James Wendell Waters
James Wendell Waters, 69, of Blackshear, passed away late Saturday evening, September 16, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he was named Master Tree Farmer in 1996. He was the president of the National Farmers Organization, a title he had held since 1968. He had also been a recipient of the Outstanding Young Farmer award and was a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was in the Wesley Fellowship Class #1 and was a son of the late James Woodrow and Madge Raulerson Waters.
Survivors include his wife, Norma James Waters, Blackshear; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Grant Lewis, Jesup and Tina and Joey Beckworth, Blackshear; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jerrian Waters, Blackshear; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura and Mike Anderson, Blackshear, Matilda and William Dukes, Quitman and Nell and Billie Clanton, Odum; five grandchildren, Leah Lewis, Jesup and Thomas Beckworth, Amelia Beckworth, Katie Waters and A. J. Waters, all of Blackshear and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 19, from the First United Methodist Church.

Alton ‘Dick’ Aspinwall
Alton “Dick” Aspinwall, 91, of Offerman passed away late Sunday evening, September 17, 2006, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
Born in Pierce County, he had lived in many different locations with his career with the railroad before moving back to Pierce County in 1957. He retired from the ACL (now CSX) Railroad after 30 years of service and had also farmed. He was a member of the Offerman Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge (# 583) that merged with the Blackshear Masonic Lodge, # 270. A son of the late Colon Harry “C.H.” & Maude Milligan Aspinwall, he was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Debbie Johnson, and two sisters, Hazel Thomas and Hulda Jones.
Survivors are his wife, Mina Smith Aspinwall, Offerman; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth A. and Jim Johnson, Fayetteville; a son and daughter-in-law, James “Jim” and Iris Aspinwall, of Patterson; a sister, Mary Lou Byrd, Patterson; two grandchildren, Jo Ellen Aspinwall, Statesboro and Greg Johnson (wife Robin), Fayetteville; three great-grandchildren, Megan Johnson, Tallahassee, FL and Ryan Johnson and Kaitlyn Johnson, both of Fayetteville; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 21, from the Offerman Baptist Church.

Joseph Lawton Coleman
Joseph Lawton Coleman, 62, of Blackshear, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 6, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Appling County, but had lived all of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Eva Jordan Smith Coleman; two brothers, Grady W. Thornton Sr. and Charles Coleman, and one sister, Roberta Lovell.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator and farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Lee Coleman, Blackshear; three daughters, Michelle Coleman (fiancé David Horton), Blackshear, Angela Coleman, Brunswick and Samantha Miller (husband Jimmy), Waynesville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Jerald Durance (wife Linda), Montgomery, AL, mother-in-law Margaret Wilson, Waverly and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Alton Isiah Howard
Alton Isiah Howard, 89, of Patterson, passed away Sunday morning, September 10, 2006, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born in Pierce County, he was retired from the US Air Force after 24 years of service. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he went to work with the ASCS Office where he later retired. He had also driven a school bus for the Pierce County Board of Education and was a member of the Masonic Lodge Alpha 172 Fort Walton Beach, FL. He was a member of the Patterson Baptist Church where he was in the Men’s Bible Class. He was a son of the late Arthur Zadok and Clifford Walker Howard and was also preceded in death by a son, Clifford Alton Howard Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Grace King Howard, Patterson; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Mitchell Riggins, Richmond Hill; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Donna Howard, Rome; two sisters, Naomi Carrin, Blackshear and Josie Owens, Patterson; two brothers, Linton Howard, Blackshear and Jack Howard, Waycross; six grandchildren, Melanie Wright, Cliff Howard Jr., Alton Howard, Kelly Howard, Elizabeth Riggins and Mollie Riggins; five great-grandchildren, Cole Howard, Alexis Wright, Noah Wright, Luke Wright and Allie Wright and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. this morning, (Wednesday, September 13) from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

