Cornelius Barney ‘C.B.’ Rowell
Cornelius Barney “C.B.” Rowell, 75, of Hortense passed away Thursday evening, February 3, 2005, at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
A native of Brantley County, he had lived there all of his life. He was a retired boilermaker, and member of the Boilermaker Local 199. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Twin Rivers Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Barney William and Alga Stewart Rowell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Howard Rowell and by a brother, Glennie Rowell.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Jerry Collins and Pat and Randy Davison, both of Hortense; three sisters, Annie Ruth Perkins and Vonice Brooks, Hortense, and LaVonne Howard, Augusta; three grandchildren, Christopher Corbitt and Erin Davison, Hortense and Brandi Fowler, Blackshear; three great-grandchildren, Mikayla Fowler, Odum, and Austin and Micheal Lamb, Hortense and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Feb. 6, from the Twin Rivers Baptist Church.

Dorothy Crosby Crews
Dorothy Crosby Crews, 68, of Waynesville died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at the Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick Campus.
A longtime resident of Sanford, FL, she had made her home in Waynesville for the past year. She was a retired convenience store manager. She was a daughter of the late Courtland S. Crosby and Aileen Bowen Crosby. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas S. Crosby and a sister, Mary Crosby Smith.
Survivors include one son, James V. Crews of Stevensville, MT; three daughters, Teresa W. Lowry, Melrose, FL., Doris E. McAtee, Sanford, FL and Linda Karen Van Ord, Waynesville; three brothers, James H. Crosby, Darien, William Crosby, Danville, VA, and David Crosby, Blackshear; a sister, Martha Berrie, Blackshear; seven grandchildren; one aunt, Waunell Griffin, Waycross and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, from the New Home cemetery near Offerman with the Rev. Alvin Gill officiating.

Lester Googe
Lester Googe, 59, of Blackshear died Sunday morning, February 6, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.
A native of Appling County, he had lived many years in Brunswick before moving to Blackshear in 1986. He was preceded in death by his parents, Middleton Googe and Viola Brown Googe and by four brothers, Quinton Googe, E.A. Allen and Charles Googe, James Googe.
He was a retired mechanic from Owen’s Junkyard in Brunswick. He was a member of the Living River Church of God in Blackshear.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Googe, Blackshear; three daughters Michelle Sweat (husband Randy), Dawn Boatright, and Stacey Lee (husband Stanley), all of Blackshear; six grandchildren Dylan Boatright, Jordan Sweat, Jeffrey and Brigitte Lee, and Kaitlyn Sweat, all of Blackshear and Brittany Lee, Waycross; mother-in-law, Myrtle Durrance, Brunswick; two brothers, Herman Day (wife Lillie), Brunswick, Earnest Allen (wife Paulette), Blackshear; two sisters, Nathenia Beckham, Metter and Agnes Googe, Reidsville; two sisters-in-law Margie Googe, Blackshear and Martha Googe, Forest City, NC, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, from the Living River Church of God.

Sara Jones Osban
Sarah Leona Jones Osban, 93, of Blackshear died Saturday morning, February 5, 2005 at Baptist Village in Waycross after an extended illness.
A native of Jacksonville, FL, she had lived in many places in Florida before moving to Dalton for 14 years. She moved to Blackshear in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Robert Osban and her parents, Aaron Jones and Lorraina Bennett Jones.
She was a retired registered nurse with 50 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear and was a member of the Alathean Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughter, Adrienne Mauldin (husband Marshall), Dalton and a son Robert Osban (wife Linda), Blackshear; four grandchildren, Rob Osban (wife Deione), Hoboken, Jennifer Mattox (husband Gentry), Blackshear, Tucker and John Mauldin, Dalton; four great-grandchildren, Caleb Hiers and Madison Mattox, both of Blackshear, Staten Braddy and Sarah Osban, both of Hoboken, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Memorialization was by cremation.

Jasper Feldon Tyre
Jasper Feldon Tyre, 86, of Blackshear died Friday evening, January 28, 2005, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after an extended illness.
A native of Bacon County, he had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion C. Tyre and Retta Hyers Tyre and by a son, Hal Tyre.
He formerly owned and operated the Southland Oil Corp. Service Station in Blackshear for many years. After his retirement, he worked many years for Pierce County at the Pierce County Transfer Station.
He attended Damascus Primitive Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and was a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club in Blackshear.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eva Mae Bryant Tyre, Blackshear; a son, Glennis Tyre (wife Vicki) and a daughter Feldeen Walker, all of Blackshear; four grandchildren, Raymond Walker (wife Abby), Richmond Hill, Melissa Smith (husband Blake), Blackshear, Stacie Jorishie (husband Chris), Davidson, NC and Kristi Bennett (husband Dan) Blackshear; eight great-grandsons Caleb Walker, Blackshear, Stetson Smith, Blackshear, Chase Jorishie, Davidson, NC, Daniel Bennett, Blackshear, Spencer Smith, Blackshear, Payton Walker, Richmond Hill, Matthew and Luke Bennett, both of Blackshear; a brother Kennon Tyre, Mershon; two sisters, Laverne T. Boatright of Mershon, and Jean Clyatt of Augusta, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, from First Baptist Church.

