LaCarl Howell

LaCarl Howell, 56, died suddenly Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at his residence in Ocala, FL.
He was a native of Bacon County and had lived several years in South Carolina before moving to Ocala in 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chloris V. Howell and Lorene Carter Howell.
He was employed as a tree surgeon in Ocala, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his two brothers, Charles V. Howell (wife Shirley), Greer, SC, and Wayne Howell (wife Nancy), Ocala, FL; a sister, Bobby Ann Howell, Waycross and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, from the Shady Grove Baptist Church.
Memorialization was by cremation.
Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.

Victoria Mae ‘Tory’ Cox Hill Stone

Victoria Mae “Tory” Cox Hill Stone, 93, of Blackshear, passed away Monday, November 1, 2004, at the Clinch Memorial Hospital in Homerville.
A native of Poplar, North Carolina, she had lived in Pierce County for several years. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. She was a daughter of the late John Albert and Georgia Lee Peterson Cox. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter E. Hill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Stone, two sons, Erven Eugene Hill and John Perry Hill; a sister, Frances N. “Sissy” Dodd and a granddaughter, Vickie Marie Hill.
Survivors include three daughters-in-law, Lawana K. Hill Peacock, Blackshear, Deloris Hill, Violet, LA and Margaret Hill, New Orleans, LA; four grandchildren, Michael and Harriet Hill, Gary and Joy Hill, Donna Lynn Hill and Pamela Ann and Andy Slaughter; 15 great-grandchildren, John Phillip Montelepe, Rebecca Lynn Booth, Megan Victoria Slaughter, Lauren King, Blake Hill, Dana Marie Hill, Amanda Hill, Joseph Booth, Jr., Justin King, Shannon Minchew, Amanda Lynn Hill, Crystal Hill, Ashley Ann Minchew, Alex Joseph Keiff and Anna Hill; three great-great-grandchildren, Ian Hill, Hannah Marie Hill and David Gallagher and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel.

Trilby Adelade Allen Herbert

Trilby Adelade Allen Herbert, 65, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville.
A native of Miami, FL, she had lived in Maryland and Washington, D.C. before moving to Pierce County in 1985. She was a retired Naval Administrative Assistant for the Pentagon and was of the Protestant faith. She was a daughter of the late Dewey and Virginia Sawyer Allen.
Survivors include her husband, William Francis Herbert Sr.; three sons, Bill (Cheryl) Herbert Jr., Brantley County, Keith Herbert, Ocean City, NJ and John (Kathy) Herbert, Woodbridge, VA; a daughter, Kathy (Doug) Cannon, Blackshear; a brother, George (Ronnie) Allen, Orlando, FL; six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, November 4, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Wheeler officiating.
Memorialization was by cremation.

James H. MacRae

James H. MacRae, 54, of Fitzgerald, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald, Georgia.
He was born August 13, 1950, in Hyannis, MA., but had lived in the Fitzgerald community for the past eight years. He was a retired ceramist dental technician. His many friends in Fitzgerald loved him. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel and Jeffery MacRae.
Survivors include his parents, Harold and Marjory MacRae, Blackshear; friend, Faye Walker, Fitzgerald; one daughter, Cynthia Joy MacRae, Bristol, CT; one son: James MacRae Jr., New Britain, CT; one sister: Bonnie Lefurgey, Bristol, CT; two brothers: Ronald MacRae, Plainville, CT and Rodney MacRae, Waynesboro; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were private.
Paulk Funeral Home of Fitzgerald was in charge of arrangements.

Eldis Bryson Head

Eldis Bryson Head, 85, of Plant City, FL, died Monday, November 1, 2004, in Plant City.
She was born in 1919 in Jacksonville, FL, but had lived in Appling County before moving to Plant City over 40 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lake Chapel Primitive Baptist Church near Patterson. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Nell Bryson and was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Dock Head, and by a son, Bud Head.
Survivors include a daughter, Dale Dixon; a son, Larry Head; granddaughters raised as daughters, Sherry Johnson and Wanda Head; seven other grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Naomi Winn, Bristol and numerous family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, from the Wells Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Plant City, FL.

