James E. Ganus, 89, of Andalusia, AL, died Monday, Feb. 14 in the Opp Hospital in Opp, AL.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Ganus, Andalusia; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Don and Barbara K. Ganus, Blackshear; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Joe Whitehurst, Andalusia and Cheryl and Ken Still, Dothan, AL; five sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn Bundrick, Opp, Margie Ganus, Andalusia, Elmira Ridgeway, Grand Bay, AL, Polly and Paul Bradle, TX and Betty Harrelson, Andalusia; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, from the East Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Ganus and the Rev. Ralph Jones officiating.
Special music was performed by Marlin Dickens.

Johnnie Mae Jenkins Nails
Johnnie Mae Jenkins Nails, 64, of 1101 Elizabeth Street, Waycross, died early Friday morning, February 4, 2005, at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
She was born on February 10, 1940 in Pembroke, as the oldest daughter of Frank and Lorene Jenkins. She was educated in the Pierce County School System, graduating from Lee Street High School in Blackshear in 1959.
She united herself with the Lord at an early age and became a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Patterson, where she attended faithfully until her health no longer permitted.
She was employed with Swisher International, Inc., formerly of Waycross, and commuted to work in Jacksonville, FL for many years, and was nearing retirement this year.
Survivors include her husband, James Lee Nails; a devoted and loving son, Gary L. Nails; her youngest brother, Carlton Jenkins, who was very special to her; loving parents, Frank and Lorene Jenkins; six sisters, Cora Bailey, Frankie (Louis) Antoine, Anne Jenkins, Janice Jenkins, Constance (Wilbert) Muhammad and Frances Jenkins; four additional brothers, Larry Jenkins, Floyd Jenkins, Garrison Jenkins and Leonard Jenkins; a special cousin, Bernice Daniels Murdock; loving Nails in-laws and siblings; a special god-daughter, Valerie Douglas, an adopted brother, Joseph Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, from the St. James Missionary Baptist Church (The Ridge) near Patterson, with Pastor Thomas Smith, Jr. officiating.

Ruby Turner Kersey
Ruby Turner Kersey of Blackshear, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
A native of Wayne County, she had lived in Pierce County most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Willard Kersey.
Survivors include a daughter, Josephine Williamson, Odum; a son, John R. Kersey, Blackshear; a sister, Inez Black, Rockville, CT; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, from the Ritch Baptist Church cemetery in Wayne County with the Rev. R.C. Mathis officiating.
Active pallbearers were Hershel Dixon, Franklin Dixon, Mario Gonzalez, Jeffery Hamby, Tommy Williamson, Buck Shot Williamson, Timmy Sapp and Kenny Sapp.

Billy Monroe Youmans
Billy Monroe Youmans, 57, of Blackshear died early Wednesday morning, February 9, 2005, at the South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta after an extended illness.
A native of Blackshear, he had lived here most of his life except for the last few years when he had lived in Augusta and Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Odis Youmans and Alease Brooker Youmans; four sisters, Hazel Hendrix, Beryl Dixon, Maude Lee Gaines and Lillian Walker and four brothers, Robert Youmans, Med Youmans, Sherron Youmans, and Odis Youmans Jr.
Mr. Youmans was a City of Blackshear employee for 18 years, working in the maintenance department, where he served as assistant superintendent. He was a member of Youmans Chapel Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Seabees. He also had the honor of guarding President Richard Nixon during his military career.
Survivors include two sisters, Carolyn Walker (husband Lewis), Patterson, and Mary Macias, Brunswick; three brothers, David Youmans (wife Dixie), Richard Youmans (wife Tonya) and Jon Youmans, all of Blackshear; his former wife, Carolyn Geiger Youmans, Brunswick; a special nephew, Shaun Youmans, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Graveside funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, from the Waters Cemetery.

William Glenn O’Brien
William Glenn O’Brien, 77, of Blackshear passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his home in Blackshear after an extended illness.
Born in Stovall, Granville County, NC, he was a son of the late Rufus Carroll and Daisy Cutts O’Brien. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Cutts O’Brien, Dan A. O’Brien and Richard “Dickie” O’Brien.
He had lived in Blackshear for over 50 years. In his younger years, he worked on the tobacco markets in SC, NC and TN, and was a sales representative for 17 years with Southern Propane Gas Company of Blackshear. He was retired from the Transportation Department of CSX railroad. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blackshear.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ann Brooker O’Brien, Blackshear; a daughter, Glenna Ann Proctor, Blackshear; a son, W.G. “Bud” O’Brien Jr. (special daughter-in-law, Ada Lisa O’Brien), Blackshear; three grandchildren, April Ann O’Brien, Los Angeles, CA; James Vasco “Josh” Proctor III, Valdosta and Ashlee Ann Proctor, Asheville, NC; two sisters, Juanita Ingolfson, Oxford, NC, and Evelyn Wall, Stovall, NC; one brother, Carroll M. “Blu” (and Janie) O’Brien, Baltimore, MD; a brother-in-law, Robert H. “Bobby” Brooker, Waycross and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, from the chapel of Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home.

