Brenda Wood

Resident of Tunnel Hill, Ga., survived by family
Brenda Lee Wood, 53, of Tunnel Hill, Ga., died May 21, 2006, at Hutcheson Medical Center in Ringgold, Ga.
Mrs. Wood was born July 11, 1952, in Welch, Va., to the late John W. Cantrell Jr. and the late Ethelene Lambert Cantrell.
Survivors include her husband; three children; and 10 brothers and sisters.
A graveside service was held May 26 from the Crestlawn Cemetery.
The Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Hoff

Blairsville First UMC member, active in AARP
Mary Elizabeth Hoff, 84, of Atlanta, died May 26, 2006.
She was born May 7, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Charles Ball and the late Martha Grabb Ball.
Mrs. Hoff was a member of the Blairsville First United Methodist Church and active in AARP.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herman Hoff in 1993.
Survivors include son Bruce Hoff of Atlanta, daughter Sandra Owen of Atlanta, grandsons William Owen and James B. Owen, and great-grandchildren Avery Owen and Emma Owen.
Graveside services were held June 4 from the Copper Ridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. George Owen officiating.
The Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn Haisten

Novice artist who loved painting, music
Evelyn Amy Haisten, 79, of Blue Ridge, formerly of Macon, Ga., died May 31, 2006, in the Fannin Regional Hospital.
Born in Cairo, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Hardy Ponder and Louise Atkins. Mrs. Haisten was a member of Blue Ridge United Methodist Church where she was very active in Bible study. She was a novice artist, especially enjoying painting. She also loved music, especially religious and traditional hymns.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years Clarence Neville Haisten Sr., who served as a United Methodist Church minister for the South Georgia Conference; and son Michael Haisten.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law C.N. Haisten, Jr. and Carol Haisten of Kennesaw, Ga.; brother Ray Ponder of Cairo; sister Bobbie Crumb of Cumming, Ga.; and grandchildren Michael Carl Haisten of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Christopher Allen Haisten of Atlanta.
Funeral services were held June 3, from the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom McElroy officiating. Music was by Elizabeth Hunt and Jess Barnett.
Pallbearers included Chet Sams, Bill McElhannon, Lloyd McKincie and Jess Barnett.
Graveside services were held June 5, from Greenwood cemetery in Cairo.
Family and friends may send contributions to Blue Ridge United Methodist Church in memory of Mrs. Haisten at P.O. Box 85 Blue Ridge, 30513.
Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge.

Monique White

Honor student, loved life, music and literature
Monique Aaron “Nikki” White, 32, died May 28, 2006, at the Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., after a long and courageous battle.
Ms. White was the cherished daughter of Gail and Tony Deal of Bristol, Tenn. She was the light of her mother’s life, and the two of them shared a special bond of love and friendship.
She was an individual who enjoyed life and the many joys and blessings that it presented to her. She had a great appreciation and love for music as well as reading and writing. She also enjoyed being outdoors, leading an active lifestyle running and exercising.
Ms. White was an honor graduate of Tennessee High School in Bristol Tenn. She continued to be an honor student throughout her education while attending East Tennessee State University and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
She had lived and worked in Austin, Texas, before moving back to Bristol to help establish the family business, Absolute Tree Farm in Bluff City.
Ms. White was a member of the State Street United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Horne.
Survivors include her parents Gail and Tony Deal of Bristol; her maternal grandfather, Bruce Horne of Bristol, Va.; her devoted friend Brittney Hill of Bristol Tenn.; her dog Hugo; a very special aunt Bridget Lane of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; her paternal grandparents, Edsel and Imogene Deal of Ducktown; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. White were held June 1, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with M.J. Tucci and the Rev. Reed Shell officiating. Entombment was in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Ms. White’s family plans to establish a memorial garden in her honor. Those who wish to honor her memory may do so by sending a living plant. Contributions may also be sent to the Lupus Foundation of America, Mid-South Chapter, 4004 Hillsboro Rd., Suite 216-B, Nashville, Tenn., 37215.
The Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 276-623-2700, was in charge of the arrangements.

