Mr. James Howard Paramore, 74, of Clementon, N.J., formerly of Grady County, Ga., passed away, July 8, 2005, at a Camden, N.J., hospital.
Mr. Paramore was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Grady County, Ga., to the late J.C. and Mary Lois Paramore. He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Paulsboro, N.J. He was a retired, certified mechanic for the Greyhound Bus Company and owner of JEP Used Auto Sales, Clementon.
Services were held Saturday, July 16, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary African Methodist Church, Climax, Ga., with Elder King C. Paramore, Elder Ruben Addison, the Rev. Michael Perry and the Rev. Ronald Williams officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Conyers Cemetery, Climax.

CHRISTINE POWELL
Aug. 14, 1934 - July 15, 2005
Mrs. Christine G. Powell, 70, passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at her place of residence, Cairo, Ga.
Mrs. Powell was born in Germany on Aug. 14, 1934, to the late Ludwig and Erna Koch Rumpf. She was married
to Larry Richard Powell, who preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Powell was a dedicated homemaker and a member of the Cairo Church of God.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2005, at Cairo Church of God, with the Rev. Dewayne Atkinson officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo.

LOUIS ROTHMAN
March 3, 1917 - July 14, 2005
Mr. Louis Rothman, 88, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2005, in Grady County, Ga.
Mr. Rothman was born March 3, 1917, in New York City, N.Y., to the late Abraham and Bertha Abramowitz Rothman. He was currently residing in Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Rothman was a plumber for various contractors and inspector for cities of North Miami and Miami Beach, Fla. Mr. Rothman served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery from 1944-1946. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 519, Miami.
A private family memorial service will be held at the son’s home, William R. Rothman, in Monticello, Fla., at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Anne Rothman, whom he married
in December 1940, Tallahassee; son, William R. Rothman and wife, Katharine, Monticello; daughter, Anna Louise Rothman, Orlando, Fla.; granddaughter, Emily R. Rothman, Monticello, Fla., brother, Frank Rothman, Los Angeles, Calif.; sister-in-law, Merle Honroth, Phoenix, Ariz.; and brother-in-law, Dawson Norman, Tarpon Springs, Fla.

ALTON SMITH
July 13, 2005
Mr. Alton C. Smith, 73, a retiree of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Postal Service, passed away July 13, 2005, at his place of residence in Whigham, Ga.
Mr. Smith loved to fish and proudly served his country.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on July 15, 2005, at Bold Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Cairo, Ga., with the Rev. Rodney Porter officiating. Mr. Smith was buried in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by Moody AFB Honor Guard Team, Valdosta, Ga.
Survivors include sons, Michael Smith, Centerville, Ga., Randy Smith, Macon, Ga., and Al Smith, Bolingbroke, Ga.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Riley, Cairo; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, J.W. and Pearl Watson and parents, Carl and Ollie Singletary Smith.

SARAH USSERY
Feb. 16 1920 - July 3, 2005
The Rev. Sarah Ussery, 85, of Rochester, N.Y., formerly of Cairo, Ga., passed away July 3, 2005, in Rochester following a brief illness.
The Rev. Ussery was born in Grady County, Ga., Feb. 16, 1920, to the late Jack and Alberta Hall Mathis. She was married
to Ned Ussery, who preceded her in death. She attended Grady County public schools. The Rev. Ussery was a minister and a member of Praying Healing Temple, Rochester.
Services were held at the Chapel of Cloud and Son Funeral Home, Cairo, on Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Marvin Thompson officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Peaceful Rest Cemetery, Thomasville, Ga.
Active pallbearers included friends of the family.
Survivors include sisters, Retha Ricks, Thomasville, Ga., and Janie M. Mr. J.R. Broomfield, 60, passed away at his residence on Aug. 13, 2005.
Mr. Broomfield was born Jan. 2, 1945. He was a member of St. Calvary M.B. Church.

Survivors include a loving wife of 43 years, Charlie Mae Broomfield; four daughters, Janice Hines (James) of Havana, Fla.; Daniell Williams (Kevin) of Cairo; Carol Ann Wimberly (Vick) of Cairo; and Jessie Merle Broomfield, who preceded him in death; four sons: Freddie Broomfield (Carolyn), Claude Broomfield (Donna) and Douglas Broomfield (Dorothy), all of Cairo, and Isaac Jones of Tallahassee, Fla; three sisters: Betty Giles, Annie Morris and Mary Turner, all of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two stepsisters: Gail Morgan and Elosie Morgan; five brothers: James Broomfield, R.J. Broomfield of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Jerry Broomfield, Robert Broomfield and Willie Morgan, Jr., who preceded him death; a loving mother-in-law, Mary Frances McClendon of Cairo; two aunts: Lizzie Walker, Lakeland, Fla., Annie Redding of Alabama; nine sisters-in-law, 10 brothers-in-law, 26 grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and lots of cousins and friends. Mr. George William (Buddy) Dyous passed away at Grady General Hospital, Cairo, Ga., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005.
Mr. Dyous was born in Grady County, Ga., April 25, 1952, to Mr. William Samuel Dyous of Whigham, Ga., and the late Rosa Barfield Dyous. He served in the U.S. Army, was of the Baptist faith and was employed by the city of Cairo.
Visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, Aug. 24, 2005, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, with the Rev. Johnny Moore officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Whigham.

Mr. Devous Evans Jr., 48, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Grady General Hospital, Cairo, Ga.
Mr. Evans was born March 4, 1957, in Grady County, Ga., to Mrs. Annie Lee Evans and the late Mr. Devous Evans Sr. He attended Grady County public schools and was a member of the St. Clair P.B. Church.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Wilson Chapel M.B. Church with Elder Jimmy Simmons officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Crestview Cemetery, Cairo.

JOSEPH HARVEY JR.
Feb. 24, 1929 - Aug. 18, 2005
A memorial service for Joseph Hillman Harvey Jr., 76, of Sea Island, Ga., legendary founder of the Harvey’s supermarket chain, was held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Strickland Memorial Auditorium at Epworth-by-the-sea, St. Simons Island, with Bishop B. Michael Watson, the Revs. Dr. Charles Adams, Jim Rush and Bob Bearley officiating.
Private burial was held in the Brumley Family cemetery on Wadmalaw Island, S.C.

Mr. Harvey died at his residence on Sea Island, Ga., Aug. 18, 2005, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Nashville, Ga., he began working in his father’s store at the age of five, and helped found the J.H. Harvey Company, Inc., in 1950. Following his graduation from college, he returned to the family business and became secretary of the company at the age of 21. In 1980, he became president and CEO of the company, and was made chairman of the board in 1989. In 2003, Harvey negotiated the sale of the company to Delhaize Group, but continued to be involved in a lesser role. Always promoting the company motto of “The friendliest store in town, ” he personally appeared at all store openings to greet customers as long as his health permitted. In 2004, Mercer University in Macon awarded Harvey an honorary degree of commerce in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the food industry in Georgia.
Harvey’s presently operates 66 stores, including one in Cairo, and employs approximately 3, 500 team members in Georgia and Florida.
Harvey was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and chairman of the board of Epworth-by-the-Sea on St. Simons Island.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Martha Brumley Harvey; three daughters, Barbara Harvey Wiseman of Swainsboro, Patricia Harvey Robinson of Camilla, and Elizabeth Smith Rule of Charlotte, N.C.; four sons, Joseph Hillman Harvey III of Nashville, William Tyler Harvey of Adel, Brumley Smith of Wichita, Kan., and Warner Smith of Dublin; a sister, Iris Harvey Smith of Cairo; 21 grandchildren; and other relatives.
