Retired from Lockheed as a sheet metal router
Oscar Clinton Smith, 88, of Morganton, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, in the Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
He was born in Fannin County to the late Andrew Daniel and Lola Gertrude Panter Smith on March 23, 1917.
He was a retired sheet metal router with Lockheed Martin.
Smith was preceded in death by his wife Myrtice H. Smith; sister Mildred Weaver; brothers Raymond Smith, C. Lloyd Smith, Everett Smith and Roy Smith.
Survived include daughters and sons-in-law Mary S. and Michael R. Jones of Jonesboro, Ga., Janie and Don Hales of Woodstock, Ga., and Melinda Smith of Marietta, Ga.; sisters-in-law Hazel Smith, Pat Smith and Doris Hayes; brother-in-law and spouse Lindy and Mel Hayes; grandchildren Jason Clinton Hales and Brent Jones.
Funeral services were held Jan. 23, from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gerald Mathis officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in the Morganton Baptist Church cemetery with Masonic graveside service by Ocoee Lodge #201 F&AM.
Pallbearers included Jason Hales, Brent Jones, Randy Hayes, B.R. Smith, Danny Smith, Roy Smith and Ray Smith. Honorary pallbearers included David Pate and William McGill.
Donations in memory of Smith may be made to the Masonic Children’s Home, 1417 Nottingham Drive, Macon, Ga., 31208, the Alzheimer's Association, 1925 Century Boulevard NE, Suite 10 Atlanta, Ga., 30345-3315, the American Diabetes Association Atlanta/North Georgia Office, Three Corporate Square Suite 120, Atlanta, Ga., 30329, or the Rainbow House Emergency Center for Children (for Abuse and Neglected children) 879 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro, Ga., 30236.

Gladys Millsaps
Survived by family, native of Fannin County
Gladys Mae Millsaps, 95, of McCaysville, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.
She was born July 9, 1910, in Fannin County, to the late George C. Welch and the late Della Ann Carver Welch.
She was a member of the McCaysville Church of Christ and was preceded in death by husband Haden Millsaps.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Bob Jones of McCaysville, Wilma Jean and Bob Dixon of France George, Va., and Lorena Sosebee of McCaysville; sisters Minnie Bell Millsaps and Reva Weeks; grandsons Ronnie Bailey, Larry Sosebee and Terry Botts; granddaughter Vicki Rhodes; step-grandsons Butch Jones, Rick Jones, Terry Dixon and Gary Nixon; eighth great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren,
Funeral services were held Jan. 22, from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with the Minister Bill Johnston and the Minister Butch Jones officiating. Music was provided by Keith Ritchie.
iIntermentfollowed in Mobile Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Brad Soesbee, Larry Soesbee, Ronnie Bailey, Terry Botts, Doug Rhodes and Don Dilbeck.

Naomi Ledford
Worked as nurse’s aide and home care provider
Naomi Elizabeth Ledford, 89, of Turtletown, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Southern Regional Medical Center.
Ledford was born May 10, 1916, in Cherokee County N.C., to the late Charlie Coleman and the late Mary Benfield Coleman.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at Murphy Medical, Copper Basin Medical Center, Blue Ridge Health Care and provided home care for many eldery people in the community.
She was preceded in death by husband Olen W. Ledford.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Wayne and Kamilla Ledford of McDonough, Ga., Donald and Marisa Ledford of Plantation, Fla., David and Jenny Ledford of Huron, Tenn.; daughter Sandra Robinson of Cumming, Ga., 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Jan. 24, from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Bernie Dixon, the Rev. L. B. Adams officiating. Music was provided by Bernie Dixon.
iIntermentfollowed at Liberty Baptist in Murphy.
Pallbearers included Michael Bowling, Ernie Ledford, Hoyt Raper, Robert Ledford, William Ledford and Matthew Ledford. Honorary pallbearers included Charlie Raper, Rody Lister and Doug Hearl.
The Finch-Cochran Funeral Home was in charge.
Leeston Lloid
Retired welder with the Florida State DOT
Leeston Lloid, 86, of Kenansville, Fla., formerly of Blue Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006.
Lloid was born in Valdosta, Ga., to the late Warren and Avie Arnold Lloid on Aug. 16, 1919. He was a retired welder with the Florida State Department of Transportation.
He is survived by daughters Betty Dobbins and Sandra Nolan of Kenansville, Becky Crittenden of North Fort Meyers, Fla., and Brenda Hicks of Blue Ridge; son Leeston Eugene Lloid Jr. of Woodstock, Ga.; sisters Christine Powell and Minnie Wheeler of Fort Meyers; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Jan. 24, from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Whitener officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in the Chastain Memorial Park with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting full military honors.

