Ivory Janelle Hickox, 56, passed away Thursday morning, May 11, 2006, at the Waycross Health & Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Warner Robins for several years before moving back to Pierce County in the late 1970s. She was a para-professional for Concerted Services which showed her love for children and was also a former guard for the Ware State Prison. She was a member of the Blackshear Presbyterian Church and was a daughter of the late Hubert William Sloan, Sr. and Rena Faye Courson Proctor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Barry Hickox, a brother, Elbert Sloan and by her step-father, Dudley Proctor.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Hickox, Blackshear and Mark Hickox, Scholfeeld Barracks, HA; a sister, Connie Simmons, Waycross; five brothers, Jerry (Susan) Sloan, Blackshear, Jimmy (Marian) Sloan, Hartsville, SC, Robert (Glenda) Griffin, Douglas, and Tony (Michelle) Griffin and Hubert Sloan Jr., all of Blackshear; her step-mother, Leona Sloan of Blackshear and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, from the Blackshear Presbyterian Church.

James Otis ‘Jim’ Wildes Jr.
James Otis “Jim” Wildes Jr., 72, passed away late Saturday evening, May 13, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL following an extended illness.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he had lived in Pierce County since 1973. He attended high school in Kennebunk, ME prior to joining the service. He was a retired United States Air Force Master Sergeant with 22 years of service and had recently retired as an independent truck driver. He was a member of the Kings Bay Moose Lodge # 2418 and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He was also an avid golfer and member of the Lakeview Golf and Country Club. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge # 369 and was also a past commander of the American Legion Post 181.
He was the son of the late James Otis Sr. and Edith Anderson Wildes and was also preceded in death by a son, Jay William Wildes, and by a sister, Caroline Ruth Wildes.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dorothy Dixon “Dottie” Wildes, Blackshear; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Hebert, Montgomery, MA; two step-daughters and a step-son-in-law, Terri Dobson and Bonnie and Billy King, all of Middleburg, FL; a sister, Susan Wildes Turner, Portland, OR; seven grandchildren, Cory, Wendy, Keith, Jeremy, Kyle, Thomas and Ben; a great-grandchild, John and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, May 17) from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Loran F. Tuten Sr.
Loran F. Tuten Sr., 62, passed away late Tuesday evening, May 2, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he was a farmer and had also served as a Pierce County Commissioner for 18 years. He was a member of the Pierce County Farm Bureau and was a former member of the board of directors for Farm Credit. He was a member of the Bristol Baptist Church where he was in the Adult Sunday School Class and was a son of the late Ben F. and Myrtle Griffin Tuten. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Luther Tuten and Benjamin Tuten.
Survivors include his wife, Willene Davis Tuten, Bristol; a son and daughter-in-law, Loran Jr. and Melanie Tuten, Bristol; a daughter and son-in-law, Pennie and Ben Stovall, Blackshear; five sisters, Nela Winn, Callahan, FL, SueNell (Stanley) McDonald, Waycross, Elise (Jim) Geeslin, Greensboro, MS and Shirley Westberry and Cheryl Kelly, all of St. Augustine, FL; five grandchildren, Ben Tuten, Brett Tuten, Ansley Stovall, Clark Stovall and Emily Stovall and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 5, from the Bristol Baptist Church.

Lorraine Ann Manders
Lorraine Ann Manders, 58, of Blackshear died suddenly Thursday morning, May 4, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
She was a native of Altoona, PA, but had lived in Florida for many years before moving to Blackshear in 1974. She was preceded in death by her father, Franklin Louder and her mother, Iva Gene McLarty and a step-father, Ed McLarty.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Living River Church of God.
She was also a member of the Southern Band of the Cherokee, the “Deer Clan”. She was known as “Little Feather”.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Manders, Blackshear; two sons Brian Manders and Mike Manders (wife Dawn), all of Waycross; a daughter Michelle Riggins, (husband Jimmy), Blackshear; two step-sons Vernon Manders, Blackshear and Darien Manders (wife Cherrie), Bristol; a step-daughter Belinda Grant, (husband William), Blackshear, nine grandchildren Wendy Rowe and Hoke Grant both of Blackshear, Elizabeth and Jordan Manders of Bristol, Jake and Kobe Manders of Waycross, John Paul and Spencer Manders of Waycross and Cadi Riggins of Blackshear; three great-grandchildren, Luke Pittman and Leanne Rowe, both of Blackshear and T.J. Rowe of Fitzgerald; two brothers, Jim Louder (wife Carol) of Pennsylvania, and Bill Louder, (wife Dottie), Brasselton; a sister, Linda LaRue (husband Raymond), Mt. Airy, MD and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 8, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Jenniffer ‘Jenny’ T. Taylor
Jenniffer “Jenny” T. Taylor, 49, of Lake Butler, FL, passed away early Friday morning, May 5, 2006, at her residence following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Duval County, FL, she had grown up in Pierce County but had later moved to Cross City, FL where she had lived for many years before moving to Lake Butler seven months ago. She had worked on a chicken farm for many years and was of the Baptist faith.
She was a daughter of the late Howard Franklin Sr. and Virginia F. Durrance Taylor and was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry Durrance, her maternal grandparents, Jessie and Hattie Durrance and her paternal grandparents, William Taylor and Jenny Deen.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Jenniffer Durrance, Albany; a son, Allen Durrance of New York; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Arnold King of Blackshear and Mildred and Jerry Thompson of Waycross; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Bruce and Ann Dickson and Howard F. Taylor Jr., all of Lake Butler and Cecil J. Taylor, Gainesville, FL; an uncle, Master Sgt. (Ret) Cecil Adkins, Lake Butler and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7, from the Ramah Cemetery.

