Grady Owens
Services for Grady Owens of Lumber City were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 in the First United Methodist Church in Hazlehurst with interment in the Riverside Cemetery in Lumber City.
The Rev. Sam Vernon and Brother Rich McClements officiated.
Owens, 77, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006 in The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He was the son of the late Wiley McKinley Owens and Claire Owens of Decatur, and was married to Anne Owens of Lumber City.
A native of Decatur, Ala., he had lived in Hazlehurst for 10 years and had moved to Lumber City one year ago. He was a WWII veteran, retired from Terminix and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include his son, Jerry (Judy) Powell of Lumber City; grandchildren, Jason and Mandy Powell of Lumber City; brothers, Sam Chaffin of Decatur, Ala., Greg (Sandy) Owens of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Louise and Buddy Varnadoe of Lumber City; and several nieces and nephews.
Miles Funeral Home of Hazlehurst was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Hobson Brown Jr.
Services for Rev. Hobson Brown Jr. of Chauncey were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 in Southerland Funeral Chapel in Eastman with interment in Chauncey Cemetery.
The Rev. Jim Fennell, Tim Brown and the Rev. Royce Vaughn officiated.
Brown, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 in the Dodge County Hospital. He was the son of the late Hobson Brown Sr. and Winnie Walker Brown. He was married to Nell Sanders Brown of Chauncey.
A native of Dodge County, he was a retired employee of Jones-Sanders Builders Supply and a Baptist minister for 41 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughters, Sandra McCranie of Eastman, and Pat Daniel of Dublin; son, Tim Brown of Chauncey; three sisters, Mary Lizzie Sapp of Eastman, Tommie Sue Marchant of Milan and Ann Kirkpatrick of Roddy; brother, Ed Brown of Orlando; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Stokes-Southerland Funeral Home of Eastman was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. John Calvin Durrence
Services for Rev. John Calvin Durrence of Reidsville were held Friday, Dec. 23 at the First Baptist Church of Lyons with interment in Reidsville City Cemetery.
The Rev. Dannie Williams, the Rev. C.B. Easterlin and the Rev. Ted Candler officiated.
Durrence, 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 at his residence after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Segal Durrence and Lessie Mae Durrence of Reidsville and was married to Jewel Durrence.
A native and long-time resident of Tattnall County, he was Director of Missions for 15 years with the Daniel Baptist Association, and farmed with his father and son. He was a graduate of Reidsville High School, Mercer University in Macon and Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He has pastored numerous churches. He had served as Chairman of the Tattnall County School Board for eight years, served on the Tax Assessors Board for Tattnall County and was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyons.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include one daughter, Mila (Keith) Spaulding of Rockville, Va.; one son, Kyle (Sonya) Durrence of Reidsville; and six grandchildren, Bethany, Bailey, and Brynn Durrence and Leslie, Christina and Jonathan Spaulding.
Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Elgin Griffin Sr.
Services for Raymond Elgin Griffin Sr. of McRae, formerly of Pridgen Community, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at New Corinth Calvary Holiness Church with interment in the DeBerry Church Cemetery near Ambrose in Coffee County.
The Rev. Allen Peacock and the Rev. Vernon Hughes officiated.
Griffin, 90, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at the Taylor Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of the late Sam Yell Griffin and Essie Guthrie Griffin and was married to Sue Smith Griffin of McRae. He was preceded in death by his children, Elgin Griffin and Marilyn Morton Powell, and brothers, Harley, J.L., Ollen and Virgil Griffin.
A native of Etowah, Ark., he was a farmer and painter. He was an avid fisherman and proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine, serving in WWII. He was a member of Mt. Galilee Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by daughters, Romola (Joe) Davis of West Memphis, Ark., and June (Vernon) Lewis of McRae; son, Dan (Jessie) Griffin of Liberty, S.C.; brothers, O’Neil (Gena) Griffin of Kerrville, Texas and Mike (Linda) Griffin of Houston, Texas; sisters, Sylvia Kinnett of Aiken, S.C., Doris Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Pat (Richard) Brodie of LaLuz, N.M.; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Sims Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.