Geneva Knowlton Bowen

Geneva Knowlton Bowen, 77, died suddenly early Tuesday morning, October 26, 2004, at her residence in the Cason community.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Pierce County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lem Knowlton and Lillie Johnson Knowlton; a son, John Lemuel Bowen and a grandson, Scotty Roberts.
Mrs. Bowen was formerly a bookkeeper at PET Dairy for many years. She had also worked at Peoples Bank and Blackshear City Hall. Her family owns and operates Bowen Dairy in the Cason community of Pierce County.
She was a lifelong member of Rehobeth Baptist Church where she had served as treasurer, church clerk, Sunday school teacher and on many other committees.
Survivors include her husband Marvin Eugene Bowen Sr., Blackshear; two daughters Ellen Roberts (husband Barry), Blackshear and Teresa Allen (husband Don), Statesboro; two sons, Gene Bowen (wife Kay) and Mike Bowen (wife Terri), all of Blackshear; nine grandchildren, Jenifer Roberts, Savannah, Chris Roberts (wife Kami), Blackshear, Tiffany Allen, Statesboro, Rodney Bowen, (wife Kelly), Gina Wade (husband Keith), Chad Bowen (wife Dana), Brent Bowen (wife Marie), Will Bowen (wife Monica), all of Blackshear and Heather Tyre (husband Jason ), Patterson; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Knowlton (wife Druscilla), Waycross; a sister, Elvera James, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 28, from the Rehobeth Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rehobeth Baptist Church.

Richard A. Cunningham

Richard A. Cunningham, 73, passed away Friday, October 22, 2004, at an Augusta hospital.
He had lived in Patterson for many years before retiring to Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruth Cunningham.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Scurry (husband David), Patterson; five sons, Jeff Cunningham (wife Julie), Waycross, James Cunningham, Macon, Donald Cunningham, Patterson, Rick Lewis and Danny Lewis; a brother, Robert Cunningham (wife Betty), Florida; a sister, Judy Taylor, Ohio and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A family memorial service will take place at a later date.

Marguerite Alice Geiger Kemp

Marguerite Alice Geiger Kemp, 85, passed away early Thursday morning, October 28, 2004, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
A native of Ware County, she had lived in St. Petersburg, FL for many years before moving to Pierce County several years ago. She was a homemaker but had also worked with the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and the St. Petersburg Times before starting her family. She attended the Presbyterian Church and will be remembered as being a loving mother.
She was a daughter of the late Marvin and Minnie Smith Geiger and was also preceded in death by her husband, William Winters Kemp.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane Kemp, St. Petersburg; a son, Doug Kemp, Blackshear; a grandson, J. B. Kemp and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 30, in the Alabaha Cemetery.
Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.

James Edward ‘Droopy’ Young

James Edward Young, 65, of 827 Lee Street, Blackshear, died early Tuesday morning, October 26, 2004, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 15, 1939, the son of the late Joe Johnson and Elizabeth Young in High Springs, FL. He joined Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church of High Springs at an early age and attended regularly until he moved with his family to Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Douglas-Anderson High School in Jacksonville and entered the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War from January 4, 1962 until January 16, 1964 and then served in the Army Reserve for additional years.
After the Army, James worked as a “handy man, ” doing odd jobs for anyone in need, as well as construction jobs.
Survivors include a daughter, Casandra Lorrine Young and two grandchildren, all of Jacksonville, FL; an aunt, Kiziah Chaplin, Gainesville, FL.; a very special first cousin, Rosa Lee Sheppard, Blackshear; special friends; Frank (Betty) Ellis and Bernadean Hayes, all of Jacksonville, FL; a host of other relatives, friends and loving neighbors.
A celebration of life service took place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 from the chapel of Jacobs Funeral Home with Dr. Evelyn McGauley officiating.
Memorialization was by cremation.
Jacobs Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.

James Melton Boatright

James Melton Boatright, 67, died Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at his residence in Mershon after an extended illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Mack Boatright and Belle Strickland Boatright and a brother, John Alton Boatright.
Mr. Boatright was a retired truck driver and also worked at Mershon Tractor Company. He attended Mershon Baptist Church and was a member of the National Hunting Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Melinda Allison (James), Kathleen, FL, Charleen Thomas (Stephen), St. Augustine, FL, Michelle Oster (Jack) and Debbie Vlahovich, all of St. Petersburg, FL; a son William Vlahovich, St. Petersburg, FL; seven grandchildren; a brother Earl Boatright and a sister Ouida Alexander, both of Douglas; special family members, the John Earl Strickland family, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service took place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Sinclair officiating.
Burial will take place at a later date in the Blackshear City Cemetery.
Memorialization was by cremation.
