James Bazley ‘Jamie’ Carter III
James Bazley “Jamie” Carter III, 20, of Brantley County, died unexpectedly Thursday evening December 15, 2005.
He was born November 19, 1985 in Dublin. He was preceded in death by his great-grand parents, Bazley (for which he was named) and Bessie Carter, and Silas and Elvera Lee. He was loved by many other relatives including his great-grandma, Darcille Walker. Jamie was loved and respected by everyone. He will be missed by many.
A 2004 honor graduate of Brantley County High School, he was a member of the Heron football and baseball teams. He was the catcher for the very successful Heron baseball team and helped lead his team to several region championships, and a state runner-up bid. During his baseball career he received several honors including Georgia High School Player of the week, Defensive player of the year and Most Valuable Player award. His baseball career began early on as he was a member of two state championship baseball teams known as the “Mighty Mites”. He attended one year of college at South Georgia College on a baseball scholarship where he played catcher for the Tiger baseball team. He excelled academically while attending South Georgia having been named to the dean’s list. He had just completed fall semester at Coastal Community College.
He was a member of the Honor Society and he received the SAR award during his senior year of school. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
He was very interested in politics. He served as an intern for Representative Jack Kingston in Washington, D.C. in 2003.
Survivors include his parents, James and Johnna Carter, Brantley County and Tammy and Michael Flannery, Blackshear; two brothers, Brandon Groover (wife Jenny), Hoboken and Walker Lee Carter, Waycross; one sister, Allison Spivey, Dothan, AL and two nephews, Zane Groover and Tyler Allen; his grandparents, James B. and Carolyn Carter, Hoboken, Clyde and Barbara Aldridge, Brantley County, Don and JoAnn Pynes, Cottonwood, AL, James Griffin and Delane Griffin, Waycross; a special friend, Allison Corbett, Waycross.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 19, from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

Douglas Eugene ‘Doug’ Gill Sr.
Douglas Eugene “Doug” Gill Sr., 29, of Jesup, died Friday evening December 16, 2005, from injuries he received in a trucking accident in Wayne County.
Born in Pierce County, he had lived most of his life here. He had worked at Wal-Mart but was working for J & R trucking at the time of his death. He was a member of Offerman Baptist Church, a graduate of Pierce County High class of 1996, an avid hunter and fisherman and was also NASCAR and football fan. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Harriett “Granny Dix” Dixon.
Survivors include his wife Sonya Mechelle Tankersley Gill, Jesup; a daughter, Tonya Leigh Gill, Pierce County; a son Douglas Eugene “DJ” Gill, Pierce County; his parents Floyd and Mary Dixon Gill, Patterson; a sister, Marsha Gill, Patterson; his father and mother-in-law, J.R. and Marliese Tankersley, Jesup; a sister-in-law, Polly Anna Tankersley, Jesup, grandparents-in-law, Harry and Donnie Lynn, Jesup and numerous aunts and uncles and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 19, from the Offerman Baptist Church.

Reams Iverson ‘Ivan’ Farley
Reams Iverson “Ivan” Farley, 72, of Blackshear, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2005, at his residence.
A native of Springfield, TN, he had lived in Pierce County most of his adult life. He was a carpenter and had worked for Guerdon Industries Mobile Homes manufacturer. He was also a member of West Carswell Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and was an avid hunter. He was a son of the late Thomas I. and Maude Beatrice Allen Farley and was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Raymer, and two brothers, James Farley and Arthur Ray Farley.
Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Strickland Farley, Blackshear; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vonnie and Tim Wilson, Salisbury, NC, Debra and Jesse Crosby, Hoboken and Michelle and Ritt Rittenhouse, Millwood; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Owen and Donna Farley, Waycross and Rory Farley, Blackshear; a sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Troy Shelton, Smyrna, TN; a brother, Ervin Farley, Huntington, WV; 10 grandchildren, Josh Farley, Cody Durr, Kevin Wilson, Carey Thrift, Mikela Rittenhouse, Melissa Lamberth, Kaleb Rittenhouse, Harley Henderson, Chris Thrift and Katie Rittenhouse; two great grandchildren, Alexis Lamberth and Gunter Thrift; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, December 21, ) from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

James Harvey Thornton
James Harvey Thornton, 78, of Bristol, died Friday evening, December 16, 2005 at his residence, following an extended illness.
A native and life-long resident of Appling County, he was a former employee of Atlantic Coastline Railroad, a lifelong farmer and former owner of Thornton Grocery on Highway 15 and 121. He was a Christian.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Waunell Denison Thornton, Bristol; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Willis Griffis, Jesup, Juanita Dykes Navarez, Waycross, Shirley and Ronnie Thornton, Odum and Lori and R. Hayden Rozier II, Screven; a sister, Ruby Thornton, Bristol; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerome amd Ann Thornton, Bristol; six grandchildren, Mary Vaughn, James Robert Dykes IV, Christopher Michael Dykes, Angela Thornton, Randall H. Rozier III and Lorielle C. Rozier and three great-grandchildren, Matthew Vaughn, Joshua Dykes and Cooper R. Dykes and several nieces and nephews.

