Phillip Mathis
Phillip Mathis, 48, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at his residence.
He was born November 30, 1957 in Miami, FL, to Oscar Mathis and Ethel Mae Hoskins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Ethel Mae Hoskins; two sons, Phillip A. Mathis Jr., and Jeramy Mathis; three daughters, Kimberly Jaggernauth (Daryn); Andrea Mathis and Phyllis Mathis, all of Miami, FL; six sisters, Linda Mathis, Mary Mathis, Elaine Mathis, Carrie Mathis, Iris Hudson (Gary) and Victoria Mathis; one brother, Oscar Mathis Jr.; two uncles, James Hoskins (Silvia) and Benjamin Hoskins (Clara); one aunt Dorothy Brown (Willie); two nieces, Felisa and Mary; a nephew Tillman; two great nieces, Coutney and Tenisha; a great nephew, Tillman Jr. and other relatives and friends including Deborah and her seven kids.
Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. (today) Wednesday, January 18, from the chapel of Rainge Memorial Chapel, Inc., in Blackshear.
Burial followed in the Andersonville National Military cemetery in Andersonville.

Rose Shirlene Ennis
Rose Shirlene Ennis, 67, of Waycross died Tuesday night at Kindred Hospital of Atlanta.
She was born in Screven, to the late Oley Andrew Altman and Mary Adel Gordon Altman and had made her home in Ware County since 1984. She had resided in the Pierce County Nursing Home for the past seven years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Rufus L. Ennis, two grandchildren, two brothers, Frank Altman, Gene Altman, and a sister, Betty Ennis.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald L. Ennis and his wife Christina, Fred D. Ennis, Tommy L. Ennis, all of Waycross, Ted W. Ennis and his wife Ellen, Blackshear; two daughters, Sharon M. Ennis, Waycross, Cindy Altman and her husband Timmy, Manchester; three sisters, Mildred Powell, Waycross, Nell Vincent, Statesboro, Roshell Wimberly, Waycross; a brother, Andrew Altman, Blackshear, 17 grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 30, from the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.

Macie Miller Dasher
Macie Miller Dasher, 90, of Screven, passed away late Monday evening, December 26, 2005, at the Pierce County Nursing Home following several months of declining health.
A native and life-long resident of Wayne County, she was a farm-wife. She was a member of the Salem Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, the Adult Bible Study Class and the Love Thy Neighbor Club. She also enjoyed substitute teaching, reading and selling World Book Encyclopedias. She was a daughter of the late Isham T. and Sally Robertson Miller and was also preceded in death by her husband, Deron W. Dasher; three sisters and five brothers.
Survivors are a daughter, Lequita Baylor, Fowler, CO; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jackie Dasher, Jacksonville, FL; a special nephew, Ricky (Carol) Miller of West Virginia; a sister, Elizabeth Pearson Manning, Blackshear; six grandchildren, DeAnn Eaton (Steve) Azar, DiAnn (Michael) Bourget, Sandra Jean (Richard) Herrell, Carrie (Chris) Brown, Leigh Ann Jara and Deron (Wendy) Dasher; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, other nephews and relatives.
Funeral were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 29, from the Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Screven with Elder Scott Riner and Elder Roland Waters officiating.

Mayor Joseph Pratt ‘Petesy’ Barnard
Mayor Joseph Pratt “Petesy” Barnard, 56, of Patterson, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2006, at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL, following a lengthy illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he was the Mayor of Patterson and was also a member of the Patterson Methodist Church. He was a 1967 graduate of Patterson High School and a 1971 graduate of Georgia Southern University. He was a former boys and girls basketball coach and assistant football coach for Patterson High School and was a former director of the Recreation Department for Blackshear. Working with kids was his love as it was shown in all he did.
Survivors include his two sons, Reese Barnard, Statesboro and James Rhett Barnard, Patterson; his parents, J. P. and Tiny Martin Barnard, Patterson; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Claire and Duward Boatright, Bristol; a niece, Claire Boatright, Bristol; two nephews, Duward (Nancy) Boatright Jr. and James Barrett Boatright, all of Bristol; a great-nephew, Duward Boatright III, Bristol; several aunts, uncles and cousins and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, from the Patterson Baptist Church.
Entombment will be at a later date in the Patterson Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were City of Patterson employees, councilmen and police along with former men and women basketball players for Patterson High School during 1972-1974.