Jerry Franklin Tanner
Jerry Franklin Tanner, 35, of Blackshear died Sunday evening, January 30, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.
A native of Bacon County, he had lived there most of his life before moving to Blackshear in 2001. He was preceded in death by his father, Vasco Carroll Tanner.
He was employed as a foreman for Sumter Utilities of Sumter, SC. He attended First Community Church in Alma and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Brooke Nipper, Alma; a son, Austin Jon Tanner, Savannah; his mother and step-father, Shirley and Andy Clough, Blackshear; his grandparents Russell and Louise Tanner, Alma; three brothers Jamie C. Tanner (wife Cindy), Alma, John A. Tanner (wife Roxanne), Blackshear, and Matthew A. Clough, Blackshear; a sister, Joni M. Tanner, Blackshear; three step-brothers Andrew L. Clough III, Savannah, Archie R. Clough (wife Mysti) and Chris H. Clough (wife Susan), all of Blackshear; a step-sister, Renee S. Choates (husband Jeremy), Dublin and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 2) from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear.
Graveside services will take place 2 p.m. this afternoon (Wednesday) at Pinelawn cemetery in Alma.

The Rev. John Temoshchuk
The Rev. John Temoshchuk, 76, of Yulee, FL, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at his home in Yulee.
He was a Baptist pastor for 42 years. He served churches in Florida, Southeast Georgia, and Augsburg, Germany. Those churches he served as pastor included Satsuma Baptist, First Baptist of Screven, University Heights Baptist in Tallahassee, Calvary Baptist of Augsburg, Germany, First Baptist of Blackshear, College Avenue in Douglas and Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist of Silver Springs. He retired in 1990. Since his retirement, he served as interim pastor of First Baptist, Jesup, First Baptist, St. George, Five Points Baptist, and North 14th Street Baptist, Fernandina Beach and Woodbine Baptist of Woodbine.
Survivors include his wife, Madelyne; two children, Dawn and Michael; one sister, Tanna Dawson of Ft. Lauderdale; several nieces, one nephew; and several cousins in the Ukraine and Nella and Andre Andraeko of Pompano Beach.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, from the Yulee Baptist Church, 35971 Harts Road, with the Rev. Tom Keisler officiating.

Curtis Harold Gibbs
Curtis Harold Gibbs, 76, of Blackshear died early Wednesday morning, January 19, 2005, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
A native of Liberty County, he moved to Ware County in 1951 and moved to Pierce County in 1990. He retired in 1990 from CSX Railroad after 39 years of service where he was a machinist. For 25 years he was the local chairman of the International Association of Machinists, was a member of the Frank C. Folks Masonic Lodge #192 and was a spirit-filled Christian. His parents were the late John and Mable Smith Gibbs. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Tracy Gibbs and one sister, Sybil Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Mason Gibbs, Blackshear; two sons, John Gibbs and Major Harold Gibbs, both of Waycross; one daughter, Jenny Scurry (husband Dwayne), Richmond Hill, eight grandchildren, Kristi Cornelius (husband Ron), Valdosta, April Kline (husband Jerry), Hugo, MN, Jacob Gibbs (wife Rosie), Blackshear, Amanda Harris (husband David), Elcajon, CA, Jennifer Wingo (husband Frank), Blackshear, Angela Fields (husband Jimmy), Gainesville, Mason Gibbs and Tony Gibbs, both of Waycross, two step-grandchildren, Carlie and Gavin O’Neal, Rockingham, NC; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mamie Henderson (husband John T.), Colonel’s Island, Johnnie Rollison (husband Rembert), Hinesville and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A.J. Strickland
Alonzo James “Strick” Strickland II, 91, Park Avenue, Trion, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005 in a Rome hospital.
A native of Blackshear, he was born Oct. 30, 1913 to the late Alonzo James Strickland Sr. and Arloa Parker Strickland.
Mr. Strickland was a graduate of Wofford College and received his M.S. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Georgia. He served as a teacher and coach at Ocilla and Newnan. He then served as principal of Tubize/Celanese School in Rome for six years. He served 27 years as Superintendent of Trion City Schools. He served as a President of the Summerville-Trion Rotary Club and Chattooga County Unit of the American Cancer Society; was an organizer and still served as a Director of the First National Bank. He was the first President of the Chattooga County Historical Society. He also served as President of the Georgia Education Association as well as the Georgia Association of School Administrators. He served in all positions of the Trion First United Methodist Church over the years. He and his wife, “Sadie”, traveled all over the world after his retirement.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Sara Francis Boyd Strickland; two sons, Bradford Boyd Strickland, Dothan, AL and Alonzo James Strickland III, Tuscaloosa, AL; three grandchildren, Matthew Howard Strickland, Lena Strickland Levendoski and Glenn David Strickland and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A memorial funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15 from the Trion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Art Graves and the Rev. George Cobb officiating.

Robert C. Howell Jr.
Robert C. Howell Jr., 52, of Blackshear died early Tuesday morning, January 18, 2005 at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after a short illness.
A native of Ware County, he had lived there most of his life before moving to Pierce County in 1999. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Faye Mobley Howell; his parents Robert C. Howell Sr. and Beckie Johns Howell, and a brother, Hugh D. Higginbotham.
He was a former pulpwooder and painter. He was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle in Waycross.
Survivors include four daughters, Becky Jones (husband Curtis), Brenda Griner, Barbara Morgan (husband Robert), all of Blackshear and Genia Morgan (husband Owen), Hilliard, FL; two sons Robert “Boss Man” Howell III (wife Diana) and Thomas Morgan, all of Blackshear; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Linda Accord, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, from the Gospel Tabernacle in Waycross.
