MARIE AVIS LEE MARLOW

Mrs. Marie Avis Lee Marlow age 72 of Nottley Dam Rd. Blairsville passed away on Saturday April 1, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Marlow was born on June 3, 1933 in Fannin County, The daughter of the late Harley Lee and the late Della Barnes Lee. She was a native and lifelong resident of Fannin County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Jackson Marlow in 1978 and also by two sons, James Marlow in 2005 and Johnny Marlow in 2004.Mrs.Marlow was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Marlow are six children, Donnie and Kathy Marlow of Blairsville, Mary Carpenter of Ranger, Brenda Marlow of Ellijay, Barbara and Eugene Lackey of Blairsville, Steve and Melissa Marlow of Mineral Bluff, Ann and Wesley Grizzle of Ranger, two sisters and one brother in law, Elsa Anthony of Blairsville, Ina and Clyde Payne of Blairsville, one brother, Lawrence Lee of Blairsville, twenty Grandchildren, thirteen Great-Grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday April 3, 2006 at 2:00pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Mrs. Marlow’s Grandsons and Nephews. iIntermentwill follow in the Hemptown Baptist Church cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9pm.

FLORA MAE FANN

Mrs. Flora Mae Fann age 95 of Tractor Trails Blairsville formerly of Marietta passed away on Saturday April 1, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Fann was born on Sept. 10, 1910 in Canton, GA., The daughter of the late Richard Turk Peardon and the late Georgia Bell Darby Peardon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leman Fann, son, Charles Lee Fann, daughter, Sally Mae Fann and by a granddaughter, Pat Christopher. Flora Mae was a great mother, grandmother and friend. She had a green thumb for gardening and was a good cook. She loved to travel and enjoyed arts and crafts. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Fann was a member of Cooper Lake Baptist Church in Smyrna, GA.
Surviving Mrs. Fann are three daughters, Florine Painter of Andrews, NC., Jo Brown of Blairsville, Peggy Corder of Carrollton, GA., two brothers, Gene Peardon of Dahlonega, Junior and Geneva Peardon of Marietta six grandchildren, Lora Corder, Lolita Rodrigues, Tim Corder, Roy Brown Jr., Charaine Manwell and Lisa Downs. A number of great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday April 4, 2006 at 1:00pm from the Cherokee Memorial Park cemetery in Canton, GA. With the Rev. Hubert Legg officiating. The family will meet with friends following the services.

EUGENE FRANKLIN ROGERS

Mr. Eugene Franklin Rogers age 70 of Chapman Ford Rd. Blairsville passed away on Friday April 7, 2006 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Rogers was born on Sept. 18, 1935 in Union County, The son of the late Grady Rogers and the late Violet Reece Rogers. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. He was a veteran of the US Air Force. He owned and operated Genes Appliance Repair Service for several years. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ricky Rogers in 2006 and Wayne Rogers in 1987.Mr.Rogers was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Mr. Rogers are his loving wife of forty two years, Winona Barbara Rogers of Blairsville, seven children, Verna and Ricky Vincent of Forest Park, GA., William and Glenda Peck of Douglasville, GA., Michael Rogers of Seattle, WA., Pat and Laura Hacker of Woodstock, Janet and Jeff King of Blairsville, three sisters and two brother in laws, Thelma Self of Columbia, SC., Willie and Harry Colwell of Blairsville, Betty and Charles Hutson of Ball Ground, GA., six Grandchildren, Nicky, Christy, Krystal, Tracey, Jason and Jonathon, four Great-Grandchildren, Brandy, Brittney, Courtney and Clint Jr., many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday April 9, 2006 from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William Sisum and Mrs. Betty Hutson officiating. Special music will be presented by Becky Rogers. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Tim Colwell, Joey Colwell, Kenny Hutson, Johnny Cook, Jackie Cook and Wade Howell. iIntermentwill follow in the Union Memory Gardens cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-9pm.

