Louis Henry Hust
Louis H. Hust, 81, of Blackshear died Monday night, November 15, 2004, at Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.
A native of Norwich, CT, he had lived most of his life there before moving to Blackshear in 1980. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margueritte Wildes Hust; his parents, Lewey Jacob Hust and Emma Supernaught Hust, and two brothers, Robert Hust and William Hust.
He was retired from General Dynamics in Norwich, CT from the electric boat division in Submarine Research and Development.
He was an active member of Southgate Baptist Church, where he had served on several committees. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife Waneta Hust, Blackshear; two daughters, Charlotte Young (husband John) Hilliard, FL, and Dianne Elaine Casavant (husband, the Rev. Lucien Casavant), Waycross; three step-sons, Charles W. Courson, Moosup, CT, Edward E. Courson (wife Missy), Chaplin, CT, and Dana R. Courson (wife Lorraine), Plainfield, CT.; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Evelyn Kirby (husband Jack), Elaine Baciewski and Catherine Sarchi, all of Norwich, CT, and several loving nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Earnie Turner Kirkland
Earnie Turner Kirkland, 88, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Waycross and Waverly before moving back to Blackshear in 1998. She had worked at the Ware Hotel Restaurant for many years and also with the Green Frog Restaurant. She was a member of the Blackshear Church of God where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class. She was a daughter of the late Martin Asberry and Addie Padgett Turner and was also preceded in death by her husband, Odis J. Kirkland, who passed away in 2001. She was a sweet and kind woman who was well loved by all of her family and friends.
Survivors are a brother, Martin A. “Shorty” Turner Jr., (wife Dorthell), Woodbine; a sister-in-law, Estelle Turner, Blackshear; five nieces, Patsy Sherrod, Waycross, Delores Boatright and Pearl Bailey, both of Blackshear, Mary Ann Seman, St. Marys and Wanda Thrift, Kingsland; ten nephews, Lamar Turner, Carlton Turner, Wayne Turner, Larry Turner and Andy Turner, all of Blackshear, McCoy Turner, Homestead, FL, Bobby Turner, Jacksonville, FL, Billy Turner, Gainesville, FL, Martin A. Turner, III, St. Marys and Bill Turner, Woodbine and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, from the Blackshear Church of God.

Blanche Rosella Strickland Turner
Blanche Rosella Strickland Turner, 90, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she was a housewife. A charter member of the Blackshear Church of God, she was also a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the Joyful Hearts. She was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Virginia Pearl Riggins Strickland and was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Turner; a grandson, Anthony Turner; a sister and five brothers.
Survivors are three daughters, Patsy Sherrod, Waycross and Deloris (Kenneth) Boatright and Pearl Bailey, both of Blackshear; three sons, Lamar (Sylvia) Turner, Carlton (Jackie) Turner and Larry Wayne Turner, all of Blackshear; three brothers, Omer Strickland, St. Petersburg, FL and Norris Strickland and Carswell Strickland, both of Blackshear; 11 grandchildren, Pam Cox, Stevie Boatright, Randy Boatright, Sandy Stone, Vanessa Mobley, Jamie Turner, Alison Long, Brian Turner, Mike Turner, Kevin Turner and Dana Turner; 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, from the Blackshear Church of God.

Roy Benjamin Mead
Roy Benjamin Mead, 59, of Blackshear, died early Friday morning, November 19, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.
A native of Oceanside, CA, he had lived most of his life in Florida before moving to Brantley County and then to Pierce County in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lafayette Mead and Alyce Doris Merager Mead.
He was a retired truck driver from Thom’s Transport in Blackshear. He was also a collector of classic cars. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Mead, Blackshear; two daughters, Barbara Bolton, Nahunta and Mary Anne Ewert, Statesboro; two step-sons, Chris Finch, Blackshear and Gerald Powell (wife Nikki), Florence, SC; his former wife, Jodi Mead, Waynesville; father and mother-in-law, Donnie Stone (wife, Irene) and Ruth Stone, all of Florence, SC; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to the Southeast Cancer Unit.

