W. Melvin Griffin

Wiley Melvin Griffin, 77, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 10, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he had worked for Conley Sheet Metal for 35 years before owning his own sheet metal business in Patterson. He was a US Army veteran having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mary Johnson Griffin, and four brothers, Albert Griffin, Lonnie Griffin, Edward Griffin and Barney Griffin.
Survivors include his wife, Aldine Martin Griffin, Patterson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Steve Cohoon, Hoschton and Cindy and Robert Chancey, Adairsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Dorothy Griffin, Patterson and Derwin and Debbie Griffin, Waycross; a sister, Audrey Chaney, St. Marys; two brothers, Tom Griffin and Lester Griffin, both of St. Cloud, FL; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 13), from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Margaret Brightman Barrett

Margaret B. Barrett, 97, of Waycross died early Sunday morning, December 10, 2006 at Gardenview Assisted Living in Blackshear after an extended illness.
She was born in Ben Hill County, to the late Charles Brightman and Ella Lou Mull Brightman, but had made Waycross her home for most of her life.
She worked as a secretary for the Department of Fish and Wildlife Services in the Okefenokee Refuge Office. She was a member of the Baptist faith and loved nature, especially gardening and bird watching.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Barrett; a daughter, Aubrea Victoria Zeigler and a grandson, Jerry Richard Zeigler.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia B. Zeigler and her husband Ben, Savannah, Nancy B. Fleury and her husband Andre, Blackshear and Gerry B. Ferrell and her husband Steve, Rockford, TN; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 12, from Oakland cemetery in Waycross.
Miles-Odum Funeral Home of Waycross was in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Clifton ‘Country’ Childs

Wallace Clifton Childs, 88, of Thomasville, died Sunday night, December 10, 2006 in Columbus.
He was born April 4, 1918 in Turner County to Wilbur Allen Childs Sr., and Louisa Banks Childs. His brother, Wilbur Allen Childs Jr., and his sister, Muriel Wash, preceded him in death.
He attended Abraham Baldwin Junior College, where he played basketball and baseball, and he graduated from the University of Georgia with bachelors and masters degrees. He served as Navy pilot during World War II, and he taught agriculture and coached basketball after the war ended. During his coaching career at Irwinville, Blackshear, Alma and Glennville, Georgia, he compiled a record that earned him recognition from the Atlanta Tip-Off Club as one of Georgia’s most successful basketball coaches, membership in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the nickname, “Country.” He transferred into school administration at the conclusion of his coaching career, and he worked in that capacity as principal of Atkinson County High School and Thomas County High School until his retirement. He had been a resident of Thomasville for 35 years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Thomasville for many years, singing in the choir and serving as a deacon. He was a member and leader of many civic and professional organizations, including the Association of Retired Teachers, the Lion’s Club and Golden K. He was a director emeritus of the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Thomasville.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Beall Childs, his son, Richard Allen Childs, his daughter-in-law, Mimi Pease Childs, his granddaughter, Louisa Banks Childs, and nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 13) from the chapel of the Thomasville First Baptist Church.

Sammy Lamar Hickson

Sammy Lamar Hickson, 59, of Blackshear died suddenly Sunday morning, December 10, 2006 at his residence.
A native of Coffee County, he had lived most of his life in Ware and Pierce Counties. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Max Hickson and Erma Lee Hughes Hickson.
He was a former employee of the Waycross Journal Herald and the City of Waycross in the Planning and Codes Dept. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons Jeffrey Hickson (wife Barbara), Blackshear and Kelvin Hickson (wife Courtney), Waycross; four grandchildren, J.J. and Paige Hickson, Blackshear and Cody and Logan Hickson, Waycross, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Mae Williams

Jessie Mae Williams, 70, of 1305 Martin Luther King Dr. in Waycross, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross after a lengthy illness.
She was born November 14, 1936 in Cordele, to the late Gertrude Melton. She was educated in the public schools of Crisp County. Later in life, she relocated to Waycross, where she met and later united in holy matrimony to the late Ben Williams and to that union a daughter was born, Bennie Bell Williams. During her adult life, she accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ and affiliated herself with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Moss. She was a past member of the senior choir. Her greatest past-time was fishing with her late husband every chance they could.
She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted daughter, Bennie Bell Williams, Waycross; two grandchildren, Jerry L. Williams, Orlando, FL and Eric R. Williams, Waycross; one great-grandson, Jordan L. Williams, Orlando, FL; a devoted god-mother, Carrie Everett, Waycross; two devoted god-daughters Katheline Tripp and Priscilla Raynard, both of Waycross; a devoted cousin Minnie Dotson, Waycross; six step-children Coretta Outley, Conell Williams, Alvin Williams, Marilyn Hicks, Tewanna Brown and Donovan Williams, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2, from the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Waycross, with the Rev. Clarence Taylor, pastor, delivering words of comfort to the family.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Rainge Memorial Chapel Inc. of Blackshear.

