Alney Venice McPherson Sr.

Alney Venice McPherson Sr., 88, most recently of Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park, FL, died Thursday evening, August 18, 2005 in Tallahassee, FL, following a brief hospitalization.
A son of the late Mary S. McPherson and Reginald Alexander McPherson, he was born in Greensboro, FL June 7, 1917. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Hines McPherson; his son, Alney Venice McPherson Jr. and a brother, O.V. McPherson.
He was a member of the Lanark Community Church in Lanark Village, FL. He and his wife had lived in Lanark Village until a few weeks ago. He was a 1935 graduate of Greensboro High School and was a contractor. He had been an active member of the Kiwanis and Lions Clubs before his retirement and after his retirement had been a builder with the Florida and Georgia Volunteer Baptist Builders. His passing takes with him a world of knowledge. He knew how to build a house from conception to finish and from foundation to roof by himself. He built his last house after his 80th birthday.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Martha R. McPherson; two daughters, Deanne McPherson Adams and her husband, Art Adams, Tallahassee and Martha McPherson Gherardi and her husband, Luciano Gherardi, St. George Island; a sister, Beulah Virginia McPherson Chandler; a brother, Reginald McPherson; five grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 26, from the Lanark Community Church, Spring Street, Lanark Village, FL.
Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to the Lighthouse Children’s Home, 7771 Mahan Dr., Tallahassee, FL 32309 or to Lanark Community Church, P.O. Box 424, Lanark Village, FL, 32323.

Sgt. Jerry Lewis ‘Lewie’ Ganey Jr.

Sgt. Jerry Lewis “Lewie” Ganey Jr., 29, of Folkston, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2005, from injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq.
He was born in Waycross and graduated from Charlton County High School in 1994. He served in the United States Marine Corps and then joined the Army National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Ganey; a daughter, Vanessa Ganey; a son, Jay Michael Ganey; his father, Jerry Lewis Ganey Sr.; mother, Beth Jones Sandusky; grandparents, Thelma Ganey and Larry and Beulah Jones Strickland; father and mother-in-law, Grady and Sue Walsh and mother-in-law, Judy Hawkins Walsh.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 14 from Camp Pinckney Baptist Church in Charlton County with the Rev. Rob Coram and Chaplain Don McDaniel officiating.
Burial followed in the Little Phebe Church Cemetery.
Shepard Funeral Home of Folkston was in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Smith

Wayne Smith, 55, of Callahan, FL died suddenly Monday morning, August 8, 2005 at his residence.
A native of Bell, FL, he had lived most of his life in Callahan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Smith and Jeanette Harper Smith.
He was a longtime supervisor with the Hart-Hanks Post Office in Jacksonville, FL. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the American Legion in Jacksonville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his two daughters, Christina Moore (husband Ronnie), Callahan, and Katrina Cone (husband Joe), Offerman; three grandchildren Amanda Smith, Callahan, and Kaylan and Kimberly Cone, both of Offerman; a brother, Floyd Harper (wife Annette), Mandarin, FL; two sisters, Margie Rosetta (husband Bob), Mandarin, FL, and Kasey Miller-Brown (husband Magill), Palatka, FL; his former wife and mother of his daughters, Cheryl Lyman, Offerman, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 11, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Memorialization will be by cremation.

Johnny Ray Combs

Johnny Ray Combs, 76, of Blackshear died early Friday morning, August 12, 2005, at the Pierce County Nursing Home after a brief illness.
He was a native and had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Combs and Maggie Steedley Combs; a daughter, Charmaine Combs and nine brothers and sisters.
He was a retired Major Sgt. First Class from the U.S. Army. After his retirement he went to work for the U. S. Postal Service in Blackshear as a custodian and worked there until retiring for the second time. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Clara Combs, Blackshear, a daughter, Sandra Meadows (husband Greg), Miramar Beach, FL.; three grandchildren, Lilly Meadows, Jon Harding Meadows, and Isabelle Meadows, all of Miramar Beach, FL, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 14, at St. John’s United Methodist Church.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lawana Louise Kent Hill Peacock