Joe Lush Hulett
Services for Joe L. Hulett of Alamo were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with interment in the Alamo Memorial Cemetery.
The Rev. Royce Hulett and Alvin Merritt officiated.
Hulett, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006. He was the son of the late Hicks and Susie Williams Hulett.
A native of Telfair County, he was the retired owner and operator of a service station and attended Alamo Church of God.
Survivors include his son, Arthur (Betty) Hulett of Alamo; daughter, Brenda (Terrell) Anderson of Alamo; brother, Robert Hulett of Dry Branch; sisters, Louise Watson of College Park and Julia Daniels of McRae; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.
Lucious Studstill
Services for Lucious Studstill of Jacksonville were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with interment in Wesley Chapel CME Church’s cemetery.
The Rev. Kenneth Wells officiated.
Studstill, 52, died Friday Dec. 30, 2005 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He was the son of the late Horace and Ruth Studstill of McRae.
He was a native of Telfair County.
Survivors include his sisters, Bernice Graham of Jacksonville, Marva Watkins of Miami, Fla., Marie Studstill of Chester, Pa., Judy Howell and Charlotte Studstill of Jacksonville, Tammy (James) Wimberly of Douglas, Trina (Alonzo) Roberts of Atlanta, Barbara Studstill and Lovie Bray of Eastman; three brothers, Horace Studstill of McRae, Robert Studstill of Jacksonville, and Donnie Studstill of Chester, Pa., and a host of nieces, nephews, relative and friends.
A.L. Spaulding Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Harrelson Crowe
Services for Rosa Harrelson Crowe of McRae were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Helena with interment in the Harrelson Family Cemetery in Wheeler County.
The Rev. Joe F. Stevens and Pearl Cook officiated.
Crowe, 98, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at McRae Manor Nursing Home in McRae. She was the daughter of the late John William “Champ” and Ruth Thomas “Dolly” Harrelson. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ray Alois Crowe and Conde Jan Crowe.
A native of Wheeler County, she was a farmer and homemaker as well as a lifetime member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.B. Angelo Crowe of Wheeler County and Richard Harrelson Crowe of Helena; nine grandchildren, Michael A. Crowe of Doraville, Cathrine Keller of Rocky Face, Martin A. Crowe of Duluth, Genny Conley of McRae, Marianne Eslami of Birmingham, Ala., Cindy Davis of Clearmont, Fla., Lisa Milligan and Kay Branton of Mt. Dora, Fla., and Dale Crowe of Memphis, Tenn.; 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Eliza Vaughn Futrell
Services for Eliza Vaughn Futrell, formerly of Rhine were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29 in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with interment in Vaughn Tabernacle Cemetery.
The Rev. C.A. Hulett officiated.
Futrell, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005. She was the daughter of the late Henry Coleman Vaughn and Eliza Hulett Vaughn and was married to Royce Futrell of Rhine.
A native of Telfair County, Futrell was a homemaker and attended United Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include sons, Jack Martin of Douglasville and James Watts of Slidell, La.; daughters, Annette Futrell of Murray, Ky. and Sharon Ramos of Benson, Ind.; sisters, Nannie Vaughn Morowich of Eastman and Edna Vaughn Pickens of Shelby, Ohio; brother, Coleman Vaughn Jr. of Eastman; four grandchildren, one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.

Everette Gordon
Services for Everette Gordon of Lumber City were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Lumber City United Methodist Church with interment in Riverside Cemetery in Lumber City.
The Rev. Dan Williamson, the Rev. Sandi Conley and the Rev. James Boyd officiated.
Gordon, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He was the son of Raymond and Mary Delk Gordon of Long County and was married to Robbie Mims Gordon.
He was a member of the Lumber City United Methodist Church and a member of the Lumber City Methodist Men’s Club where he served as president for many years. He was a member of the Lumber City Volunteer Fire Department during the 50s and 60s and a member of the Half-Century Club at Brewton Parker College.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Cynthia (Mike) Boyd of Lumber City; one grandson, Gordon Bain Maloy of Lumber City; one brother, Bill Gordon of Atlanta; three sisters, Nell Horne, Lillian Simmons and Jan Mixon, all of Ludowici; and several nieces and nephews.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

James Elbert Hulett
Services for James Elbert Hulett of Jacksonville were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Friendship Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Howard Hart officiated.
Hulett, 81, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005. He was the son of the late Allen J. and Alma Viola Giddens Hulett.
A native of Telfair County, he was self-employed and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include a niece, Georgie Hulett of Jacksonville; nephew, Garvis Hulett of Rome; and great-niece, Lynn Sheffield Chauncey.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.
