Bettie L. Youmans

Bettie “Bettie Mama” Lucas Youmans, 76, of Millwood died Thursday evening, August 31, 2006, at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after a brief illness.
A native of Patterson, she had lived in Ware County for most of her life. She lived on Harriet’s Bluff and became a volunteer firefighter while she was in her 60s successfully completing the training for a firefighter. She later retired from Flash Foods as a clerk. She was a member of Waresboro Baptist Church. Her parents were the late Jessie Armstrong Lucas and Maud Estelle Harris Lucas. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Comas Lucas, Guy Lucas, Nathan Lucas, Blanche Griner, Grace Allen, Eva Warren, and Faye Roberson.
Survivors include two daughters, Kaye Smith and Faye King (husband Randy), all of Millwood; one son, Guy Walker (wife Lorene), Crestview, FL; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Boss (husband Don), Hortense, Agatha Goddard (husband J.W.), Waycross, Joyce “Tinker” Houston, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral service were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 3, from the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.

Patricia K. ‘Trish’ Gill

Patricia K. “Trish” Gill, 56, of Jacksonville, FL, died Thursday, August 31, 2006.
The Indiana native had lived in Florida most of her life and was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bert” Gill, who passed away in July.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela Bond (fiance Kenneth Sheppard), Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Sheila Batten, Blackshear and Sharon Thrift, Bristol, TN; four brothers, Mike Kirk, Jacksonville, FL, Steve Kirk, Tony Kirk and Mark Kirk, all of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two grandchildren, Jenna Bond and Dustin Bond, both of Jacksonville, FL; soon to be great-grandson, Cole Sonnenberg and her mother-in-law, Betty Tyre Blinson, Jesup and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006 from the Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alvin Gill officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in Lake Chapel Church cemetery in Appling County.
Active pallbearers were Felton B. Batten, Felton W. Batten, Mike Kirk, Tommy Kirk, Kenneth Sheppard and Ernie Westberry.
Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.

Laura Colleen Hamilton Smith Turner

Laura Colleen Hamilton Smith Turner, 93, of Alma passed away early Saturday afternoon, September 2, 2006, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, she was a housewife and was also a member of the Mershon Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late William Jackson and Della Kelly Hamilton and was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Smith; her second husband, Joe Clyde Turner; and three sons, Willie “W. D.” Smith, John Edward Smith and James F. Smith. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary Smith Campbell, Jacksonville, FL, Sue Smith and Robby Robbins, Live Oak, FL, Ruby Smith and Dale Long, Smyrna and Diana Turner and Joe Webster, New Market, TN; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Paul and Shirley Turner, Hendersonville, NC, Larry and Becky Turner, Blackshear, Harry Smith, St. Marys and Wayne and Michelle Turner, Mershon; a sister, Willie Dell Johnson, Jesup; a brother and sister-in-law, Lenwood and Phyllis Hamilton, Blackshear; 34 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Henry Levi Herritt Jr.

Henry Levi Herritt Jr., 61, of Waycross died Sunday afternoon, September 3, 2006, at the Pierce County Nursing Home following an extended illness.
He was a native of Richland, OH but lived 22 years in Jacksonville, FL before moving to Waycross last year. He was a retired truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Levi Herritt and Ferna Dickerson Herritt.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Herritt, Waycross; a daughter, Heather Brown (husband Carl), Jacksonville, FL; a son, Henry Herritt III (wife Angela), Grand Prairie, OH; two step-daughters Susan Manor (husband Robert), Jacksonville, FL and Michelle Watkins, Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren, and his father-in-law, Idus Fallin, Jacksonville, FL.
There will be no public services.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society.

Bonnie Cunningham Shadrick

Bonnie Cunningham Shadrick, 76, of Pinetta, FL, died unexpectedly, Monday, September 4, 2006, after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Hamilton County, FL and had been a resident of Pinetta, FL, since 1953. She served her community over 35 years through dedicated service in the careers of both teaching and nursing. After retirement, she devoted her life to her family and her church through committments that included the United Methodist Women Association and the United Methodist Fifty-Five Plus Club.
She was recently preceded in death by a sister and long-time teacher, Mary Martha Lambert.
Survivors include Cathy Myers and husband Bruce, Cartersville, Julie Sandebeck and husband Scott, Valdosta, Allen Shadrick and wife Sharon, Pinetta and Jennifer Dean and husband Chuck, Patterson; a sister, Hilda Alderman, Jennings, FL; a brother, Dr. Richard Cunningham, Gainesville, FL; eight grandchildren and one great-granchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 6) from the Beggs Funeral Home in Madison, FL.
iIntermentfollowed in the Burnham Christian Church cemetery in Hamilton County.

Paul James Lambert

Paul James Lambert, 46, of 2319 Gill Rd. Patterson and formerly of Norwich, CT died suddenly August 31, 2006.
He was born in Norwich, CT July 10, 1960 the son of Albert F. Lambert of Preston and the late Rosemay (Colburn) Lambert.
Paul was last employed by the City of Norwich Dept. of Public Works before mo Besides his wife and father he is survived by two sons, Paul James Lambert II of Dayville and Jeffrey Jon Lambert Jackson of Conneticut. One daughter, Crystal Lambert of Dayville. Three brothers, Daniel Lambert of Cumberland, ME. Thomas Lambert of Yale, WA and Peter Lambert of Preston. Two sisters, Marie Waitkus of Henryetta, OK and Ann Minor of Bristol. Three granddaughters, numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins and a close friend Dot Mees.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, September 6. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Guillot Funeral Home 75 So. B St. Taftville is in charge of arrangements.

