Johnny Blalock
Resident of Athens, Ga.,
survived by family
Johnny Lee Blalock, 41, of Athens, Ga., formerly of Oak Ridge, died on July 25, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born in Oak Ridge to parents J.L. and Louise Rigsby Blalock on Oct. 31, 1961. Blalock was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law Randall and Brenda Blalock of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mike S. and Gaile Blalock of Spring City, Tenn.; sisters and brother-in-law Sharon and Roger Begley of Oak Ridge, and Nancy Jane Sheppard of Rome, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Ray Buchanan officiating. Another funeral service was held July 30 at the Croft Chapel cemetery in Turtletown, Tenn. at 11 a.m. iIntermentwas at Croft Chapel cemetery.
Weatherford Mortuary of Oak Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.
Thelma Quintrell
Survived by family,
Native of Fannin County
Thelma Quintrell, 84, of Bel Air, Md. died at the Country View Assisted Living on July 29, 2003. Born Aug. 30, 1918, in Fannin County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Mexico Parris.
She was the wife of the late Bill Quintrell; mother of Wallace N. and his wife Kristen Quintrell of Bel Air; grandmother of Anneliese and her husband Stuart Simms Jr. of Havre de Grace; sister of Helen Davis, Willie Johnson and Delma Galloway all of Fannin County. Also survived by adopted son, Tony Quintrell of Tennessee.
A memorial service will be held at the Emanuel Episcopal Church on Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. Arrangements were by Evans Funeral Home Chapel, Bel Air.
Jo Ann Waits
Native of McCaysville member of Methodist faith Jo Ann Waits, 64, of Covington, Ga., died Sept. 9, 2003. She had lived in the Atlanta area for the past 46 years but was a native of McCaysville and a member of the McCaysville United Methodist Church in Harpertown.
She was a daughter of Ernest Davis and the late Ruth Ledford Davis of McCaysville.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Jeff (Susan) Waits of Covington, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Joyce) Waits of Loganville, Ga.; father Ernest Davis of McCaysville, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Doug (Linda) Ross of Cohutta, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn (Judy) Buchanan of Copperhill, Tenn.; brothers and sisters-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Billy (Ruth) Davis of Conyers, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby (Carolyn) Davis of Riverdale, Ga.; and granddaughter Katelyn Waits.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 11, at the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons with the Rev. Lawrence Lockett officiating. Pallbearers included Joey Buchanan, Keith Davis, Alan Davis, Jim Heaton, Dan (Sonny) Dilbeck and Jackie Waits.
James Burnette
Masonic Lodge member, member of Baptist faith
James “Jim” Burnette, 84, died Jan. 30, 2004, at his home in Blue Ridge. Burnette had lived most of his life in this area, and after 38 years, retired from the Jones Vending Company. He was a member and a deacon of the O’Zion Baptist Church and a member of the Blue Ridge Masonic Lodge.
Burnette was preceded in death by his grandson Chad Mashburn.
Survivors include his wife Beedie Stewart Burnette of the home; son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Rachel Burnette of Blue Ridge; daughters and son-in-law Judy Moore and Joan and Larry Mashburn, all of Blue Ridge; granddaughters Tammy Sisson, Jo Jo Queen, Jennifer Jacobs and Renee Mashburn; grandson Jamey Burnette; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 1 in the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. J.D. Thomas officiating. Music was provided by Rachel Callihan, Megan Martin and Rhonda Jacobs.
Pallbearers included Steve Towe, Gary Stewart, Larry Mashburn, Steve Stewart, William Stewart and Glen Davenport. Honorary pallbearers included Alfred Davenport and Roger Thrasher.
iIntermentfollowed in the O’Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

John Jones
Fannin County native, avid hunter and fisherman
John Wesley Jones, 94, of Jacks River, died Jan. 30, 2004, at his home.
Jones was born in Fannin County to the late John Timothy and Linda Mineriva Patterson Jones. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church (Jacks River). He was retired from the timber industry and 25 years as a school bus driver for the Fannin County School System.
Jones was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by a grandson Master David Jones, 22 months.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years Cora Davenport Jones of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law James Jones of Blue Ridge, Richard and Shirley Jones, and Herdis and Sue Jones, all of Epworth; daughters and sons-in-law Gladys and Orlin Bell of Blue Ridge, Myrtle and L.H. Hallum of Scottsmoor, Fla., and Ida Watkins of Epworth; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge with the Rev. Delmar Davenport and Rev. Glen Collis officiating. Music was by Brenda Millsaps.
Pallbearers were Herdis Jones, Roger Jones, Richard Jones, Phil Jones, Bradley Watkins and L.H. Hallum. iIntermentfollowed in the Jones Cemetery.