GLENN DOCKERY

Mr. Glenn Dockery age 75 of Ivy Log Rd. Blairsville passed away on Tuesday May 8.2007 ay his home. Mr. Dockery was born on Oct. 1, 1932 in Clay County, NC., the son of the late Caney Dockery and the late Hattie Miller Dockery He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Teems, Pearl Owenby and Stella Giles, three brothers, Homer, Elmer and Ed Dockery. Mr. Dockery was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Dockery are his wife of thirty seven years, Katie Owens Dockery of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Brian and Pamela Dockery of Pulaski, TN., four sisters and one brother in law, Opal Wooten of Duluth, GA., Valeria and Fred Rogers of Fostoria, OH., Verda Anderson of Young Harris, Roxie Owenby of Blairsville, one brother and sister in law, Vergal and Mary Dockery of Young Harris, two grandchildren, Taylor and Blaine Dockery, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 11, 2007 at 11:00am from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ray Potts officiating. Special music will be presented The Wilson Family. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Dockery’s nephews. iIntermentwill follow in the Long Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8pm.

LARRY WEST JOHNSON

Korean War
Larry West Johnson, 75, a former longtime Bridgeman Street, Barre resident, died Friday, May 11, 2007, at his home on Laurel Mountain Estate Blvd. in Blairsville, GA.
Born on January, 23, 1932 in Phoenix, AZ, he was the son of E. Herbert and Winona Mae (Griffith) Johnson. After moving to Barre with his family, he attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1949, both in Barre. He went on to graduate from Boston University with a BS degree in Business Management in August of 1957. He also did post-graduate work at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
From September of 1950 to July of 1952, he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the 172nd Regiment, 43rd Division.
On August 17, 1952, he married Constance A. Folsom in the United Methodist Church in Northfield, VT. Following their marriage, they made their home in Waltham, MA and Hammond/Highland, IN before moving to Barre. In 2005, they moved to Blairsville, GA.
In earlier years, Larry was employed as an industrial engineer at International Harvester, Rand McNally, and Wallace Press. In Barre, he was self-employed as the owner and operator of Johnson’s Bakery, both a wholesale and retail business. Later, he became the bakery manager at Howard’s Market in South Barre.
Larry was a thirty-nine year member of the Barre Congregational Church where he served as Deacon, a Sunday school teacher and church auditor. After moving to Blairsville, he became a member of the Mountain Presbyterian Church.
Proud of his military service, he was a member of the prize winning Color Guard of Whiting, IN and the American Legion Post 80. In Barre, he was a Past Commander and Past Adjutant of the American Legion Post 10 where he also volunteered in many other service activities and was a member of the VFW Mackenzie-Webster Post 790. He provided and served Military Honor Guards at many Vermont veterans’ funeral services.
Larry was always an active member of his community. For twenty-years, he served as a Barre City Alderman. He was a past member and chairman of the Barre City Board of Civil Authority, a former Barre City GOP chairman and a Washington County GOP delegate. He was a member of the Barre Granite Lodge 35, the F & AM Masons; former chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; a reading mentor at Barre City Elementary and Middle School; delivered for the Meals-On-Wheels Program to shut-ins in the Central Vermont area; volunteered at Central Vermont Adult Basic Education; Board Chairman of local public access CVTV; and produced programs for CVTV. Larry was honored as an Outstanding Citizen of Greater Barre in 2002. While living in Blairsville, he was a recycling volunteer. In earlier years, he was a former Precinct Committeeman in Highland, IN and a Young GOP delegate from Lake County, IN to the 1960 Republican National Convention in Chicago.
Larry enjoyed reading, traveling, current events, and especially spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Constance Johnson of Blairsville, GA; two sons, Russell Kendall Johnson and his wife, Deborah of Decatur, GA and Kerrick Lance Johnson and his wife, Mary Ann of Barre; four daughters, Lauren Jeanne Bisson and her husband, Ronald of Walden, VT; Erika Leigh McGilley and her husband, Donald of Rockport, ME, R. Winona Johnson and her companion, Paul Tasetano of Williamstown, VT, and Marilyn "Peggy" Johnson and her companion, Jonathan Wheeler of Barre; an "adopted" son and daughter, Anwar and Sabina Shaik; nineteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Johnson and his wife, Bertha of Woodbury, VT and Richard K. Johnson and his wife, Judith of Barre; a sister, Marilyn M. Matte of Hernando, FL; a sister-in-law, Carmen Johnson of Johnson City, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Reynold O. Johnson and a brother-in-law, Julian A. Matte.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 20, 2007at 2:00 p.m. in the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, with the Rev.Travis Adams officiating. A Memorial Service will take place at a later date in the Barre Congregational Church. iIntermentwill take place with full Military Honors at the Vermont Veterans’ Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center.
Contribution in his memory may be made to the Regency Hospice of Northeast Georgia, PO Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546 or to Habitat For Humanity.

