Nichols Lawton ‘Ray’ Riggins Jr.
Nichols Lawton “Ray” Riggins Jr., 65, of Blackshear, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2005, at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL, following a short illness.
A native of Pierce County, he was retired from BellSouth where he had worked as an outside technician. He was a member of the Hacklebarney Baptist Church were he taught the Middle Adult Sunday School Class and also served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was a son of the late Nichols Lawton and Ocie Dixon Riggins. He was also preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Roxie M. Riggins, Blackshear; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Raymond Walsh and Cindy and Kevin Royster, all of Blackshear; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dottie and Milton Harper and Ferrell and Charles Bryant, all of Blackshear; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Rastus Riggins and Edwin and Jean Riggins, all of Blackshear; four grandchildren, Cole Walsh, Kandace Royster, Kimberly Royster and Kyle Royster and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, from the Hacklebarney Baptist Church.

Richard Michael Johnson
Richard Michael Johnson, 53, of Macon, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2005, at his residence following a short illness.
A native of Savannah, he was a carpenter and had served in the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Moody Johnson.
Survivors include his companion, Eloise Brown, Macon; a daughter, Tara Beach, Fairfax, SC; a son, Richard Michael Johnson Jr., Barnwell, SC; his father, James Clarence Johnson, Estill, SC; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathrine and Michael Hair, Brunswick and Joyce Ann and Michael Gunnels, Barnwell; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Jimmy and Ruby Johnson, Grey, GA and Jerry Johnson and Steve Johnson, both of Estill; two grandchildren, LeAnna Gunnels and Clint Gunnels and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 13), from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Addie Katrina ‘Trina’ Fulmore
Addie Katrina “Trina” Fulmore, 69, of Atlanta, and a native of Blackshear, died late Monday evening, June 27, 2005, at A.G. Rhodes Skilled Nursing Facility in Atlanta.
She was born in Blackshear April 9, 1936 as the daughter of the late Justine Lassiter and David Fulmore. She accepted Christ early in her life and joined Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Becton.
After graduating from Lee Street High School in Blackshear, Addie left Blackshear and continued her life in Miami, FL where she remained until retiring to Atlanta in 1997. While living in Atlanta, she united with St. Mathews Free Will Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.B. Woodley and served on the Usher Board. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Miami. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Miami.
Survivors include four daughters, Justine (Leonard) Daniels, Verletta (George) Washington, Kim (Charlie) Bell and Connie (Monroe) Wallace; four brothers, Luther McCray, David Fulmore, Joseph Lassiter and Marvin Lassiter; one sister, Mildred Lassiter; one uncle, John Lee Surrency; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, from the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

Robert Alton ‘Little Bud’ Wilson
Robert Alton “Little Bud” Wilson, 42, of Brookfield, IL, passed away late Wednesday evening, June 29, 2005, at his residence following a sudden illness.
A native of Ware County, he had lived in Pierce County and Ocala, FL for several years before moving to Brookfield a month ago. He was a welder and had served in the U.S. Army and also the U.S. Marines. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Lee Wilson, who passed away in 2001.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Betty Ard and Clifton Crews, Waycross; a daughter, Ashley Marie Wilson, Ocala, FL; a son, Derrick Blake Hipps, Waycross; a sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Richard Hinkle, Waycross; two brothers, Ronnie Wilson, Blackshear and Tyler Crews, Valdosta and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

