Katherine Acosta Sciple Peterson
Katherine Acosta Sciple Peterson, 75, of Orlando, FL, passed away Friday, July 22, 2005 in Orlando.
Ms. Peterson was born in Atlanta, in 1929 where she spent her childhood. She lived in New York City and New Jersey but spent the majority of her adult life in Central Florida. Much of her working life was spent in the field of education. She received a BFA in Fine Arts and an MA in English Literature, both from the University of Georgia. She was a dedicated rescuer of unwanted and injured animals. She extensively researched the genealogy of the Nicholls, Acosta and Sciple families, and related family lines.
She will be greatly missed by her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Peterson Quillman, Winter Park, FL and Isabelle Holcomb, Eustis, FL; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 28, from the Blackshear Cemetery.
She was laid to rest next to her mother, Meta Nicholls Sciple. Her grandfather, John Calhoun Nicholls, is also buried in the Nicholls family lot and it was he who gave the land for the cemetery to the City of Blackshear.

Rubert J. ‘Do Big’ Dubberly
Rubert J. “Do Big” Dubberly, 76, of 210 Poor Man Road, Bristol, died Friday, July 29, 2005, at his residence after a sudden illness.
A native of Wayne County, he had lived there most of his life. He was a son of the late Caleb Jasper Dubberly and Mary Eason Dubberly Cofer. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Thomas W. Cofer and by his sister and brother-in-law, Beulah and Monroe Wasdin.
He was a farmer and a member of the Lake Chapel Primitive Baptist Church near Patterson.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Hubert and Irene Dubberly, Bristol and Jacksonville, FL; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 4, from the Lake Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Appling County with the Rev. Edwin Strickland officiating.
iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will take place from 6-9 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, August 3) at the funeral home.

James Davenport Riggins Sr.
James Davenport Riggins Sr., 77, of Blackshear passed away Friday, July 22, 2005, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Chatham County, he had lived in Pierce County for most of his life. He retired from the Peoples Bank after 46 years of service and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and had been a member of the Blackshear Lions Club for the last 54 years. He was a son of the late Charles Oscar and Dorothy Porter Riggins.
Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Jackie Howard Riggins, Blackshear; a daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Richard Greene, Blackshear; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Michelle Riggins, Blackshear; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Sonny Lynn, Louiseville, KY; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Porter and Dorothy Riggins, Savannah; five grandchildren, Sandy Scurry, Darby Greene, Rick Greene and Cadi Riggins, all of Blackshear and Gina Burnett, Atlanta; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Peggy Strickland McAfee
Peggy Strickland McAfee, 83, of Hortense, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at the Bayview Nursing Home in Nahunta.
A native and life-long resident of Brantley County, she was a former Hortense Elementary School teacher but had also worked as a cashier with the Okefenoke Co-Op for over twenty years. She was a member of the Twin Rivers Baptist Church and the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class. She was much loved by her nieces and nephews who gave her the title of “best cook in Brantley County”. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Bence and Agnes Harvey Strickland and was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Thomas McAfee III.
Survivors are a sister, Mada Strickland Waller, Soperton; three nieces and their spouses, Sybil and Elkin Strickland, Hortense, Jill and David Dyer, Gainesville and Deidre and Steve Howard, Gadsen, AL; six nephews and their spouses, Joey and Selena Strickland and Gary and Joyce Strickland, all of Hortense, Al and Jan Strickland, Atlanta, Jimmy and Mary Waller, Soperton, David and Connie Waller, Covington and Jerry and Diane Strickland, Waycross and several great nieces, great nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 14, from the Twin Rivers Baptist Church.