VEDA MAE WEAVER

Mrs. Veda Mae Weaver age 39 of Cumming formerly of Blairsville passed away on Saturday May 12, 2007 in the Emory Hospital following a sudden illness. Mrs. Weaver was born on June 19, 1967 in Union County, the daughter of James Wayne Weaver and Susan Elaine Gibson Weaver. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Wayne Weaver and grandmothers, Frankie Fortenberry and Ila Mae Weaver. Mrs. Weaver was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Weaver are her fiancé’, Greg Claus of Cumminf, GA., one daughter and son in law, Amanda and Jim Levi of Blairsville, one son, Jesse Gibson of Blairsville, step son, Cody Gibson of Blairsville, mother, Elaine Alexander of Blairsville, father and step mother, James and Karen Weaver of Calhoun, grandfather, Doyle Fortenberry of Blairsville, three sisters and one brother in law, Pam and Jerry Madden of Iowa, Roberta Weaver of Young Harris, Janice Weaver of Big Rapids, MI., step sister, Melissa Smith of Niceville, FL., two half brothers, James Weaver of Dalton, Nicholas Weaver of Calhoun, three grandchildren, Sierra Weaver, James and Savannah Levi, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 15, 2007 at 3:00pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Katie Strals officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Nicholas Weaver, Jim Levi, Cody Gibson, Chad Gibson, Boyd Weaver and Burt Carter. iIntermentwill follow in the Coosa Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to defray medical and funeral expenses in Mrs. Weaver’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening after 6:00pm.

Lethia Mareia Wold

Mrs. Lethia Mareia Wold age 54 of Rustic Ridge Trail Young Harris went to be with her Lord on Sunday May 13, 2007 from the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Wold was born on Jan.12, 1953 in Lake Wales, FL., the daughter of Alma Wasden Wold and Pete Shiver. Lethia was a loving daughter and a friend to all who knew her.She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Wold in 1999.Mrs.Wold was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Wold are her mother and father, Alma and Pete Shiver of Young Harris, one aunt, Tula King of DeLand, FL., two nieces, three nephews, many cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.
No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the M. S. Foundation or to the Union County Nursing Home in Mrs. Wold’s memory.

MAX PATTON KELLEY

Mrs. Max Patton Kelley age 67 of Murphy Hwy Blairsville passed away on Saturday Dec. 29, 2007 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Kelley was born on Nov.22, 1940 in Union County, the daughter of the later Lester Patton and the late Lola Seabolt Patton. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. She had taught School in Gwinnett County Schools for two years and had taught in the Union County School System for over twenty eight years. Max was a wonderful mom and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace (Bud) Kelley in Sept. of this year. Mrs. Kelley attended the House of Prayer Church.
Surviving Mrs. Kelley one daughter and son in law, Casey and Keith Potts of Blairsville, two sons and one daughter in law, Chris and Karen Kelley of Blairsville, Mark Kelley of Blairsville, three brothers and sister in laws, Rex and Melva Lyn Patton of Blairsville, Denny and Connie Patton of Blairsville, Phil and Ann Patton of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Seth and Becka Merritt, Connor and Chloe Potts, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Monday Dec. 31, 2007 at 4:00pm from the House of Prayer Church with the Rev, Jerry Helton officiating. Special music will be presented by Freddie Burrell. In lieu of flowers if you wish the family requests that memorials may be made to the Max Kelley Scholarship Fund in Mrs. Kelley’s memory.