John Edward Strickland
John E. Strickland, 71, of Blackshear, died Saturday evening, July 2, 2005 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Pierce County and was a member of the Church of God of Blackshear where he was a deacon and a lay minister. He had served in the U.S. Navy and was retired as a boilermaker with Local 26. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Polly Walker Strickland and by two brothers I.J. Strickland and Floyd Strickland.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Mary Nell Strickland; three daughters, Rhonda Strickland, Ramona Cisneros (husband Larry), and Jodie Emmons (husband David); five grandchildren, Chad Boyd, Erica Cisneros Hayes (husband Lee), Bubba Cisneros, Austin Perritt and Khristian Emmons; one great-granddaughter, Kilee Hayes; a brother: Billy Strickland (wife Mildred); four sisters, Thelma Kirkland (husband Junior), Juanita Head, Genitha Chaney (husband T.L.), and Karen Patterson (husband Billy); two brothers-in-law, R.L. Strickland (wife Naomi) and Jack Strickland (wife Molly); one sister-in-law, Maxine Whitt (husband Bob) all of Blackshear, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Eugene Ray Thorne Sr.
Eugene Ray Thorne Sr., 78, of Offerman, died Tuesday evening, June 21, 2005 at Jesup Healthcare after an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Mangham Thorne; his parents, G.C. Thorne and Vera Russ Thorne and four brothers, Marion S. Thorne, Grover C. Thorne Jr., Roy C. Thorne and Jack H. Thorne.
Mr. Thorne retired in 1989 as a Boilermaker, having worked with the Boilermakers Union of Chattanooga, TN and Pipe Fitters Union Local 498 of Gadsden, AL. He was also a Mason and veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include a son, Eugene Ray Thorne II, Offerman; a step-son, Ben Childress, Nashville, TN; four grandchildren, Eugene Ray Thorne III, Offerman, Rayena Thorne, Hanceville, AL, Allen Childress, Lubbock, TX, and Zachary Childress, Nashville, TN; a brother, Ronald Thorne (wife Shirley), Warner Robins; four sisters, Ann Bennett (husband Travis), Offerman, Sue Williamson (husband Laverne), Patterson, Dorothy Bennett (husband Woodrow), Offerman, and Virginia Chancey, Allendale, SC, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Frances Westberry Waters
Frances Westberry Waters, 89, of Blackshear, passed away early Sunday morning, June 26, 2005, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she had been a housewife and was a member of the Blackshear First Baptist Church where she was in the Followers Sunday School Class. She was a daughter of the late Archie Olen and Janie M. Jacobs Westberry and was also preceded in death by her husband, William Vernon Waters Sr.; a son, James Kenneth Waters; three sisters, Eunice Sauls, Ruby Sauls and Aline Tuten and four brothers, Alfred Westberry, Bruce Westberry, Tracey Westberry and Lonnie Westberry.
Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jacquline and Ralph Dixon and Diane and Andy Anderson all of Hinesville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, William Vernon Jr. and Shirley Waters, Jacksonville, NC, Stanley Waters, Waycross and Larry Waters of Hinesville; a special daughter-in-law, Carolyn Waters, Blackshear; a sister, Edna Justice, Waycross, a brother, Howard Westberry, Jesup; eight grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, June 29) from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Elvera Dowling Lee
Elvera Dowling Lee, 91, of Hoboken, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2005, at her residence following a long illness.
A native and life-long resident of Brantley County, she was a homemaker and had also worked with her late husband, Silas D. Lee, on the family farm. She was a member of Mars Hill Primitive Baptist Church and enjoyed Sacred Harp Music. Mr. and Mrs. Lee had also been Deacon and Deaconess of High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church. In the late 1930s she won a contest sponsored by REA in which she came up with their slogan, REA-DY-SERV-US. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, Martin Edgar and Nancy Dryden Dowling; a son, David W. Lee; four sisters, Lelila Walker, Onnie Strickland, Effie Walker and Estell Linton and all five of her brothers, Tollie Dowling, Homer Dowling, Elder Elton Dowling, Morris Dowling and Ira Dowling.
Survivors include four daughters, Janice (Gene) Dominy, Macon, Mary N. (Art) Christy, Blackshear and Carolyn (Jimmy) Carter and Sandra (Willis) Lee, all of Hoboken; five sons, Elder Tollie D. (Ramona) Lee, Callahan, FL Sammie (Nancy) Lee, Griffin, Ronnie Dale (Adrian) Lee and Marty Lee, all of Waycross and Maxie (Bessie) Lee, Fitzgerald; a daughter-in-law, Rudell Lee, Hoboken; a sister, Alene Hicks, Waycross; 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; her caregiver, Marsha Lee, Hoboken and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 28, from the Mars Hill Primitive Baptist Church near Hoboken with her son, Elder Tollie Lee, officiating.

Master Jerry Donavin Brooker
Master Jerry Donavin Brooker, infant son of Helen J. Combee and Jerry A. Brooker Jr. of Blackshear died Tuesday night, March 22, 2005, at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
Survivors include his parents, Helen Combee and Jerry A. Brooker Jr., both of Blackshear; a brother, Devlin Combee, Blackshear; grandparents, Jerry and Dorothy Brooker, Blackshear and several aunts, uncles, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, from the Blackshear City cemetery with the Rev. Mike Stone officiating.

Harvey Mackey Jr.
Harvey Mackey Jr., 62, of 1237 South 17th Street, Louisville, KY., died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at this residence.
Harvey was born June 30, 1942 in Screven, the son of the late Harvey Mackey Sr. and Pinkie Whitfield Mackey. He was educated in the public schools of Blackshear and Pierce County, including Lee Street High School.
He left Blackshear as a young man, seeking his fame and fortune and moved to Louisville, KY, where he was employed as a chef with a large restaurant until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Hill Mackey.
Survivors include his brother, Theodore (Pearline) Mackey, Blackshear; three sisters, Pearlie L. (Willie B.) Taylor, Annie (Marion) James and Jacquelyn Blakely, all of Blackshear and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorialization was by cremation.
Graveside interment services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25 in Shiloh Cemetery.
