Sharon Diane Boyett Roberson

Sharon Diane Boyett Roberson, 56, of Blackshear, passed away early Thursday morning, August 10, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, following a short illness.
Born in Wayne County, she had lived in Pierce County and Hilton Head, SC for many years before moving back to Pierce County 10 years ago. She was a 1967 graduate of Patterson High School and was also a graduate of the LPN program at Ware Tech. She attended Armstrong State College in Savannah and received her nursing degree from the University of South Carolina Nursing Program. She had worked at the local hospital in Hilton Head along with Care One in Waycross. At the time of her death, she was Director of Nursing at the D. Ray James State Prison in Folkston. She had also been a member of the Kiwanis Club and was a daughter of the late LaForest Mulkey Boyett.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon E. Roberson, Blackshear; her father, Calvin Boyett and Juan Anderson, Patterson; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Gary Murray and Charlotte and Russell Thornton, both of Blackshear, Karen and Ray Crosby, Mershon and Michelle and Blaine Deal, Patterson; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Buddy and Dena Boyett, Laurel, MS, Malcolm and Tammy Boyett, Joseph and Pam Boyett and David Boyett, all of Patterson, Kelvin and Jan Boyett, Columbus and Tim and Rachel Boyett, Hortense; three sisters-n-law, Eula Peeler, Brunswick, Melvina Pittman, Waycross and Geraldine Cox, Patterson; a brother-n-law, William D. Roberson, Utah and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, from the Pine Grove Baptist Church.
iIntermentfollowed in the Laura Chapel Cemetery.
The medical staff of D Ray James State Prison served as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Satilla, 1921 Alice Street, Suite A-1, Waycross, GA 31501.

Helen S. Waters

Helen Waters, 76, of Blackshear, died Saturday morning, August 13, 2006, at the Satilla Care Center in Waycross after an extended illness.
A native of Ware County, she had lived all of her life in Pierce County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul N. Sweat and Mable Thomas Sweat.
She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear, the Followers Sunday School Class, and JOY Group.
She was a retired dental hygienist with Dr. Thomas and Dr. Proenza.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Brad Waters, Blackshear; a son, Johnny Waters (wife Karen), Lake Park; two grandchildren, Jada Scurlock (husband Jamie) and Brad Waters III, all of Lake Park; three brothers-in-law George Waters (wife Ruth), Alton Waters and Harold Waters (wife Annelle), all of Waycross, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

The Followers Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.

Robert Vonna Holton

Robert Vonna “Bobby” Holton, 67, of Douglas, passed away on Monday, August 7, 2007, at home after an extended illness.
A native of Coffee County, he was born February 10, 1939, as a son of the late Vonna George and Alice Mabelle Kirkland Holton. He was a retiree of CSX Railroad and operator of Carter’s Fried Chicken. He was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Douglas Holton, Douglas; a son, Andy (Sherryl) Holton, Douglas; daughters, Tammy Sue (David) DePratter Bell, Blackshear, Wendy Glynn (Charles) McConnell, Kingsland, Allison Renee Holton, Douglas, Mercedes Prevatt, Fitzgerald and Marie Primm, Las Vegas NV; a brother Kermit Holton and Kiler Holton, Las Vegas NV; an uncle, Kiler Kirkland, Nicholls; grandchildren, Sharee Holton, Bobby Holton, John Tyler Holton, Anthony DePratter, Eric DePratter, Kolby DePratter, Wren DePratter, Marcy Lewis, Jacob Holton, Missy Holton, Mackenzie Bradford and Lancelot Holton; great-grandchildren, Wednesday Lewis, Natalie Sheigh Lewis and Jordan Holton.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 10, from Sand Hill Baptist church near Douglas with the Rev. Stan Clough and the Rev. L. G. Aldridge officiating. Kolby DePratter gave the Eulogy. Soloist, Larry Lewis sang, “Beulah Land” and “The Anchor Holds” and the congregation sang, “How Great Thou Art” with Barbara Crews, pianist.
Graveside services followed in the Stokesville Church cemetery in Atkinson County, with the Rev. Herbert Box officiating.
Active pallbearers were Otis Douglas, John Cleland, Jason Keene, Cody Keene, Kasey Keene and Doug Douglas.
Honorary pallbearers were D. A. Douglas, Fred Douglas, Carroll Carter, Leonard Thrift, Kiler Kirkland, Junior Kirkland, Junior Stapleton, Berry Carter, Forrest Carter, James Carter and Jimmy Carter.
Sims Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Spurlock Peace

Betty Jean Spurlock Peace, 73, of Patterson died late Wednesday night, August 9, 2006, at the Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.
A native of Van, WV, she had lived several years in Hollywood, FL before moving to Patterson in 1979.
She was preceded in death by her father Harrison Spurlock and mother Delores Guthrie Spurlock.
She retired as a nurse from Satilla Regional Medical Center. She was a member at the Patterson Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Eastern Star for 51 years in Logan, WV and a member of the Day Lilly Fillies Chapter of the Red Hat Society of Waycross.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Hubert Peace, Patterson; two daughters Michelle Jean Poulsen, Blackshear and Tracee (Michael) Smith, Patterson; two sons Kim (Lesa) Herman of Belleview, FL and Michael (Candy) Herman, Belleview, FL; 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren; four sisters, Carrie Spurlock, Seattle, Wash., Ann Hamblin, Fayetteville, NC, Vicki Spurlock of Wisconsin, and Mary Alice Bowlby, Seattle, WA; four brothers Howard Spurlock of West Virginia., Edward Spurlock, Hartwell, Arthur Spurlock, Tucker, Dual Gene Spurlock of Wisconsin, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 13, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Martha Frances Ireland