BETTY JEAN HENDERSON GOOCH

Betty Gooch, age 75 of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Union General Hospital after a brief illness. Betty was born in Ava, Missouri on September 11, 1932. She married Robert James Henderson, a native of Union County, and moved to Blairsville in 1972 with their four loving children. Mr. Henderson preceded her in death. Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother and wonderful nana. Betty was employed by the Georgia Mountain Experiment Station and retired in 1995 after 23 years of service as an extension secretary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blairsville, Ga.
Mrs. Gooch is survived by husband Glen Gooch of 21 years. Four children and spouses: Jerry and Karen Henderson, Debbie and Bobby Wilson, Kim and Jerry Farner, and Robin and Billy Burnette all of Blairsville, Georgia. two sisters, Lena Harper-Klippert of CA., Opal Beglartour of NJ., Step children and spouse: Doug and Nancy Gooch, and Glendon Gooch of Blairsville, Georgia. Eight grandchildren: Ami Terry of Cumming, GA, Robert Henderson of Destin, Fl, Calvin Burnette, Lauren and Derick Dillinger, Kevin Terry, Jessica Farner, Jake Farner, and Clay Burnette all of Blairsville, Georgia. Five step grandchildren and spouses: Jeff and Karen Gooch of Murphy, NC, Stephen and Becky Gooch, Glenda Gooch, Brittany Gooch, and Jake Gooch all of Blairsville, Georgia. Five step great grandchildren: Chandler Gooch and Morgan Gooch of Murphy, NC, Patrick Gooch, Peyton Gooch, and Pressley Gooch all of Blairsville, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Blairsville, Georgia, on Tuesday, January 1st at 11:00 am with Rev. Danny Parris, Rev. Fred Lodge and Rev. B. A. Buchanan officiating. Special music will be presented by Terry Hooper and June Caldwell. Burial will be at Union Memory Gardens in Blairsville, Georgia. Pallbearers are Robert Henderson, Calvin Burnette, Kevin Terry, Jake Farner, Jake Gooch, Clay Burnette, Jeff Gooch and Stephen Gooch.

RUTH HOLLOWAY

Mrs. Ruth Holloway age 84 of Lawrenceville, GA. formerly of Blairsville passed away on Monday Dec. 31, 2007 in Gainesville following an extended illness. Mrs. Holloway was born on Oct. 7, 1923 in Union County, the daughter of the late Harvey D. Stephens and the late Lilia Pierce Stephens. She was such a loving and caring person who dearly loved her family and enjoyed just being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by them all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Clyde Holloway in 1992.Ruth was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Holloway are two sons and daughter in laws, Jimmy and Marsha Holloway of Winder, GA., Jerry and Rita Holloway of Lawrenceville, one daughter and son in law, Yvonne and Mike Chesler of Buford, GA., two brothers and sister in laws, Jeep and Lela Stephens of Blairsville, Mark and Maxine Stephens Stephens of Aiken, SC., one sister, Cora Dixon of Marietta, five grandchildren, Amanda Holloway, Sherry and Jim Coffield, Holly and Ronnie McKenzie, Angela Chesler and Kyle Chesler, five great grandchildren, Sarah, Noah, Hannah, Rebecca and Micah Coffield, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday Jan.4, 2008 at 1:00pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating. Special music will be presented by Tommy Green. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Mike Stephens, Ronnie McKenzie, Jim Coffield and Craig Stephens. iIntermentwill follow in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11-1:00pm.

LOU JEAN HUGHES

Mrs. Lou Jean Hughes age 65 of Townsend Mill Rd. Young Harris passed away on Jan.1, 2008 following an extended illness. Mrs. Hughes was born on June 16, 1942 in Towns County, the daughter of the late Grady Alfred Hughes and the late Bertha Floy Hunter Hughes. She was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Shook. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Hughes are one daughter and son in law, Pam and Joe Young of Young Harris, three sons and daughter in laws, Rev. Gary and Denise Guffey of Blairsville, Greg and Missy Guffey of Young Harris, Chris and Shelly Guffey of Young Harris, one sister, Floss Knight of Young Harris, two brothers and sister in laws, James and Imojean Hughes of Cleveland, TN., Ed and Mary Hughes of Piedmont, SC., ten grandchildren, Krystal, Tasha and William Young, Brian, Hogan, Jordan, Andrew and Daniel Guffey, Hope Crawford and Natalie Guffey, one great grandchild, Zoe Crawford, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday Jan.3, 2008 from the Old Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Guffey and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Special music will be presented by Rev. Ricky Rogers. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Harold Dean Parker, Stacy Stephens, Jeff Mitchell, Raymond Byers, Bobby Kirby Jr., Kevin Russell, Matt Leisch and Jay Lynch. iIntermentwill follow in the Old Union Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wed. evening after 6:00pm.
