Otto Walters
Avid sailor, photographer and artist, taught skiing
Otto Walters, 88, a part-time resident of Morganton, died July 18, 2005.
He was born in Switzerland and graduated from college before coming to the United States.
He joined the Army and served with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. Before going into combat in Italy where he was wounded, he taught skiing at Camp Hale in Colorado.
After the service, he was head of the Foreign Exchange Department at the Belgian American Bank in New York City before leaving to attend the Art Students League in New York City.
A resident of Sarasota, Fla., since 1969, Walters became a photographer and artist working for the Sarasota Scene magazine and Channel 13 as well as free-lancing. He produced several documentaries. Several of his works have been on exhibit at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts.
An avid sailor, he was a longtime member of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and enjoyed boating on Blue Ridge Lake.
Walters was a member of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association and the Fannin Friends of the Library.
Survivors include his wife Dora and family pets Yenta, Mr. K., Buddha and Mickey.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Fannin Friends of the Library or a Humane Society of your choice.

Gordon Jones
World War II veteran, coach for 35 years
Gordon E. Jones (Coach Jones), 81, of Tucker, Ga., died July 13, 2005.
A native of McCaysville, he was a coach for 35 years including Ringgold, Trion and most recently Tucker High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Tucker Optimist Club, Tucker First Baptist Church and also attended Bethany Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years Jean Jones of Tucker; daughter and son-in-law Candi and John Barnette of Watkinsville, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law Jerry and Amy Jones and Sid and Leslie Jones, all of Lilburn, Ga.; grandchildren Cliff Barnette, Brittanie Barnette, Chase Jones, Taylor Masters, Casey Jones, Halley Jones, Ryan Jones, Reese Urdialez and Tyler Jones; sisters Exie Gibbs of Atlanta and Eva Lou Boling of McCaysville; and brother William Jones of Westminster, Ga.
Funeral services were held July 16, at 11 a.m. in the Tucker First Baptist Church with Elder Wayne Peters and Elder Lonnie Mozingo officiating.
The family requests contributions be made in his memory to the Gordon E. Jones Education Scholarship Fund, 1060 Wetherburn Way, Watkinsville, Ga., 30677.
Michael Bush
Decorated Vietnam War veteran, active in church
Michael Lynn Bush, 59, of Morganton, died July 17, 2005.
Born in Muscogee County, Ga., he was preceded in death by his parents Johnnie H. Bush and Doris Ruth Young Bush.
He had worked as a machinist for the Philip Morris Brewery.
Bush was a member and on the Board of Advisors for the Evangel Temple Assembly of God; he was very active in the church performing with his guitar, operating the sound system in the church, and writing and printing the service bulletins.
He was a member of the NRA and was an avid shooter.
Bush was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Navy and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with Fleet Marine Force Combat Operations Insignia and Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years Georgia Ann Bush of Morganton; son Michael Bush of LaGrange, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Robert Surowic of Hogansville, Ga.; stepsons and their wives Dennis and Carolyn Neese of Powder Springs, Ga., and Joseph and Teresa Neese of Ashburn, Ga.; stepdaughter and her husband Becky and Millard Hunter of Dawsonville, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law Joanne and Jerry Weaver of Phenix City, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 20, at 11 a.m. from the Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with Pastor C. Eugene Pansler officiating.
Military rites were provided by North Georgia Honor Guard. Graveside services followed at 3 p.m. from Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta, Ga.