Ora Lee Baxter Barksdale Hill
Ora Lee Baxter Barksdale Hill, 92, of Birmingham, AL, passed away Monday, February 7, 2005, in Birmingham.
She was born January 10, 1913 on her parents’ farm in Blackshear. A woman of great beauty, she won the first beauty contest she ever entered. For many decades, her designer sewing skills kept her beautifully dressed.
She graduated from a Georgia business school when she was about 23. Her own early property investments along with a financial genius in the stock markets provided her with the means to generously support Berea College, a regional school dedicated to working scholarship students only.
About 1940 she married
Protective Life Vice President Charles Barksdale. He died in 1972. In 1974, she married
the newly retired James Ernest Hill. She shared her love of travel with each of them.
For decades, Mrs. Hill brought nieces and nephews to visit her in Birmingham. She supported Opera Birmingham, the Birmingham Music Club and Birmingham Southern College. She supported two Methodist Churches in Blackshear, Ward Memorial Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church, was a member of the Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, The Salvation Army, Birmingham Museum of Art and was a founding member of Ventures, an Investment Group.
She loved riding horseback in the early days of the Vestavia Hills Country Club. She was a proud member of Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, a life member of Opera Birmingham and over her lifetime she was generous to numerous other institutions and organizations.
For years various community groups used her quiet, pleasant personality as their Hospitality Chair. She will be missed by those who knew her well at Protective Life.
She will be mourned by her dear friends, Jane Hinds, Birmingham and Jean Dixon, Blackshear; her nephews and nieces, Sharon Pearson Dial and Blake Treadwell, both of Blackshear, Cynthia Oberschlake, Perry, FL and Marc Treadwell, Macon and nieces Nancy Baxtor Arrington, Joan Baxter Graham, Carol Baxter Dowling and Sheryl Baxter Thigpen, all of Blackshear; nephews Tony and David Baxter, Blackshear and Gordon Bennett, Pennsylvania; a grandniece, Kathleen Sisk and a grandnephew, Gordy Sisk, both of Atlanta.
A private entombment took place Saturday, Feb. 12 in Birmingham.

James Stephen Tuten Sr.
James Stephen Tuten Sr., 87, of Waycross died Sunday evening, February 13, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.
A native of Pierce County, he had lived most of his life in Waycross. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Mizner Tuten and Nettie Youmans Tuten; a brother, Bill Tuten and three sisters, Lera Coleman, Ruth Powers and Janie Strickland.
He was the retired owner of Waycross Battery and Electric. A longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he had served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, and the Big Brothers Sunday School Class. He was also on the Board of Trustees of the Salvation Army, Past Exalted Ruler of the Waycross Elks Club, member and past chairman of the Georgia Automotive Wholesalers Association, Shrine Club, Dover’s Bluff Hunting and Fishing Club and a member of the family of Jesus Christ.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ruby Bowen Tuten, Waycross; a daughter, Jeanene Zachry (husband Mike), Blackshear; a son Jimmy Tuten (wife Margaret), Blackshear; four grandchildren, Jenifer Raulerson (husband Lanier), Douglas, Stephen Tuten (wife Paula), Blackshear, Kim Zachry, Blackshear and Michael Zachry, Augusta; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, from the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Donald Hugh Kimbrell
Donald Hugh Kimbrell, 84, of Blackshear died Tuesday afternoon, February 1, 2005, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, FL, after an extended illness. Mr. Kimbrell had been living with his daughter in Chiefland, FL.
A native of Ocoee, FL, he had lived many years in Blackshear before moving to Chiefland in 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Kimbrell and Irene Dixon Kimbrell; a son, Donnie Hugh Kimbrell; a son-in-law, Lloyd Stauffer; a brother, Thomas Kimbrell and a sister, Catherine Middleton.
He was a retired carpenter working for many years in South Florida and in Blackshear. He was a member of several hunting and fishing clubs including the Pierce County Hunting Club, Old River Road Club, Sportsman Club, Cow Bone Hunting Club and Mershon Hunting Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.
Survivors include his two daughters, Barbara Ann Stauffer, Gainesville, FL, and Shirley Goins (husband Jim), Chiefland, FL; six grandchildren, Dawn Williams (husband Tony), Trenton, FL, Michele Stauffer, Durham, NC, Jennifer Stauffer, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, James, Brandon, and Matt Goins, all of Chiefland, FL; two great-granddaughters, Krysten and Amanda Johnson of Trenton, FL; two brothers Shirley Kimbrell (wife Marie), Waycross, and Theran Kimbrell (wife Florence), MacClenney, FL, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A private family graveside service was held Friday, Feb. 4, in Oakland Cemetery.

Flem Thornton
Flem Thornton, 72, of Blackshear died Thursday morning, February 3, 2005, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after an extended illness.
A native of Wayne County, he had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dalton Albert Thornton and Alice Jewell Thornton; a sister, Onie Thornton and a brother, Owen Thornton.
He was a member of Faith Mission in Blackshear. He was a retired pulpwooder and farmer.
Survivors include four sisters Unavee Courson, Blackshear, Vera Johnson (husband Ernest), Patterson, Jannie Johnson (husband Travis), Blackshear, and Winnie T. Youmans, Blackshear; two brothers Quinton Thornton and Jean Raulerson, Blackshear, and Winton Thornton (wife Wilma), Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, from the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Wayne County.
