Wilton O. ‘Bill’ Bryant
Wilton O. “Bill” Bryant, 75, of Waycross died Monday morning (August 14, 2006) at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after an extended illness.
He was born in Alma and was a lifetime resident of Ware County. He was retired from CSX in the blacksmith shop after 33 years of service. He was a member of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church and the South Georgia Officials Association where he officiated football and basketball games. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge Order of Elks where he received “Elk Of The Year” 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
He was inducted into the United States Army in 1952. He served as a sergeant in Heavy Mortar Company 160th Infantry Regime, where he earned the distinguished honors of Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Bars, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and was Honorably discharged in 1953. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Retha McCall Bryant; his wife, Vela L. Bryant and one brother, Orvel Byant.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Deyne Munaualli (husband Dr. Gilly), Charlotte, NC; one grandson, Ross Lovell, New York City, NY, two great-granddaughters, Laurene and Sophie Lovell; a step-son, Terry L. Youmans, two brothers, Cooper Bryant and Osburn “Bug” Bryant, both of Waycross; two sisters, O’Ceil Kovack, Waycross and Elaine Booth, Blackshear; special extended family, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Moye, Mallory and Molly and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 from the Sweat Memorial Baptist Church.

Robert H. ‘Bob’ Lipe
Robert H. “Bob” Lipe, 76, of Faulkville, passed away Monday, August 14, 2006 at Westview Nursing Center after a year long battle with Alzheimer’s.
He was a self-employed contractor and worked for many years for Savannah Wholesale Distributors building the Allied Department Stores. He was a member of the Ash Street Baptist Church. He served as past president of the Lakeside Community Association, past president of the Lakeside Athletic Association and was active in organizing the Lakeside adult and youth baseball and softball leagues and helping to build a ballfield at Lakeside. He was instrumental in starting the Faulkville Fire Department and he was a good friend and neighbor and he will be greatly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his father and his mother, George Theodore Lipe and Isabelle Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Kitty Lipe, Faulkville; daughter and son-in-law, Johnna and Jody Seifert, Orlando, FL; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Marcy Lane, Guyton; step-daughter, Debbie Smoak, Faulkville; step-son, Jeff Lane, Savannah; sister, Patricia Harris, Winterset, IA; grandchildren, Justin, Joey, Shayne, Sydney, Samantha and Robbie.
A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Friday, August 18, from the Ash Street Baptist Church.

Horace Jackson Strickland
Horace Jackson Strickland, 78, of St. George, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at his residence.
A native of Pierce County, he was the son of the late Farley and Mamie Strickland. He was a member of the VFW Post # 9560 and served 40 years in the Merchant Marines. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Robert Daniels and by a brother, Harvey Strickland.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Strickland, St. George; two step-children Joyce Ann Gross, Leesburg, FL and Jackie Gross, New Castle, IN; three sisters Clara Thornton, Blackshear, Bernice Morgan, Mystic, CT, and Myrtie Highsmith, Waycross; two brothers Milton Strickland, Melrose, FL and Banner Strickland, Jacksonville, FL; seven step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 from the Shepard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lamar Christie officiating.

Susie Vernie Pate Tanner
Susie Vernie Pate Tanner, 91, of Blackshear, passed away Saturday afternoon, August 19, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she had worked for the Pierce Shoe Factory and at the Blackshear Elementary School lunch room for many years. She and her late husband, Leslie Lane Tanner, had also owned and operated their own income tax business. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a daughter of the late Provet J. and Ada Tuten Pate and was also preceded in death by two sons, Leslie E. “Pickle” Tanner and William D. Tanner; her sister, Essie Millikin and both of her brothers, Clarence Pate and J. D. Pate.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Donna Tanner, Blackshear; three daughters-in-law, Peggy Tanner, Vallejo, CA and Bobbie Tanner and Pam T. Saxon, both of Blackshear; 10 grandchildren, Wendy (Herb) Temple, Lee Tanner, Timmy Tanner, Susan (Stevie) Boatright, Terri (Michael) Altman, Cathy (Brian) Moore, Jacie Tanner, Jordan Tanner, Amy (Andy) Cargile and Dan (Shanna) Tanner; 11 great-grandchildren, Shelby Temple, Nick Temple, Chaz Boatright, Chandler Boatright, Chase Altman, Bryce Altman, Sarah Jane Moore, Maxx Bizzell, Emma Cargile, Andrew Cargile and Davis Tanner and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, from the First United Methodist Church.

