Alphia Mills Hughes
Graveside services for Alphia Mills Hughes of Little Rock, Ariz. were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the Oakgrove Cemetery in McRae.
Hughes, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.
A native of Conway, Ariz., she was born Oct. 15, 1914 to the late King Lewis Mills and Nettie Treece Mills and was the widow of Charles Hughes.
She was a retired Librarian at Armstrong College in Savannah, Ga. and moved to Little Rock after the passing of her husband.
Survivors include her niece, Myra H. Axtell; three nephews, Brad Mills, Louis Mills III and Hank Winn; and great-nieces and nephews.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.
Maggie Bell Stewart McIver
Services for Maggie Bell Stewart McIver were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 at Little Zion Baptist Church in Broxton with interment in the Benjamin Chapel Cemetery in Wray.
The Rev. L. H. Mobley officiated.
McIver, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. George Stewart Sr. and Odessia Walker Stewart of Telfair County and was the widow of the Rev. John McIver Sr.
She accepted Christ at an early age and exhibited strong Christian beliefs. She was married on Nov. 27, 1949. They were blessed with 10 children, four daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Survivors include six sons, Alfred and wife Patricia McIver, John McIver Jr., George and wife Sherry McIver, Rega and wife Judy McIver, Marvin and wife Denise McIver and Johnnie McIver; four daughters, Annie McIver, Clara and husband Roland Lott, Hazel McIver and Jenny McIver; two sisters, Pheobe Dollar of Jacksonville, Fla. and Annie Maude Patton of McRae; one brother, Roosevelt and wife Thelma Stewart of Jacksonville, Ga. and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends.
The congregation enjoyed the following hymns: “A Charge to Keep I Have” lead by Dea. Wiley Schley and “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” lead by Dea. Willie Scretchen. Honorary Pallbearers were Bryant Huff, Raymond Brown and Ministers and Deacons of Various Churches.
Active pallbearers were Miles Newton, John Williams, Rodney Suggs, Ricky Threat, Pernell Smith, Ernest Smith, Gary Smith and George Smith.
McIver Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.
Eddie Cherenia McRae Sweeney
Services for Eddie Cherenia McRae Sweeney were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Glovers Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Helena with interment in the Helena Cemetery.
The Rev. Joseph McLeod Sr. officiated.
Sweeney, 92, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. She was the daughter of the late Alberta Johnson and Eli McRae, and was married to the late Dallas Sweeney.
A native of Telfair County, she was a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Helena, where she was a faithful member. As a young adult ‘Eddie C.’ moved away from Telfair County to work and travel. After 50 years, Dallas and Eddie Sweeney moved back to Telfair County, where she renewed her membership at her home church.
Sweeney was loved and respected by many, always willing to listen, give cheerful advice and lend a helping hand.
Survivors include, Hazel McRae (daughter/cousin); Marcia Gabriel (goddaughter); Lonina McRae (cousin); other cousins, Ronald Dotson, Kiah Jones, Jimmy McCrimmion, Mattie McCrimmion, Sandra McCrimmion; also special sons and daughters, Yulonda Austin, Sue Briley, Bernard Cook, Barbara and Horace Grant, Harold Lewis, James Lewis, Debra McRae, Shirley Shoemake, Archie Williams, Mary and Ira Zanders, and a host of friends.

Clifford E. Lang
Services for Clifford E. Lang of Easton, Pa. were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Helena with interment in the Helena Cemetery.
The Rev. E. Neal Dixon officiated.
Lang, 62, died Sunday, April 23, 2006. He was the son of Christine Coates Whitten and the late George Lang and was married to Dorothy Stone Lang.
Born in Florida, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and worked as a mechanic and union shop steward at Atlantic States for 30 years. He was last employed by AKAB in Easton, Pa.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include his brothers, David (Gussie) Whitten of Eastman, George (Lallie) Lang of Watkinsville, Frank (LeTasha) Lang Sr. of Moultrie and Mark (Pauline) Whitten of Powder Springs; sisters, Alice McGill, Elvira (Tim) Perry, and June (Barry) Williams, all of Albany and Evelyn (Thomas) Claude of Carrolton, Texas; an adopted daughter, Latacha Davis, and an adopted granddaughter, Naje Marshall, both of Easton, Pa.; father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Coates Sr. of Helena; four brothers-in-law, Virgil (Bernice) Coates Jr., and Johnny (Phyllis) Coates of McRae, Ivy Joe (Hattie) Coates Sr. and Jerry Coates Sr. of Helena; four sisters-in-law, Eva Coates, Rose (Kreigor) Roby, Letha (Victor) Nails, all of Helena and Betty Wilcox of Tampa, Fla.; two Goddaughters, Monica Davis and Tara Peters of Easton, Pa., and one Godson, James Jones, also of Easton; two step-daughters, Maggie Jones and Charles Jewel Clay of Helena; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