Betty Hardy
Survived by family, resident of Ellijay, Ga.
Betty S. Hardy, 62, of Henry-Cantrell Road in Ellijay, Ga., died Oct. 11, 2005, at her residence.
Survivors include her husband of 20 years Carlton F. Hardy of the home; daughters Nancy Essex and Beth McMorris, both of Rhode Island, and Jane McKinnley of Ocala, Fla.; sons Dewey Sturdivant of Mt. Airy, N.C. and Frank Sturdivant of Sparta, N.C.; step-daughters Hollyanna White of McCaysville and Carla Johnson of Ellijay; and step-son Michael Carlton Hardy of Blue Ridge.
Private memorial services were held Oct. 17, at the Hardy residence with the Rev. Larry Stover officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Oma Fowler
A wonderful homemaker, wife and mother,
Oma Davenport Fowler, 89, of Blue Ridge and Blairsville, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005 at Union County Nursing Home. She was born Saturday, Jan. 15, 1916, in Fannin County, to the late Larkin Davenport and the late Lizzie Tilley Davenport.
Fowler was a member of the O’Zion Baptist Church and was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and neighbor.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dudley Fowler.
Survivors include daughters Vickie Forrester of Blairsville, Janie Whitfield of Jasper, brother Carl Davenport of Blue Ridge; sisters Leesta Davenport, Loraine Davenport both of Blue Ridge and Vesta Duval of Nashville, Ga.; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005 at 3 p.m. from the Henry Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Mull and the Rev. Jerry D. Johnson officiating.
Music was provided by Patsy Beaver and James McGill. iIntermentfollowed in O’Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Michael Beavers, Hoyt Campbell, Hubert Stewart, James McGill, Donald Stewart, Michael Pope, W.C. Stewart. Honorary pallbearers included J. T. Duvall, Gerald Prewett and Andy Stephens.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Saturday, Oct. 15.

Betty Morecraft
Loving mother, gardener, artist, survived by family
Betty Joan Bohler Morecraft, 67, of Blue Ridge, died Oct. 15, 2005, in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Morecraft was born in Wilkes County, Ga., on Sept. 30, 1938, and raised her family in Columbia, S.C. and Cartersville, Ga.
She was a loving mother, artist and gardener.
She was preceded in death by her son Tony Michael Gay.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law Andrew Timothy and Jimmy-Jo Gay of Young Harris, Ga., and John Christopher Gay and his fiancée Donna Lane Carver of Blue Ridge; daughters and sons-in-law Sherri Lynn and Elmer Davenport of Seneca, S.C., Tammy Laraine Atkins of Morganton, N.C., and Jennifer Rene and Jeff Kelly of Statesboro, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Oct. 19, 2005 from Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with Dr. Tom Jordan officiating.
Music was by Barbara Cheatham.

Jimmie Spargo
Adored grandchildren, loved reading and westerns
Jimmie Lee Spargo, 79, of Ducktown, died Dec. 19, 2005, at Life Care Center of Copper Basin.
She was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Besimer, Ala., to the late M.L. Snow and the late Brookie Vallee Davis.
Spargo loved to read, watch westerns and adored her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband James “Peebie” Spargo and daughter Gail Spargo Barkley.
Survivors include daughter Ann Landrum of Copperhill; son John Spargo of Copperhill; granddaughters Kerry Richardson and Julie Landrum; grandsons Todd Barkley, Stephen Spargo, and Philip Spargo; great-granddaughter Elizabeth Walker; and great-grandson Jonathan Walker.
Funeral services were held Dec. 21, from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Matthew McDaniel officiating.

Pallbearers included Mark Stone, Darrin Hughes, Rusty Boggs, Stacy Pack, Gerald Danner and Darren Danner.

Linda Shields
Worked in textiles,
native of Cherry Log
Linda Davenport Shields, 57, of Ada Street in Blue Ridge, died Dec. 21, 2005.
Shields was born April 10, 1948, in Cherry Log, the daughter of the late Floyd Henry and Ruby Estelle Aaron Davenport.
She attended Oakhill Independent Church and worked in the textile industry.
Survivors include her husband Vaughn Shields of the home; children Joyce Foster, Pamela Wade and Chris White, all of Blue Ridge, and Denver Parden of Hawaii; stepchildren Kelly Ayers of Homer, Tal Parden of Commerce, Wendy Parden of Gainesville, Paul Shields of Kansas City, Michael Shields of Ellijay and Sandy Shields of Carrolton; brothers Phillip Davenport and Homer Davenport, both of Ellijay, and Leon Davenport, Frank Davenport and Hank Davenport, all of Blue Ridge; sister Deborah Watson of Blue Ridge; six grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Dec. 23, from the Oakhill Independent Church with the Rev. Edward Ledford officiating. Music was by Diane DeHart and the Samaritans.
Pallbearers were Shields’ nephews. Honorary pallbearers were Shields’ nieces and nephews.