Iva Lee King McAlpin
Iva Lee King McAlpin, 90, of Waycross, passed away Friday morning, December 30, 2005, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home in Waycross.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Florida for many years before moving back to Pierce County in 1999. She and her late husband owned and operated Ben’s Grocery Store in Sneads, FL for many years. She was a member the Waycross Primitive Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Rhoda Dowling King and was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin McAlpin, who passed away in 1987 and a son, Tracy Godwin, who passed away in 1969.
Survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Elmo and Betty Godwin, Callahan, Fl and William Godwin, Blackshear; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 1, 2006, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Raymond George Barnard
Raymond George Barnard, 53, of Blackshear died Sunday afternoon, January 1, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, FL after an extended illness.
He was a native of Waycross and lived in many places around the country during his time in the United States Army, where he served in the Vietnam War and with the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1991 he retired from the United States Army and he and his wife moved to Blackshear. He was of the Baptist faith. His parents were the late John Barnard and Trudy Smith Barnard. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Barnard Nutt, an infant brother, one brother, J.D. Barnard, and one sister, Connie Johns.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, JoAnn Williams Barnard, Blackshear; one daughter, Raquel Lee, Brunswick; one son, Raymond G. Barnard II (wife Kim), Blackshear; one son-in-law, Eric Lee; six grandchildren, Michelle Waldron, Ben Waldron, Hannah Nutt, Sarah Nutt, Trevor Moore and McKenzie Lee; two great-grandchildren, Mya Palmer and Carmen Palmer; three sisters, Darcelle McDaniels, Waycross, Jeanette Ryals, Denton, Gloria Peacock (husband Franklin), Waycross; one brother, Jerry Barnard, Blackshear, two special dogs, Cinnamon and Sugar and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 6, from the University Boulevard Church of God.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 5 at the funeral home.

Roy Shon Thornton
Roy Shon Thornton, 68, of Patterson, died suddenly, Thursday, December 29, 2005, in Jasper, Florida while working in the logging business.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he was a skidder operator for the Shon Thornton Logging Company and was of the Church of God faith. He was a son of the late Lawton Andrew and Mae Griffin Thornton and was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Edith and David King, and a brother, Gilbert Thornton.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Aldridge Thornton, Patterson; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and David Futch, Homerville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Shon “Peanut” and Valerie Thornton, Lawton “Whitey” and Jennie Thornton and Shane and Becky Thornton, all of Offerman; three sisters, Barbara Mobley and Betty Guy, both of Patterson and Margaret Roberts, Charlotte, NC; four brothers, Joseph Thornton, James D. Thornton, Gustine Thornton and James T. Thornton, all of Patterson; 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 1, 2006, from the Offerman Church of God.

Lucille Aspinwall Chancey
Lucille Aspinwall Chancey, 97, of Offerman passed away late Monday evening, January 2, 2006, following a short illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she had worked for the Spatola Shoe Factory and was also a housewife. She was a member of the Offerman Baptist Church where she was in the Ladies Sunday School Class. She was very active in her community and was also the co-author of The History of Offerman. She was the daughter of the late Allen Jackson and Nora Kelly Aspinwall and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ephriam Chancey, who passed away in 1987 and by her daughter, Barbara Chancey Walker, who passed away in 1994.
Survivors are three grandchildren, Don (Debbie) Walker and Susanne W. Dasher, all of Rincon and Kelly Walker, Front Royal, VA; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Walker and Alexis Floyd, both of Rincon; a special niece, Gloria (Bill) Ward, Jesup and several other nieces, nephews and relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, from the Offerman Baptist Church.

Visitation for Mrs. Chancey will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 4 at the funeral home.

Joseph Wayne Brigman Sr.
Joseph Wayne Brigman Sr., 58, of Blackshear died suddenly Sunday afternoon, January 1, 2006, at the Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.
He was a native of Bacon County and lived many years there before moving to Pierce County in 1970. He was preceded in death by his parents W.F. “Dub” Brigman Jr. and Cassie Peacock Brigman.
He retired from CSX Railroad as an electrician. After his retirement he returned to school and received his bachelors degree from Valdosta State and became a school teacher. He was formerly employed with the Pierce County board of education as a teacher at Pierce County Middle School. For many years he coached the middle school football, baseball and girls softball teams at the middle school. He was also very active in the Blackshear Tiger Football program where he coached for 19 years. He was also the former “Voice of the Bears” on the radio.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during Vietnam where he received a Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart.
He was also a member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie Mattox Brigman, Blackshear; a daughter, Mysti Walker (husband James), Waycross, a son, Joseph Wayne Brigman, Jr. (wife Jessica Paige), Atlanta; a brother, Wanice Brigman (wife Rhonda), Alma, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 5 at First Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, January 4, at Smith Funeral Home in Blackshear.
The family requests all former players be honorary pallbearers and are asked to be at the church at 2:45 p.m.
