Dana Wayne Council
Dana Wayne Council, 34, of Blackshear, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon, September 19, 2006, at his residence.
He was a native of Jacksonville, FL, but had lived in Pierce County since 1984. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Wayne Council.
He was graduate of Pierce County High School Class of 1989. He owned and operated Council Construction since 1996. He was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church, San-Ty Hunting Club in Jesup, and the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.
Survivors include his wife, Michelle Council, Blackshear; a daughter, Marlee Council; two sons, Justin Council and Tyler Council, both of Blackshear; his mother and step-father, Cathy and Ronnie Bradley, Blackshear; father and mother-in-law, Lewis and Debbie Dixon, Blackshear; grandparents Ollie and Ethel Steed, Jacksonville, Rufus and Delores Carter, Blackshear and Minor Lee Dixon, Blackshear; a sister Kelly Bradley, Blackshear; a brother Corey Bradley, Blackshear, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 22, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Burial will take place at a later date.

Gerry Barnes Minchew
Gerry Barnes Minchew, 70, of Waycross died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was a native of Pierce County but had lived most of her life in Ware County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Minchew; her parents, Percy Barnes and Virginia Danford Barnes, and a sister, Jackie Middleton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Crawford St. Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son Michael Minchew (wife Lori), Waycross; daughter, Teri Hardy (husband Jay), Sugar Hill; four grandchildren Ashley and Jake Minchew, both of Waycross and Mark and Morgan Hardy, both of Sugar Hill; three sisters Velma Daniels, Pat Wright (husband Bob), and Lavodis McCarthy, all of Waycross; a brother Royce Barnes (wife Marilynn), Blackshear, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 23, from the Crawford Street Baptist Church in Waycross.

James Ernest Hill
James Ernest Hill, 94, of Mt. Brook, AL, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2006.
He had been a resident of Kirkwood by the River since July 2002.
He was born on a farm in Gary, WV May 31, 1912 the oldest of 13 children, He graduated from Berea College in 1936 and taught science and math at a private boy’s school in Mount Zion an in 1937 moved to Birmingham, AL, where he became the head of the metallurgy department, mill works manager and later head of sales at TCI (US Steel). He traveled the world to sell tin plate and ws responsible for a good percent of TCI sales.
In 1939, he married
the head of the Berea College music department, Irene Ziegler, who died in 1972. In 1974, he married
Ora Lee Baxter Bardsdale who died in February, 2005. Both wives supported his interests. He traveled, golfed and supported the opera, music communities, museums, Vulcan, the Methodist Church, Antique Automobile Club of America, Dixie Region, the Helfer Fund, Alabama Public Television Public Broadcasting (WBHM), the Alabama Theatre, Birmingham Rose Society, American Association of University Women Memorial Scholarship Fund, Birmingham-Southern College, Berea College and other community, world and family projects.
He was a proud member of The Club, a member of the honor societies Sigma Pi Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi, Vestavia Hills Country Club, Downtown First United Methodist Church, The Downtown Club, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, The Birmingham Museum of Art, the Birmingham Music Club and many others. He was very active in Operation New Birmingham. He was a past president of the American Society of Metals, a member of American Iron and Steel Engineers, Old Guard Society of the National Canners Association, Florida Canners Association, Sales and Marketing Executives of Birmingham, Kiwanis, Alabama Senior Golfers Association, Birmingham Regional Golfers Association, past president of the Berea College Alumni Association and a board member of Opera Birmingham.
In addition to his degree from Berea College, he did graduate study at the University of Alabama in the areas of metallurgy, Chemistry of Coke and byproducts, time study, wage incentives and labor relations.
In his retirement, he continued his education with financial seminars, growing roses, golfing and attending every Masters from its early years through 2001.
He and his wife, Ora Lee, generously remembered his early roots and his alma mater, Berea College.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Ora Lee Hill, who died February 7, 2005 at age 92; his parents, Ella Mae Collins and Arthur Curan Hill.
He is mourned by his sisters, Betty Myers (husband George), Columbus, OH and Gaynell Griffin, Woodlawn, VA and many nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends, especially Jane and Bob Hinds, Birmingham, AL and Rod and Helen Bussey, Berea, KY. All will miss and mourn his absence.
Memorial services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, from Kirkwood by the River, Irondale, with the Rev. Richard Hanna officiating.
A private burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berea College, Opera Birmingham, Landmark Alabama Theatre, Charitable Foundation of Greater Birmingham, Birmingham Rose Society, Birmingham Souther College or a charity of one’s choice.