Martha Frances Ireland, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was a native of Tifton but resided most of her life in Jacksonville, FL before moving to Waycross 16 years ago. She was the daughter of the late Judson Ray Ireland Sr. and Drue Willie Flowers Ireland. She was retired from retail sales.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Yarbrough (husband Wesley), Blackshear and Darlene Beecher, Waycross; a son, Dennis Sweat, Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Kelly Tuten, Blackshear, Bradley Yarbrough, Blackshear, Derek Beecher, Waycross, Terri Beecher, Waycross and Ciara Sweat, Jacksonville; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Poole and Austin Poole, both of Blackshear; two brothers, Dewell Ireland, Alabama and Dr. Ray Ireland, Phenix City, AL; a sister, Elanor Cannon, Tampa, FL; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, June 7) from the Music Funeral Home Chapel.

Clarence David Ammons

Clarence David Ammons, 94, of Bristol, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
A native of Wayne County, he had moved from Odum to Bristol six years ago. He retired from the railroad but had also served as a sheriff’s deputy in Pierce County in the late 1940s and as a county warden at the Pierce County Prison Camp. He was inducted into the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame for his boxing abilities. He had boxed under the name of “Kid Georgia Boy” in the late 30s and early 40s. In recent years, he had owned and operated a lawn care service. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the son of the late Asa and Annie Victoria Reddish Ammons and was also preceded in death by six sisters and seven brothers. He was a member of Ephesus Church of God near Bristol.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Thornton Ammons, Bristol; six daughters, Maxine King, Mary Ann (Benny) Guest, all of Offerman, Margie (Melvin) Smith, Melba (Jim) Byrd and Marie (Tracy) Thornton, all of Bristol and Vickie (Keith) Bowen of Dublin, seven sons, David “Buddy” Ammons, Danny (Betty) Ammons, all of Jesup, Donnie (Mary) Ammons, Blackshear, Deryl (Gail) Ammons, Offerman, Paul Ammons and Robert Ammons, both of Bristol and Joe (Brenda) Ammons, Wildwood FL; one sister, Lettie Bennett, Oakland Park FL; 34 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, from the Offerman Baptist Church.

Ailene Elizabeth Harris Chancey

Ailene Harris Chancey, 89, of Waycross passed away Tuesday evening, June 6, 2006, at her son’s residence in Folkston following an extended illness.
She was born in Waycross April 1, 1917 to the late William Jackson Harris and Edna Mary Hutto Harris. She was retired and a member of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church and had recently been attending Hosanna Church of Christ. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and time spent with her family. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Chancey Sr., two daughters, Mary Moody and JoNell Corbett; three brothers, L.B. Harris, Junior Harris and J.D. Harris, and three sisters, Margie Steedley, Wilene Hendrix, and Ruby Garmon.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin R. Chancey Jr., Waycross, Donald J. Chancey Sr., and his wife Brenda, Folkston, Gail Chancey, Folkston; 15 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 9, from the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.

James Edward Hickox

James Edward Hickox, 62, of Acworth died Tuesday, June 6, 2006.
A native of Blackshear, he had lived in Acworth for the past four years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served as an electrical mechanic during the Vietnam era. He ws the owner and operator of Hickox Construction Company for three years.
He was preceded in death by his father, A. Manor Hickox; his mother, Julia Hickox Crump; two sisters, Faye Hickox Paulson and Aline Hickox Wilson; a step-son, Tony Large and a brother-in-law, Clay Parker Jr.
Survivors include a son, Richard (Jeanette) Hickox, Rohnert Park, CA; two daughters, Debbie (Tom) George, Rohnert Park, CA and Sheri Hickox, Occodental, CA; a step-son, Johnny (Beth) Large, Acworth; a step-daughter, Julie Ann Merchant, Acworth; three grandchildren, Jasmine Hickox and Noah Hickox of Rohnert Park, CA; four step-grandchildren, Jesse, Jayda and Kaya Large of Acworth and Jolene Merchant of Acworth; two brothers, Freddie Hickox and Kenny Hickox, both of Waycross and a sister, Joan Parker, Blackshear.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, from the Georgia National Cemetery.
Collins Funeral Home of Acworth was in charge of arrangements.

Sonja Virginia Johnson Philson

Sonja Virginia Johnson Philson, 56, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 5, 2006 at her residence in Jacksonville.
A native of Ware County, she had lived most of her life in the Jacksonville area. She was a former apartment complex manager and had also attended North Jacksonville Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Willie Claude Johnson, who passed away in 2005.
Survivors include her son, Joseph Philson, Jacksonville, FL; her mother, Florrie Davis Johnson, Jacksonville; two sisters, Paulette (Marvin) Hodges and Shirley (Gerry) Sebastian, both of Jacksonville; three brothers, Danny (Vickie) Johnson, Larry (Robin) Johnson and Michael Johnson, all of Jacksonville and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.