Joseph Cole
U.S. Navy veteran, worked as electrician
Joseph Burton Cole, 83, of Blue Ridge, died Jan. 24, 2004, at his residence.
Cole was retired from the Cities Service Co., having worked as an electrician in the flotation plant for a number of years, and was a member of Sunrise Tabernacle. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife Ester Nama Couch Cole.
Survivors include daughters Lois White, Lorene Rhodes, and Ruth Ann Franklin all of Blue Ridge, and Joann Arp of Morganton; sons Melvin Cole, Elbie Cole, and James Cole all of Blue Ridge; sisters Jean Stepp of Blue Ridge and Emma Lou Rhodes of Marietta, Ga.; brother, J.T. Cole of Akron, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. from Sunrise Tabernacle with the Rev. Roy Clore officiating. Music was by Jean Stepp, Robert Stepp and Teresa Stepp, Elvin and Diane White, and James and Betty Cole. Pallbearers were Harold Rhodes, Ronald Rhodes, Rex Cole, Chris Cole, Terry White and Elvin White.
Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Davenport, Jeff Cook, Charlie Couch, Anthony Ballew, Perry Ledford, William Rhodes, and Danny Davenport.
iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery with military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard.

Jackson Plemmons
U.S. Navy veteran, of the Baptist faith
Jackson Lee Plemmons, 76, of Blairsville, formerly of McCaysville, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, in the Beverly Health Care Center-Northside, following an extended illness.
Plemmons was born on May 1, 1927, in Copperhill, Tenn., the son of the late Tom Plemmons and the late Sally Fain Plemmons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy of World War II. He was a building contractor before his retirement. Plemmons was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Kevin Plemmons of Canton, Ga., Scott and Debbie Plemmons of Cumming, Ga.; sister Marie Scholes of McCaysville and Faye Jarvis of Lansdale, Pa.; grandchildren Pamela Plemmons of Cumming, Jason Plemmons of Cumming, Josh Plemmons of Canton; many other relatives and friends also survive.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Hubert Legg officiating.
Music was presented by Hubert and Betty Legg.
In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family request that memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation in Plemmons’ memory.

Ruby Cabrera
Cleveland, Tenn. resident, member of Baptist faith
Ruby Stepp Cabrera, 85, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., died March 18, 2004, at the family residence.
She was the daughter of the late Elsie Early Stepp and Everett Stepp. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman Jefferson Cabrera; granddaughter Christian Cabrera; son-in-law Paul Patterson; and brothers Elmer Stepp, Vernon Stepp and George Stepp.
Cabrera was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Berdie Patterson and Kathy Lee, both of Cleveland; sons and daughters-in-law James and Betty Cabrera, Jeff and Louise Cabrera, Billy Cabrera, Eugene and Opaline Cabrera, and Franklin Cabrera, all of Cleveland, Jesse and Pamela Cabrera of Bolton, Conn., and Thomas and Rhonda Cabrera of Cleveland; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Rosie Chastain of Cleveland, Margaret Ray of Mineral Bluff, Gail Dodd of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Tressie Hayes of Carrolton, Ga., Betty Turner of Atlanta, and Ida Sue Postell and Vestella Graham, both of Blue Ridge; brothers Earl Stepp of Texas and C.L. Stepp of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held March 20 at 2 p.m. from the Wildwood Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes with the Rev. Ray Higgins and the Rev. Daniel White officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers included Tony Cabrera, Freddy Patterson, Timmy Patterson, Mitch Cabrera, Trey Lassiter, Josh Cabrera, Gene Cabrera Jr., Jeff Cabrera and Mark Cabrera.
The family request memorials be made to the St. Jude’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105, Attention: Memorial Department.
Hazel Griswold
School teacher, housewife
Hazel Griswold, 83, died at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2004, after an extended illness in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Born at Cooper Creek in Fannin County on Sept. 30, 1920, to Allen “Golie” Goleman and Della Walker Edmondson Goleman, Griswold spent most of her life there.
Her children are Doris L. Fortenberry Martin and husband Jim, Joyce Fortenberry Tenkotte and husband David, Donna Fortenberry Weiler, George A. Griswold and wife Karen, and Gary L. Griswold and wife Cathy.
Grandchildren are Brad Martin, John Tenkotte, Terry and Clay King, Sarah Kuss, Jeremiah, Michael, Laura, Emily Griswold and Amanda Griswold.
Survivors also include are nine great-grandchildren; brother Hubert Edmondson; sisters Dorothy Garrison and Gerald (and husband Tom) Johnson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
During World War II, Griswold worked at the Bell Bomber Plant at Marietta, Ga. helping to build B-29 aircraft. She also worked as school teacher at the old Cooper Creek Church school.
In Little Rock, Ark., she worked for Avon and was a sales clerk, but most of her time was as a housewife taking care of her family.
She was married
to Glenn C. Griswold of White Hall, Ill. in 1953, and moved to Little Rock, Ark. In 1961 they went to Cincinnati, Ohio. They then moved back to Fannin County in 1973. She was preceded in death by Glenn in 1988.
For many years she would faithfully attend various family reunions of the Walker, Woody and Edmondson lines.
In November 2002 after a hip fracture, she was brought back to Cincinnati to be close to her children.
She will be missed greatly by friends and family and it can be said that she was truly a good woman.