James Francis Prudhomme
James Francis Prudhomme, 63, of Blackshear, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross following a lengthy illness.
Born in Minomial Falls, MI, he had lived in Key Largo, FL for many years before moving to Pierce County six years ago. A commercial fisherman, he was a son of the late Wally and Agnes Lozier Prudhomme and was also preceded in death by a son, James Francis Prudhomme Jr., who passed away in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Thrift Prudhomme, Blackshear; a daughter, Denise Lynn Prudhomme, Blackshear; a son, Jason Rudolph Prudhomme of Florida; two sisters, Sandra, Key Largo and Mary Lou of Georgia; five brothers, Jack, Wayne, Danny and Peanut, all of Wisconsin and Bob, Key Largo; three grandsons, Devin James Bishop, Derek Ryan Bishop and Joshua Raymond Bishop; his father-in-law, Carl Thrift, Blackshear; a nephew, Rudolph Carl Thrift Jr., Blackshear and several other nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A family memorial service will take place him at a later date.
Memorialization is by cremation.

Jasper C. ‘J.C.’ Souther
Jasper “J.C.” Souther, 78, of Blackshear died Thursday, September 21, 2006, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL after an extended illness.
He was born in Bibb County to the late William F. Souther and Isadora Preston Souther. He had made his home in Waycross/Blackshear since 1958.
He was retired as the owner of S&S Recreation Vehicle Sales and previously was manager of the parts and service department of R. L. Walker Chevrolet. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife Mary Parker Souther, Blackshear; two daughters, Patricia J. Carson, Greenville, SC and Mary Pamela Golden (husband, Johnny), Leesburg; a son, Phillip R. Souther (wife, Rita), Bethel Island, CA; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Stafford, Warner Robins, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A private memorial service will be held with family and close friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 409410, Atlanta, Georgia 30384-9410.

Joyce Wilene Proctor Brown
Joyce Wilene Proctor Brown, 81, of Waycross, formerly of Blackshear, died Friday night, September 22, 2006 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL.
She was born in Pierce County to the late James Proctor and Bertie Altman Proctor. She lived in Greenville, SC, Columbia, SC and Stone Mountain, before moving back to Blackshear in 1982.
She worked as an operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company, but spent most of her time as a loving housewife and mother. She devoted her life to her family and caring for others. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Co-Ed IV/King’s Men Sunday School Class.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Roy Dixon, Buddy Dixon, Cora Lee Dixon, Sonny Dixon, Nell Cason, Vasco Proctor, T.R. Proctor, Pearl Bowen and Dudley Proctor.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Roger Brown, Waycross; two daughters, Deborah Rollins (husband Ronnie), Dahlonega, Susan Liedman (husband Carl), Cherry Hill, NJ; her grandchildren, Roger James Hardeman, Atlanta, Kelsey Liedman and Jordie Liedman, both of Cherry Hill, NJ; a sister, Ola Maude Walker, Waycross; two sisters-in-law, Louise Proctor, Blackshear and Gladys Dixon, Conway, SC and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, from Central Baptist Church in Waycross.
The Co-Ed IV/King’s Men Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.

Kennon L. ‘K.L.’ Tyre Sr.
Kennon L. Tyre Sr., 83, of Mershon, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 12, 2006, at his residence after a short illness.
A native of Bacon County, he was a son of the late Marion Cleveland Tyre and Sarah Retta Hyers Tyre. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Cliett Tyre, six brothers, a sister and a grandchild. He was a retired farmer, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII.
Survivors include three sons, Kennon L. Tyre Jr. ( wife Janice) and Johnny Philip Tyre Sr. (wife Gwen), all of Mershon and Bradley Cleveland Tyre Sr. (wife Jan); Douglas; two sisters, Laverne Boatright, Mershon and Ila Jean Cliett, Augusta; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, from the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. L.G. Aldridge, the Rev. Calvin Courson and the Rev. R.B. Gaskins officiating.

Active pallbearers were Ken Tyre, Cleve Tyre Jr., Phil Tyre, Brandon Tyre, Tim Howard, Cory Tyre, Cecil Norris and Kevin Hutcheson.

Daniel Lee
Daniel Lee, 81, of Blackshear, passed away Friday evening, September 15, 2006, at the Bayview Nursing Home.
Born in Melbourne, FL, he was reared on Billy’s Island but later moved to Wisconsin. He was a retired staff sergeant with the US Army where he had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During his tour of Vietnam, he received the Purple Heart and also the Bronze Star with 1st and 2nd oak leaf clusters. After his retirement from the military he moved to Imboden, AR and later to Sycamore, before moving to Pierce County 12 years ago. Some of his hobbies were fishing, gardening and traveling. He was a son of the late Jackson and Mattie Ella Saunders Lee and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Lee.
Survivors include his wife, Bashie Elois Batten Lee, Blackshear; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and David Tanner of Oklahoma and Diane and Richard Crosby and Marie and Jasper Crawford, all of Blackshear; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth Lee of Texas, Robert David and Robin Batten and Daniel Batten, all of Hickox and Dennis Batten, Blackshear; two brothers, Simon Lee and Demus Lee both of Wisconsin; 20 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two special nieces, Eloise Johnson, Jacksonville, FL and Iris Kicklighter, Sycamore and several other nieces, nephews and relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, September 20) from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.