Edgar Farmer Sr.
Edgar Farmer Sr., 73, of Blackshear, passed away late Monday afternoon, December 5, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Savannah.
Born in Mississippi, he had lived in Pierce County for the last several years. He had been a truck driver with D & M Trucking and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church where he had been a Sunday school teacher, treasurer and was involved with the nursing home ministry. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War, was a member of the NRA and loved to read. He was a son of the late Hosie and Ella Broome Farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Willia Dean Mobley Farmer, Blackshear; five daughters, Debbie Hancock, Jackson, MS, Patricia Thornton, Hattiesburg, MS, Sonya (Steve) Scott, Richmond Hill, Teresa (James) Stewart, Hardeeville, SC and Lisa (Michael) Wright, Hollywood, FL; six sons, Ronnie (Mary) Farmer, San Diego, CA, Edgar Jr. (Martha) Farmer, Waycross, Danny (Joyce) Farmer, McComb, MS, Paul (Cindy) Farmer, Blackshear and Jeff (Sheila) Horton and Lambert (Jeannine) Horton, all of Baxley; four sisters, Winnie Dilmore, Clinton, MS, Ollie Mae Anding, Pearl, MS, Katherine (Clyde) Spencer, Fernwood, MS and Sarah Ruth (Bill) Helms, Calhoun City, MS; two brothers, Edward Farmer, McComb and J. Dorothy Anita Chancey
Dorothy Anita Chancey, 60, of Offerman, passed away late Wednesday evening, December 7, 2005, at the Kindred Hospital in Atlanta following a long illness.
Born in Wayne County, she had lived most of her life in Pierce County. She was a cosmetologist and owner of Nita’s Beauty Shop which she had owned for over 25 years until ill health forced her to retire. She was a member of the Offerman Baptist Church where she was in the Faith Sunday School Class. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Nita” to many children throughout the community and had her own “telephone ministry” where she would call everyone on their birthday and also call those in need of prayer. She was a daughter of the late Ander Mauldin and Dorothy Adeline Johnson Chancey and was also preceded in death by her brother, Lyndell Chancey.
Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye and Lowell King, Starke, FL and Charlotte and Travis Thrift, Blackshear; a niece, Shawn (Brian) Smith; four nephews, Barry (Stephanie) King, Bryan (Alicia) Crews, Shannon (Sharon) King and Brad Crews; five great-nieces, Lindsey Bollinger, Shayna King, Sarah-Beth King, Angelee Crews and Parker Smith; three great-nephews, Zachary King, Caleb King and Ty Crews; a great-great-nephew, Kevin Crawford and several other relatives.

John Darwin Swain Sr.
John Darwin Swain Sr., 59, died Saturday morning, December 10, 2005, in Bacon County from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Waycross. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles David Swain and Allie Clara Mercer Swain, and by a sister, Evelyn Winn.
He was a retired truck driver and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his two sons, John Darwin Swain Jr. and Billy Swain (wife Paula) all of Waycross; two grandsons, Jonathan Isac Swain and John Tyler Swain, both of Waycross; four brothers, Gene Swain (wife Diane), Savannah, Jessie Swain, Waycross, David E. Swain (wife Nellie), Blackshear, and Willie Alton Swain, Atlanta, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 12, from the Church of New Beginnings in Blackshear.
Memorialization will be by cremation.

Monteen Roberson
Monteen Roberson, 90, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, following an extended illness.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blackshear. She was the daughter of the late Flem and Georgia Bryson Bennett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Roberson; a son, Darrell Roberson, and two sisters, Irma Martin and Faye Courson.
Survivors include two sons, Ray (Gloria) Roberson and Wayne (Cheryl) Roberson, all of Blackshear; five grandchildren Pam (David) Hickox, Blackshear, Rob (Traci) Roberson, Folkston, Casey (Jennifer) Roberson, Blackshear, Nathan (fiancé Alicia) Roberson, Valdosta and Nick Roberson, Blackshear; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Joshua, Ansley and Eliza. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 1 from the Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Mays officiating.

Hazel Bagley
Hazel Bagley, 90, passed away Monday, November 28, 2005 at Community Hospice Hadlow Center.
Born in Waycross, March 25, 1915, to the late Ponce de Leon and Adel Knight, she had been a resident of Jacksonville for the last 49 years, and was a member of Ben James Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Arthur R. Bagley and by a daughter, Shirley Powers.
Surviving are her children, Curtis Bagley, Larry Bagley and Calvin Bagley, all of Jacksonville, Gary Bagley, Blackshear; devoted granddaughter, Michelle Davis; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, from the Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home Chapel.