Rachel Davis
Of the Baptist faith, survived by family
Rachel Lynn Davis, 40, of Blairsville, died Feb. 5, 2006, at Union General Hospital.
She was born Jan. 14, 1966, in Towns County.
She was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Davis was preceded in death by her father Everett Pickelsimer.
Survivors include her husband Clyde Davis of Blairsville; mother and step-father Reva Sue and Jerry Dispane of Blarisville; mother-in-law Betty Davis of Blairsville; brother-in-law Michael Davis of Glenville, Ga.; cousin Tim Snedegar of Blairsville; nurse and cousin Charlotte Beavers of Morganton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Feb. 8, from the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Waymon Lovell, the Rev. Stacy Dyer, the Rev. Harley Hunter and Raymond Byers officiating. Music was provided by Hubert and Betty Legg. Pallbearers included Johnny Holbrooks, R.M. Dyer, Eddie Beavers, Danny Stephens, Bryan Mason, Andy Ware, Benny Burnette and Tommy Green. iIntermentfollowed in Old Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Brandon Dills
Native of Alvin, Texas, worked as a carpenter
Brandon Delane Dills, 21, of Alvin, Texas, died Feb. 5, 2006.
He was born Jan. 14, 1985, in Houston, Texas, and was a lifetime resident of Alvin.
Dills was a carpenter in the construction business.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather Jack Upchurch.
Survivors include his parents Ronnie and Debbie Dills of Alvin; grandparents Joyce Upchurch of Manvel, Texas, Phyllis Upchurch of Houston, Texas, and Anita and Delane Dills of Mineral Bluff; sister Lisi Rayburn and Stacy of Seabrook, Texas; brother Nick Dills of Alvin; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 9, at the Scott Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Gary Richardson officiating.
iIntermentfollowed at Confederate cemetery in Alvin.
Pallbearers were Jordan Campbell, Jay Campbell, Mike Crainer Jr., Tyler Rodriguez, “Big Mike” Miles, Mike Grow, Matthew Dills and Brian Murray.

Gene Phillips
Loved fishing, traveling and dogs
Roy Eugene “Gene” Phillips, 71, of McCaysville, died Feb. 6, 2006 at Erlanger Medical Center.
Phillips was born March 9, 1934 in Fannin County to the late Nathan Phillips and the late Bertie Cabe Phillips.
He loved fishing, traveling and dogs.
Survivors include his wife Bobbie Housley Phillips of McCaysville; brothers and sister-in-law James Phillips of Rome, Herdis Phillips of Blairsville, Larry Joe Phillips of Hazelhurst, Ga., Bob and Betty Phillips of Copperhill; sister Peggy Goode of Copperhill; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Jack and Shirley Housley of Epworth, Max and Carolyn Housley of McCaysville, James Housley and Jerry Housley both of Epworth.
Funeral services were held Feb. 9, 2006 from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Delmar Davenport officiating.
Music was provided by Chad Smith and Valerie Taylor.
Pallbearers were Steve Phillips, Fred Phillips, Roy Tipton, Andy Housley, Bryan Housley, and Tim Housley.

John Debty
Retired heavy equipment operator, WWII veteran
John Jackson Debty, 85, of Marble, N.C., died Feb. 11, 2006, at his residence.
Debty was a native of Graham County, N.C., but had lived in Cherokee County, N.C., for most of his life.
He was the son of the late Chris and Cansada Taylor Debty.
Debty was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army in the Pacific theater.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the Vengence Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by brothers Walter Debty, Willie Debty, Charlie Debty and Carl Debty; grandchildren Anthony Debty and Rebecca Debty; and great-grandson Walker Morgan.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Sadie Rogers Debty; daughters and sons-in-law Reatha and Larry Brown of Andrews, Lodema and Gregg Crowell of Lake Toxaway, N.C., Connie and William Phillips of Marble, and Pamella and Heath Flowers of Mineral Bluff; sons and daughters-in-law Johnny Debty and a special friend Jenny Winters of Fairmount, Ga., Walter and Dianne Debty and Robert and Kim Debty, all of Marble; sister Roberta Lunsford of Marble; brother C.B. Debty of Andrews; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Feb. 14, in the chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Lunsford and the Rev. Lewis Welch officiating.
Burial followed in the Derreberry Cemetery.
Pallbearers included grandsons Richard Lunsford, Shane Lunsford, William Debty, Dustin Phillips, Travis Crowell, Jason O’Dell and Chris Brown.
Gordon Farmer and Larry Brown served as honorary pallbearers.
The family requests memorials be made in loving memory of John Jackson Debty to the Vengence Creek Baptist Church, P.O. Box 253, Marble, N.C., 28905.
Ivie Funeral Home of Murphy was in charge of the arrangements.