John W. (Tap) Merritt Sr.
Services for John W. (Tap) Merritt Sr. of McRae were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at Central Gym in McRae with interment in Frances Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in McRae.
The Rev. T.H. Braswell Sr. officiated.
Merritt, 73, died Monday, April 24, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of the late Leroy and Margaret Merritt and was married to Ella Mae Clark Merritt. He was preceded in death by four brothers, one sister, and a devoted step-mother.
Born in McRae, he joined the Rockwell Methodist Church where he served as Chairman Steward until his death. He was formerly employed by Brown’s Chevron in McRae.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, John W. Merritt Jr. and Willie James Merritt of McRae, Robert (Dr. Janice) Merritt and Dr. Frank L. (Rose) Merritt of Rome, Ray Merritt of McRae and Brenda (Tyrone) Gillis of Glenwood; grandson, Anthony (Veronica) Wooten of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; brothers, Junious Bennett and Lewis (Elvera) Southerland of McRae and Earnest Southerland of New York.; sisters, Vera Jefferson of Cleveland, Ohio; Helen Anderson of Chicago, Ill., and Earnestine Merritt of Savannah; grandchildren, Amontillado, Chaka, Chandra, Donnell, Elizabeth, Tyrone Jr., Jahari and Daniel; seven great-grandchildren; aunts, Sally Smith, Naoma Smith and Mattie Bennett; 12 sisters-in-law; eight brothers-in-law; a devoted sister and brother-in-law, Julia (Levie) Wilcox Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Cinella Mae Durr Wilcox
Services for Cinella Mae Durr Wilcox of Jacksonville were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 29 at Rockhill CME Church in Jacksonville with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Ida Freeman and the Rev. Robert Hayward officiated.
Wilcox, 95, died Friday, April 21, 2006 at McRae Manor Nursing Home in McRae. She was the daughter of the late Sheddric Wax Durr and the late Ida Mae McRae Durr and was married to Ossie Lee Wilcox. She was preceded in death by two sons, Cuba Wilcox and Milton Wilcox.
Born in Telfair County, she accepted Christ at an early age, and was a member of Temple Chapel Church in Jacksonville her whole life. She was a secretary at Temple Chapel CME for 62 years and a member of the Christian Pilgrim. She also taught school and was a musician at Mt. Dollaway AME, New Hope Church, Rock Hill CME, Temple Chapel CME, and Millcreek Church. She was inspired, along with Sister Mary Jane Graham to organize the Ocmulgee Community Choir in 1933.
Survivors include her sister, Ida Anderson of Miami, Fla.; children, Mary Ruth Wilcox McRae of Jacksonville, Sadie Wilcox (William) Boatwright, and Quiney Lee Wilcox of Rayford, N.C.; aunt/mother, Ollie Mae Stewart of Milan; 26 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren and 73 great-great-grandchildren; niece, Velma Bell and nephew, Eccie Dobson, both of Miami, Fla.; special cousin, Otis Moore of Milan; special family friend, Edith Boney of Jacksonville; and a host of cousins and friends.

Charles Edward Brown Sr.
Services for Charles Edward Brown Sr. of McRae were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the McRae Church of God with interment in the Siloam Baptist Church cemetery.
Brown, 71, died Thursday, April 20, 2006. He was the son of the late Eugene and Effie Selph Brown. He was married to Esther Best Brown of McRae.
A native of Telfair County, where he lived most of his life, he was a member of the McRae Church of God, an electrician and farmer, and had served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Helen (Jack) Mosley of Hazlehurst, and Theresa (Tony) Elton of McRae; sons, Charles (Rhonda) Brown of McRae, Allen (Cathy) Brown of Milan, and Keith (Karen) Brown of McRae; brothers and sister, Dorsey Brown of McRae, Gracie Spires and J.D. Brown, both of Macon, and Roy Brown of Helena; grandchildren, Chad Brown, Marc Mosely, Heath Brown, Richard Brown, Lauren Brown, Katie Brown, Kristen Brown and Ryan Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates contributions to McRae Church of God, 403 Willow Creek Lane, McRae, Ga. 31055.

Mary Graham Pace
Services for Mary Graham Pace of Jacksonville were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville with interment in Graham Cemetery.
Rev. Steve King officiated.
Pace, 83, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 in the McRae Manor Nursing Home of McRae, where she had been a resident for several years. She was the daughter of the late William and Caroline Graham and was the widow of Alton Pace Sr.
Born in Jacksonville on October 22, 1910, she attended public school at the Mt. Dolloway Church School in Jacksonville. She was brought up in a home of a large family and was taught cleanliness, self-discipline and integrity. She was a woman of character; a Proverbial woman.
She joined the Salem Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully as an usher for many years. She was a member of Springhill Christian Pilgrim Lodge #1 of Jacksonville.
Survivors include children, Solomon (Celonia) Pace of Jacksonville, Sylvia (Arthur) Lamothe of Jamaica Queen, N.Y., Clifford (Myra) Pace, Frank (Barbara) Pace, and Betty Pace, all of Atlanta; one granddaughter that she reared, Pamela (Henry) Robinson of Richmond, Va.; nephew, Robert Pace of Jacksonville; sisters-in-law, Cornelia Graham of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Jane Graham of Jacksonville, Ga.; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jane Rogers Steverson
Graveside services for Jane Rogers Steverson of McRae were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22 at Blockhouse Baptist Church cemetery.
Steverson, 80, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Clement and Millie Burch Rogers, and was the widow of Amos Steverson.
She was a homemaker and a member of McRae First Baptist Church.
She is survived by daughter, Dr. Millie S. Perry of Vidalia; son, Dr. Leonard A. Steverson of Douglas; sister, Lillian Clements of McRae; grandchildren, Jesse H. Perry, Creed C. Perry, Elizabeth N. McArthur, and Misty D. Steverson; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Perry, Haley Perry, Ashton Steverson, Colin McArthur, and Trent Harper.