Addie Louise Bagley Wolfe

Addie Louise Bagley Wolfe, 92, of Lakeland passed away Tuesday evening, August 23, 2006, at the Louis Smith Hospital in Lakeland.
Born in Bacon County, she had lived in Waycross for many years before moving to Homerville in 2001 and then Lakeland in December 2005. She had been a seamstress and was a member of the Salem Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late John Henderson and Fannie Meeks Bagley and was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin W. Wolfe; two daughters, Gail Waters and Mesheldeon Wolfe and a son, Waldon Wolfe.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Melba and Jake Davis and Brenda and Nathaniel Davis, all of Hahira, Audrey and Kim Cummin, Tri Ridge, KY and Martie and Mike Sansone, Portland, ME; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Susan Wolfe and Don and Sharon Wolfe, all of Blackshear; two sisters, Odessa Street, Nicholls and Mary Joiner, Guyton; a brother, Odell Bagley, Nicholls; 33 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were hedl at 3 p.m. Friday, August 25, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel

David Earl Sharpe Sr.

David Earl Sharpe Sr., 48, of Mershon, died Wednesday afternoon, August 23, 2006, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL after a brief illness.
A native of Ware County, he had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his father, William Henry Sharpe; a daughter, Brenda Gail Sharpe, and a brother, Jerome Sharpe.
He was employed with Ace Pole Company as a pole classifier with 19 years of service. He was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Sharpe, Mershon; his mother, Ophelia Sharpe, Mershon; a daughter Ann Roberson (husband Andy), Mershon; two sons, Earl Sharpe and Jerome Sharpe, all of Mershon; two grandchildren Abigail “Abbie” Roberson and Andrew Roberson, both of Mershon; father and mother-in-law, Dave and Eunice Eason, Bristol; three brothers, Carroll Sharpe (wife Cynthia), Mershon, William Sharpe (wife Cindy), Baxley, and Reppard Sharpe, Mershon; two sisters, Shirley Rodriguez (husband Rigo), Ocala, FL and Shelia Whitaker (husband Rodney), Mershon and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 26, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

George A. Powers

George A. Powers, 82, of Sumter, SC, died Monday, August 28, 2006 at Alterra Sterling House.
A native of Blackshear, he was a son of the late Winton A. Powers and the late Ida Mae Walker Powers and widower of Virginia Catherine Newman Powers.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the elite group known as Rogers’ Rangers. He fought with the Ninth Army, the 11th Cavalry and then went into Bastogne with Patton’s Third Army to the Battle of the Bulge. Following the Battle of the Bulge, he stayed with the Third Army and marched across Europe in the Allies’ successful campaign to end WWII.
He received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor and service to his country.
Following WWII, he joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 25 years of service as a Senior Master Sergeant. After his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he enjoyed his time in the outdoors and especially loved fishing. He was also a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include two sons, Dusty Powers, Hampstead, NC and Ronald S. Powers and wife Jeanne Sharp Powers, Mt. Pleasant, SC; a daughter, Donna P. Rivers and husband J. T. “Buddy” Rivers III, Sumter; four grandchildren, John Townsend Rivers IV, Catherine Bryant Powers, Walter Stanley Powers and Nicholas Walker Powers; a brother, Winton A. Powers Jr., Ft. Worth, TX; two sisters, Cora Belle Sanders, Jacksonville, FL and Allie Mae Waters and husband Robert, Blackshear.
Graveside funeral services with full military honors were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, August 30), from the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with U. S. Navy Chaplain Lt. Ray Rivers officiating.
Memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29153, to Alterra Sterling House, Landscaping the Home Front Fund, 1180 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.
Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter, SC, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. ‘Joe’ Hicks

Robert L. “Joe” Hicks, 63, of 22241 Aburto Lane, Port Charlotte, FL, and a native of Patterson, died early Thursday morning, August 10, 2006, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Patterson, and was educated in the Pierce County Schools. He married Julia Grant, his wife of 42 years, and later moved to Florida.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Julia; two daughters, Sharon Marie Hicks, Port Charlotte, FL, and Stephanie (James) Williams, Lehigh Acres, FL, and a child by-choice, Michelle Brown, Ellenwood, two sisters, Ilene Davis, Atlanta, and Audrey Hicks, Miami, FL; three grandchildren Elgin Hicks, Port Charlotte, Jaleisce and Brent Williams, Lehigh Acres, FL; two great-grandchildren D’Andre and Aryana Hicks, Port Charlotte, FL.; aunts Lillian Daniels, Patterson, who was a devoted aunt and mother and Mrs. Louise (Albert) Flynn, Waycross, four brothers-in-law Jonathon (Hester) Grant, Patterson, Thomas (Annie Pearl) Grant, Philadelphia, PA, Archie Grant, Richmond, VA and Ulyssee (Geraldine) Grant, Rochester, NY, two sisters-in-law Connie ( Herman) Lincoln and Betty Grant, both of Patterson; a half-brother Arthur (Betty) Mathews, Rivera Beach, FL; half-sisters Rose Jenkins, Inglewood, CA, and Pearl Lowd, Los Angeles, CA; adopted brothers and sisters: Timothy Gibson, Roscoe Gibson, Kenneth Gibson and Patricia Gibson, Marion Daniels and Earlene Jacobs, Patterson, and Bernice Murdock, Waycross, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 19, from the St. James Missionary Baptist Church “The Ridge” in Patterson.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jacobs Funeral Home of Blackshear.