Julia Brown Woodard
Julia Annette Brown Woodard, 68, died Saturday afternoon, August 19, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross following an extended illness.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived many years in South Florida before moving back to Pierce County in 1977. She was preceded in death by her father, Rommie Lee Brown.
She was a member of Youmans Chapel Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She retired from Flash Foods with 10 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Warner Woodard, Blackshear; a step-daughter, Tammie Phillips (husband Carl), Blackshear, a step-son Larry Carpenter (wife Carol), Eustis, FL.; her mother, Julia Batten Arnold, Blackshear; four brothers Wendell Brown (wife Doris), Gainesville, FL, Jerry Brown (wife Barbara), Benson, NC, Ronald Brown (wife Nora), Blackshear and Stanley Brown, Memphis, TN; a sister, Almeeda Smith, Woodward, OK, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Ruby Alice Combee Woodard
Ruby Alice Combee Woodard, 83, of Blackshear, passed away early Saturday morning, August 19, 2006, at her residence.
Born in Polk County, FL, she had lived in Blackshear for most of her adult life. She was a housewife and a Protestant. She was a daughter of the late Edward Christopher and Minnie Mae Brown Combee and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Geneva Bostic and two sons, William Oscar Woodard and Samuel David Woodard. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother and also as a very good friend.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, William Ollin Woodard, Blackshear; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Ann and J. Dale Byrd, Dothan, AL, Mayble Lucille and Hoytt Daugherty, Starke, FL and Oveida Darlene and Dennis Melton, Blackshear; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Harvey and Tina Woodard, both of Waycross, Melvin and Marlene Woodard, Hoboken and Lester and Sheila Woodard and Alvin Tommy and Connie Woodard, all of Blackshear; a sister, Margaret Lashley, Crystal River FL; two brothers, Charles Combee of Tennessee and Lloyd Reed Combee of FL; 30 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Robert Vonna Holton
Robert Vonna “Bobby” Holton, 67, of Douglas, passed away Monday, August 7, 2007, at home after an extended illness.
A native of Coffee County, he was born February 10, 1939, as a son of the late Vonna George and Alice Mabelle Kirkland Holton. He was a retiree of CSX Railroad and operator of Carter’s Fried Chicken. He was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Douglas Holton, Douglas; a son, Andy (Sherryl) Holton, Douglas; daughters, Tammy Sue (David) DePratter Bell, Blackshear, Wendy Glynn (Charles) McConnell, Kingsland, Allison Renee Holton, Douglas, Mercedes Prevatt, Fitzgerald and Marie Primm, Las Vegas NV; a brother Kermit Holton and Kiler Holton, Las Vegas NV; an uncle, Kiler Kirkland, Nicholls; grandchildren, Sharee Holton, Bobby Holton, John Tyler Holton, Anthony DePratter, Eric DePratter, Kolby DePratter, Wren DePratter, Marcy Lewis, Jacob Holton, Missy Holton, Mackenzie Bradford and Lancelot Holton; great-grandchildren, Wednesday Lewis, Natalie Sheigh Lewis and Jordan Holton.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 10, from Sand Hill Baptist church near Douglas with the Rev. Stan Clough and the Rev. L. G. Aldridge officiating. Kolby DePratter gave the eulogy. Soloist, Larry Lewis sang, “Beulah Land” and “The Anchor Holds” and the congregation sang, “How Great Thou Art” with Barbara Crews, pianist.
Graveside services followed in the Stokesville Church cemetery in Atkinson County, with the Rev. Herbert Box officiating.
Active pallbearers were Otis Douglas, John Cleland, Jason Keene, Cody Keene, Kasey Keene and Doug Douglas.
Honorary pallbearers were D. A. Douglas, Fred Douglas, Carroll Carter, Leonard Thrift, Kiler Kirkland, Junior Kirkland, Junior Stapleton, Berry Carter, Forrest Carter, James Carter and Jimmy Carter.

Betty Jean Spurlock Peace
Betty Jean Spurlock Peace, 73, of Patterson died late Wednesday night, August 9, 2006, at the Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.
A native of Van, WV, she had lived several years in Hollywood, FL before moving to Patterson in 1979.
She was preceded in death by her father Harrison Spurlock and mother Delores Guthrie Spurlock.
She retired as a nurse from Satilla Regional Medical Center. She was a member at the Patterson Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Eastern Star for 51 years in Logan, WV and a member of the Day Lilly Fillies Chapter of the Red Hat Society of Waycross.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Hubert Peace, Patterson; two daughters Michelle Jean Poulsen, Blackshear and Tracee (Michael) Smith, Patterson; two sons Kim (Lesa) Herman of Belleview, FL and Michael (Candy) Herman, Belleview, FL; 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren; four sisters, Carrie Spurlock, Seattle, Wash., Ann Hamblin, Fayetteville, NC, Vicki Spurlock of Wisconsin, and Mary Alice Bowlby, Seattle, WA; four brothers Howard Spurlock of West Virginia., Edward Spurlock, Hartwell, Arthur Spurlock, Tucker, Dual Gene Spurlock of Wisconsin, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 13, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Terry Lamar ‘Red’ Preston Sr.
Terry Lamar “Red” Preston Sr., 50, of Blackshear, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 9, 2006, at his residence.
Born in Ware County, he had lived in Blackshear for the last 10 years. He had been a heavy equipment operator in the construction business and attended Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was known as the “Sheriff of Will Road” because he was always looking out for the well being of the neighborhood children. He was a special person full of laughter and always had a compliment for everyone. His special comment was “hey ya’ll, your hair looks nice” no matter what it may have looked like. He was a son of the late Theodore H. Preston and was also preceded in death by a sister, Teresa Welton.
Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Terry L. Jr. and Lynn Preston, Blackshear; his mother, Betty Jo Cowart Stevens, Norton, OH; a sister, Debbie Mawrer, Norton, OH; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Gary Sheffield, Waycross and Mike and Kelly Sheffield, Blackshear; his step-father, Norbert Garold Sheffield, Blackshear; two grandchildren, Amber Boatright and Taylor Preston; six nephews, James (Lacie) Sheffield, Christopher Sheffield, Adam and Kristy Sheffield, Shane Sheffield, Noah Welton and Andrew Mawrer; a niece, Brandy Harris; a great-nephew, Shane “Boogie” Sheffield Jr.; a special friend, Donna Deloach, Blackshear; a special buddy, David Peacock, Blackshear and several other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 12, from the Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Memorialization was by cremation.
