Winnie C. Green, 70, of 1974 Hacklebarney Lane, Blackshear, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital, Jesup, after an extended illness.
A native of Gwinnett County, she had lived most of her life in Ware County. She was a retired housewife and a Baptist by faith.
Survivors include her ex-husband, Offie Rowell, Blackshear; three sons Larry Henderson and Douglas Henderson, both of Beaufort, and Ricky Hayes, Jesup; one daughter Renee Swords, Blackshear; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23, from the Carter Funeral Home, Gordon-Harrison Chapel in Jesup with Brother Warren Williams officiating.

Naomi Bechiom Harrell
Naomi Bechiom Harrell, 68, passed away, Thursday, April 20, 2006, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
A native of Appling County, she had lived in Pierce County for many years. She was a nurse’s aide and attended Waresboro Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Arron and Ida Ivey Bechiom and was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Wimberly Sr.
Survivors include a daughter, Crystal Smith, Blackshear; four sons, Anthony Daraphane, Darren Cornett and Edward Earl Wimberly, all of Blackshear and Eugene Wimberly, Waycross; a sister, Bertie Morris, Brandon, MS; two brothers, Robert Bechiom and Joe Bechiom, both of Waycross; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, from the graveside at the Patterson Cemetery.
Memorialization is by cremation.

Mary Ezzell Miedema
Mary Ezzell Miedema, 94, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday morning, April 20, 2006.
Born in Tallahassee, FL, she was a daughter of the late John Frank Sr. and Mary Harman Ezzell and was also preceded in death by a brother, John Frank Ezzell Jr.
Survivors include her husband, James F. “Jim” Miedema, former pastor and educator in Georgia and Florida, of Blackshear; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and James H. Wagnon, Van Buren, AR and god-children, Diane and A. J. Strickland, Patterson.
She served quietly but efficiently in educational organization and as curriculum specialist in churches her husband pastored: First Baptist Church, Terra Ceia, FL; Dice Baptist Church, Weatherford, TX; First Baptist Church, Greenacres, FL; Haverhill Baptist Church, West Palm Beach, FL; Norwich Street Baptist Church, Brunswick, GA and Interim Pastor — Life Tabernacle, Lake Worth, FL. She was employed by the prominent law firm of Hamilton, James, Merkle & Young for several years before her retirement. She has been a blessing to all the lives she touched and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. this morning ( Wednesday, April 26), from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Elsie Jeanette Jenkins
Elsie Jeanette Jenkins, 62, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Waycross Health and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.
A busy life came to a close, when she was called to her heavenly home.
She was the oldest of five children of the late Alexander Young Sr. and Elberta Johnson Young. She was born August 29, 1943 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Her Christian journey began at an early age at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. W. Payne. After relocating to Waycross, she joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. J. W. Dixon. She served faithfully on the usher ministry.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Willie Jenkins Sr. To this union two children were born, Willie Jenkins and Darrin Jenkins.
One sister, Emma Young and one brother, Alexander Young Jr., preceeded her in death.
Her legacy lives on in the cherished memories of her beloved sons Willie Jenkins and Darrin Jenkins, both of Thomasville; one sister, Nettie Williams, and one brother, Vonnell Young, both of Waycross; four aunts Leola Jackson, New York; Agnes Wade and Jewell Lewis, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Nola Mae Lander, Waycross; two uncles Russell (Pat) Lewis, Cairo, and George (Katie) Lewis, Tallahassee, FL; one sister-in-law Emma Young, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; five nieces, Tumara Bell, Kersaundra Young, Atlanta, Regina Young and Kimberly Young, both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Lisa Fisher, Thomasville; three nephews Vonnell Young Jr., and Marc Young, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Ramon Williams, Waycross; a special cousin, Lovetta Thomas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two god-sisters Ruth Pekins, Waycross, and Daphine Wright, Pompano, FL; four grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 15, from the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Waycross, with the Rev. Roosevelt Rhone, pastor and the Rev. J. Stephon Deen, eulogist, officiating.

Lollie Mae Joyner Beverly
Lollie Mae Joyner Beverly, 84, of Waycross, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Baptist Village after a lengthy illness.
She was native of Hortense but had resided most of her life in Waycross. She was the wife of the late James Thomas “J.T.” Beverly for 59 years. She was the daughter of the late Tollie Thomas Joyner and Aleen Davis Joyner. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Phillip Cribb and three sisters and four brothers.
She was a homemaker and a member of Winona Park United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Fidelia Sunday Sunday School Class.
She was a beloved mother and grandmother to three daughters, Annette Clark (husband J.L.), Marianna, FL, Angelyn Cribb and Carolyn Gibson (husband John) all of Waycross; eight grandchildren, Chris Clark (wife Linda), Marianna, FL, Jill Shuler (husband Sammy), Bristol, FL, Jay Clark (wife Tiffany), Marianna, FL, Penny Alhalaseh (husband Younis), Bristol, FL, Dana Dixon (husband Mark), Blackshear, Amanda Swenson (husband Todd), Visalia, CA, Thomas Gibson, Athens and Ben Gibson, Waycross and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 15, from the Music Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial followed in the Greenlawn cemetery in Ware County.