Cameron Chase Peacock

Cameron Chase Peacock, infant son of Jessica Peacock, of Blackshear died Monday, November 27, 2006, in Guyton, following a brief illness.
He is survived by his mother Jessica Peacock, Blackshear; a brother Caleb Peacock, Atlanta; grandparents Buddy Peacock, Blackshear; Debbie Peacock, Waycross; great-grandparents Ethell Thornton, Blackshear and Warren and Carolyn Fox, Blackshear; an aunt, Jaimie Peacock, Blackshear, loving godparents, Robin and Gina Crawford, Blackshear and a cousin Madison Dryden, Blackshear and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Charles Latson

Charles Latson, 59, of 2437 Piney Grove Road, Blackshear, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, after a brief illness.
He was born November 15, 1947 in Jesup (Wayne Co.) to the present Pearlie Taylor and the late Herman Latson. He received his education in the public schools of Wayne County. As an adult, he relocated to Blackshear where he met and married Zelma McGauley Latson. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends, cooking for family, some painting and karate. He was affiliated with Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Later in life, he joined The House of Prayer.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Kevin Maurice Atkinson and Charles Jhraiel Latson and two uncles, Harvey Mackey and Woodrow Mackey.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted mother, Pearlie Taylor, Blackshear; his wife Zelma Latson, Waycross; six daughters Tonya Ballard, Winter Springs, FL, Erica Latson, NJ, Kim Sharpe (Everett), Effort, PA, Chanala Latson, Waycross and Ena Broady, Blackshear; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Henrietta Williams, Blackshear; three brothers Carl Mackey (Jennifer), Herman Latson and Edward Latson (Frances), all of Jesup; one uncle, Theodore Mackey (Pearlie) Blackshear; aunts Jackie Blakely, Blackshear; Annie Jane James, (Marion), Blackshear and Helen Hatten, Jesup, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, from the Rainge Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Nelson Horne, Eulogist.

Active pallbearers were Anwar Padgett, Ronald McGauley, Dale Jacobs, Dale Willingham, Theo Mackey and Callus Taylor.
Honorary pallbearers were: Deacon Eugene Harris, David Earl Harris and Larry Murdock.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Rainge Memorial Chapel Inc. of Blackshear.

Ouida Alexander

Ouida Alexander, 77, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2006, at National Health Care in North Augusta, SC, following an extended illness.
She was retired as an assistant professor at South Georgia College in Douglas and was the widow of the late Bob Alexander.
Survivors include a brother, Earl Boatright (wife Jackie), Douglas; three nieces, Shirle Bennett (husband David), Jacksonville, FL, Rhonda Teeters, Lynn, IN and Melinda Allison (husband Jimmy), Waycross; four nephews, Greg Alexander (wife Tammy), North Augusta, SC, Don Alexander, Morgantown, WV, David Alexander, Lynn, IN and Robert Boatright (Pam), Atlanta.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, from the First Baptist Church of Douglas with the Rev. Shep Johnson, Oscar Street and Brian McNeill officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

Patricia Ann Thornton Page

Patricia Ann Thornton Page, 66, of Patterson died Thursday evening, November 30, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Thornton and Wiley V. Thomas Thornton and a brother, Jimmy Thornton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Patterson Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Page, Patterson; daughter, Valerey Page, Patterson; three sons Kent Page, Patterson, Keith Page, Chesterland, OH and Kyle Page, Hoboken; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; five sisters Linda Sornson (husband Jim), Patterson, Debbie Griggs and Jeanie Taylor, both of Waycross, Marilyn Snyder (husband Norman) and Libby Strickland, all of Jacksonville, FL; a brother, Bud Thornton (wife Bonnie), Offerman and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 6), from the Patterson Baptist Church.
Her wish was for her body to be donated to the Medical College of Georgia for research.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Smith Funeral Home in Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.