Lawana Louise Kent Hill Peacock, 66, of Blackshear, passed away late Friday evening, August 12, 2005, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home following a long illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she had been employed by Wal-Mart until ill health forced her to retire. She was a member of the Blackshear Church of God and enjoyed bowling and working in her yard. She was a daughter of the late Mallie and Lucille Pearson Kent and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Erven Eugene Hill, who passed away in 1988, and her mother-in-law, Victoria Mae Stone, who passed away in 2004.
Survivors are her husband, Paul Peacock, Blackshear; two daughters, Donna Hill, Manor and Pamela Hill Slaughter, Brunswick; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike Hill, Los Banos, CA and Gary and Joy Hill, Augusta, GA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Gordon Henderson, Blackshear and Linda and Jack Burnham, Augusta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Horrell and Diane Kent, Del Ray Beach, FL, Robert and Betty Kent, Melbourne, FL and Don and Nancy Kent, Miami, FL; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Hill, Blake Hill, Dana Gallager, Crystal Hill, Anna Hill, Shannon Minchew, Ashley Minchew, Joe Booth, Rebecca Booth, Justin King, Lauren King and Megan Slaughter; three great-grandchildren, Ian Tucker, Hannah Hill and David Gallager and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 15, from the Blackshear Church of God with the Rev. Clinton Kearney and the Rev. Wayne Hughes officiating.

William Ira Youmans

William Ira Youmans, 68, of Blackshear died suddenly Saturday afternoon, August 13, 2005, at his residence.
He was a native and life-long resident of Pierce County except for living 14 years in St. Marys. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lynn Smith Youmans; his parents, Ira Levi Youmans and Macie Peacock Youmans; three sisters, Clara Youmans, Thelma Walker, and Myrtice Copeland and two brothers, Leroy Youmans and Mack Youmans.
He was a retired supervisor from Gilman Paper Co. in Blackshear. He was a long-time member of Hacklebarney Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherri Lyn Aldridge (husband, the Rev. Randy Aldridge), Abingdon, VA; a son, William Roger Youmans, Blackshear; two grandchildren, Shane Aldridge (wife Kelley) Pennington Gap, VA and Holly Dean (husband Adam), Jonesville, VA; a great-grandchild Latchlon Dean Aldridge, Pennington Gap, VA; a sister Louise Short, Greenville, TX; a brother-in-law, Gene and Sherry Smith, Blackshear; a special friend, Bucky Youmans “his dog” and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, from the Hacklebarney Baptist Church.

Kenneth Paul ‘Kenny’ Wishall

Kenneth Paul “Kenny” Wishall, 40, of Waycross, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2005, at his residence following a sudden illness.
A native of Tuscola, IL, he had lived most of his life in Ware County. He was an electrician by trade and had previously worked for All Safe Fire Protection and Clayton Homes.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Hall Wishall, Waycross; three sons, Kris Wishall and Justin Peacock, both of Waycross and Storm Peacock, Patterson; his mother and step-father, Aline (Carter) and Dave Neiman, Starke, FL; his father and step-mother, Bob and Yvonne Godwin Wishall, Waycross; a sister, Sandy Solomon, Waycross; a brother, Kevin Wishall, Waycross; one niece, Ivy Kay Wishall and four nephews, Andy Beecher, Scott Beecher and Jason Solomon, all of Waycross and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 1, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.
iIntermentfollowed in the Greenlawn cemetery in Ware County.
Active pallbearers were Kevin Wishall, R.L. Godwin, Andy Beecher, Hardy Solomon, Ken Mullis and Randy Moody.

Rosalie Rowell Manning

Rosalie Rowell Manning, 83, of Blackshear, passed away early Friday afternoon, August 5, 2005, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center.
A native of Brantley County, she had lived in Pierce County for most of her life. She had worked for the Pierce County Board of Education in the lunchroom at the old Patterson School. She was a member of the Walkerville Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late Baxter and Ada Harrison Rowell. Also preceding her in death were her husband, D. C. Manning; a daughter, Polly Ledford; a son, Anthony Manning and her two brothers, Allen Rowell and Ed Rowell.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Jimmy Jones, Waycross; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Nancy Manning, Manor and Joey and Mary Manning, Blackshear; eight grandchildren, Allison Johnson, Renee Smoak, Randy Manning, Herrin Manning, Melissa Manning, Nicholas Manning, Ryan Manning and Ken Jones; seven great-grandchildren; her loving miniature poodle, Toxie, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 7, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Willie Jo Bridges Strom

Willie Jo Bridges Strom, 73, of Blackshear, died Friday, July 29, 2005 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross following an extended illness.
A native of Polk County, she had lived most of her life in Pierce County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Julius Bridges and Minnie Lou Brazier Bridges. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Elisha Strom, Blackshear; two daughters, Nell S. Murray (husband Tim), Clayton, NC, Ronda Brinson (husband Mike), Brunswick; four grandchildren, Blake Murray and Samantha Ann Murray, both of Clayton, NC and Mikey Brinson and Mikala Brinson, both of Brunswick; two sisters, Rebecca Peoples, Blackshear and Pauline Robbins, Marietta; a brother, Issac Bridges (wife Mary Lou), McRae, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