James Colton Batten Sr.
James Colton Batten Sr., 66, of West Monroe, Louisiana (formerly of Blackshear), died Friday April 14, 2006 after an extended illness.
He was a native of Pierce County but had lived most of his adult life in Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Batten and Ella Dubberly Batten and by an infant son. He was a 1958 graduate of Blackshear High School and attended Clemson University on a football scholarship but also played baseball and ran track.
He was retired from Phillips Electronics Pharmaceutical Industrial Corp. after 30 years of service. Phillips Electronics was responsible for the Polio vaccine.
Survivors include two daughters, Kim Batten of Florida and Wendy Lane (husband Rusty), Albany; three sons, Jamie Batten (wife Sonya), Louisiana, and Colt Batten and Trey Batten, both of Leesburg; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother, Clyde Batten, Orange Park, FL; two sisters, Peggy Holder, Vidalia, and Mary Henry, Jesup and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at noon Monday, April 17, from the St. John’s Methodist Church Cemetery.

Infant Destiny Rebecca Strickland
Infant Destiny Rebecca Strickland of Blackshear, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006, at the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah cradled in the arms of her mommy and daddy.
Born January 30, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center, she is the twin sister of Dalton Strickland and the daughter of Rodney and Amy Roberson Strickland, all of Blackshear. Destiny is also the sister of Dylan Strickland of Blackshear. Her other relatives are maternal grandparents, Jim and Belva Roberson, Waycross; paternal grandfather, Horace Strickland, Blackshear; maternal great-grandmothers, Mavis Griffin and Polly Roberson both of Waycross; her paternal-great grandmother, Ollie Crews, Racepond, and several other loving relatives including her aunts, uncles and cousins.
Destiny was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Becky Kirkland Johnson.
Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 17, from the graveside at the Rehobeth Cemetery.

Johnnie Perdie Courson
Johnnie Perdie Courson, 70, of Argyle died Friday morning, April 14, 2006 at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross after an extended illness.
He was a native of Pierce County and lived in Argyle for the past 28 years. He was retired from Brockway Standard in Homerville and enjoyed country music and gardening. His parents were the late James Isaac Courson and Lovie J. Boatright Courson. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Glenda Courson, Carolyn Bennett and one brother, Vernon Courson.
Survivors include his wife, Wylene Arnold Courson, Argyle; two daughters, Karen Monfils (husband Ron), Charleston, SC, Lisa Brammell (husband Robert), Charleston, SC; one brother, Windell Courson (wife Shinok), Fredericksburg, VA; two sisters, Juanita Bullard, Blackshear, Nell Prescott (husband W.R.), Hilliard, FL; six grandchildren, Lee Jones, Cliff Jones, Joseph Jones, Forrest Brammell, Chloe Brammell, Isabelle Brammell; seven great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Jimmy Harper, Argyle and Johnny Harper, Lakeland; three step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 17, from the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.

Bernice Jones Gillis
Bernice Cornelius Jones Gillis, 75, of Waycross died early Monday morning, April 17, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, following an extended illness.
A native of Ware County, she had lived most of her life in Ware and Pierce Counties. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel David Jones and Macy Smith Jones and by two brothers, Nathan Jones and Simon Jones.
She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include her husband Marion Gillis, Waycross; two daughters, Cathy Wilkerson, Waycross and Shirley McClain (husband Raymond), Newnan; two sons, Steve Pickett, Macon and Dale Galloway (wife Marsha Ann), Montgomery, AL; a step-son, Ernie Athey (wife Gail) Salisbury, NC; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister Ophelia Sharpe, Mershon; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Allagood (husband William), Blackshear and Joanne Jones, Blackshear, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, April 19), from the Martha Memorial Church Cemetery.

Anne Register Jones
Anne Register Jones, 80, of Atlanta, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
She was married
for 50 years to Boisfeuillet Jones, civic leader and first president of the Robert W. Woodruff Foundations, who died in 2001.
A native of Fitzgerald, she was the daughter of John C. and Claudia Lucas Register. She graduated from Agnes Scott College where she served as a trustee for 11 years. A recipient of the Service to the College Award, she was honored as trustee emerita by the Board. The annual Leadership Conference is named in her honor.
She served on the boards of the Atlanta Y.W.C.A., the Northwest Council of Girl Scouts, and the Emory University Woman’s Club. An avid tennis player, she participated in A.L.T.A. for many years. She was a member of the High Museum, Atlanta History Center, Fernbank Science Center, Atlanta Advocates for the C.D.C. Foundation, and for over 50 years, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and “The Wednesday Ladies.”
Survivors include her daughter, Laura Jones Hardman, married
to Dr. John B. Hardman, Atlanta; son, Boisfeuillet Jones Jr., married
to Barbara Pendleton Jones, Washington, D.C.; grandchildren Laura Hardman Collins, married
to John R. Collins; John Hardman; Hill Hardman; Lindsay Jones and Teddy Jones; a brother, Jack Register, married
to Frances Massee Register, Blackshear; a niece, Claudia Register, and grandniece, Hilary Bouwsma, Cleveland, NC; and a nephew, John Register, of Brunswick.
The body was willed to the Emory University School of Medicine.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6 from the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