The Rev. Wyatt Mitchell Price
The Rev. Wyatt Mitchell Price, 90, of Patterson, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home.
A native of Carroll County, he was a graduate of the Atlanta Bible Institute and was a retired Baptist minister. During his pastoral career, the Rev. Price served many churches some of which included the Constitution Baptist Church in Atlanta, Enon Baptist Church in College Park, Zion Hill Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Hartsfield Baptist Church in Hartsfield, Cove Baptist Church in Pine Mountain and the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Jonesboro. He was a member of the Patterson Baptist Church where he was in the Men’s Bible Class. The Rev. Price was a son of the late Charles Arthur and Amanda Dumar McWhorter Price and was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Inez Lamb Price, who passed away in 2003; a sister, Mary Louise Cooper, and three brothers, Merlin Price, Minford Price and Glen Price.
Survivors are three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Jerry and Sue Price, Patterson, Marcus and Joan Price, Jacksonville, FL and Charles and Linda Price, Beaufort, SC; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and Ed Barrett, Carrollton and June and Bill Morgan, Douglasville; a brother and sister-in-law, Winford and Jo Price, Powder Springs; five grandchildren, Michelle Crosby, Andy Price, Jason Price, Joel Price and Melissa Vincent; four great-grandchildren, C. J. Crosby, Seth Crosby, Mikie Price and Taylor Vincent and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dr. Willoughby Lamar Minchew
Dr. Willoughby Lamar Minchew, 82, died early Sunday morning, July 17, 2005 at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jesup after an extended illness.
A native of Ware County, he had lived in Wayne County since 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Richard Minchew and Susie Cason Minchew; his step-mother Mary Carter Minchew; three brothers, Astor Minchew, John Minchew and Clifford Minchew.
Dr. Minchew was a retired optometrist, having practiced in Wayne County since 1945.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Jesup. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.
Survivors include his daughter Sharon A. Mitchell (husband James), Jesup; a son, Shawn Minchew, Jesup; two grandchildren, James Justin Mitchell and Mary Ann Mitchell, both of Jesup; a sister, Vida Mae Smith, Sanford; three brothers, Mike Minchew (wife Gerri), Delman Minchew (wife Katy), all of Waycross, and Malcom Minchew (wife Jo), Jacksonville, FL and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 18, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Memorialization was by Cremation.

Nicholas Lavon ‘Nick’ Cason
Nicholas Lavon “Nick” Cason, 25, of Blackshear, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 5, 2005, at his residence following a long illness.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, he was a carpenter and was a member of the Offerman Church of God. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Faye Cason, and also by an uncle, Neal Cason.
Survivors are his mother, Jennifer Cason, Blackshear; a daughter, Kristen Cason, Blackshear; a sister, Nicole (Rocky) Smith, Waycross; a brother, Hunter Cason, Blackshear; his grandfather, Simon Lavon “Peanut” Cason of Patterson; three aunts, Brenda (Ellis) Denison and Grace (Buddy) Gill, all of Offerman and Nola Moody, Hortense; an uncle, Jeffrey Cason, Patterson; a niece, Brittney Smith, Waycross; two cousins, Drew Denison, Offerman and Casey Cason, Atlanta and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, from the Offerman Church of God.

Mary Louise Durrence O’Berry
Macy Louise Durrence O’Berry, 74, of Blackshear, passed away Friday afternoon, July 8, 2005, at her residence.
A native of Appling County, she had lived in Pierce County for most of her life. A housewife, she also enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with her family. She attended the Offerman Church of God and was a daughter of the late Levin and Macy Chancey Durrence.
Survivors are her husband, Henry Wade “Jack” O’Berry, Blackshear; two daughters and sons-in-law, Loudean and David Hodge, Hortense and Melissa Louise and Jade Chancey, Blackshear; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Henry Lee O’Berry and Michael and Glenda O’Berry, all of Blackshear, Cecil and Jo Anne O’Berry, Pine Top, AZ and James and Patricia O’Berry, Offerman; three sisters, Laverne O’Berry, Offerman and Nancey Batten and Shirley Durrence, both of Nicholls; two brothers, Buddy Durrence and Junior Durrence, both of Nicholls; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 10, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Madylon Nancy Smith Dickson
Madylon Nancy Smith Dickson, 73, of Bristol, passed away late Thursday night, July 7, 2005, at the Island Hospice Center in Beaufort, SC.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Florida for a number of years before returning to Pierce County several years ago. She was a beautician and a loving wife. A Baptist by faith, she was also a daughter of the late Algernon Beal and Nancy Ethel Boyette Smith and was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allen Dickson.
Survivors are a sister, JoAnn Smith Dickson, Beaufort, SC; six brothers, Edsel Beal Smith, Cleveland, TN, Jerdon Beal (Julie) Smith and Glenn Isaac Smith, all of California, Arlen Dorsey (Linda) Smith and Phillip Eldridge (Betty) Smith, all of Bristol and James Calvert (Sue) Smith, Palm Beach, FL and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10, from the Ritch Baptist Church in Wayne County near Screven.