David Brakebill

Veteran, coached football, basketball and wrestling
David Lynn Brakebill, 78, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., died May 29, 2006, in a local hospital.
He was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II, the Korean War, and later served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Post 81.
Mr. Brakebill was an avid sports enthusiast and a well-known coach and educator in the surrounding areas. He coached football, basketball, and wrestling at Mount Juliet High School, Sweetwater High School, East Fannin High School and Loudon High School. After his education career, he was employed with Tennessee Departmet of Employment Security, where he was in charge of Veterans’ Affairs.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mason Jackson Brakebill and Bonnie Marie Guffee Brakebill and brother Bill Brakebill.
Survivors include his wife Betty Falls Brakebill of Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law Barry and Kandie Brakebill of Calhoun; grandchildren Nicklaus Brakebill and Autumn Brakebill; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Helen Brakebill of Ringgold, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law Ann and Ray Hicks of Loudon; nieces Julie Hicks Wilson and Lisa Hicks Smith; and nephews William Joseph Brakebill and Jeffery Mason Brakebill.
The funeral was held June 1 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with the Rev. David Tullock and the Rev. Art Pflug officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors.
Fike Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Gooch

Member of Guiding Baptist, loving mother
Ruby Fair Gooch, 82, of Alpharetta, Ga., died June 3, 2006.
Ms. Gooch was born October 27, 1923 in Fannin County to the late Tom Panter and the late Lizza Long Panter.
She was a member of Guiding Baptist Church and a member of the Atlanta Realtor Association.
Ms. Gooch was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her sons Fairley Gooch of Roswell, Ga. and Tony Gooch of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters Glenda Ross of Orlando, Fla. and Judy Gooch of Inglewood, Colo.; sisters Edna Baker of Riverdale, Ga., Lynn Richards of Blue Ridge, Ida Chadwick of Dalton, Ga. and Annie Colelli of Talmadge, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 5 from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Painter officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Sugarhill Baptist Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Michael Gunning, Elizabeth Gooch, Harold Long, Ray Fraizer, Gary Baker and David Jackson.

W.H. Tipton

Loved his family, hunting, camping and the outdoors
W. H. “H” Tipton, 66, of Morganton died June 5, 2006, at home.
Mr. Tipton was born August 12, 1939, in Fannin County, to the late Wiley Homer Tipton and the late Lydia Ball Tipton.
He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He loved God, hunting, camping, the mountains, auctions, flea markets or just sitting outside when his health begin to fail.
Mr. Tipton especially loved his family and was a kind and compassionate friend to all who knew him. He touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Alderton, parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife Ginny Tipton of Morganton; daughter Melissa Tipton of Morganton; grandchildren Jennifer and Jeff Stewart of Benton and Laura Alderton of Morganton; great-grandson Lance Stewart; special member of the family Maudell Tipton; sister Avis Fuller of Bryson City, N.C., Joyce Garrett of Blairsville and Gladys Lunsford of Suches; and brother Paul Frank Tipton of Morganton.
Funeral services were held June 8, from the New Testament Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Ledford officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Kennon Davenport, Scott Tipton, James Lloyd, Kenny Cochran, Mike Cochran, David McDaris, Roy Ball and Keith Tipton. Honorary pallbearers included: Gene Ball, Jerry Wilson, David Allen and Merle Mashburn.
The Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge.

Linda Ash

Homemaker, member of Pantertown Baptist
Linda B. Ash, 62, of Blue Ridge died June 3, 2006, in the Fannin Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Ash was born in Fannin County to the late James Lee and Minnie Dockery Bell on January 25, 1944.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Pantertown Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ash is preceded in death by a sister Peggy Bell Anderson of Pensacola, Fla.
Survivors include her husband Weldon B. Ash; brother Minister Tommy Bell of Mineral Bluff; half-brother Bill Clements of Kingsport, Tenn.; sister Nowry Bell Jones of Atlanta; and a special friend Sharon Foster of Blue Ridge.
Funeral services were conducted June 5, from the Akins Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mitchell Taylor and the Rev. Delmar Davenport officiating. Music was by Gerald Heaton. iIntermentfollowed on June 6, from the Union Cemetery.
Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge.
