Betty Tyler, Cairo; son, Willie C. Hines, Cairo; brother, Artic C. Hines, Pelham, Ga.; sister, Charlie Mae Hopkins, Camilla, Ga.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Hines.

John Walker
October 2, 1919 - May 12, 2005
Mr. John Wyeth Walker, 85, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Ga.
Mr. Walker was born on October 2, 1919, in Cairo, Ga., to the late William Albert and Eva Hall Walker. He attended Cairo High School and was graduated from Georgia Tech in 1940, beginning then in the Light and Water Dept. what would be a long career with the city of Cairo. His chosen career was interrupted for service in World War II, first as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army and then as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade, in the U.S. Navy. After WWII, he returned to Cairo and worked with the city for 38 more years, rising to the post of City Manager which he held for 19 years until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1982. Among his many accomplishments were the designs for both the Christmas canopy of lights still in use, and the assembly line process for fabricating the original lights. Mr. Walker was President of the Georgia Municipal Association for several years. The Grady County/Cairo Chamber of Commerce awarded him its Community Service Award in 1982, and the city of Cairo honored him by dedicating a city park on North Broad Street in his name.
Services were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, Cairo, Ga., with the Rev. Richard Soper and Mr. Tom Lehman officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the Cairo Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Stallings, Wyman Richter, Willard Chason, Buddy Childs, Bob Lashley, John Wallace and Kenneth Thrash.

r. Lloyd F. Baldwin, 90, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2005, in Thomasville, Ga.
Mr. Baldwin was born Aug. 25, 1914, in Ashland County, Ohio, to the late Bruce and Lettie Smith Baldwin. He retired in 1995 as office manager with Taylor Hydraulics. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a mason, member of Lodge #299 F&AM for over 50 years, Cairo Shrine Club, Hassan Shrine Temple, Albany, Ga., and a Scottish Rite Mason.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, Ga., with the Rev. Richard Soper and the Rev. John Paul Hasick officiating. iIntermentfollows at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, with Masonic rites.
Active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are Masons.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Clark Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Grace Elrod Bishop, 80, passed away Monday, July 18, 2005, at Grady General Hospital, Cairo, Ga.
Mrs. Bishop was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Grady County, Ga., to the late Levi Roy and Callie Willis Elrod. She was married
to Marvin H. Bishop, who preceded her in death Oct. 7, 2003. Mrs. Bishop was a lifetime resident of Grady County. She was a dedicated homemaker and a member of Living Hope Faith Center, Cairo.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Family Worship Center, Cairo, with Pastor Johnny Moore and Pastor Steve Singletary officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo.
Active pallbearers were Art Rash, Craig Singletary, Philip Palmer, Bill Thompson, Steve Collins and Houston Thompson.

Mrs. Bishop was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Janice Yvonne Bishop; a grandson, Chip Bishop; brothers, David, Clyde and Eugene Elrod; and sisters, Lois Baggerly, Thelma Elrod and Betty Barrineau.

WINIFRED BRANNON

Mrs. Winifred Holland Brannon, 86, of Valdosta, Ga., passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at her residence. Mrs. Brannon was born in Moultrie, Ga., to the late Allen Lester Holland and Joy Shierling Holland. She was a bridal consultant, a member of First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Merry Makers Sunday School Class.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joy W. and Larry Barber of Tallahassee, Fla., two sons and one daughter-in-law, George W. Brannon and John and Julie Brannon, all of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Kevin Brannon, Todd Barber, Katie Barber and Amy Barber; one great-grandchild, Clayton Barber; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Remer L. Holland, Bradenton, Fla., James R. and Betty Holland, Athens, Ga., and Hoyt L. and Faye Holland, Moultrie, Ga.; and a lifelong friend, Viola Neff, Cairo, Ga. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Wight Brannon.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial followed in Cairo.

MERRIOM GORDON
July 27, 1928 - July 9, 2005
Elder Merriom Gordon, 76, passed away July 9, 2005, at Archbold Memorial Hospital, Thomasville, Ga.
Elder Gordon was born July 27, 1928, in Decatur County, Ga., to the late Rev. and Mrs. C.D. Dennis. She attended Decatur County public schools and was a member of Gordon and Sanders Temple of Havana, Fla.
She confessed Christ and became a born again Christian. She was a devoted pastor of Gordon and Sanders Temple in Havana, Florida. She served faithfully until she heard the Lord say, “Come home my good and faithful servant.”
Merriom Gordon always said, “Through God all things are possible.”
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Macedonia M.B. Church with Elder Leroy Williams officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Crestview Cemetery, Cairo.
Active pallbearers were Dennis Jones, James Carter, Charles Mitchell, Thomas Brenton, Joe White and Cedric Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted husband, Arthur Gordon Sr., Cairo, Ga.; three daughters, Mary Siler (Arthur), Reatha Mitchell (Charles) and Shirley Stewart, all of Cairo, Ga.; four sons, Arthur Gordon Jr., Thomasville, Ga., Billy Gordon, Cairo, Willie Gordon, Whigham, Ga., and Ronnie Gordon (Cynthia), Cairo; two sisters, Miriam Jones and Queen Esther Carpenter, both of Cairo.
Merriom (called by her grandchildren, “Granny”) leaves behind 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, church members and friends.

June 9, 1925 - July 12, 2005
Mr. Lines King, 80, of 415 6th Ave., S.E., Cairo, Ga., passed away July 12, 2005, at Pine Wood Nursing Center, Whigham, Ga., following a brief illness.
Mr. King was born in Grady County, Ga., June 9, 1925, to the late Tommy and Rosa King. He was a lifetime resident of Grady County and was a cement worker.
Services were held at Beautiful Light Missionary Baptist Church, Cairo, Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Herman Davis officiating. iIntermentwas held at Crestview Cemetery, Cairo.
Active pallbearers were nephews and family friends.
Survivors include sisters, Frances King and Dora King, both of Cairo, and Virginia King, Bertha King and Rosa (J.D.) Bozman, all of Rochester, N.Y.; special friend, Estella Baker, Cairo; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.

TOMMIE MOBLEY
Jan. 15, 1924 - July 13, 2005
Mr. Tommie Mobley, 81, of Silver Spring, Md., passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2005, at Fairlane Nursing Home, Silver Spring.
Mr. Mobley served 22 years in the U.S. Army, later retiring from both the Armed Services and U.S. Postal Service.
Born January 15, 1924, in Cairo, Ga., to the late Alice Brown Mobley and Tommie Mobley, he was a dedicated family man.
Services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2005, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. iIntermentwill be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington. He was a member of Wilson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Cairo.
Survivors include a devoted wife, Willie Mae; daughter, Dorothy Mobley Cannon, Apopka, Fla.; stepdaughters, Mildred Peay, Joan Dempsey, Casandra Mark, Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