Margurette Smith Sullivan
Margurette Helen Smith Sullivan, 73, of Waycross died early Monday morning, May 8, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Ware County but had also spent many years in Central Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen Ernest Smith II and Susie Spivey Smith.
She was a retired real estate agent in Sanford, FL, and her family also owned and operated Lee’s Famous Recipe Fried Chicken in Georgia and Florida. She had the distinction of being listed in the Who’s Who of Women in the world during the 1980s.
She was a member of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church and was the last living charter member of the church. She was also a former Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Sullivan, Waycross; a daughter, Carla Scott Frazier (husband Ted), Port Orange, FL; a son, Craig Scott (wife Ellen), Waycross; two step-sons Scott Sullivan, Titusville, FL, and Kevin Sullivan, Hollywood, CA; a step-daughter, Pam Macdonald (husband Mike), Fredericksburg, VA; eight grandchildren Kris Griffin, Port Orange, FL, Scott Griffin (wife Melissa), Waycross, Mark Griffin, Waycross, B.J. Harich (wife Tricia), South Daytona Beach, FL, Kelly Scott, Naples, FL, Phillip Scott, Waycross, Jessica and Emily Macdonald, Fredericksburg, VA; three great-grandchildren, Corey, Jordan and Tristian; a brother, Fred E. Smith (wife Jeanette), Waycross; a sister Catherine Barber (husband Horace), Waycross, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, May 10) from the Sweat Memorial Baptist Church.

Arrie Thomas Asbell
Arrie Bell Thomas Asbell, 70, of Waycross died Tuesday morning, April 25, 2006, at Baptist Village in Waycross following an extended illness.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Ware County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Asbell and her parents, Paul Thomas and Bessie Hunter Thomas.
She retired from Gateway Restaurant after many years of service and she attended Living River Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Bell Thomas, Homerville; a special friend Lois Rigdon (husband Ernest), Waycross, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A private graveside service will be held at Mt. Green Church of God of Prophecy at a later date.
Memorialization was by cremation.

DeAlva ‘Dede’ Bennett Roberts
DeAlva “DeDe” Bennett Roberts, 88, of Blackshear died Tuesday evening, April 25, 2006, at Baptist Village after an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Roberts Jr.; her parents, James Lawton Bennett and Mamie James Bennett; a grandson, Scotty Roberts and two brothers, J. N. Bennett and Dorsey Bennett.
She was a homemaker and a longtime active member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear. She was a member of the Alert Sunday School Class and the women’s ministries of the church. She was also a member of the Blackshear Womans Club.
Survivors include her two sons, James L. Roberts (wife Dottie) and Barry Roberts (wife Ellen), all of Blackshear; four grandchildren, Jay Roberts (wife Laura) and Johnathan Roberts, all of St. Simons Island, Jenifer Roberts, Savannah and Chris Roberts (wife Kami), Blackshear; two brothers, J.L. Bennett Jr., Mershon and Harold Bennett (wife Mary), Mershon; three sisters, Adeline Meeker (husband Everett), Danville, IL, Mamie Severin (husband Reed), Waycross, Melda Van Iderstyne (husband Dick), Jekyll Island; a sister-in-law Oletha Bennett, Mershon; brother-in-law, J.R. Black, Abilene, TX, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear.

Vera Lee Bowen Wall
Vera Lee Bowen Wall, 95, of Blackshear, passed away early Thursday morning, April 27, 2006, at the Pierce County Nursing Home in Blackshear.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she was a homemaker and was also a member of the Blackshear First Baptist Church where she was in the Alathean Sunday School Class. She had also been a member of the Center Hill Homemakers Club for more than 50 years. She was a daughter of the late William Stephen and Addie Sue Youmans Bowen and was also preceded in death by her husband, Durwood Wall; two brothers, Madison Bowen and W. S. “Buddy” Bowen, and also by a grandson, Neal Wall Jr.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Vera Sue and Jake Popham, Blackshear; two sons and daughters-in-law, Neal Edward and Beverly Wall, Savannah and William and Ann Wall, Blackshear; a sister, Myrtle Bowen Powers, Blackshear; 10 grandchildren, Sidney Wall, Sandra Wall, Debbie Gilleon, Bill Wall, David Wall, Connie Moore, Diane Davis, Mark Popham, Joey Popham and Gina Hutto; 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, from the Blackshear First Baptist Church.