John Lee Mixon
John Lee Mixon, 83, of Blackshear, passed away Sunday morning, September 10, 2006, at his residence.
Born in Pierce County, he had lived in Jacksonville, FL for many years before moving back to Pierce County in 1971. He retired from CSX (formerly ACL Railroad) where he had worked as an electrician for 39 1/2 years. He devoted a lot of time to perfecting his gardening skills which he was well known for and was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved to help others and will be remembered as a wonderful husband and father. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way with CSX and the Emmanuel Baptist Church where he was in the Jim Jones SS Class. Mr. Mixon was a son of the late Porter and Alder Hogan Mixon.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Doris Davis Mixon, Blackshear; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Howard, Blackshear and Penny and Larry Roberts, Lawrenceville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Vickie Mixon, Orange Beach, AL, Barry and Debbie Mixon, Troutville, VA and Glenn and Joan Mixon, Blackshear; six sisters, Evalee Smart, Marie Mattox, and Grace Brewer, all of Blackshear, Nell Whaley, Wallace, NC, Margie McIlwawin, Ocean Springs, MS, Dot Bragain, Worantown, WV and Eulamae Bowman, Pensacola, FL; a brother, Memory Mixon, Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren, Stephanie Roberts, Melissa Roberts, Michelle Sheperd, Jonathan Mixon, Barry Lee Mixon and Jordan Mixon; four great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Cynthia Paulette Thompson Sharpe
Cynthia Sharpe, 48, of Mershon, died Monday morning, September 11, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after a brief illness.
She was a native of Bacon County but had lived most of her life in Pierce County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Thompson and Clyo Taylor Thompson, and a granddaughter, Chadrianna Williams.
She formerly managed Fennels Restaurant in Bristol and then owned and operated Cynthia’s Kitchen in Bristol.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband, Carroll Sharpe, Mershon; two daughters, Misty Allen Davis (husband Billy), Blackshear, Cara Sharpe (fiance Chad Williams) Waycross; two sons, Bill Sharpe (wife Liz), Alma, Shaun Allen (wife Suzanne), Douglas; six grandchildren; a brother, Phelan Thompson, Alma; four sisters, Jan Allen, Blackshear, Colleen Adams, Alma, Vivian Stallings (husband Harry), Alma, Muriel Martin (husband Bill), Alma; mother-in-law, Ophelia Sharpe, Mershon and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Lisa Melinda Sornson Tanner
Lisa Melinda Sornson Tanner, 39, of Orange Park, FL, formerly of Patterson, passed away suddenly Sunday, September 10, 2006.
She was born September 24, 1966 in Ware County, the daughter of Jimmy R. Sornson, Sr. and Linda Thornton Sornson of Patterson.
She was a dedicated woman both in her family life and her career. Before moving to Orange Park, she taught seventh and eighth graders at Pierce County High School, and also worked as a registered nurse in the birthing center at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
She was currently employed as a labor and delivery nurse at Memorial Medical Center in Jacksonville.
She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband Scott Tanner, Jacksonville, FL; her daughter, Virginia Rae Tanner, Jacksonville; brother Jimmy R. Sornson Jr. (and wife Annemarie), Jacksonville; her mother-in-law Jackie Tanner, Jacksonville; sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Scott Miller, Jacksonville; aunts and uncles, Marilyn and Norman Snyder, Jacksonville and Patricia and Gary Page, Patterson; her aunts, Libby Strickland, Jacksonville and Merle Jean Taylor and Debbie Griggs, both of Waycross; uncle and aunt Willis “Bud” and Bonnie Thornton, Patterson; uncle Randy Sornson, Fair Bluff, NC; a great-uncle Earl Zimmerman of Elk Horn, WI and many other loving family members, friends and associates.

Ruthie Graham Linder
Ruthie Graham Linder, 67, of 1201 South First Street, H-7-5 Briarwood Apartments, Jesup, died Saturday evening, August 26, 2006, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born October 5, 1938 in Laurens County as a daughter of the late Roosevelt Graham and Rosa Lee O’Neal Graham. She was educated in the public schools of Laurens County. Later she moved to Bacon County where she was employed by the Bacon County Hospital for many years. She met Willie Linder Jr. and married
in 1973 and remained in Alma until 2005 when she moved to Jesup to be united with all of her children and extended family.
Survivors include her husband, Willie Linder Jr., Jesup; three daughters, Stephanie Mitchell, Atlanta, Sonja P. Hudson and Tonga Brown, both of Jesup; a son, Katonga (Cynthia) Mitchell, Alma; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; seven brothers, Walter Lewis, Henry Madison, Nelson Madison, Roosevelt Graham, Herman Graham, Jimmy L. Graham and Harry Graham; 11 sisters, Bobby Jean Robinson, Josephine Madison, Rosetta Davis, Glenda Clark, Lula Mae Jernigan, Lucille Graham, Virginia Graham, Edna M. Graham, Ruthie Nell Graham, Darlene Graham and Pauline Graham and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Roger Layton Crews
Roger Layton Crews, 53, of Jesup, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, following an apparent heart attack.
A former resident of Fernandina Beach, FL, he had lived in Jesup since 1957. He was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church, a retired electrical supervisor with Rayonier, a charter member of IBEW LU 1545, Masonic Lodge #112, Alee Shrine and the Huxford Genealogical Society of Homerville. He was an avid granddaddy, genealogist and historian. He was preceded in death by his father, Merle Crews.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Joyce Arnette Crews, Jesup; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger Jr. and Bryan Crews, Winter Garden, FL and Jason Crews, Jesup; his mother, Minnie Crews, Jesup, a brother, Ron Crews, Fernandina Beach, FL, and three grandchildren, Austin Cole Crews, Jesup and Kaeli Bryan and Jacob Layton Crews, both of Winter Garden, FL.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, from the Jesup First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Felix Haynes officiating.