Dorothy H. Wainright ‘Mama Dot’ Brooker
Dorothy H. Wainright “Mama Dot” Brooker, 85, of Nahunta, died suddenly Tuesday night, Nov. 9, 2004, at her residence.
A native of a section of Wayne County that is now part of Brantley, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ethel Deen Sweat Wainright. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, R. Brown Brooker, a well known Brantley County Commissioner and businessman. A sister, Frieda Fisher, and a brother, Walter Wainright, also preceded her in death.
She and her husband built and operated the St. Illa Motel and Restaurant and Brooker’s Hardware for many years. She was an active member of Nahunta United Methodist Church, where she served as chairman of the financial committee for the Susannah Wesley Circle, until her health started declining. She served as secretary for the Brantley Co. Senior Citizens Club, was a great supporter of the Neighbors Helping Neighbors organization and also was involved with the Brantley County Historical Society. She was also a former member of the Nahunta City Council where she served two terms, and was a former secretary of the Eastern Star and former member of the Nahunta Garden Club.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wain and Nancy Brooker, Nahunta; a granddaughter, Sheron Brooker and grandson, Matt Brooker, both of Nahunta; two great-granddaughters, Whitney and Ashlyn Brooker, both of Nahunta; a sister, Kathrine Sikes, Glennville; a special niece, Joy Brooker Evans, Waynesville, and a special family member, Libby Dean Brooker and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, from the Nahunta First Baptist Church with the Rev. R.C. Mathis and the Rev. Jim Dirst officiating.

Madeline Stokes
Madeline Tuten Stokes, 87, of West Columbia, SC, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004.
A native of Blackshear, she was the daughter of the late James Lewis and Bertha Davis Tuten. She was the wife of the late David E. Stokes. She was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronald L. Stokes and his wife, Lari H. Stokes, Eastover; sister, Susie V. Hammond, Keystone Heights, FL.; brother, Rudolph Tuten, Melbourne, Fla.; and grandson, Ronald L. Stokes II, West Columbia.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 from the Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, in West Columbia.
Burial followed in Southland Memorial Gardens.

Joseph Earl Johnson Sr.
Joseph Earl Johnson Sr., 73, of Patterson, passed away early Sunday, November 14, 2004, at his residence following a long illness.
A native of Pierce County, he had lived here for most of his life. He was a supervisor at the White Oak Plantation and also a carpenter. He was a member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Johnson, and one sister, Mildred Davis. He was the son of the late William Hansford and Irma Viola Winn Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Elouise Lee Johnson, Patterson; three daughters, Brenda Johnson Boatright, Blackshear, Opal and David Taylor, Patterson and Tina and Greg White, Patterson; one son, Joseph E. “Buddy” Johnson Jr., Patterson; five sisters, Irene Mobley, Patterson, Linnie Ruth Arpen, Jacksonville, FL, Louise Register, Homerville, Kate Dickey, Kingsland, and Annie Bell Griffis, Blackshear; six brothers, Elder Alvin Johnson, Patterson, Ephraim Johnson, Patterson, Carl Johnson, Lake Toxaway, NC, Harry Johnson, SC, Lee Johnson, San Antonio, TX, and Clyde Johnson, Blackshear; six grandchildren, Mat Boatright, Carrollton, Joby Boatright, Offerman, Joshua Johnson, Jacksonville, FL, Ambre’ Johnson, Kingsland, Jeremy Taylor, Patterson, and Emily Taylor, Patterson; one great-grandchild, Bryer Lee Boatright and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

August Martin ‘Marty’ Karle
August Martin “Marty” Karle, 51, of Alachua, FL died Sunday afternoon, November 14, 2004, at the Shands University Hospital in Gainesville, FL after a short illness.
He was born in Lakeland, FL but was reared in Waycross, where he was a 1971 graduate of Waycross High School. He had made his home in Alachua for a number of years where he was a salesman with PCS Joint Venture. He received an associate degree from Central Florida, was a member of the Catholic faith and was a member and three time President of the Fightin’ Gator Touchdown Club and the Bass Masters. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Karle and a sister, Betsy Karle.
Survivors include his parents A. A. and Barbara Hipp Karle, Waycross; a daughter, Elizabeth Karle, Alachua, FL; four brothers Dan Karle, Greenwood, SC, David Karle and Matt Karle, Jacksonville, FL, and Kris Karle, Blackshear; three sisters Mary Woodruff, Waycross, Ginny Karle, Birmingham, AL, and Kathy Aldridge, Blackshear; sixteen nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 from the Queen Of Peace Catholic Church in Gainesville, FL.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at the Calvary cemetery in Crawfordsville, IN.

Pearl Mozelle Proctor Bowen
Pearl Mozelle Proctor Bowen, 81, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 2, 2004, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she was a homemaker and former sitter at Baptist Village. Mrs. Bowen was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a daughter of the late James Matthew and Bertie Altman Proctor and was also preceded in death by her husband, Warner Hill Bowen; a daughter, Teresa Bowen, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mark Bowen, Blackshear; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Debra Bowen, Blackshear; two sisters, Joyce Brown and Ola Maude Walker, both of Waycross; a sister-in-law, Louise Proctor, Blackshear; six grandchildren, Brandy Bowen, April Myers, Michael Bowen, Joshua Bowen, Lee Sweat and Brooke Bowen; five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.
